Soviet actress Varvara Popova: life and work

Biography

Alexander was born in the city of Komsomolsk, but soon his family moved to the capital of Ukraine. As a child, Sasha was a very athletic boy. He was seriously involved in football and was also fond of extreme sports.

“I wanted to be a football player. It is clear that almost all boys want to be football players, but I also played well. Options for my future career were even considered - to start it at the CSKA sports boarding school or Dynamo Kyiv. Several injuries changed everything dramatically. After them it was impossible to give a strong load. I gradually switched to KVN and drama clubs and realized that football was not really my thing, I had to go to the theater. Fortunately, I was supported at home. My mother performed in amateur performances all her life, my sister studied at the Variety and Circus College. In general, they decided: the fact that I’m going to be an actor isn’t the worst thing,” the artist recalls.

Chekhov in the life of an actor

In addition to Shakespeare's heroes, Chekhov's characters were also close to him. Director Leonid Kheifets invited the actor to play Chekhov himself in his film “Ionych”; the entire film crew went to Melikhovo to the house-museum of the great writer. Andrei Popov, wearing Anton Pavlovich's makeup, went to the museum with the director. All the museum employees came running to look at the actor and were so amazed by the resemblance to the writer that the director of the museum gave him the main relic of the museum - the pince-nez and cap of Anton Pavlovich Chekhov.

Having touched the things of one of the great Russian writers, Andrei Alekseevich could not play. Everything inside instantly died, and he asked to replace Chekhov’s things with fake ones. When they did this, he calmed down and played with detachment.

Cinema

Alexander Popov’s film career began in 2007 with small roles in the TV series “Stepfather”, “Ex-girlfriend” and “You Can’t Command Your Heart”. Then he starred in the melodrama “Family People”, the family saga “Prodigal Children” and several episodes of the detective story “The Return of Mukhtar”.

"Two Sides of the Same Anna"

The actor’s first major work came in the women’s drama “Two Sides of the Same Anna.”

Plot: Anna Shelyagina (Olga Pavlovets) lives in a southern port city. She is studying to become an economist, but in her heart she dreams of becoming an actress. In the meantime, the girl works part-time as a nurse for Valentina Ivanovna Pogrebinskaya (Lyudmila Chursina), a rich and influential widow of a banker. Anya’s life collapses when her brother Sergei is hit by the son of a local millionaire (Emmanuil Vitorgan) Viktor Danilov (Anton Feoktistov) in a cool car. The tragedy occurs before the eyes of Anna and her mother. Using his influence and money, the businessman “so it coincided that my character from “Two Sides of the Same Anna” and I are namesakes. His name is also Alexander. This is the youngest son of millionaire Vladimir Danilov. He is very different from his two older brothers. He is a kind, sincere and romantic guy. He is not interested in all these intrigues associated with the family business. Therefore, he spends almost all his free time in the library - he is very passionate about books. But under the influence of his older brother, he begins to change and becomes the same scoundrel as Victor.”

Then the artist participated in the romantic film “The True Story of Scarlet Sails”, in the popular series “Euphrosyne”, in the melodrama “Hello, Mom!”, in the detective film “Gunpowder and Shot”, in the historical and biographical film “The Passion of Chapai”, in the action movie “White Wolves”, in the multi-part film “Female Doctor-2”.

Alexander became widely known for his leading roles in the detective television series "OSA" (programmer Vasily Sobakin), in the melodrama "You'll Be Mine Anyway" (Nikita Arefiev) and the serial film "Mongrel Lyalya" (Sergei Ivanovich Sviridov).

