Emelianenko Sr. came to Tula at the turn of the millennium. His wife and daughter remained in Stary Oskol, but there was absolutely not enough money to support the family. Initially, Fedor was ready to fight even in a casino and only dreamed of a good tracksuit - the old one was already falling apart. As soon as the guy was tested by Mikhail Ilyukhin and Magomedkhan Gamzatkhanov (Wolf Khan), it became clear: it was time to stop thinking about casinos - it was better to think about dominating MMA tournaments in Japan. Firstly, it was atmospheric, secondly, it was more or less profitable, and thirdly, there were already connections there thanks to Ilyukhin and Wolf Khan.
They prepared Fedor for Japan for a whole year: they were afraid that if he lost the first fight, he would be immediately written off and would not be called back. Early Emelianenko fought well, but remained a mediocre striker from a technical point of view - only crazy strength saved him. Andrey Byldin and Nikolay Pitkov addressed the gaps in training: the first improved Fedor’s hands, and the second made the fighter universal. In addition, both coaches were constantly looking for other top coaches who would specialize in something specific. For example, Alexander Fedorov and Nikolai Zuev gave advice on the ground - for their sake Emelianenko even flew to Yekaterinburg.

Now Byldin and Pitkov remember those times with nostalgia. Andrei lived in the same room with Fedor, not in an apartment, but in a dormitory at a meat processing plant. They slept on the same couch, went out to cross-country runs together and thought only about sports. Byldin was six years older, but gave in to Emelianenko’s selfish requests: for example, he demanded that lights out be at 22:00 (no TV, it would interfere), and wake-up should be when Fedor wakes up.
Sometimes there were three hard training sessions a day at once - it is not surprising that a versatile fighter who could strangle, knock out, and interrupt opponents flew to Japan. Just a year after his Asian debut, Fedor tore everyone apart at the RINGS tournament, and in the spring of 2003 he took the PRIDE heavyweight title.
In general, Emelianenko’s Japanese period was the most eventful in his career. The short Russian man fought five fights a year, learned to take a blow (he missed a blow to the temple from Fujita, but survived) and became familiar with judicial injustice: at the end of 2000, the fight with Kosaka was stopped due to Fedor’s cut and the Japanese were given a strange victory. We had to wait five years for revenge, otherwise the defeat is still not taken into account - the referees clearly created chaos.
In addition, it was in Japan that Emelianenko received the nickname The Last Emperor. It happened like this: the RINGS champion received the laurel wreath, and Fedor became the final winner because the promotion folded. So there is no direct connection with Nicholas II.

Emelianenko’s most powerful victory from those times was definitely over the Brazilian Nogueira in the fight for the PRIDE title. Before the event, Fedor’s entire team spent hours exploring the famous triangle in which Antonio destroyed previous victims. It seemed that there was no solution, but the Tula coaches turned to their colleagues from Yekaterinburg. They also looked at Nogueira’s signature move and said: the main thing is that the Brazilian does not snap the lock. After that, Fedor won by unanimous decision - not a single painful challenge was applied to his opponent.
According to Byldin and Pitkov, it was in Japan that the crown began to appear on Emelianenko’s head. Fedor was poorly known in Russia, but in Tokyo, Osaka and Yokohama the fighter was really adored - it was not easy for him to leave the hotel. Soon, bidding for contracts began (the champion was whispered that others were earning more), and during training, Emelianenko allowed himself to ignore the coaches’ comments - he said that he knew better how to distribute the load.
We must admit: Fedor’s Tula coaches did not have any advanced managerial skills. They considered the Last Emperor's fees adequate, asked for 30% and most of all wanted him to not go anywhere. Emelianenko, who had earned an income of 60-80 thousand dollars per fight, was not going anywhere, but then the cunning president of M-1 Global, Vadim Finkelstein, appeared on the horizon.
He lured Fedor: he promised hundreds of thousands of dollars and advertising contracts, and also guaranteed worldwide fame. Oddly enough, Vadim did not deceive. For example, by 2010, Emelianenko was earning $1.5 million per fight - a fantastic profit for MMA of those years. With fame it turned out about the same. If in the mid-2000s Fedor was hardly identified in Russia (about 500 people watched the fight with Cro Cop), then towards the end of the decade they were already actively taking pictures with him and dreamed of shaking his hand. Therefore, Emelianenko received everything he left for.

But Byldin and Pitkov were incredibly upset. Firstly, Fedor actually ran away: he didn’t explain anything to his old friends and simply ran off to Finkelstein. Later, the coaches caught the Last Emperor in a Tula hotel, but never heard any intelligible excuses - both are still offended by Emelianenko, who essentially traded them for money.
Secondly, Byldin and Pitkov hint in an interview that after the transfer to Finkelstein, Fedor stopped developing and won for a long time strictly due to the base that was laid in Tula. Then she began to be missed, and defeats immediately began to fall. Of course, this sounds like nonsense in the style of Dmitry Alenichev, but The Last Emperor actually lost to Werdum in 2010 just by triangle - this would not have happened with the first team. So the version that Filkenstein simply monetized the skills invested in Fedor is definitely not delusional: after Tula, the fighter from Stary Oskol progressed noticeably more slowly.
In the 2010s, Emelianenko became completely different. From a humble no-name he has become an icon who walks around with an entourage, works out in a gym decorated with giant portraits of himself, rejoices in victories like the one over Maldonado, and falls 35 seconds into the Bellator final. Of course, everything is super in Fedor’s life now - he is still respected for his old exploits, and his bank account is in perfect order. But there is a feeling: at the late stage of his career, the Last Emperor was terribly lacking in sincere Tula men who were ready to work hard for days for the success of a kind guy who came to their gym in a shabby tracksuit.
