The unusual parents of Arthur Vakha
Due to his rather extraordinary appearance (in which others notice features of eastern peoples, gypsies, as well as Jews and Bulgarians), fans of the artist’s talent often wonder where Arthur Vakha comes from. The nationality of the actor, meanwhile, is Russian; he was born in the Northern capital of the Russian Federation in 1964.
But his mother, Volya Vasilievna, is from Ukraine. Father, Viktor Arturovich, has Estonian-German roots. The artist owes his exotic beauty to this multinational genetic “cocktail”.
Arthur Vakha's parents, however, managed to distinguish themselves not only by their unusual origin. The artist’s mother has an unusual name - Volya. She was named after a beautiful gypsy woman who lived in a camp on the outskirts of Krivoy Rog and became famous throughout the area for her ability to dance and sing provocatively. His mother’s name largely determined his character - all her life she showed herself to be a freedom-loving and persistent person. Having become interested in designing buildings, Volya Vasilievna studied to be an architect, and at one time an entire residential block in Tallinn was built according to her design. Later, the freedom-loving woman lost interest in this profession, became interested in theater and studied to be a director. Having moved to Leningrad, here she met her future husband, actor Viktor Vakha.
Unlike his wife, Viktor Arturovich did not have a specialized education, which did not prevent him from being an excellent actor. For several years the couple lived peacefully, especially since they had a son, who received the name Arthur in honor of his paternal grandfather. But when the boy was barely three, his father left the family. Since then, the artist has not seen him and knows nothing about his future fate.
Left alone with her son, Volya Vasilievna was able to put the child on his feet and build a career. At first she worked as a director in one of the Leningrad theaters. Later she was invited to teach at the Music Hall studio.
Biography
Arthur Vakha was born into an acting family. His mother, Volya Vakha, is Ukrainian by birth and is an architect by first education. She has achieved some success in her profession - a block designed by her was built in Tallinn. However, her love for the theater forced her to change architecture and take up directing. Later, Volya Vasilyevna became a professor, teaching acting. An unusual name was given to her by Arthur’s grandmother, who lived in Krivoy Rog, on the outskirts of which there was a gypsy camp. One of the gypsies named Volya fascinated her with her beauty, singing and dancing. The mother of the future actor was named in honor of the talented representative of the freedom-loving people.
Arthur's father has Estonian-German roots. The surname Vakha is translated from Estonian as “wax”, which is quite consistent with Viktor Vakha’s acting background. He was a traveling artist. He left the family when his son was only three years old. Arthur doesn’t remember his dad well and knows almost nothing about his further fate.
The future actor spent his childhood in the heart of St. Petersburg, near the Liteiny Bridge. In one of his interviews, he said: “My mother and I lived in a large communal apartment in the center of St. Petersburg, and artists, performers, and poets came to visit us every now and then. My mother is an intelligent woman; interesting people gather around her all her life.”
The boy grew up a hooligan and a C student, changed four educational institutions, briefly attended a music school, and thought about becoming a surgeon. However, the creative atmosphere that Arthur absorbed with his mother’s milk predetermined his choice in favor of the stage. “I always knew that I would be an actor,” Vakha admitted later.
First stage experience
At the age of six, Arthur Vakha attended one of the rehearsals of the play “A Man from the Outside” at the Lensovet Theater, where his mother was at that time an assistant to director Igor Vladimirov. During the production process, Igor Petrovich came up with the idea of introducing a child into the play. Quite by chance, Volya’s little son caught his eye. The boy was told what to do on stage, and he coped with his task perfectly. This tiny role was the first in the life of the future artist. He performed it for six years, treating his friends to ice cream with modest fees. Arthur did not yet realize that he was appearing on the same stage with famous actors, among whom were Alisa Freindlich, Anatoly Ravikovich, Leonid Dyachkov.
Student years
After eight years, Vakha went to enter the Gorky (now Nizhny Novgorod) theater school, but was not allowed to take the exams. He returned home and was enrolled in the Music Hall studio, where his mother taught. While studying to become a conversational artist, he completed his tenth year as an external student.
In 1980, he successfully passed the exams at LGITMiK. The actor later said: “It’s interesting that years later, at the state exam in acting at LGITMiK, Alisa Brunovna found herself on the examination committee and, when she heard the name Vakha, she immediately realized who I was.” He studied on the course of Vladimir Petrov together with Larisa Guzeeva and Alexander Lykov. After college, he served in the army in tank forces.
The childhood years of the future actor
Arthur Vakha spent his childhood in a communal apartment near the Liteiny Bridge. Despite the fact that he and his mother lived rather modestly, the artist retained the warmest memories of this time.
Although Volya Vasilyevna tried her best to raise a worthy man from her son, Arthur Vakha grew up as a restless hooligan. He studied poorly at school and constantly played pranks, which is why he changed his place of study four times.
