“The energy giant British Petroleum managed to figure out how to stop the leak, but no one has yet figured out how to stop Mel Gibson,” California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger recently said at a meeting not dedicated to Gibson. And he hastily suggested that those gathered turn off their phones, because Mel, of course, would start calling with threats.

It is known: zealous Catholic Mel Gibson is at any moment ready for a verbal fight, where he least of all looks like a good Christian. “I want to kill him. I want to hang his entrails on a stick. I want to kill his dog,” this is Mel about the New York Times journalist who dared to criticize his father’s religious views. “I don’t think God will let him get in my way. He deserves to die,” this is Mel Gibson about one of his biographers.

“The ass is meant to be sat on, not for sex. I know some homosexuals, but their idiotic things are not my thing. Because of them, viewers are now trying to discern a homosexual in every actor,” Mel Gibson said in an interview with the El Pais newspaper. The Gay-Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation was offended and demanded an apology. Gibson didn’t mince words: “I’ll apologize when hell freezes over. Let them get the hell out! "

Mel Gibson

When Mel Gibson set foot on the blessed land of the Green Continent of Australia, he was twelve years old. The family moved here from the USA. Mel was sent to study at Sydney's St. Leo's College, an educational institution more like a monastery. Father Hutton hoped that his son would become a priest. But the Irish temperament overshadowed the patriarchal upbringing: Mel Gibson raged, started fights with students, began to smoke, drink - and in other accessible ways hinted that he would not make a padre.

Mel Gibson as a child

At the age of fifteen, he already went to work - in a factory, bottling orange juice. However, Sheila, Mel Gibson's sister, decided that her nimble brother was too good for the factory and that his antics and antics should be put to better use. She filled out an application for him to enter the National Institute of Dramatic Art, from where a call for exams soon came. Papa Hutton was so surprised that he didn’t even object. And Mel did not let his sister down: he passed the institute on the first try. The members of the selection committee had no doubt: the guy has obvious talent, he just needs to be polished.

“He felt the role amazingly,” recalled one of his teachers, “he got used to it, pulled it on like a skin. During sketches, he usually stood at the very wall, as quiet as water below the grass, without missing a word, and then went out into the middle of the room - and it was impossible to take your eyes off him.”

One problem - having escaped from under his parents' wing, Mel Gibson was simply stunned by freedom. The harsh regime and evening prayers were forgotten, the young talent ran away from stage lessons and rehearsals to the bar or to noisy parties. The matter almost ended in expulsion. But luck favored Mel Gibson despite everything: the handsome blue-eyed student was offered a “beach” role in the lightweight youth film “Summer City.” You just had to ride a motorcycle and seduce girls in bikinis - in fact, that’s exactly what Mel did instead of studying. And then they even paid for it: the first film fee in his life was $400.

Mel Gibson in his youth

A couple of years later, Mel Gibson starred in two films at once. One of them, Mad Max, was such a success that the authors decided to continue it. Mel played there as a brave policeman of the future, who, even after the outbreak of the third world war, remains at his post, protecting the surviving civilians from rampant gangs of scum.

“My career started in Australia after I played the lead role in the movie Mad Max. The second part of this film was purchased for wide release in the United States in 1981 and attracted the attention of Hollywood producers to me. In 1987, I starred in the film Lethal Weapon and finally got rid of the fear that I would have nothing to pay the rent,” Mel Gibson admits with a grin today.

By the way, “Lethal Weapon” spawned even more sequels than “Mad Max,” but most importantly, it made Mel Gibson one of the founders of an entire era of films about two police partners, one of whom is black and the other white.

Mel Gibson in Mad Max

Easy roles and easy money just fell on lucky Mel, and with them - women of easy virtue, easy drugs, a sea of alcohol and mountains of other temptations. The fact that he was already married did not mean anything - if Mel Gibson went on a spree, then the rest of the world ceased to exist. In moments of enlightenment, Gibson, however, began to grumble - that he was created for a real game, and he was called for in films where he had to flex his muscles, stick out his jaw and show off his buttocks to the audience: “If they send me a script in which on the second page I’m still wearing pants - it means they just got the wrong address.” But sober moments became less and less frequent.

