Biography of Halle Berry

Holly's mother, Judith Ann, was white and a mental health nurse. The father, Jerome Jesse Berry, an African-American, first worked in the same clinic and then became a bus driver.

But Hallie does not live with both parents for long. When she turns four, her parents divorce. She and her sister stay with their mother.

It wasn't easy for them growing up - two black girls in a white neighborhood. But the mother believed that the main thing was resilience, and she taught this to her daughters. Hallie becomes editor of the school newspaper, class president, and captain of the local high school cheerleading team. She wins her first competition - for the title of school prom queen.

After graduating from school, she participates in several more beauty contests. In 1985, she received the title of Miss Teen All-American, then Miss Ohio USA 1986, First Runner-up Miss USA 1986, and finally took 6th place in Miss World.

A series of failures

After appearing as Catwoman and starring in X-Men, Berry decided to return to the big screen in a leading role. Alas, this turned out to be another failure. More precisely, a series of terrible failures.

In 2007, “The Perfect Stranger” was released, and then “What We Lost”, but both projects were failures, the box office receipts were minimal. In 2010, the film Frankie and Alice was released, in which Halle Berry played a stripper with a personality disorder. The film earned just $695,000 domestically.

2012 was no better. She starred in Shark Whisperer, which only grossed $432,000 on a $25 million budget. This project was called the biggest failure of the year. The following year, the actress appeared in the films “43” and “Alarm Call,” which also did not make much of an impression.

Despite the series of failures, none of the critics blamed Berry herself for the failure; her acting skills were not questioned. However, participation in such films did not add to her fame in Hollywood.

Filmography of the actress

At the age of 20, Hallie entered college to study radio journalism, but dropped out. She would rather make a career as a model. She succeeds only at the amateur level. Then she enrolls in acting classes in Chicago.

She attends castings, but they only offer participation in commercials and episodic roles. Finally she gets the role of a drug addict in the film "Jungle Fever". To get used to the character, ten days before filming she stops washing and communicates with real drug addicts.

In 1993, she starred with Eddie Murphy in Boomerang. Career is gradually going up. In “The Case of Isaiah,” she successfully copes with the role of an illiterate alcoholic who threw her child into the trash can. After that, she gets noticed and offers start coming in.

In 1996, Halle Berry became the face of Revlon (and still remains so). For her role as Dorothy Dandridge, Halle received a Golden Globe and an Emmy as best television actress.

In 2002, actress Halle Berry received an Oscar for her role in the film “Monster's Ball.” But for the main role in the failed film “Catwoman”, Berry received the “Golden Raspberry”. This anti-award goes to her as the worst actress of 2005. She appears in person at the awards ceremony, becoming the second actor since 1980 to do so.

Now Halle Berry is one of the highest paid actresses in Hollywood. In 2010, she was included in People magazine's "Most Beautiful Celebrities" list for the fourteenth time. But her area of interest is not only acting. In 2008, the actress released her debut perfume scent - Halle by Halle Berry. In 2010, a second fragrance appeared - Pure Orchid.

By the way, Halle Berry's height is 169 cm.

HALLE BERRY PERSONAL LIFE: SEX, LIES AND BEATS

It was hardly the first time this had happened in her life, but at age 20, Holly's then-boyfriend hit her so hard on the head that she lost 80% of her hearing in her right ear. She ran away from Danny Wood, the lead singer of the Kids on the Block group, as soon as the press started talking that the starlet intended to ring the guy. And then I found another adventure. While journalists were wondering which of her colleagues on the set she was having an affair with, she was in full swing with Chicago dentist John Ronan. Who, after breaking up, sued her, demanding 80 thousand dollars allegedly borrowed from him. And they say he even blackmailed the actress, threatening to make intimate videos public! Holly was not left alone - singer Christopher Williams came to console her. But soon the hugs gave way to beatings. Berry found the strength to leave him and survive this breakup. Baseball player David Justice lent his strong shoulder to the sad beauty, to whom she wrote her phone number instead of an autograph. In fact, Holly married him in 1993. But... The scenario developed as usual: tenderness and care grew into domestic violence and betrayal, and it all ended in a scandal in court. David accused her of infidelity and tried to sue for half of the fortune. This time Holly couldn’t stand it and tried to poison herself with exhaust fumes along with her two dogs. The only thing that stopped her was the thought of her mother. “How I regret that men are not like dogs!” - the actress exclaimed in despair and threw herself into her work for several years. After winning an Oscar, a Golden Globe and an Emmy, she felt ready for a relationship in 1998. The occasion was again an autograph that Holly asked from musician Eric Bene. They secretly married in 2001, Berry officially became the mother of her husband’s daughter from his first marriage. But... As it turned out, even before the wedding, Bene had parallel affairs with two more women, and after that he dragged into bed all the more or less attractive girls. Holly, forgetting herself, began to help the sexaholic, put him in a clinic... But when he was caught in the arms of his former passion, Berry herself needed therapy. After the divorce, she angrily declared that she would never marry again! And I tried to keep my word. At least, having met a Canadian model 10 years younger than her at a fashion shoot, Holly was no longer in a hurry to get to the altar. But she gave birth to a daughter, Nala Ariela, from Gabriel Aubrey. And this at 42 years old, and with diabetes! To all the questions, the actress answered with restraint that next to Gabriel she felt calm and balanced, and she didn’t need anything else. But, as it turned out later, it is still required.

