Debut

Not everyone managed to achieve fame right away. Ivars Kalnins was no exception. The biography and personal life of the actor after the first roles he played did not interest the public. The newcomer made his debut in the film “Ilga-Oriole”. This film is dedicated to the destinies and exploits of the heroes of World War II.

Then Ivar appeared in the films “The Right to Jump” and “Sancho’s Faithful Friend.” Small roles helped him stop being afraid of the camera. The leadership of the Latvian Conservatory did not encourage its students to act in films, but they willingly made an exception for the charming Kalnins.

Career of Ivars Kalnins

It was Ivar’s admission to the theater department that marked the beginning of his dizzying acting career. Two years before receiving his diploma, he joined the Rainis Theater Theater troupe. The next significant degrees of his career were

  • meeting Via Artmane and role in the film “Theater”,
  • invitations to theaters in the capital of the USSR,
  • main and supporting roles in “Winter Cherry” and other films,
  • participation in reality shows and intellectual programs,
  • musical duets with vocal stars and other achievements.

Ivar Kalnins can boast of a partnership with the best representatives of the acting world of the Soviet and post-Soviet periods, or rather, many of them can be proud of having starred with him in films by the best directors.

Movies

Immediately after entering the Conservatory, the spectacular young man began to be invited to films, and ultimately, Soviet television films brought Ivars Kalnins popularity in the USSR.

Ivar Kalnins in the film "Theater"

The young actor appeared in the melodrama “Ilga-Oriole”, the children’s film “Sancho’s Faithful Friend”, the sports drama “The Right to Jump”, and the social drama “An Apple in the River”. But all these films gave Ivars Kalnins only local fame within the Baltic states.

The real fame of a magnificent actor was brought to him by the drama “Theatre”, where he was invited by Via Artmane herself, who played the main role in this film, and Ivar got the image of the young Tom Fennell, practically a boy who decided to hit on the aging prima donna. The image of the young, stately (the actor is 185 cm tall) hero-lover was to the taste of the audience. After the release of “Theater,” Kalnins woke up famous throughout the Soviet Union.

Ivar Kalnins in the film “Winter Cherry”

This success was followed by the detective story “Inspector Gull,” the drama “Don’t Shoot White Swans,” the action movie “I Can’t Guarantee Personal Safety,” and the melodrama “White Dance.” Ivar Kalnins reached a new level of popularity after filming the film adaptation of the operetta “Silva”, where his partners were excellent screen masters Vitaly Solomin, Igor Dmitriev, Maria Solomina, Zhanna Glebova, Mikhail Svetin and many other artists.

Kalnins' next significant work was the tragicomedy "Winter Cherry", written according to the script by Vladimir Valutsky. No less interesting was the collaboration with Igor Kostolevsky in the detective story “Entrance to the Labyrinth”, Elena Kondulainen in the drama “Show for a Single Man” and Vera Glagoleva in the melodrama “Night of Questions”.

It is interesting that the film acting career of Ivars Kalnins, unlike many of his colleagues, practically did not stop either in the 90s or in the 21st century. He starred in the action film “Mirror Wars: The First Reflection”, the crime series “Opera: Chronicles of Homicide”, the melodrama “City Romance”, the drama “The Forgotten”, the comedy “Aunties”, the action movie “Drongo”, the melodrama “Queen of Ice”. And these are just the main roles of recent years. In total, Ivar has more than 90 films to his credit. The actor pleased his fans with his vocal abilities. Ivar performed the composition “Yellow Leaves” together with Laima Vaikule.

Ivar Kalnins: childhood years

The future actor was born in Riga in August 1948. Ivars Kalnins was born into a low-income family, which does not prevent him from recalling his childhood years with pleasure. His parents had many children, so his mother was forced to do housework. My father worked as a car mechanic. The parents hoped that their son would acquire a simple male profession, but fate decreed otherwise.

As a child, Ivars Kalnins was interested in music. As a teenager, he joined several rock bands at once, which his mother and father were very unhappy with. In those years, the boy did not cut his hair and wore fashionable bell-bottom trousers. He had the opportunity to perform at concerts in Jurmala and Riga, and this activity even brought in a small income.

However, Ivar was much more attracted to the world of cinema. Visiting the cinema almost from the first years of his life became the boy’s favorite way to spend his leisure time. It is known that he always tried to come long before the start of the session in order to admire the paintings hanging in the foyer.

Finest hour

Ivar Kalnins owes his popularity not only to his charm, attractive appearance and talent. The filmography of the aspiring actor acquired his first star film thanks to Viya Artmane. It was this film star who once decided that a young man should embody the image of her lover in the drama “Theater”, the plot of which was borrowed from the work of Somerset Maugham. She chose him from dozens of applicants who gathered at the Riga Film Studio. It is interesting that such an unexpected decision gave rise to gossip about the star’s love affair with the young actor.

In “Theatre,” Kalnins played Tom Fennell, his character, for selfish reasons, becomes the lover of an aging prima donna. The film was presented to the audience in 1978, after its release Ivar literally woke up famous. “Theatre” gave the aspiring actor not only the love of the public, but also a role. Directors began to actively offer him the roles of hero-lovers. For some time this even bothered the actor Kalnins, who dreamed of embodying images that were different from each other.

Love, family

There is one more fact that deserves attention in his biography. Ivars Kalnins and his wives are a topic that has haunted the public for many years. The talented actor entered into legal marriage three times. In 1971, Ivar married a girl named Ilga, who had nothing to do with the world of dramatic art. The actor's first wife gave birth to two daughters. The girls were named Una and Elena.

For the second time, Kalnins married Aurelia Anužite. He met this actress through his work on the film “The Secrets of the de Grandchamp Family.” They played lovers on camera. The relationship that began on the set moved into real life. Ivar is 24 years older than Aurelia, but this did not stop the lovers. The actors played a wedding. The second wife gave Ivar a son, who was named Mikus. The marriage broke up seven years later, the reasons for which remained behind the scenes.

Kalnins' third wife was a girl named Laura, a lawyer by profession. She is almost 30 years younger than him. The wife gave Ivar daughters Louise and Vivienne. Ivar still lives with Laura.
