The actor and director shocked a 12-year-old girl with a 28 cm length
The black-and-white chronicle shows a gray-haired Charles Spencer Chaplin next to his beautiful wife, surrounded by eight children. The “little tramp” had the chance to land in a quiet family harbor only in his declining years. And in my youth... Oh, what happened in my youth, it is better for the champions of decency not to know. In this regard, the genius of world cinema could have been under investigation more than once. April 16 marks the 130th anniversary of the birth of the great artist and sophisticated lover, whose outstanding masculinity was legendary.

Charlie complained that whenever someone showed too much attention to him, Edna would disappear, and the actor would be told that she felt ill and asked to come to her.
In the end, the young lady married someone else. At the same time, she continued to act with Chaplin, and he paid her a salary every week until her death in 1958.
The love of a sad clown: Charlie Chaplin and his women...
April 16 is Charlie Chaplin's birthday.
Charlie Chaplin had two passions from his youth - cinema and women. Both of these made him famous.
Charlie Chaplin was born in England and grew up in abject poverty. As a street performer, Charlie got married for the first time. In his autobiography, the artist did not even mention that marriage, as if it never happened. Well, of course, he was sixteen then, and his wife was even younger! They separated quite quickly, but Chaplin kept the son born from this marriage. He also did not write about where and with whom his first child was when Chaplin first came on tour to the USA with the Carnot troupe. The only thing that may indicate that he took the child with him is Charlie’s habit of always living separately from the troupe’s artists. But perhaps this is only evidence of his love of solitude.
Englishwoman Hetty Kelly was the first and only girl who refused Chaplin. He met 14-year-old Hetty in London; he was 19 years old at the time. Hattie Kelly was a little ballerina with huge brown eyes, a graceful figure and childishly puffy lips, the most agile and funny girl from the Yankee Dudds Girls musical show. Three mornings in a row he met her at the house and, taking her hand, walked her to the metro. On the fourth day the romance ended. Chaplin, as usual, was waiting for Hetty at the gate, but this time she was cold and did not even shake hands. He began to jokingly reproach the girl for not loving him at all; Hetty snapped: “You are asking too much. After all, I am only fifteen years old, and you are four years older than me.” Stunned, Chaplin suddenly decided: “Would you agree to marry me?” - and received a negative answer. Then, repenting of his haste and persistence, he once again came to Hetty’s house in the hope of saving something. But the reception was short and cold. This first failed love left a mark on his soul for a long time. Hattie Kelly later married; she died in 1918 during the Spanish flu epidemic. Chaplin only learned about this in 1921 from her brother Arthur, whom he met by chance on a train.
Peggy Pearce (June 4, 1894 – February 26, 1975). Comedy films starring Chaplin were successful. Work fascinated him too much to think about a new family. During the filming of His Favorite Pastime, Charlie became romantically involved with actress Peggy Pierce. “I was then, in 1914, barely twenty-five years old, I was in the prime of my youth, in love with my work, and not only because it brought me success. It had a special charm: the opportunity to meet all the famous movie stars... And then an amazingly beautiful girl, Peggy Pierce, with an elegantly contoured face, a beautiful white neck and a charming figure, made my heart flutter.
She appeared only in the third week of my stay at the Keystone studio... On Sundays I went to visit her, she lived with her parents. Each of our meetings was full of declarations of love, and each of our meetings was full of struggle. Yes, Peggy loved me, but I couldn't achieve anything. She was firm and eventually I gave up and retreated. I had no intention of getting married then. I valued too much freedom, which promised me extraordinary adventures. No woman could compare with that vague image that lived in my soul.” Peggy Pierce married Arthur Klein and they had one child. During the period 1913 - 1920. starred in 67 films.
Edna Purviance (October 21, 1895 – January 11, 1958).
Edna was one of Chaplin's favorite muses. He directed her in 33 (!) films.
Edna Purviance and Chaplin met in 1915 in Los Angeles while filming the film All Night Long for Essenay Studios. In 1915, Charlie Chaplin was filming his second film in the town of Niles, southeast of San Francisco, and for a long time could not find an actress for one of the female roles. One of his colleagues accidentally noticed Edna at Tate's Café and, deciding that she would be suitable for this role, introduced her to Chaplin. Without thinking twice, he took Purviance into his film, although he considered her quite serious for comedic roles.
They began an affair that lasted three years. “In 1916, she and I were inseparable,” Charlie recalls, “we went together to Red Cross evenings, to all the balls and receptions. It happened that Edna was jealous of me. She expressed her jealousy in a rather subtle and insidious way. As soon as someone showed me too obvious attention, Edna immediately disappeared, and I was immediately informed that she felt ill and was asking me to come to her. Of course, I ran as fast as I could and sat next to her for the rest of the evening.”