Personal life of Halle Berry

Halle Berry has been married twice. The first time her husband is a baseball player, Atlanta Braves David Justice, the wedding takes place on January 1, 1993, and the divorce is filed already in 1997. Hallie takes the breakup very hard, even attempting suicide.

The second chosen one is musician Eric Benay. Their wedding takes place on the beach of Santa Barbara in early 2001. Actress Halle Berry adopts Eric's daughter India, but this does not save the marriage. Five years later, another divorce follows.

Since 2005, Berry has been dating model Gabriel Aubry, who is 9 years younger than his lover. On March 16, 2008, Gabriel and Hallie welcomed their daughter Nala Ariela Aubrey. In 2010, the couple ended their relationship.

In 2011, rumors appeared in the media that Holly was dating actor Olivier Martinez. Later this information was confirmed. After two years of relationship, the lovers got married. On November 5, 2013, the couple had a son, Maceo Robert Martinez. Unfortunately, the actress’s third marriage did not last long: in October 2015, Berry and Martinez announced their divorce.

Halle Berry in the film industry

Berry went to several screen tests, and eventually she was offered a role in the mini-series Living Dolls. Her next work was the film “Tropical Fever”, in which she had to play a drug addict. In order to embody this image as believably as possible, the girl communicated with real drug addicts, and also stopped washing herself. Such a responsible attitude to work naturally impressed the entire film crew.

After that, Berry quickly moved up the career ladder. For her role in the film “The Last Boy Scout,” she danced in a strip club shortly before filming. She also appeared in a couple of films telling about the lives of real famous people: “Why Fools Fall in Love” and “Meet Dorothy Dandridge.” For the latter of them she received several film awards, including an Emmy, a Golden Globe, a Screen Actors Guild Award and others. Similar victories were brought by her work in the film “Monster’s Ball”, where she got the image of the wife of an executed murderer.

Holly became especially popular after the release of the fantastic action film based on the X-Men comics, as well as its sequels.

For the first time, the actress showed her naked body in the film “Password “Swordfish”.”

The film actress received her only Razzie Award for her leading role in the film Catwoman, and she personally came to the ceremony.

Berry has made a huge contribution to the world of cinema, so it is quite difficult to list all her successful works. Below are some worthy films with her participation over the entire career of the actress at the moment:

  • "The Case of Isaiah";
  • "Chasing the Sun";
  • "Die but not now";
  • "Gothic";
  • "Perfect Stranger"
  • "Cloud Atlas";
  • "Outside".

Holly is the winner of many awards. Apart from directly appearing in films, she also lends her voice to cartoon characters.

Career[ | ]

In the late 1980s, Berry moved to Illinois to pursue a modeling career and also pursue acting. One of her first roles was in a local cable television series called Chicago Force. In 1989 she received the role of Emily Franklin

in the mini-series “Living Dolls” (a continuation of another series “Who’s the Boss?”). She also had a recurring role in the soap opera Quiet Landing.

Her breakthrough came in Spike Lee's Rain Fever, in which she played drug addict Vivian.

[5]. Berry first played a supporting role in 1991 in the film Just Business. In 1992, she played the role of a friend and teacher in love with Eddie Murphy's character in the romantic comedy Boomerang.

Playing a former drug addict trying to regain custody of her son in The Isaiah Case (1995), Berry portrayed a more serious role than her co-star Jessica Lange. Played by Sandra Beecher

In 1998, Berry received praise for her role in Bullward as an intelligent woman-turned-activist who helps a politician (Warren Beatty) turn over a new life. The same year, she played the singer, one of the three wives of pop singer Frankie Lymon, in the biopic Why Do Fools Fall in Love. In 1999, in another biopic, Meet Dorothy Dandridge, she portrayed the first black woman to be nominated for Best Actress at the Academy Awards. This was recognized with several awards, including an Emmy and a Golden Globe.[11][14]

In 2002, Berry played Letitia Musgrove

, the wife of an executed murderer, in the film "Monster's Ball".
Her performance was awarded by the National Board of Review
and
the Screen Actors Guild
. Interestingly, she became the first African-American woman to receive an Oscar for Best Actress, just as her heroine
Dorothy Dandridge
was the first to be nominated for this title.[15]

Berry played the mutant superhero Storm

in the film adaptation of the famous comics "X-Men" (2000), as well as in the sequels "X-Men 2" (2003), "X-Men: The Last Stand" (2006) and "X-Men: Days of Future Past" (2014).

She appeared in person at this ceremony, becoming the third person and second actor to do so.[24] She later appeared in the Oprah Winfrey-produced television film Their Eyes Were Watching God (2005), an adaptation of the novella in which Berry played Janie Crawford

, a free-spirited woman whose unconventional sexual mores shocked her 1920s contemporaries in her small community.
For this role she was nominated for an Emmy. And in the same year she voiced the robot Cappy
in the cartoon “Robots”[25].

