“From Odessa kitschman”: the famous singer is sure that God is not the only judge of the Ukrainian president
The day before, Elena Vaenga’s concert was sold out at the Pyramid. The organizers even put on sale entrance tickets without a seat - such is the popularity of the heroine of the Russian chanson. The BUSINESS Online correspondent, who attended the almost three-hour show, marveled at the number of musicians on stage, listened to the artist’s programmatic political speeches and once again became convinced of how far he is from the people.
"SMOKE" AND "ABSINTH"
Yesterday's performance by Elena Vaenga in Kazan once again confirmed that she is one of the most popular domestic singers. All tickets for the concert at the Pyramid were sold out; moreover, a few days before the show, so-called “entrance tickets” costing 1.5 thousand rubles went on sale, which allowed you to enter the event, but without a seat reserved for you. However, given the specifics of the hall, which has a bar, the lack of a chair did not become a big problem for such spectators; rather, on the contrary, it opened up prospects for an even more successful evening. They “drank” quite a lot at Vaenga’s concert, once again “amnestying” along this line recent film hits, like “Leviathan” or “Bitter!”, to which zealots of morality complained that, they say, they drink too much on the screen.
Of course, the ideology of Andrei Zvyagintsev’s is clearly not to the liking of the singer, who firmly stands on a statist position, and therefore her audience. But the “Russian world” of Zhora Kryzhovnikov’s “Gorko!”, which showed the viewer the real archetype of the “Russian wedding,” absolutely corresponded to the spirit that reigned at yesterday’s concert. And individual characters from the public could safely be included in the crowd of the next sequel of the film. By the way, the heroine of the evening herself is by no means against bad habits, take at least the names of her hits like “I Smoke” or “Absinthe.” And before the intermission, Vaenga admitted that if it weren’t for work, she would already be there (at the bar - author’s note ).
"I'M JUST A GIRL"
Of course, the singer, who, in her words, “became a star at the age of 34” because “everything is rewarded to the humble in due time,” is a special phenomenon on the domestic stage. Several years ago, the best Russian authors writing about popular music tried to explain the popularity of the heroes of Russian chanson - Stas Mikhailov , Vaenga and Grigory Leps , who suddenly, after a rather long career, turned from strictly niche musicians into major pop stars, literally forcing the main TV channels and radio stations surrender to the people's love for these artists. So, the analysis of music observers mainly boiled down to two points. Firstly, the mass audience, over the years of domination of the pop Olympus by various “singing cowards” and other production projects, has missed real sincerity, albeit one that evokes a wry smile from a refined intellectual. Secondly, this is a live sound, which the mentioned artists rely on; they do not allow themselves to talk to the audience using a muted microphone.
And all this is regardless of the quality of the musical product that is now produced by the highest paid Russian singers. By the way, the day before he left an extremely strange impression. They say that Vaenga recently allowed refugees from Donbass to live for free in her luxurious St. Petersburg apartment. Frankly speaking, her team also gives the impression of people to whom the singer, the owner of a kind and broad soul, gave shelter and work during this difficult period of crisis, including for musicians. The BUSINESS Online correspondent was unable to calculate exactly what the maximum number of people was on stage at the same time that evening. They left and came, changed instruments, all these wonderful guitarists, drummers, brass section, backing vocalists... At the same time, the “Gypsy camp named after Vaenga” performed quite tavern songs, interspersed with rock guitar solos, and even with something , vaguely reminiscent of ska and bossa nova. All this crazy eclecticism, a mixture of Parisian and Nizhny Novgorod, was complemented by the singer’s poetic exercises, the content of which, fortunately, was immediately forgotten, but brought wild delight to the audience. Vaenga absolutely sincerely shed tears with or without reason: “It’s not because I’m a tearful singer, I’m just a girl.” And she talked about the pies and pies that she was given before the Kazan concert and with which she was going to please her father in St. Petersburg.
“LET THEY JUST TRY...”
The relationship between the singer and the public is a different matter. It wasn't just flowers here. For example, an elderly man gave Vaenga a thick notebook, apparently with his own poems, and one lady presented the heroine of the evening with CDs with songs... by Elena Vaenga. The embarrassed singer admitted to the donor that she already had them, and as a result, the discs were returned back, but with an autograph. A truly folk singer gathered an astonishing number of freak-like audiences, which would be the envy of any other rock concert: there was a lady in a ski cap, and a sickly-looking young man with a tattoo on his neck, who knew the lyrics of all the songs by heart; in the audience you could even see a Muslim grandmother in scarf. Vaenga talked a lot with the people, told stories, but, no matter how much she restrained herself, she still could not resist publicly expressing her opinion on current political events. Regarding the fact that after such words she might not be allowed into Ukraine, the artist expressed herself clearly: “Let them just try...” And then she remembered that, according to scientific research, eating chocolate makes a person kinder. But for one person, according to Vaenga, this rule does not work, or he does not use his own products. There was no need to explain to the politically savvy public that we were talking about the “chocolate king” and the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko . “God is his judge, and not only God,” the singer added somewhat threateningly (but, apparently, this was still her assessment of what was happening, and not the leaking of the plans of the Russian General Staff). And it also went to the NTV channel, which “takes us for fools.”
Then Vaenga performed “Chopin” - her “teariest song.” A landmark composition, in fact, which, thanks to its performance on the “Voice” show, actually legitimized the artist’s presence in that musical field where it is customary to snort at the phrase “Russian chanson”. The audience was happy, some were sitting on the steps, drinking a martini, some preferred to take off their shoes and feel at home, next to the bar a certain lady was desperately proving to the gentleman that the singer Vaenga was much better than Kristina Orbakaite . Having heard the first chords of “Two urkans ran from the Odessa kichman,” the BUSINESS Online correspondent decided that that was enough for today and did not wait for an encore. And on the way out of the hall, I thought that all the attempts of the Russian intelligentsia to “go among the people” were by no means accidental and would end in an unconditional fiasco. In the wardrobe, Joe Dassin sang about the Champs Elysees, and that made things a little easier.