On screen, Edna Purviance always played Charlie Chaplin's fiancée, but in life she remained a beloved and loving woman. Both actors were not completely sure of their relationship: Charlie wanted to marry Edna, but put off the proposal “for later”; as a result, they separated three years later. She eventually fell in love with another actor, Tommy Meighan, who worked at Paramount. Until 1923, Edna Purviance starred in 33 films by Charlie Chaplin. In 1938, Edna Purviance married Pan-American Airlines pilot John P. Squier. Their marriage lasted seven years, until 1945, when John Squier died. After 20 years, Edna returned to cinema and again to Chaplin, for whom she starred in episodic roles in the films Monsieur Verdoux (1947) and Footlights (1952). They remained good friends until the end of their lives. Chaplin considered her not only a friend, but also his employee and paid her a weekly salary of $350 until her death in 1958 from cancer.
Mildred Harris (November 29, 1901 – July 20, 1944) was Chaplin's first wife. Chaplin met Mildred Harris in the fall of 1917, when Sam Godwin invited him to his villa. At the evening she was with a certain Mr. Ham, but she was in love with Eliot Dexter and flirted with him. She was very sweet, very stupid, but she had an iron grip. She was sixteen. Some sources indicate the age of 14 years. Chaplin himself writes evasively that “she was not yet nineteen.” Mildred was known for appearing nude in a movie at the age of 10. Mildred turned out to be a real hunter. She called, made appointments, was charming and compliant. A few weeks later she told Chaplin about her pregnancy. The pregnancy later turned out to be false.
The wedding took place on October 23, 1918. Chaplin was 29 years old. The wedding ceremony was “terrifyingly simple and businesslike.” He even forgot to kiss the newlywed. On July 7, 1919, their son, Norman Spencer Chaplin, was born. The child lived only three days. For several years after the tragedy, the couple tried to maintain their relationship, but Mildred Harris's bad character and outright stupidity irritated the actor terribly.
After living together for several years, they decided to separate - without fanfare. To avoid complications, Mildred had to file for divorce, accusing her husband of callousness. She promised, but again acted in her own way: declaring in court that Chaplin had abandoned her, she accused him not of mental callousness, but of mental cruelty, which for the jury was by no means the same thing, and, counting on a scandal, brought media attention to the divorce process. It didn’t work out quietly and peacefully.
According to local laws, Mildred was entitled to 25 thousand dollars, Charlie offered her 100, but on the condition that she never make any claims against him again. Money decided everything, he gained freedom...
Lita Gray (April 15, 1908 - December 29, 1995) was Chaplin's second wife. The girl's name was Lilitt McMurray. She entered cinema history under the pseudonym Lita Gray, playing the main role in “Gold Rush.” When she met Chaplin, she was not yet sixteen. Schoolgirl McMurray worked in the evenings in her father's candy store, not far from the film studio. In the film "Baby" she played Playful Angel - a charming baby with long legs. A unique case: all the actresses in Chaplin’s films, as a rule, were already his mistresses. Inspired by the victory, Charlie signed a contract with McMurray to star in Gold Rush.
The romance was stormy and passionate - until it was discovered that Lilitta was pregnant. Chaplin insisted on an abortion, promising 20 thousand as compensation. But the McMurray family had other plans. Relatives, accompanied by lawyers, showed up to Chaplin right in the midst of filming, showed a collection of photographs (they clearly indicated that he had seduced the minor Lilita), threatened the molester with a fine of 10 million dollars and 20 years in prison and offered a deal: marriage in exchange for silence.
The wedding took place on November 26, 1924, at that time Lita was only 16 years old. In this regard, in order to avoid problems with the laws of the United States of America, Chaplin married Lita Gray outside the United States - in Mexico. They had two sons: Charles Chaplin (Jr.) (1925–1968) and Sidney Earl Chaplin (1926–2009). The relationship with Lita Gray became the most difficult and unbearable in the life of Charlie Chaplin. Even several decades later, in “My Biography,” Chaplin did not find anything for Lilita except general words: “I will not touch on the details of this marriage - we have two adult sons, whom I love very much. My wife and I lived for two years, trying to start a family, but nothing worked out; both were left with only a feeling of bitterness.”