Halle Berry is one of the highest paid actresses in Hollywood, earning $10 million per film. In July 2007, she topped In Touch magazine's list of "40-year-old beauties." And on April 3, 2007, Berry was awarded her own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame across from the Kodak Theater for her contributions to the film industry.[26][27]

[30].

In 2010, for the 14th time, she was included in People magazine's list of "The Most Beautiful Celebrities 2010"[31].

Halle Berry: To beat age, take a young lover

Actress Halle Berry became famous due to several circumstances. Firstly, of course, thanks to its fantastic beauty. James Bond's first black girl (who doesn't remember the scene from Die Another Day in which a half-naked Holly, like Venus, emerges from the sea foam?) is about to turn 40, but when you see her in a tight T-shirt with a minimum of coverage body, the last thing you think about is age. Secondly, thanks, of course, to talent. It became obvious after the film “Monster’s Ball,” in which Berry played an unhappy woman whose husband was sentenced to death, her son was overweight, and her house was taken away for non-payment. Thirdly, thanks to the commitment to the ideas of political correctness and the tireless fight for the rights of “colored” women. Many people remember the hysteria that Holly threw when receiving an Oscar for the same “Monster’s Ball”: the actress screamed something about the oppression of black women. And fourthly, thanks to the role of the flying mutant Storm in the highly successful comic book trilogy “X-Men”, the completion of which was presented at Cannes. And which came out on our screens too.

“I felt like a real mutant”

— In the third film you have a relatively small role.

- But still more than in the previous one! After the second film, fans of the X-Men comics almost beat me up. In their opinion, there was too little of me in X-Men. They bombarded me with letters. Therefore, when the question arose about my participation in the third film, I said: even if I only have five minutes of screen time, let it be a meaningful five minutes. Storm should be a warrior, as many fans are accustomed to seeing her in the comics. She refused to play as a statistician. My heroine had to have her own views on everything. In addition, she is full of talents - she can fly!

— Why do you have gray hair in the film?

“This is the invention of director Brett Ratner, who replaced Bryan Singer, who directed the previous two films in the trilogy. And at first I was distrustful of him. But then I not only got used to this wig, but also really loved it. Thanks to him, I felt like a real mutant. Now I’m not afraid of going gray or losing my color!

— The trilogy is over, but there remains the possibility of films in which the main characters will be the surviving “X-Men.”

— There will definitely be no films around Storm. I do not want it. But if Hugh Jackman asks me to be in his Wolverine movie, I probably won't say no. Although it always seemed to me that the main charm of “X-Men” is that the main character in them is always a group of mutants, and not just one person. What will happen if their brotherhood disappears, I don’t know.

At 40, the berry again!

— In the film, mutants are offered healing in the form of some kind of medicine. This is the highest degree of hypocrisy when people are forced to be “normal” under duress.

“As a woman of color, I’ve thought about this a lot,” chocolate Holly responds passionately, her black hair pulled back into a bun. “What if our government introduced a law requiring all blacks to take pills to gradually turn into whites?” Would I do this if I was in danger of dying? It is very important that our film, as if entertaining, asks such important questions. All my life I tried to find a place for myself in a system to which I was a “stranger.” Until I realized: it’s not me who needs to change, but those who cannot accept me for who I am.

— Do you perform many of the stunts in the film yourself?

— Yes, because I feel just great on the threshold of my 40th birthday! Because I’m finally happy in my personal life. People always ask me about my upcoming anniversary, but what can I say if I feel like I’m 19!

— Isn’t it a secret that your current boyfriend is 10 years younger than you?

- This is true. He's a model, we met at the Versace show.

At this point, director Brett Ratner, sitting next to him, blinks his eye and playfully remarks: “He’s a stud, can’t you see?”

“We had to fight for all achievements!”

— The fact that we will soon see you as Bruce Willis’s partner in the film “Complete Strangers” is not at all surprising. The amazing thing is that next month you begin filming with Danish director Susanne Bier in the film “What We Lost in the Fire.”

— I read the script, and I was overwhelmed. I realized that I had to play this. I fought for this role. They wanted a white actress, someone like Reese Witherspoon. But I flew to New York and brainwashed the director. As a result, she was unable to fight me off. And all because I love changing genres. To star in a chamber film about real, living people after a blockbuster like “X-Men” - what could be better?

— Do you still have to fight for roles after the Oscar?

- What do you think? I'm not complaining, but such a thing as racism still exists. Hollywood still wants its heroes' wives to be white. It's easier for them this way. Otherwise, if you make the wife “colored,” that means the children must be mulatto, and so you get a “black” film! - Holly squeals with overwhelming indignation - almost like she did back then at the Oscars. - It's all the same again! Why can't I just play the characters I like, regardless of their skin color? If I can do it, of course! Now I feel better, but I still suffer terribly from the bestial politics of Hollywood!