"You'll still be mine"

The actor explained the essence of the main storyline of the romantic love story: “Most often, girls fall in love with “bad guys,” but sometimes it’s worth looking at the kind and shy ones. “You'll Still Be Mine” is the story of a girl who falls in love with an unworthy guy. At the same time, this is a story about the path of a person moving towards his goal. It happens that on the route to a dream we do not pay attention to the opinions of our loved ones, we do not notice a lot of things. And only when the goal has already been achieved do we decide to look around and realize that perhaps it was not worth such effort, time, and sacrifices.” Alexander Popov about his character: “I am absolutely not like him. “You’ll Still Be Mine” is the first project in which I played a scumbag. Before that, my characters were the complete opposite of Nikita, and it was my hero who was chosen by the main characters in the end. And here I was entrusted with playing the antagonist, apparently, director Alexander Timenko saw through my “negative charm.” But I didn't treat my character as a bad guy. Nikita simply follows the lead, his friends use him, and he is led by their provocations. In addition, his mother is a greedy woman who also influences him. And even when he actually falls in love, in the eyes of his friends, my hero cannot look like a guy in love, he must be macho. He makes mistakes that lead him to unhappiness and the loss of a loved one. Nikita is still a boy who is always competing with his classmates, he wants to be cooler, taller, stronger, faster, but at the same time he does not know how to make decisions at all. This leads him into a difficult situation. But overall he’s not as bad as people think he is, he just has a weak character.”

Popov can also be seen in the popular TV series “While the Village Sleeps,” the mystical film “The Witch,” the women’s story “When the Past is Ahead,” and the melodramas “The Mistress” and “I’m with You.”

"Mistress"

The role of Alexander in “The Mistress” caused a real stir. “I can’t say that I woke up famous after this project. However, it is for sure that it was after him that I began to be recognized on the street more often. The release that I had been waiting for for many years was given not by the 100-episode film, but by the 24-episode “Mistress.” And if I had to choose between the characters of Alexander (Sergei Radchenko) - a 100% hero, and my Kirill, the eminence grise, without hesitation, I would choose the latter. Negative roles are more interesting, and viewers remember them better - if, of course, they are played successfully,” the actor admits.

"I'm with you"

“My character's name is Roman. In his youth, he listened to his father and made the wrong choice. And now, several years later, he wants to correct the mistakes of his past. According to the story, while still a teenager, he and his friend Alexey fell in love with the same girl, Tanya. Life took them to different cities and countries. Great prospects opened up for Roman: studying at one of the London universities, a prestigious profession. But when it turns out that Tanya is seriously ill, both guys, despite a long-standing conflict and a sense of rivalry, unite to save her. My hero is courageous and strong. He is ready to fight for what he believes in,” says Alexander.

In the film “I'm with You,” Popov's hero has to fight to save his beloved girl and dive into an icy plunge pool. And these were not the most serious tests: “My Roman practices mixed martial arts. And in my life I probably danced more in college than I fought in the ring, so this is unusual for me. It was necessary to be completely immersed in the process, and it required a lot of energy: 2 workouts a day for a month and a half, a special diet... You can’t be ready for this, but I certainly feel a little more confident. And in general, I fell in love with mixed martial arts. Previously, I only watched boxing from sports programs on TV, but now I’ve switched to UFS - it’s much more interesting to me.”

“I am inclined to believe that in any movie in which I take part, in any hero I am cast as, you can find something close to you. Therefore, I am interested in both Kirill from “The Mistress”, such a “gray cardinal”, and Roman from “I’m with you” - an absolute hero, a real man, capable of doing great things, in a broad sense, in the end of this film, and not a boy, who studies at the institute,” notes the artist.

"Captain"

The actor's filmography includes about forty films. One of the latest premieres in which Alexander Popov starred is the series “Captain” directed by Vladimir Yanoshchuk.

The plot centers on the life of a girl, Alexandra (Anna Mikhailovskaya), who has had to endure many difficult trials. Her parents die in a car accident, and guardianship over her is taken over by her closest relatives from the village - her uncle Nikolai (Leonid Gromov) and his wife Katerina (Margarita Shubina), who hope to get rich from the inheritance of their orphaned niece...

Personal life of celebrities.

Alexander Popov is a true legend of Soviet sports. He was born in the Urals into an unusual family: his parents were employees of a secret enterprise and they lived in the closed city of Sverdlovsk-45 (now Lesnoy), which at that time was called “mailboxes.”