They divorced in 1928 during the filming of The Circus. From their divorce, Lita Gray created a large-scale scandal, which was actively discussed by the public and the press. The girl did not want simple compensation and alimony, she dreamed of suing the actor for everything - money, shares, studio, rights to the just released “Gold Rush”. As a result, the actress received $800 thousand: $600 thousand for herself and one hundred thousand for each of the born sons who remained with her - a record amount for that time, which led to an investigation by the tax authorities. And Chaplin ended up in a clinic for nervous diseases for some time. Chaplin biographer Joyce Milton wrote that the relationship between Chaplin and Lita Gray became the basis of Nabokov's novel Lolita. After breaking up with Chaplin, Lita Gray starred in only three more films, and before ending her acting career in 1947, she toured for some time in the USA and Europe with one of the theater companies. In the 1970s and 1980s, Gray worked as a clerk at a department store in Beverly Hills. Lita Gray wrote a book about her marriage, “My Life with Chaplin. Intimate memories." She also took part in the filming of the documentary "The Unknown Chaplin", which was shown in 1983. Lita Gray died on December 29, 1995 of cancer in Los Angeles.
Paulett Goddard (June 3, 1910 - April 23, 1990) was Chaplin's third wife. Actress Paulette Goddard and Chaplin had a close relationship from 1932 to 1940. Paulette met him on Schenck's yacht. By that time, 43-year-old Chaplin was already known as a silent film legend. They were united by loneliness. “She had recently arrived from New York and didn’t know anyone in Hollywood yet. For both of us, this meeting was like Robinson Crusoe meeting Friday,” Chaplin wrote. They took long car rides, traveled on a yacht, went to races and picnics. She starred in the films “Modern Times” and “The Great Dictator”.
The wedding ceremony took place in 1936 without pomp, on a yacht on the high seas, during a joint trip to the East (along the route Honolulu - Tokyo - Hong Kong). Charles tried not to advertise their marriage, but Paulette resolved the issue radically. Immediately after the wedding, she moved to Chaplin’s house, made friends with his sons, who, it must be said, simply adored her, and received guests as a hostess. After a stormy story with Lita Gray, Chaplin wanted to forget himself in a quiet and calm relationship, which he ended up with Paulette Goddard.
In 1940, Charlie Chaplin directed Paulette in the fatal film The Great Dictator, which satirized Hitler. The American government at that time did not want to spoil relations with Nazi Germany, so after the release of the film, Charlie Chaplin began to be checked: the intelligence services collected documents confirming his anti-American activities. Paulette Goddard was supposed to play Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind, but she was turned down due to her husband's disgraced status.
After the completion of filming “The Great Dictator,” Charlie and Paulette realized that their marriage had exhausted itself, the girl took her things and peacefully left the actor’s house. At the end of her life, Paulette also moved to Switzerland. Her husband was the writer Erich Maria Remarque. The last time Paulette and Charlie met was in 1971, when, after much persuasion, the 82-year-old patriarch came to America to receive an honorary Oscar. She died in 1990 in Switzerland in the municipality of Ronco sopra Ascona from emphysema on the eve of her 80th birthday.
Joan Barry (November 5, 1903 - April 10, 1989) After a quiet and serene life with Paulette Goddard, Joan Barry happened to Charlie Chaplin. The actor met the young actress during a trip to New York and wrote the script for his new melodrama just for her. He liked her spontaneity and Joan's ability to always say what she thought. But after signing the contract, the girl completely changed: she became cheeky, shouted at the director and interfered in his life.
It is still unknown whether Charlie Chaplin was in a relationship with Joan Berry, but the famous English historian and biographer Peter Ackroyd is sure of it: he writes about his affair with Joan in his new book about Chaplin. Ackroyd says that one day the actress arrived drunk at the director's mansion in Beverly Hills, broke the windows in his house, waited until dawn, took off her stockings and shoes and snuck into the actor's bedroom. There she pointed a gun at 52-year-old Chaplin and said she was going to commit suicide. After several hours of conversations, he convinced the actress not to do this, but subsequently she came to his house several times with a gun and threatened to kill herself.
Then the actor persuaded the doctor to accuse her of vagrancy, but this did not help: after a while she came to his house with the news of her pregnancy. In 1943, a paternity trial took place, but Charlie Chaplin was sure that this was not his child, so he took a test. The analysis showed that his guesses were correct, but the court declared the test unreliable and ordered the actor to pay child support to Joan's child until he comes of age. There is an opinion that Joan Berry was sent to Chaplin by Nazi groups after the release of the film “The Great Dictator”.
Oona O'Neill (May 13, 1925 - September 27, 1991) was Chaplin's fourth wife. Charlie Chaplin met the love of his life, as always, on the set. He directed the film “Ghost and Reality” and was looking for an actress for the main role. He was introduced to the daughter of the famous playwright Eugene O'Neill - Una O'Neill. “I was captivated by her radiant charm and some special, inherent charm... The more I got to know Una, the more I was amazed by her sense of humor and tolerance - she always had great respect for other people’s opinions. I loved her for this and for much more,” the comedian recalled.