With leaps and bounds, Mel Gibson confidently walked towards delirium tremens. One day he was serving in a bar with a film crew - and suddenly a massive fight broke out. Colleagues suggested leaving, but Gibson perked up: “I’ll stop them now. Look!” He got out from behind the table, rushed into the crowd, and said with pathos: “Friends! Stop the fight! I'm Mel Gibson! But then an empty bottle broke on the peacemaker’s head. Mel woke up already in intensive care.

“Here it is, a sign of fate,” realized the faithful son of dad Gibson, “it’s time to call it quits.”

Young Mel Gibson

And then Tina Turner, his partner in the third part of Mad Max, sent Mel a portrait of him from a glossy magazine cover, writing over it “Don’t distort this!” After leaving the hospital, Mel Gibson signed up for Alcoholics Anonymous and began a new round of biography. He played Hamlet in the film by Franco Zeffirelli. He added a clause to his standard acting contract called “I’m worth more without pants.” And although these measures did not make Mel’s buttocks any less desirable to the public (after they flashed in “Braveheart,” where Gibson’s character shows his butt to English soldiers, he was promised $25 million for similar scenes), now he took it calmly . After all, Mel Gibson would now invest this money in his own studio, ICON Production, and could film whatever he wanted.

Mel Gibson director

His first directorial experience, the film “The Man Without a Face,” did not become a super hit. But the second work - "Braveheart" - was a real triumph and brought five Oscars. This epic drama about the heroic struggle of the Scots for independence (up to two thousand extras were involved in the battle scenes of the film) showed that Mel Gibson is a jack of all trades - he worked on the film as a producer, and as a director, and as a leading actor.

For some time, Mel continued to act in other studios, bringing them significant profits (the films “Ransom”, “Conspiracy Theory”, “Reckoning”, “What Women Want”, “Patriot”). But then he completely focused on directing. Mature Mel Gibson felt that he had to say too much to the viewer himself, and not convey other people’s ideas.

Mel Gibson

In 2004, he released his most scandalous work, “The Passion of the Christ.” It would seem, where is all the noise coming from? The plot of the film is an attempt to recreate in detail the last twelve hours of the life of Jesus Christ. The message of the film: humanity is ruled by intolerance. The detailed reconstruction of Palestine at the beginning of our era using Aramaic, Latin and Hebrew indicated that the author was sensitive to the picture of the era. But instead of discussing the film about the crucifixion of Christ, the public took pleasure in crucifying Gibson.

There were accusations of anti-Semitism. They were followed by accusations: of the cruelty of the scenes; in gross errors and misreadings of the gospels; in the earnestness of faith; in lack of faith; in the immorality of the author, unworthy to touch upon a topic sacred to Christians.

Mel Gibson on the set of The Passion of the Christ

“Mel Gibson made millions playing roles in R-rated films that contributed significantly to the moral decay of society, such as Mad Max, Braveheart, Reckoning, Lethal Weapon,” critics were indignant - in most of his films obscene language and sacrilegious speeches are heard.” One particularly gifted reviewer even took it upon himself to count the curse words in the film Reckoning and counted 94 instances of their use.

“Can we say that Mel Gibson serves Christ? - another critic strained himself - Is it possible to believe and give your heart to the fact that all the power of art, as well as the fantasies of Mel Gibson, burst into my or your soul and produce those moods and states that the author of “Passion” wants? No!!! With his life, Mel Gibson showed that he himself was not born again and that he was in darkness.”

