Biography of Hmayak Hakobyan
The artist spent most of the 61 years of his life on the circus stage and film sets. Hmayak was born on December 1, 1956 in the family of opera singer and illusionist Harutyun Hmayakovich Akopyan. During Soviet times, he had so many international awards that he needed no introduction.
His mother did not immediately go to the theater; at first she was an assistant to Hmayak Hakobyan’s father. The child grew up in a unique creative environment, and his choice of profession was a foregone conclusion. Even as a child, the boy began to surprise his relatives with his abilities.
Akopyan’s mother, Lidia Ivanovna, was a graduate of the conservatory, a soloist of Mosestrada. She often hosted his concerts and sang old romances during the break between numbers. She was a great woman! A true beauty. All her life Lydia was a support for her husband and his strong rear. Harutyun Amayakovich Akopyan and Lydia Ivanovna lived 54 years in perfect harmony. Almost all their lives they held each other's hands, literally and figuratively.
Childhood and youth
Hmayak Harutyunovich Akopyan was born on December 1, 1956 in the city of great opportunities - Moscow. The artist’s father Harutyun Hakobyan was a famous Soviet magician, so it is not surprising that from an early age Hmayak enjoyed the mysterious world of illusions and magic. The sorcerer’s mother worked for a long time as an assistant in her husband’s team, but later began performing as an opera singer.

According to the magician, his parents always encouraged what he was interested in. Fencing, dancing, sports - no matter what the future sorcerer chooses, the head of the family and mother would in any case support their beloved son.
At first, the magician dreamed of becoming an artist. The idea of connecting his life with painting came to Hakobyan during his school years. Then he became friends with the daughter of the artist Vladimir Serov. It was she who brought Hmayak to his father’s workshop, where the sorcerer spent his childhood.
Hmayak Hakobyan in childhood
After the artist’s death, Hakobyan abandoned his brushes and easel, giving up his dream of painting for the rest of his life. At this moment, the mother, who had years of study at the conservatory behind her, sent her son to a music school.
Later, she began to call the heir a disturber of the peace of the piano keys, since Amayak literally knocked the sound out of the instrument with sharp sweeping movements.
One day, actress Rina Zelenaya came to visit her father and asked the boy to play a composition to please his ears. The future magician initially refused, but eventually sat down at the instrument, deciding to play a song from the repertoire of “The Beatles”.
Hmayak Hakobyan in his youth
When the music stopped, the atmosphere was filled with metaphysical horror. Rina Vasilievna, in order to redirect attention, asked why the young talent did not use the pedal mechanism. The boy immediately stated that he was still playing too slowly to apply the brakes. After that, the ringing laughter of the parents did not subside in the room for a couple of minutes.
From the biography of the illusionist it is known that after graduating from school, Hakobyan entered the State School of Circus and Variety Arts, but he did not stay there for long, because the institution paid much attention to the physical education of students. Classes in gyms were an integral part of the training of circus performers.
Hmayak Hakobyan
For a long time, Hmayak led the ranks of the most flexible and strong students, but at one point all previous successes were called into question by an accidental injury. While performing one of the exercises, the magician “earned” a crack in his spine. For this reason, the magician soon left the circus school.
After leaving GUTSEI, the talented guy entered GITIS. In this place he developed his innate talent as an actor, as well as the skills of an illusionist.
Infancy in a trick box
Due to insurmountable circumstances, Akopyan’s father and mother were unable to live together immediately after the wedding. From the maternity hospital, Hmayak was brought to the room where his grandmother and mother lived. It was an amazing place - a house with a corridor system, which was located at Moscow, st. Neglinnaya, 20. It was built by the rich man Echkin in the century before last. The building resembled a hotel. It was built specifically for Echkin’s servants. Lived here:
- grooms;
- waiters;
- maids;
- lackeys.
Then the rooms in this house began to be rented out. Mostly people from villages and provinces settled here. Akopyan’s grandmother moved into this house with her little daughter before the war. They had a tiny room with an area of 9 meters at their disposal.
The father really wanted to make a wonderful crib for the baby, not like everyone else’s. He ordered it from a master and drew his own sketch. Having received a fairly impressive amount as an advance payment from the artist, he started drinking and did not place the order on time.
Then at the family council it was decided that the baby would sleep in a magic box, with which Harutyun Hakobyan traveled halfway around the world. In addition, there was a special mirror in it, which created the effect of emptiness. In such a magical place, little Hakobyan spent the first months of his life.
Artist Hakobyan Sr. could not meet the guests without an extravaganza. When guests first crossed the threshold to see the newborn, the magician showed him an empty box. Then he covered it with a cloth and the baby appeared! The surprise of the guests knew no bounds. Naturally, the child was in the box all the time. The mirror created a magical effect.
It is interesting that Akopyan had an older brother who had never touched a magician’s equipment in his life. He became a translator; creativity, magic and sorcery did not appeal to him in any way.
About the first experience on stage
Hmayak first appeared on stage at the age of five. His father worked at New Year's performances. He had a chic outfit: a turban, an embroidered oriental robe, and in his hands was a tobacco pouch, which he turned inside out, showing that it was empty. At the same instant, a dove appeared from it! The bird landed on the illusionist's shoulder. The pouch at that time turned into a velvet cloak.
