Hollywood's Chief Introvert: 8 Facts About Adam Driver

Adam Driver is magnetic. He does not have an impeccable figure, his facial features are peculiar: according to haters, they look as if the person was depicted by a child, and then the drawing was transferred to 3D. However, Driver does not need the attributes of traditional beauty, because he captivates with his individuality and honest, uncompromising performance on the screen. You believe his Charlie, one of the heroes of Marriage Story, and go through a painful divorce with him.

This week it became known that this particular role could earn the actor an Oscar. Let's tell you what you should know about the life of one of the most private actors of our time.

The Beginning: Walking on Rails and Getting Lost

Adam spent his childhood in San Diego, California. His parents, paralegal Nancy and priest Joe, divorced when the boy was seven years old. The woman quickly found a new husband; he became a preacher of the Baptist church. As is often the case among future actors, Adam did not really like to study, but loved to act in theatrical productions and sketches.

He grew up surprisingly withdrawn: he preferred to spend time alone, in his free time he walked along the railway tracks and, as he himself admits, led an apathetic existence. At the same time, he passionately wanted to play, he even applied to the Juilliard School, but he was rejected - his portfolio did not impress the admissions committee.

I didn’t want to return home - my parents wouldn’t take me back, so Adam went to Hollywood to audition for auditions on his own. However, the car broke down halfway. All the money that Driver took with him went towards repairs. I had to go to my family.

Adam felt angry and insecure for a long time, but the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001 seemed to awaken in him an “overwhelming sense of duty,” and he, tired of the drab everyday life and having absolutely no idea what to do in life, joined the army.

I wasn’t one to hang out with guys like, “Yeah, we’re men! Let’s go eat some meat!..” I don’t know what else the guys are doing there. In short, I never really talked to such people before the army. And then he found himself among entirely alpha males.

- Driver recalls.

After two and a half years of service, he finally entered Juilliard - the guy injured his leg after a mountain bike ride, and he was sent into retirement. Adam re-applied to universities, and this time success awaited him, and with it a long learning curve in the basics of acting.

Personal life of Adam Driver

Adam Driver's wife is Joan Tucker. They studied at Julliard together. “She taught me that you shouldn’t spit in the street, and I discovered the band Rolling Stone for her,” the actor recalled about their first meeting.

In 2006, not yet spouses, but simply a couple in love, founded Arts in the Armed Forces, a non-profit organization whose members participate in free performances for the military. Subsequently, they starred together in the TV series “Girls.” The wedding took place in 2013. The spouses have no children.

Spouses do charity work together

Even after becoming a famous actor, Adam did not establish contact with his mother and stepfather. “We are too different,” the actor sadly stated in an interview.

Free swimming: challenges and phobia

Immediately after studying, Driver played in TV series and then in the theater. After his role in the project “The Unusual,” he was expected to star in “Law and Order,” the film “You Don’t Know Jack” with Al Pacino, and later Adam made his Broadway debut in “The Profession of Mrs. Warren.” However, it was Girls, the Lena Dunham series, that took his career to a new level. In many ways, the role turned out to be autobiographical. The guy played the careless Adam Sackler at first: a man without goals in life, who then realized that he wanted to become an actor. Throughout the project, the viewer observes the transformation of the character - not always for the better.

Later, Driver was noticed by directors of the first magnitude: Adam starred in Spielberg’s “Lincoln,” “Inside Lewis Davis” by the Coen brothers, “Star Wars,” Scorsese’s “Silence,” Jarmusch’s “Patterson.” In every role, he gave his best to the best of his ability. For example, for his role in Scorsese’s project, the actor was forced to quickly lose 18 kilograms.

The combination of a Marine career and an academic background turned the private Driver into the person we know him today: withstanding any challenge, working without respite and at the same time being able to attract without possessing the traditional type of beauty. However, Adam himself admits that he could not get rid of many traits: he hates watching himself from the outside. For this reason, he even ran away from an interview with NPR radio when he was shown an excerpt from “Marriage Story” with his participation.

I can't stand watching myself. For example, in “Lincoln” I only have two important scenes, and both of them irritate me terribly. When I watch it, I want to fix something, replay it. Real paranoia. And it's the same with Girls. In the end, I decided that if I continued filming, I didn’t want to know which scenes would end up in the series and which ones wouldn’t. I am lucky to work with people who can be completely trusted in this regard.

- he admits.