In vain Gibson bared his soul to the public, explaining: “There are moments in everyone’s life when it seems like you’re banging your head against the wall. This is exactly what happened to me twelve years ago. I was going through an existential crisis and asking myself a thousand questions. I was like a squeezed lemon. It is known that suffering is a harbinger of change. I kind of looked back and it allowed me to reconsider the faith in which I was raised. So I became interested in the Passion of the Lord as the basis of the Christian faith. I began to carefully study theology, reading a lot of books, sermons, and consulting with experts. I did not want the painting to be interpreted as an attempt to explain how Christ died. “Passion” is a picture about faith, hope, love and forgiveness. Blood and violence were necessary to show the sacrifice of Christ, the incredible agony of suffering that he went through out of love for people. No previous film has shown the full scale of this act. To achieve the truth, I needed the viewer to be on the verge of what was unbearable... I was accused of going too far with violence. Why won't anyone attack Tarantino with Kill Bill?"

But the zealots of Christian values continued to cry out - each of them knew better how and in the name of what Christ died. Jewish organizations also made their contribution to the general scandal. It is not surprising that Mel Gibson lost his temper: he started drinking heavily again, was arrested for drunk driving, sentenced to three years of suspended imprisonment and forced to attend the Alcoholics Anonymous Club.

During that period, he left his wife. Not that he divorced, but he settled separately and saw his family only on Sundays - when they went together to services in the church he built.

In 2006, director Mel Gibson's next film, Apocalypse, was released, about the last days of the Mayan civilization before the Spanish conquistadors arrived on the mainland. Once again, a loving recreation of the era (all dialogue in the film is spoken in Yucatecan). Again, labor-intensive and expensive large-scale filming (many previously unknown actors from Mexico City, the Mexican state of Yucatan, as well as Indians from the United States are involved in the film). Again - an appeal to the public with a request to try to understand (before the premiere, Gibson organized a preview of the film especially for American Indians).

Mel Gibson on the set of the film "Apocalypse"

And again - a huge scandal. This time the descendants of the Mayans were offended - and so were all the Indian human rights organizations. Mel Gibson was accused of: racism, excessive showing of scenes of violence, and distorted history. And so on down the list.

And Mel Gibson was again very worried, expressing his resentment and shame in reckless actions. The most fatal among them was a rapprochement with a Russian adventuress named Oksana, who with her silicone bust paved her way into near-Hollywood circles.

But before we talk about this person, it’s worth explaining Gibson’s attitude towards women in general. For Mel, as one would expect, it is ambivalent - a consequence of the prim, sanctimonious upbringing of Father Hutton.

Views and statements

Mel Gibson's father is a traditionalist Catholic, known for his extremely conservative views, which prompted him to move to Australia at one time. Thus, he argued [3] that the Second Vatican Council “was the result of a conspiracy between Jews and Freemasons to control the church,” and the Holocaust was just an invention of the Zionists. Gibson Jr. is also a Catholic. He has been criticized more than once for refusing to condemn his father's reactionary views. He explained that “ his father is his father, and the fact that someone does not like his father’s views is not his problem.”

».

In 1984, Gibson was fined $400 and had his driver's license suspended for three months for driving while intoxicated.[4] According to the actor, his addiction to alcohol almost drove him to suicide[5]. However, on July 28, 2006, Mel Gibson was again arrested for driving while intoxicated: the actor was sitting behind the wheel with an open bottle of tequila. During his arrest, Gibson made anti-Semitic statements that Jews were the cause of all wars in history,[6] which led to harsh criticism from his Hollywood colleagues, television commentators, Jewish organizations, as well as quite harsh statements from some film companies.

In 1992, Gibson was accused of homophobia due to obscene gestures and statements (see [en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Mel_Gibson Mel]) made in an interview with the Spanish newspaper El Pais.[7] Subsequently, he rudely rejected the offer to apologize to homosexuals:

I'll apologize when hell freezes over. They can go to hell (obscene language) [8] Original text

(English)

I'll apologize when hell freezes over. They can fuck off.

He publicly supports traditionalist Catholics on many issues, in particular, he opposed stem cell research and the removal of Terry Schaivo from artificial nutrition.

Regarding The Passion of the Christ, he said in an interview with New Yorker magazine: “There are signs for me. More precisely, signs. They are as clear to me as to all Catholics.” When meeting with Catholics, the director clarified[8] that the film was shot through him by the Holy Spirit, and he was only a follower (“I was just directing traffic”).