The boy did not think about working in the theater, because he dreamed more of a medical career. But, as they say, the acting profession chose him.
One day Volya Vasilyevna had no one to leave her son with and she took the boy with her to work. At that time, the woman worked as an assistant to the director of “A Man from the Outside” at the Lensovet Theater. During the rehearsal, it was decided that the play should have a child character, who was asked to play six-year-old Arthur, running around idly behind the scenes. The first role, albeit an episodic one, worked out so well for the boy that he played it for several years.
Biography[edit | edit code]
Born on January 13, 1964 in Leningrad.
His mother is director, professor, acting teacher Volya Vasilyevna Vakha, his father is actor Viktor Arturovich Vakha, of Estonian-German origin[2].
For the first time Arthur appeared on the stage of the theater. Lensovet as a six-year-old boy. His debut was the role of Alyosha Cheshkov in Igor Vladimirov’s production of “A Man from the Outside.”
In 1980, he entered the Leningrad State Institute of Theater, Music and Cinematography on the course of V. Petrov, studied together with Alexander Lykov and Larisa Guzeeva.
Upon completion of training, the actor receives an invitation to the Leningrad Comedy Theater. But soon there is some adjustment to the actor’s creative plans: he spends a year and a half serving in the army in the training tank repair battalion (military unit 10836) of the Guards Sertolov Motorized Rifle Division in Sertolovo-1. He completed his service in the village of Sapernoye. Military rank - senior sergeant.
In 1986, he began working at the Comedy Theater, where he still appears on stage today, but as a guest actor. Since 2005, Artur Viktorovich has been accepted into the troupe of the Lensovet Theater.
Work in cinema begins in the 1990s, both on camera (1990 - “Sideburns”) and behind the scenes (1995 - voicing a character in the series “Parallel Worlds”), individual roles and dubbing the series “Gangster Petersburg” and “Streets of Broken Lanterns.” He voiced the character of Michael Ironside in the film “Terminator: May the Savior Come”, the Prophet in “Surrogates”, as well as the character played by Sylvester Stallone in the film “Rocky Balboa”.
Arthur Vakha: biography as a student
Having completed the eighth grade with difficulty, the future actor was expelled from school with very mediocre grades in his certificate. The only future that lay ahead of him was to learn one of the blue-collar professions at some vocational school.
However, by that time Arthur Vakha realized that his calling was to be an actor. Therefore, he went to Gorky, since there was a theater school there that accepted students after the eighth grade. But the young man failed miserably at the entrance exams.
Returning to Leningrad, on the advice of Vakha’s mother, Arthur was enrolled in the spoken genre artist department at the Music Hall studio, where Volya Vasilievna taught.
In the next two years of study, the young man proved that he was capable of much, and graduated from the studio with good grades. Later, he submitted documents to LGITMiK and, having successfully passed all the exams, was enrolled in the first year with V. Petrov.
While studying at LGITMiK, young Arthur Vakha managed to show his amazing talent. The roles he played in numerous student productions managed to convince even the most meticulous skeptics that Vakha would make an excellent artist.
The most famous characters he played during his studies were Fanfan-Tulip from the play of the same name and the young disabled front-line soldier Mihai from Red Wine of Victory.
After graduating from the institute, Arthur Vakha (photo below) joined the army, where he served his time in a repair brigade of tank troops.
The experience acquired during this period of life later came in handy for the artist more than once, because many of his heroes were military men: NKVD Lieutenant Colonel Cherny from the television series “Katya. Continuation", Lieutenant Zamansky from the "White Guard", Major General Shlyakhtin from the film "That's the Way the Stars Aligned" and many others.
Students
After the eighth grade, student Vakh’s report card showed only C grades.
He was not allowed to continue his studies at school, and he did not want to go to a vocational school. Arthur went to Gorky to enroll in drama school. However, he didn’t make it to the exams, so he returned home and entered the Music Hall studio. His mother taught there. He studied the art of conversation, and at the same time completed his tenth year as an external student. Then, in 1980, Arthur Vakha entered Vladimir Petrov’s course at LGITMiK. Alexander Lykov and Larisa Guzeeva became classmates. Already as a student, Vakha gained theatrical fame. Arthur played Fanfan-Tulip and many came to watch him. Fanfana was truly great. The actor managed not to imitate Gerard Philippe, even despite the lack of experience. In addition, in the training production “Red Wine of Victory,” Vakha played a young driver quite touchingly and poignantly.
The first years of work in the theater
Finding himself in civilian life in 1986, Vakha Arthur received an invitation to work at the Comedy Theater. N. P. Akimova.