One day, in order to strengthen and maintain the health of their son, his parents decided to take him swimming. They had no goal of making him an athlete, and it never occurred to Alexander himself. However, coach Galina Vitman managed to reveal the guy’s potential, and he himself began to become seriously interested in this sport.

Due to swimming, Sasha had less and less time to study, so his academic performance began to drop sharply. The parents began to worry and the father suggested that his son give up sports, but he replied that it was too late.

After school, Alexander studied at the university in Volgograd, where he continued his training. His tenacity, perseverance and hard work were not long in coming: his sports biography began in 1991. It was this year that the athlete took part in the European Championship for the first time. He managed to win as many as four gold medals. After this, a whole series of victories followed in the sports life of Alexander Popov.

In 1993, Alexander moved to Australia permanently. And after the Olympic Games, which took place in Barcelona, his coach Gennady Turetsky began working here.

In 1994, Alexander experienced new success: he set a new world record and became a two-time winner of the Rome World Championship. In 1996, the athlete gained worldwide fame.

In the summer of 1996, when Alexander visited Moscow, he became the victim of a street clash and received a serious knife wound that was life-threatening. Who knows how it would have ended, but Moscow surgeon Avtandil Manvelidze performed a real miracle and performed a unique operation of its kind, which saved the athlete’s life. The very next year he returned to the sport and began to win victories again.

In 2005, Alexander Popov stopped participating in sports competitions. He devotes all his free time to his family: his wife and three children. His wife Daria Shmeleva is also an athlete and swims. The family has two sons (Vladimir and Anton) and a daughter, Mia, whose birth the couple simply could not get enough of. You may also be interested in the article Natalya Gundareva: personal life

Leading

Popov hosts the morning broadcast of the Breakfast program. Weekend" on one of the popular Ukrainian channels. This experience is very useful for an artist, as it is very different from acting.

As Alexander himself says, it was much more difficult for him to get used to the television studio than to the film set. The main problem is the need to look at the camera, whereas in the cinema he was weaned from this for years: “Fear of looking at the camera. I'm not used to looking at it. Because we were taught for four years at the theater institute not to look at it. And for my practice in cinema they always said: “Ay-ay, you can’t look at the camera.” But here it’s the other way around – you need to change your worldview and turn there, to these 7-8 million viewers. This is very unusual and difficult for an actor, a different world...

When I was called to audition, I thought “ok, I’ll give it a try.” But when I was approved, I began to remember what I loved for myself. Because I wanted to bring something of my own to the morning show so that others would like me too. Naturally, I remembered “While everyone is at home.” This is communication with people, it is very simple, homely, it is morning, and it is pleasant to watch. I remember how my mother always turned it on.”

Interview

About the profession:

“...my first and most important profession is an actor. I'm not going anywhere from this. I want to return to the theater and continue acting in films... It seems to me that every actor has an inherent desire to come up with something new and cool.”

“It’s easy to maneuver, because this is life, I don’t treat it like work. After college, I worked for four years at the theater on Lipki and never said that I was going to work, I said: “I’m going to the theater!” This is life, and when you live this, you don’t have to look for time, you don’t get tired. When you live like an office plankton, and it doesn’t give you any pleasure, you need to change your life, you can’t do this for long.”

“I will try to be my true self so as not to deceive our viewers.”

About television:

“Television is again a new experience and a new stress for the body, I think it’s impossible to live without it.”

“Television is just one take. I'm very worried. Every time I think about going live, I start shaking. I remember everything I have to say.”

About sports and dogs:

“I try to force myself to go to the gym... Exercising helps not only stay in shape, but also be more resilient. At the very least, I force myself to run. Plus the dog does not allow you to relax. If our Benjamin is not taken for a walk, everything at home will be destroyed. From birth he was active and mischievous. Because of him, we even had to do renovations in the apartment: he managed to chew out the linoleum! And he tore off the baseboards once or twice.”

About women:

“Externally, I like Jennifer Aniston and Lucy Liu. As for personal qualities, I like smart, kind, devoted women.”