Mel Gibson's father

It is impossible to understand the contradictory nature of Mel Gibson without familiarizing yourself with the portrait of his dad. We called this 91-year-old saint a senile - and got excited. The fact is that Father Hutton has always been like this: a primitive mind with exorbitant ambitions. In his youth, he served as a simple conductor on a railroad that operated in the vicinity of New York, but one day he fell from the train, broke his back and ended up in the hospital in a semi-paralyzed state. Doctors believed that he would no longer walk. Hutton thought they were asses. After all, he dreamed of the Virgin Mary, and this is a good sign.

Mel Gibson's father is Hutton

Lying in the ward, he did not idle: he waved his legs, exercising his muscles, sent answers to all the TV quiz shows he saw, and sued the railroad, demanding compensation “for work injury.” The Virgin Mary turned out to be a man of her word. Soon, Father Hutton began to walk, won 21 thousand dollars on a TV quiz and sued the railroad for 145 thousand dollars. Half a century ago this was a lot of money. Having gathered the family, Gibson Sr. said that America was mired in sin and fornication, so they were going to the land of their pious ancestors, to Australia.

Considering that ships with convicts regularly replenished the population of Australia until 1868, and this happened only a century later, dad could have a lot to say about the piety of the family tree. But iron discipline reigned in the family; the household members obeyed without a sound.

People moved from the USA to Australia infrequently—it was usually the other way around. Therefore, the Melbourne Herald newspaper even published in one of its 1968 issues a photo of immigrants with the caption: “Meet the Gibsons - a family of twelve has decided to return to their homeland.” Yes, exactly twelve: Hutton, an ardent opponent of contraception, fathered ten children in the USA, and added an eleventh to them in Australia.

At his new place of residence, he developed in all his glory. Excessively devout before, Hutton now turned into a zealous fighter for the purity of the Catholic faith. Fortunately, the necessary ideology arrived: in Europe, Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre organized a schismatic organization, the Priestly Brotherhood of St. Pius X, for which he was excommunicated. Members of the fraternity demanded that the Catholic Church not make any concessions to the trends of the times. More relevant psalms? Rave! Only biblical texts can be sung. Mass in a language understandable to believers? Never! The Mass must be celebrated only in dead Latin, even though the congregation does not understand a word.

Ecumenism (movement to unite all Christians)? Are you crazy?! To the uninitiated it may seem that there is nothing terrible in the ideology of the brotherhood of St. Pius X - just inert people cling to stupid conventions. In fact, everything is more serious. The fact is that the canonical texts in Latin contain many offensive statements addressed to people of other faiths. In particular, in the text of the Tridentine Mass, worshipers ask God to turn the Jews away from their darkness, to end their blindness and to convert them to Catholicism. It is not surprising that the ranks of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Pius X were full of anti-Semites, for whom Jewish-Masonic conspiracies were the cornerstone of a wretched picture of the world.

The brotherhood quickly acquired branches around the world, including in Australia. The most zealous in the Australian branch was Father Hutton, who dragged the whole family into the sect. So the future movie star Mel Gibson was raised from childhood to be a narrow-minded religious fanatic. The day began with endless prayers and ended with them. There was no television in the house, not for financial reasons, but for reasons of principle. The children knew one showman in the world - Father Hutton, who made angry speeches in front of them, scourging apostates and foreigners.

Is it any wonder that Mel Gibson grew up to be a very controversial person? The creativity in his soul forced Mel to ask logical questions and look for reasonable answers to them. But the ugly upbringing, which required compliance with a mass of idiotic conventions, kept extinguishing healthy impulses. While Mel Gibson sincerely called for common Christian values in his films, he often acted contrary to these values in life. For which he was adored by women and the yellow press.

Mel Gibson and women

As a temperamental person, Mel Gibson has always been attracted to equally temperamental, experienced women. But the morality hammered into the depths of my soul from childhood screamed about immaculate virgins. Therefore, instead of choosing a middle ground, Mel always rushed to extremes. His women are clearly divided into two categories: they are either sacrificial fools, ready to dissolve in a man without a trace, or calculating, cynical bitches, intending to squeeze all the juice out of a man.