On the stage of this institution, the artist embodied a wide variety of images, which turned out to be surprisingly sincere and natural. It didn’t matter whether his hero was the main or secondary - the artist made each role unique. Among the most famous performances in which Vakha played at the Comedy Theater are “Twelfth Night” (Sir Andrew Egyuchik), “The Shadow” (Theodore-Christian) and “The Importance of Being Earnest” (Algernon Moncrief).
Working at the Akimov Theater, the actor soon realized that he was not fully using his potential. Therefore, in parallel with his main work, he began to participate in productions of other experimental theaters: “The Comedian’s Shelter”, “Farses” and the Russian State Academic Theater of Theater named after. G. Tovstonogov.
Theater
When Vakha graduated from college, he was immediately invited to work at the Comedy Theater. There, the actor was entrusted with the serious role of Sir Aguechick in Shakespeare's play Twelfth Night. Arthur tried not to be like famous actors who have already played this role, but to play it in a new way, adding his own colors and personal vision of the main character.
Arthur Vakha in the theater
In addition, the artist had many more famous roles at the Comedy Theater, among which it is impossible not to mention Cleonte in “The Passion of Molière,” the Shadow in Schwartz’s play, and the characters in “Talents of a Generation” and “Meal is Served.” Once Arthur even managed to play 5 roles in the enterprise “The Death of Tarelkin”.
Vakha served in the theater until 2002. After this, he submitted his resignation, but did not stop playing at the Comedy Theater. The artist became a kind of “free artist”. And only in 2005 he changed his already native stage to the Lensovet Theater.
Arthur Vakha and Oksana Bazilevich in the play “Five Evenings”
The first role in the new place is Andrei Babich in the premiere of “Conspiracy of Feelings.” Many critics still consider this work to be the most important and best of the entire creative career of Arthur Vakha on stage.
First roles in films and television
While still studying at LGITMiK, Arthur Vakha was invited to act as an extra in the two-part film “Captain Fracass”. And although after graduation the artist focused on his career in the theater, on occasion he did not refuse to act in films, because, as you know, the theater is the place where the actor plays, and the cinema is where he earns money and fame.
In the eighties, the aspiring artist with the exotic name Arthur Vakha was no longer invited to act. His filmography expanded significantly in the nineties, after his role in the comedy film “Sideburns.” Among Vakha’s most memorable characters from that period are the theater administrator from the film “Everything will be fine”, the president of the foundation in one of the episodes “Streets of Broken Lanterns, the namesake racketeer from “Chichi”.
With the advent of the new millennium, Arthur Vakha began to appear a lot in television series. His appearance in individual episodes of the television projects “National Security Agent”, “Deadly Force” and “NLS Agency” led to the fact that the artist began to be recognized on the streets and asked for an autograph.
In 2002, the actor played Katala Khamchik in the crime television series “Named Baron.”
Although the role was small, Vakha performed it simply masterfully. He managed to show the versatility of his hero, who aroused in the audience not only contempt, but also admiration, sympathy and a whole range of other feelings.
After the role of Khachik, Arthur Vakha became incredibly popular in cinema and television. Films and television series with his participation began to appear on screens every year.
Film work
In total, the actor’s filmography includes more than 200 films and serial projects. It should be noted that his first film debut took place in 1984 in the film “Captain Fracasse”, but universal love came to him only 6 years later, thanks to the film “Sideburns”.
In 1999, the actor was awarded the title of Honored Artist of Russia.
The actor became popular after participating in the film “Named Baron,” where he played the role of a brave gambler with a gambling streak, skillfully winning the hearts of young ladies. It was 2001.
From that time on, Vakha became attached to the role of a seducer of women's hearts , a hero-lover, a ladies' man and a real adventurer. The actor retreated a little from his image in the series “Women’s Romance” in 2004, where he appeared in the image of a decent man Peter, who, after the death of his wife, suffers from serious depression.
In 2020, he will play in the TV series “Green Van. A completely different story,” appearing in the role of Bosun. In 2006, he pleased with several roles in the series “Cop Wars 3” - Abramov and “Clinic” - Lamitsky, “Friend or Foe” - Gamernik, “Labyrinths of the Mind.”

In addition to working in films and filming TV series, Vakha does voice acting. Even his relatives don’t always recognize his voice when watching his projects, marveling at how talented Arthur is.
Lensoveta Theater
Since the artist began acting a lot in the 2000s, he decided to leave the Comedy Theater. N. P. Akimova.
Until 2005, the actor participated in productions of various theaters as a guest performer. Although Arthur Vakha really liked this practice, when he was invited to the Lensovet theater troupe, he could not refuse, because almost every artist in the country dreamed of playing there.
Over the years of work here, the actor played the roles of Andrei Babichev in “Conspiracy of Feelings”, Yegor Cherkun in “Barbarians”, Boris Alikhanov in “Reserve” and Willy Loman in “Death of a Salesman” and several others.
Unfortunately, due to chronic busyness on set, today Arthur Vakha rarely plays in plays.

