His interest in acting awoke in high school. He attended high school in the city of Emmaus, where there was a pretty good amateur theater.
Dane DeHaan showed acting talent during his school years
In his senior year, he transferred to the School of the Arts at the University of North Carolina. “This is where I was surrounded by creators for the first time,” Dane later recalled. Here he continued his studies, graduating in 2008. During his years of study, he made his debut on the big stage, being an understudy for Haley Osment in the Broadway production of American Buffalo.
Biography
DeHaan was born on February 6, 1986 in Allentown, Pennsylvania, to Jeff DeHaan and Cynthia Bosha. DeHaan has an older sister, Megan, and a nephew, Addison.
He graduated from Emmaus High School and then from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Cameo roles in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and AKA: It's a Wiley World!
did not bring him popularity, but gave him a good start to his nascent acting career. The next project was the series “Patients,” where DeHaan’s partner was the famous Gabriel Byrne.
It was then that DeHaan's real creative life began. Critics enthusiastically accepted his impeccable performance, and directors became interested in the young and promising actor. He landed a role in the TV series True Blood and made his Broadway debut in American Buffalo.
, began filming two related films, “Risk Factor” and “Shadow from the Past,” in which he played, if not the main, but quite significant role.
In addition to the two previous films, Amigo and The Layla Project
, although DeHaan also played far from the main characters in them.
In 2011, he received the leading role in the science-fiction thriller Chronicle, which received a positive response from viewers. After this film, DeHaan woke up famous. Roles in films with world celebrities such as Tom Hardy, Reese Witherspoon, Colin Firth, Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, Rose Byrne, and Daniel Radcliffe fell on him like a cornucopia. In 2014, he played a major role in the video[1] of the Imagine Dragons group for the song I Bet My Life.
On May 12, 2020, Luc Besson wrote on his Facebook page that he had invited Dane DeHaan to play the lead role in his upcoming film Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets[2].
Actor career
Dane first found himself under the gun of a dozen cameras at the age of 20, starring in one of the episodes of the popular TV series “Law and Order.” Afterwards, the guy briefly appeared in Zeke Zelker’s musical comedy “AKA: It’s a Wiley World!”

In 2008, Dane got a cameo role in the popular television series “Patients.” Despite the fact that his character was on the screen for a short period of time, the actor was noticed by many famous directors, and he also met such stars as Gabriel Byrne, Dianne Wiest and Michelle Forbes.
Dane DeHaan in the series "Patients"
Between 2008 and 2010, Dane played exclusively supporting roles. He could be found in the films “Risk Factor”, “Shadow from the Past”, “Amigo” and in the science fiction television series “True Blood”. At the end of the year, he got the main role in the short film “Project “Leila”. The guy had to transform into a young man who decided to kiss his best friend, and the awkward situation radically changed the girl’s life.
Real fame came to the aspiring actor with the release of the fantastic action movie “Chronicle”. The film was about three friends who discovered their superpowers immediately after a meteorite fell. Over time, they learned to move objects with their eyes, fly, and became incredibly strong. As often happens, power overshadowed common sense and one of the main characters (Alex Russell) went crazy. What will win – brute force or common sense – is what the audience had to find out. The movie turned out to be dynamic and interesting; it, and also Dane’s performance, was highly appreciated by both critics and television viewers.

In 2013, Dane starred in the melodrama Kill Your Darlings alongside Daniel Radcliffe and Ben Foster. The story of this film described the events that actually happened during the Second World War. DeHaan got one of the key characters - Lucien Carr, one of the founders of the beatnik philosophical movement. Having entered Columbia University according to the story, he met Jack Kerouac, and then their teacher William Burroughs. The friends have fun until secrets from Lucien's life come to light.
DeHaan, Radcliffe and Foster played beatnik friends
In September of the same year, the thriller “The Devil's Knot” was released, in which Dane played one of the main characters. The synopsis of the film is as follows: local authorities accuse teenagers of a triple murder, arguing that they love hard rock. A local lawyer comes to the aid of the young tomboys, trying to get to the bottom of the truth.