The sacrificial fool was one of Gibson's first loves, Deborah, an aspiring actress. For a year and a half, she faithfully followed young Mel on his heels, paid for him in a restaurant, did not demand gifts, inspired him to work, and pulled him away from the bottle. And when she realized that Mel Gibson would not marry her (the argument was the same - “you’re not a virgin!”), she tried to commit suicide. Immediately after their separation, Deborah left the cinema - everything in this area reminded her too much of Mel.

Mel Gibson in the movie "Bounty"

Then Mel Gibson began an affair with his co-star in the film “The Bounty,” a pretty Tahitian woman. After his departure, the Tahitian woman did not cut her wrists, but she also gave up her film career. Years later, she explained to one of Gibson's biographers: "I just couldn't act with anyone else."

Robin Gibson - Mel Gibson's wife

The sacrificial fool, of course, is Mel Gibson's wife, Robin Moore. Here she was one hundred percent virgin - an angular nurse who worked in a shelter for the terminally ill. 23-year-old Mel Gibson met her in the Australian city of Adelaide, where he settled after filming the film “Mad Max.” Gibson was not yet a star; the fee for Max, his third film, was 15 thousand dollars, which had to be stretched until the next filming, God knows when. Therefore, Mel rented the house together with other tenants, including Robin.

“We shared the rent,” says Mel, “we went for food together and did housework. Robin and I became great friends. And one day I realized that I wanted to see her face every morning on my pillow.”

They got married on June 7, 1980, and Robin began to regularly give birth to children (there would be seven of them). Over the next 28 years of marriage, Robin Gibson learned and patiently endured all her husband's vices - heavy drinking bouts, wild binges, drug addiction, which were periodically replaced by hangovers, hysterical repentances, and even suicide attempts.

Robin Moore and Mel Gibson

At the same time, Mel Gibson remained a militant member of the Brotherhood of St. Pius X and regularly drove the family to masses, confessions, and communions. But Robin never complained, for which she became known as “the most patient wife in Hollywood.” Even the scandalous biographical book “Mad Mel,” written by journalist Wensley Clarkson, did not affect their family relationship. Although it carefully recorded all of her husband’s infidelities - with a shoe store saleswoman, with provincial girls from the towns where Mel Gibson traveled around presenting his films. The book was replete with revelations from prostitutes who praised her husband's sexual virtues, and photographs in which a drunken Mel Gibson kissed the heels of his girlfriends' shoes.

Robin Gibson filed for divorce only when Mel - for the first time in their married life - demonstratively brought out his new mistress - the “Russian pianist” Oksana, who joyfully reported to the press about her pregnancy.

Personal life

  • Wife (1980-2011) - Robin Moore; children - Hannah (1981), twins Edward and Christian (1983), Willie (1986), Louis (1988), Milo (1991) and Tommy (2000).

In April 2009, it became known that Gibson and his wife had been living separately for 3 years. On April 17, 2009, Moore filed for divorce, and on April 29, Mel Gibson officially appeared at the premiere of X-Men: Origins. Wolverine" with Oksana Grigorieva. On May 26, Gibson officially announced on the Jay Leno show that Grigorieva was expecting his child[10]. In April 2010, reports emerged that Mel Gibson and Oksana Grigorieva had decided to end their relationship, although they intended to maintain some ties with each other due to the need to co-parent their daughter Lucia[11]. In June 2010, it became known that a trial had begun between Mel Gibson and Oksana Grigorieva over who should raise their daughter. Grigorieva accuses Gibson of giving false testimony to the court[12]. The court ordered Gibson to pay Grigorieva $60 thousand in alimony and pay for the house where she lives with the child.

On December 26, 2011, the marriage of Mel Gibson and Robin Moore was dissolved. Gibson was ordered to pay half of the fortune. In addition, all future income of the actor will also be divided in half with his ex-wife[13].

In October 2012, it became known about the actor’s new romance with athlete and stunt performer Ashley Cusato[14].