Chaplin's age difference with his last wife was 36 years. Even though the whole world seemed to be turning against them, 54-year-old Charlie and 18-year-old Una got married. Their marriage was registered on June 16, 1943 in Carpinteria, a small village near Santa Barbara. They honeymooned in Santa Barbara. The actor then admits that it was the happiest month of his life. After marriage, Una said that she was not going to become an actress, but wanted to devote herself entirely to her family. After her marriage to Chaplin, Una's father stopped all contact with her.
She gave the director three sons - Christopher, Eugene and Michael, as well as five daughters - Josephine, Joanna, Victoria, Anna-Emile and Geraldine, who followed in her father's footsteps and starred in Karl Lagerfeld's film as Coco Chanel. By the time of the release of the last film, Monsieur Verdoux, the American public had fallen out of love with Charlie Chaplin. The actor and director decided to leave the film industry and moved with his family from the USA to the quiet Swiss town of Vevey. It was there, at the age of 72, that Chaplin’s last child was born. And it was in Switzerland that he finally found peace with the woman he loved, surrounded by children.
In 1952, before leaving the United States, Chaplin gave Una a power of attorney to manage his bank account. After Chaplin was blocked from entering the United States, Oona removed Chaplin's property from the United States. She later renounced her US citizenship. The last lines in Chaplin’s book “My Biography” are dedicated to Una: “Even when she simply, with amazing dignity, walks ahead of me along the narrow sidewalk of Vevey and I look at her graceful, slender figure, at her smoothly combed dark hair, in which several silver ones are already glistening. threads, a wave of love and happiness suddenly flows to my heart because she is who she is, and tears come to my eyes.” In March 1975, Chaplin was knighted and his wife became Lady Oona Chaplin. He died on Christmas night 1977 at his estate on the lake, where the whole family had gathered to celebrate the holiday, and 14 years later Una was buried next to Chaplina in the Corsier-sur-Vevey cemetery. Una and Charlie lived together for 34 years.
Mildred Harris
Mildred Harris
First wife. Actress, 14 years old. They signed after Mildred lied about being pregnant. A year later, the couple had a son, Norman Spencer Chaplin , but he lived only three days. Mildred accused Charlie of abuse and sexual sadism, and he accused her of lesbian affairs.
During the divorce, the actor paid $100 thousand in compensation. He said of Harris: “Mildred was not evil, but she was hopelessly zoological. I could never get to her soul - it was filled with some kind of pink rags and all sorts of nonsense.”
Una's training and work
After graduating from the Theater Academy, Una played many brilliant roles, and now she will take part in the filming of all four parts of the Avatar franchise, which will be released in 2020.
In addition, Una acts as a model for famous magazines.
The secrets of Una’s personal life are kept under seven seals, since there is no information about her novels in the media.
Even though they never dated or spent time together, there is no doubt that Charlie would be proud of his granddaughter's career.
Lillitha McMurray (Lita Gray)
Lillita gave birth to her husband two sons - Charles and Sidney,
the second wife. Actress, 12 years old. In Chaplin's film "Baby" Lita played a flirtatious angel. The director invited the child to take a steam bath together. “Charlie was covering my neck with quick, light kisses. I frantically pressed him to me, then I felt a sharp piercing pain inside and screamed. I must assume I became a woman. I was not yet 13 years old,” Lita Gray , reporting, among other things, about the outstanding dignity of the king of the screen, which reached 28 cm. The girl became pregnant. To avoid scandal, 36-year-old Charlie agreed to the marriage. He was imprisoned secretly in Mexico. Later, Lita accused her husband of cruelty and said that during the two years of their relationship he had five mistresses, he threatened her with a gun, offered to have group sex and publicly make love. During the divorce, Gray grabbed $825 thousand. After which the actor ended up in a mental hospital. Biographers assure that their story with Lita formed the basis of Nabokov’s “Lolita.” With his young mistress, Charlie made almost the same tour of the United States as Humbert and Lolita, and even stayed in the same hotels.
Thursday, April 16 marked the 131st anniversary of the birth of the legendary comedian Charlie Chaplin. He was not only a great artist, but also a great lover of the fair sex. The cinema legend’s marriages often ended in scandals, but there was also quiet family happiness in his life. LeMonade decided to talk about the iconic women in the life of Charlie Chaplin.