A month later, the guy got the main role in the half-fiction, half-documentary film “Metallica: Through the Impossible.” Having reincarnated as an assistant to the band Metallica, the hero had to deliver a package to the musical group, and on the way to his goal he would have to go through a lot of adventures.
Fun Fact: Dane DeHaan Was a Prada Advertiser
In April 2014, a new film about Spider-Man, The Amazing Spider-Man: High Voltage, was released, in which Dane played the villainous role of the Goblin. Spider-Man himself was played by young actor Andrew Garfield.
Spider-Man: Dane DeHaan as the Green Goblin
In 2020, DeHaan appeared in the lead role in the biographical drama Life. He had to reincarnate as the famous American actor James Dean, and on his behalf go through numerous failures on the road to success and recognition.
The best films with Dane DeHaan
During the Great Depression
Dane appeared on the “cinema firmament” only a few years ago - when the retro drama “The Drunkest County in the World” was released. DeHaan played a secondary role in the film, while the main roles went to Shia LaBeouf, Englishman Tom Hardy and Australian Jason Clarke - all three portrayed siblings, bootleggers. They are trying to survive by selling alcohol “underground”: the Great Depression reigns outside, and there is less and less hope for a happy tomorrow. In 2012, the film competed for the Palme d'Or at Cannes.
Son of a motorcycle racer
The action of another drama, “The Place Beyond the Pines,” takes place in two time periods. Stunt motorcycle racer Luke (Ryan Gosling) wants to earn money for his ex-lover (Eva Mendes) and his baby son. In desperation, he commits a robbery, but then dies. Years later, his son (Dane DeHaan) will penetrate the family secret and find out what really happened to Luke. Interestingly, Mendes and Gosling, who played former lovers, became a couple in real life (even before filming began), and they have a child.
Spielberg's long-suffering project
Steven Spielberg spent a very long time preparing for the filming of the biopic “Lincoln” (the rights to film the original novel were acquired 10 years before work on the film began). He tried to create an environment as close as possible to the era of the reign of this president, he spent a long time selecting antique props and even called the actors by the names of their characters during a break between filming. For more than five years, the role of Abraham Lincoln was assigned to Liam Neeson, but, tired of waiting, the artist refused to work. He was replaced by Daniel Day-Lewis, who received his third Academy Award for this role. In total, the film had 12 nominations (two were won - in addition to Day-Lewis, academicians noted the production designer). Surely it was a great honor for the aspiring artist to star with Spielberg, and even in such a notable project. True, DeHaan has a cameo role - a soldier, because the drama takes place during the Civil War.
Angel or demon?
But in the independent melodrama Kill Your Darlings, Dane’s character is very significant: it is with him, a handsome and capable university student, that the future founder of the beatnik movement, poet Ginsberg (Daniel Radcliffe), falls in love. Young and vulnerable, he was inspired by the image of the blond “angel” Lucien Carr. But Carr’s personality is very ambiguous. He killed his teacher (Michael C. Hall), citing the fact that the man was molesting him. Lucien got off very lightly, having competently built a defense, but who really was the villain and who was the victim was known only to the participants in this long-standing tragedy.
Let the concert take place!
Metallica fans certainly loved Nimrod Antal's highly rated musical film starring their idols. But some people called the movie “one big video,” and it failed at the box office. The main character of the film “Metallica: Through the Impossible” is a rock band technician, the guy Trip, who is responsible for the equipment for the concert. It was his adventures (and the performances of the musicians) that formed the basis of the film.
Torn between friendship and hatred
You can endlessly compare the two versions of the big screen adaptation of Spider-Man - both Sam Raimi's films and the reboot of the series have their pros and cons. But if in the first version Harry Osborn (James Franco) acts in all three parts of the franchise, then in the later film adaptation of the comic book, Peter Parker's friend (Dane DeHaan) appears only in the second film, The Amazing Spider-Man: High Voltage. The comic book film was very successful: almost $709 million in box office receipts. And this fact allows us to call the sequel to “The Amazing Spider-Man” the best film by Dane DeHaan. Moreover, he coped very well with the image of Harry (Green Goblin): on the one hand, an old friend, and on the other, an unexpected adversary of Spider-Man.
Personal life of Dane DeHaan
The first and so far only chosen one of the talented actor is his colleague Anna Wood. The lovers met in 2006, and in 2012 they officially became husband and wife. Dane DeHaan and Anna Wood: happy moments The girl managed to appear in episodes of the TV series “Detective Rush”, “Mad Men” and “The Careless”, and was also busy working on the film “Chronicle” with her husband.

In November 2020, the happy couple announced that they were expecting their first child. Before that, they only raised a dog named Franny.

At the beginning of 2020, three films starring Dane DeHaan were released in Russia.
The first is the psychological thriller A Cure for Wellness, in which Dane DeHaan plays the lead role. He fails to complete the task, but due to an accident he ends up in this sanatorium, where he is offered to try out an experimental treatment method.

The second is the melodrama “Tulip Fever,” a romantic film about a young artist who is hired to paint a portrait of the young aristocrat Sofia. In the course of his work, he falls in love with a girl and incurs the wrath of her husband. A whole galaxy of talented actors worked on the film: in addition to Dane DeHaan, the cast includes the names of Alicia Vikander, Christopher Waltz and even comedy star Zach Galifianakis.
Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne (“Valerian”)
In August 2020, Luc Besson’s science-fiction action film “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” starring DeHaan and Cara Delevingne was released. Their heroes are space special agents in the distant future, where natives of different planets live peacefully on one space station. The film is based on the French comic book series Valerian, published since 1967. Clive Owen, Ethan Hawke and Rihanna were also involved in the project.