On September 17, 2020, it was confirmed that Mel Gibson and 26-year-old writer Rosalind Ross, a former equestrian and acrobat, are expecting their first child, who will become the actor's ninth child.[15][16]

Gibson trained in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.[17]

In 2005, Mel Gibson bought Mango Island from the Japanese hotel chain Tokyu Corporation for $15 million.[18][19]

Oksana Grigorieva

“Russian pianist” Oksana is Oksana Chernukha, aka Oksana Grigorieva (mother’s surname, taken as a creative pseudonym). The former “Miss Saransk” got out of the Russian wilderness with the help of a long multi-pass. First she showed up in London - as a housekeeper for a frail old woman, then she worked as a waitress. She ran off to marry a little-known artist 22 years older than her, got divorced, but during her marriage she managed to acquire connections among secular photographers. All this came in handy when Nikita Mikhalkov asked “Miss Saransk” to translate for the presentation of “The Tired Sun.” There, the clever provincial girl met and charmed one of the James Bonds, the aging Timothy Dalton. Grigorieva gave birth to a son for him. But life together did not work out - and Oksana Grigorieva continued her hunt for rich Pinocchio, moving to Hollywood.

Mel Gibson and Oksana Grigorieva

Soon she was already looking out of Mel Gibson's film trailer and willingly posing for the paparazzi. After Oksana Grigorieva gave birth to Mel Gibson’s daughter, the press began to prophesy that he would decide on a new marriage. But then Mel suddenly saw the light, discovered that his girlfriend’s bust and lips were fake, that she dressed vulgarly and provoked men with her behavior, that she was used by him, pushing her music products (Grigorieva released her album with Gibson’s money).

As usual in the USA, a war between incriminating evidence and lawyers began. Oksana Grigorieva turned out to be surprisingly prudent: she recorded all the temperamental monologues Mel Gibson addressed to her, all his attacks and accusations. All of them were splashed out in the press and the Internet. And here Hollywood will confirm its title as the bastion of hypocrisy throughout America. Mel Gibson's pompous threats to kill his mistress and bury her in the garden under a rose bush, his full of obscenities and accusations of vulgarity against Oksana Grigorieva did not arouse anything but indifferent curiosity among the film bosses. But Gibson’s remark “You’re a disgrace to me, you look like a fucking pig in heat, and if you get raped by a crowd of blacks, it’ll be your own fault” caused great indignation and stormy condemnation among prominent filmmakers of the dream factory. How?! Their colleague dared to call the African Americans - Negro?! After all, this is not politically correct! After all, this is racism!!! And all of Hollywood immediately renounced Mel Gibson.

Mel Gibson and Oksana Grigorieva

Will Gibson survive this latest major scandal - or not? It's difficult to predict. Former friends and colleagues disown him one by one. Leonardo DiCaprio has already changed his mind and refused to star in Gibson’s new film about the Vikings - a film where he was going to recreate the authentic atmosphere of the 9th century. Mel Gibson dreamed about this from his youth: “The first idea about making a film came to my mind at the age of sixteen, and it was about Vikings. Even then, I wanted the actors to speak Old Norse, which I was studying at the time. The idea at that time was quite stupid - because what kind of director was I? It was more like delirium after smoking a joint. However, that's when I first wanted to make a big epic film... I want these Vikings to scare the audience. I don't want them to say something like, "I'll die with a sword in my hand." I don't even want to think about such nonsense. I want the floor to disappear from under the audience’s feet. I want to see someone who speaks in a deep voice, who would scare even myself half to death.”

Mel Gibson

But now Mel will have to give up on such plans. I don't care about fat - I wish I could live. The WME agency, which once made Mel Gibson a star, refused to further represent his acting interests. “Now everyone is afraid to touch Gibson even with a three-meter stick,” a high-ranking agency employee anonymously commented on this for the press. “It’s unlikely that anything will happen to Mel in the near future: no one will cooperate with him. It’s better to try to sell the alcoholic Lindsay Lohan than the racist Mel Gibson.”