He showed the outfit from all sides to the audience. Suddenly, a small Amayak appeared from under it, tumbling. In his hands was a cage in which the bird was enclosed. Hmayak had the same robe and turban as his father. It looked very funny. And this was the secret of the trick, which turned out to be very difficult.
During the artist’s appearance, the child was between his legs, in special stirrups that were attached to the father’s limbs under the robe. The artists performed side by side. Especially to perform this trick, Hakobyan Sr. did 50 squats every day.
Study at the Surikov Art School
The boy studied at the Surikov Art School, but, unfortunately, did not graduate. Hakobyan did not receive a diploma because of laziness or his own whim. Serov himself taught him at the educational institution. Unfortunately, he died early, which caused great emotional trauma to the boy, since the teacher was one of the closest people to him. After this, the child was never able to return to school. Hmayak was friends with Serov’s daughter, Mashenka. And he was also a real knight! While practicing Greco-Roman wrestling, he could punch anyone who attacked Maria Serova or any other young lady in the nose.
The boy was a terrible bully. Not only did he constantly fight, defending someone’s honor, but he also painted all the textbooks beyond recognition. Classmates deliberately slipped books to the young artist. Portraits of historical figures changed beyond recognition! For this, Hakobyan, naturally, got into trouble from the adults.
Later he entered the variety and circus school. After him, he successfully graduated from GITIS.
While studying at a circus school, Hmayak receives a severe spinal injury. This incident forces him to give up his serious hobby - Greco-Roman wrestling. In addition, the guy was engaged in choreography; the future magician Hmayak Hakobyan grew up with such a versatile personality.

Where did the famous illusionist Hmayak Hakobyan disappear from the screens (Photo, Video)
Everyone knew the smiling and cheerful sorcerer Hmayak Hakobyan The inimitable maestro worked real miracles on screens, starred in films and even hosted the TV show “Good Night, Kids!” for some time. Children adored the character of Hmayak, the good-natured sorcerer Rakhat Lukumych.
In the 80s and 90s, the illusionist was in great demand, and it seemed that Hakobyan would never leave television screens. However, already in the 2000s, the wizard suddenly disappeared from public view . The most devoted fans of the magician are still wondering what happened to their idol...
Few people know that Hmayak’s main inspiration was his father. Harutyun Hakobyan, a world-famous illusionist, was once trained as a builder, but one day he saw a magician perform and disappeared. Having independently learned magic tricks, Harutyun later became a professional artist, touring both throughout the USSR and abroad.
Akopyan Sr.’s wife was first his assistant, but then retrained as an opera singer. And the son, Hmayak, at first generally wanted to become an artist. Alas, Akopyan Jr. did not finish his studies at art school; he left the circus school due to a back injury, but found his calling, following in his father’s footsteps.
The skill of an illusionist, charm and characteristic appearance opened the way for Hmayak to the cinema. Most often, the artist played magicians, but his track record also includes other, more extensive and serious roles.
Hakobyan was extremely popular, the public adored the kind-hearted wizard. At his performances in the hall there was nowhere for the apple to fall!
Most of all, Hmayak was loved by children, whom he fascinated with his tricks. However, among the sorcerer’s admirers there were not only pure souls.
Gamblers literally besieged the maestro, trying to find out the secrets of card tricks from him. But Hakobyan, a stranger to greed, always refused representatives of the criminal world, considering himself first and foremost a man of art.
Friends and acquaintances of Hmayak say that in life he was completely different than on the screen. Most characteristically, the man did not like being called a magician.
The artist responded to people who called Hakobyan this way with a sharp rebuke. “Our magicians are Berezovsky, Mavrodi, Khodorkovsky, and the task of the illusionist is to elevate stage deception to the rank of respected professions!”
In 1996, Hmayak first appeared as the host of the program “Good night, kids!” Invited guest Hakobyan quickly turned into a regular participant in the TV show and for several years in a row demonstrated his amazing skills to children from the screens every night.
The personal life of the man, who was a member of the international society of illusionists, did not work out. Hmayak, who was married three times, was divorced three times. The man's only son, Philip, moved with his mother to the United States.
The man is a talented programmer and a skilled dancer. Philip Hakobyan has repeatedly won American Latin American dance competitions.
When Hmayak disappeared from television screens, fans had many versions of what happened. They said that the maestro moved overseas or went into business, opening his own casino. They even whispered that Hakobyan had drunk himself.
The latter was closest to the truth: after the death of his father in 2005, Amayak began to drown his grief in cognac. Fortunately, when doctors warned him of the danger during a medical examination, the illusionist came to his senses and stopped drinking.
In recent years, the artist has been living as a recluse as he takes care of his sick mother. The woman needs round-the-clock supervision, and the exemplary son Hakobyan, having left his career, helps his parent as best he can.
Only recently has the sorcerer begun to appear in public more often. Sometimes Hmayak even appears on stage as of old, and the audience testifies: the illusionist is still capable of bewitching anyone!
