We answer the question about the American citizenship of Dmitry Medvedev’s son Ilya

In the summer of 2020, Stanislav Sadalsky published a rather risky post on Instagram about the son of Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev. The actor responded to publications in the Italian media, which wrote that Ilya Dmitrievich did not attend MGIMO at all, but only looked at his Alma Mater for a diploma with honors.

Journalists immediately “discovered the truth” that Medvedev’s son had already received an American passport and had a successful business in the United States in the form of a network of gas stations and hypermarkets.

Biography

Ilya Dmitrievich Medvedev is the son of Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, a student at MGIMO.

Ilya was born on August 3, 1995 in the city of St. Petersburg in the family of Dmitry and Svetlana Medvedev. The boy’s father at that time taught legal disciplines at the institute and served in the Committee on External Relations of the city administration as a freelance expert. Dmitry Anatolyevich collaborated with Anatoly Sobchak, and also worked with Vladimir Putin. Medvedev already in those years owned a stake in Finzell CJSC and the Ilim Pulp Enterprise wood processing plant.

Parents of Ilya Medvedev

At the time of her son’s birth, mother Svetlana Linnik had already graduated from the Faculty of Economics of LEFI and was working as an accountant. After the birth of her first child, she devoted herself to raising Ilya. In 1999, the family moved to Moscow. At the age of 7, the child went to a prestigious Moscow gymnasium. Svetlana took care of her son’s diversified development: from an early age, Ilya was sent to the football section, after which the boy became interested in fencing. Medvedev Jr. fell in love with foreign languages, as well as exact sciences.

Later, Ilya began to master computer technology. In 2007, the boy starred in an issue of the humorous magazine “Yeralash”, which was called “Hero”. The video told the story of a boy who, impressed by an action movie he saw in a movie theater, rushed to save a girl on the street from the hands of bandits. In fact, it turned out that he ruined the take that the film crew was doing at that time.

The second issue of the humorous magazine with the participation of Ilya Medvedev, entitled “Take Me Down,” was published later – already in 2008. The plot of the new video was the story of a boy who wanted to act in a movie and annoyed the film director by appearing at the wrong time on the set.

Only the directors of the filming process knew that the main character’s father was the Prime Minister and then the President of the Russian Federation. The director of the first episode, Alexey Shcheglov, spoke positively about Ilya’s abilities, calling him a cheerful and lively boy. At the casting, the child made the chief director Boris Grachevsky laugh. Until 2012, this fact of the biography of Medvedev’s son was not advertised in the media.

The safety of the children of top government officials is a very serious matter. They were always guarded by several bodyguards. Ilya also has his own security. However, during classes at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, a VIP student must appear without security. According to the dean of the faculty, security within the walls of MGIMO is not uncommon. However, security guards are not allowed into lecture halls. They meet and escort their clients at the door. Dean Skvortsov said that sometimes situations with personal bodyguards reach the point of absurdity. For example, when Gorbachev’s granddaughters had to undergo a medical examination, and the security wanted to go with them. According to Skvortsov, it took a lot of time to dissuade them.

The safety of the top officials of the state and their immediate relatives must be ensured by employees of the Federal Security Service. Ilya Medvedev is one of these people.