Demand for an actor on television
Over the past fifteen years, Artur Viktorovich has played more than fifty roles. Some of the images he created were so successful that they migrated from project to project. For example, the artist played Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev twice - in the television projects “Brezhnev” and “Furtseva. The Legend of Catherine".
Vakha played a lot of roles of people in power. So, in “Palm Sunday” he was the head of the TV channel, in “Roasted Hare Berlin Style” he was a chef, in the series “Katya. Continuation" - the head of a prison camp, in "Pregnancy Test" - the head physician, and in "The Freudian Method" with Ivan Okhlobystin in the title role - the head of the department, Colonel Galchansky.
Often an artist moves away from his usual role and tries his hand at roles that are unusual for him.
Thus, remembering his youthful passion for non-format music, Arthur Vakha played a rock musician in the television series “The Godfather.” It is worth mentioning that in his free time from work, the artist sings in the group “Flock “FLY”.” And although this musical group has not become widely known, its members have been giving small concerts in St. Petersburg for several years. In one of his interviews, Vakha said that becoming the vocalist of a rock band was his cherished childhood dream, which he managed to realize only on the threshold of his 45th anniversary.
Among the most significant professional achievements in recent years is his role in the film “Battalion,” where he again worked with Ekaterina Vilkova, with whom he previously starred in “Palm Sunday.”
The year 2020 became a particularly fruitful year for the artist: during it, Arthur Vakha took part in 11 projects. At the moment this is his personal record, but it is far from the limit.

Voice acting work
Among the many talents with which nature so generously rewarded this man is an amazing timbre of his voice. Thanks to him, Arthur Viktorovich mastered the profession of voice and dubbing actor since the mid-nineties.
At first, the main character of the animated series The Tick spoke in the velvety voice of Baja, then Mr. Potato Head from Toy Story and all its sequels, and starting with the film “Face Off,” the actor began voicing and dubbing characters in films.
During his career in this field, Arthur Viktorovich became the voice of many movie characters, but in most cases these were minor characters. But there were exceptions. Thus, the artist voiced the main character of the film Hellboy: Hero from Hell, as well as Rocky Balboa himself in the 2006 film of the same name.

Arthur Vakha: personal life
Very often, when admiring a movie character, viewers tend to believe that the performer of this role also has similar character traits. Arthur Vakha was no exception, a biography whose personal life is not at all similar to the fate of his heroes, but this often goes unnoticed by his fans. So, many of the characters he played are ladies' men. However, as the artist admits, he is not like that. Although now Arthur Viktorovich does not have a permanent life partner, this is not due to his supposedly numerous novels, which the yellow press sometimes attributes to him, but to the fact that he has not yet met the woman with whom he would like to connect his life.
In the past, Arthur Vakha had a failed marriage with actress Irina Tsvetkova, with whom they played together at the Akimov Comedy Theater. Despite their common profession, Arthur Vakha was never able to build a lasting marriage with the charming Irina.
After the divorce, the actor’s wife stayed to live with their common daughter Masha. Although they broke up with the girl’s mother, the artist takes an active part in the fate of his daughter. So, both Arthur and Maria are fond of tourism, so they have already traveled with tents almost all of Russia and the neighboring countries.
By the way, Masha Vakha recently graduated from school and decided to continue her acting dynasty by entering the theater institute. Although her parents were not delighted with their child’s choice (knowing firsthand how difficult it is to succeed in this simpler field), Irina and Arthur still accepted their daughter’s choice.
Interesting facts about the actor
- After the divorce, the artist began to live with his mother again. And to make it more fun, they got a cat, Varvara. Despite the Slavic name, the animal’s breed is uncharacteristic for Russia - the Sphynx (the cat has no hair).
- Even in his distant childhood, while playing his tiny role in “The Man from the Outside,” Vakha had the opportunity to work with Alisa Freundlich herself. And a few years later, at an audition at LGITMiK, this actress was on the admissions committee and, recognizing her former “colleague,” helped him get admitted.
- In 1999, Artur Viktorovich was awarded the title of Honored Artist of the Russian Federation.
- The actor loves poetry very much and knows a lot of them. Moreover, he writes his own depending on his mood. Although a lot of poems have accumulated over the years, Arthur Vakha is not yet planning to publish his collection, but does not exclude such a possibility.
- Arthur Viktorovich’s favorite dish is Irish stew, but not in its traditional form, but the way it was prepared by the heroes of the book “Three in a Boat, Not Counting the Dog.” In other words, the actor tends to add whatever is in his refrigerator to the stew.
Although this artist has already passed his fifth decade, he is full of strength and optimism. At such an advanced age, Arthur Vakha is not afraid to engage in extreme sports, such as diving and parachute jumping, believing that one should enjoy life to the fullest while such an opportunity still exists.