Hetty Kelly . This was Charlie Chaplin's first love and a rapidly short romance. At the time when he met the slender and graceful Hetty with huge brown eyes in London (Great Britain), he was 19, she was 15. The young beauty was a ballerina, and performed with the Yankee Doodles Girls in the music hall along with Chaplin’s troupe "Eight Lancashire Lads" There they met behind the scenes. Chaplin fell madly in love. He accompanied the girl to school, and from there to the dance class.
Camberwell Road now seemed like a magical street to me because Hetty Kelly lived there,” said Chaplin.
On the eleventh day of the relationship, he asked Hetty to marry him, but she got scared, and the couple broke up. According to Chaplin himself, he and the girl managed to meet only 5 times, spent no more than 20 minutes together, excluding the first, this acquaintance left a mark on the soul of the great comedian for a long time. Until the end of his life, he remembered the girl, and even the smell of the “Sunshine” soap with which she washed her face.

Edna Purviance. Chaplin met her when he was already working as a director and was looking for an actress for the main role in the film “All Night Long.” The only thing is that when we first met, he doubted whether Purviance could play a comedy, because she was serious and self-absorbed. Then Chaplin found out that the reason was unhappy love. Their romance lasted three years. Charlie wanted to propose to Edna, but kept putting it off. The idyll collapsed due to a scandal with starlet Mildred Harris and her imaginary pregnancy. However, Edna and Charlie remained friends. Until 1923, Purviance starred in 34 Chaplin films, including the famous “The Tramp.”
She could win the bet, prove that she was right, but she generously sacrificed her triumph for the sake of a good joke.
Chaplin never married his muse.
Photo: cyranoink.deviantart.com Mildred Harris. She became the first wife of the great comedian. Chaplin was then 29 years old, Harris was 16. It was not a love marriage - after walks and dates, Mildred announced that she was pregnant. However, the pregnancy, as it later turned out, turned out to be false. Later, Harris gave birth to Chaplin's son, but he lived only three days.
Their marriage, which began in October 1918, lasted until 1921. Like marriage, divorce was marked by scandal. At the trials, the former spouses accused each other of all serious things. Harris called her ex-husband a sexual sadist and alleged abuse; he also accused Mildred of having promiscuous relationships, including a lesbian relationship with actress Alla Nazimova. The actress’s lawyers tried to seize the film “Baby” recently shot by Chaplin, and he had to transport about 140 thousand meters of film to another state. The film was eventually mounted in a hotel room in Salt Lake City. Charlie Chaplin got rid of his ex-wife with money, setting the condition that she disappear from his life.

The couple had to get married in Mexico due to the age of the bride. Gray gave birth to two sons: Charles Chaplin Jr. and Sidney Earl Gray.
The divorce from Lita, as well as from Mildred, culminated in a scandal that was discussed by the press and the public. Gray wanted to take away absolutely everything from Chaplin, and not only money, but also the studio, the rights to “The Gold Rush,” which was released. As a result, the actress received 700 (according to other sources - 800) thousand dollars in compensation - a record amount for those times, which became the reason for an investigation by the tax authorities. It is believed that it was the relationship between Chaplin and Gray that formed the basis of Nabokov’s novel “Lolita”.
I will not touch on the details of this marriage - we have two adult sons, whom I love very much. My wife and I lived for two years, trying to start a family, but nothing worked out,” Charlie said then.

She starred in his “New Times,” after the premiere of which the couple got married. Paulette moved into the house of the great comedian, became friends with his sons and became the real mistress of the mansion. Famous writers and musicians, as well as Albert Einstein, visited the couple’s house.
It is noteworthy that due to her marriage to the scandalous Chaplin, Goddard at the last moment lost the role of Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind. Although her audition was excellent, Vivien Leigh was approved at the last moment. And at the premiere of the legendary and fatal film “The Great Dictator” in 1940, Chaplin for the first time out loud called Paulette his wife. But then the marriage was already falling apart, the couple had been quarreling for the last three years. The divorce took place without scandals or accusations.
We were connected with Paulette by loneliness... For both of us, this meeting was like Robinson Crusoe meeting Friday,” Charlie Chaplin once frankly admitted.
Charlie spent 8 years with Paulette.

Charlie Chaplin met her in his usual style when he was looking for an actress for the film “Ghost and Reality.” Then the girl was 18, the age difference between them was 36 years. They did not believe in their marriage; the bride's father vehemently did not want this union. But the couple's marital happiness lasted 35 years. Una gave the great actor and director three sons and five daughters. Their eldest daughter Geraldine very successfully followed in her father’s footsteps; the actress’s biography includes almost 140 films. So, in 2013, 69-year-old Geraldine starred as Coco Chanel in a short film by Karl Lagerfeld called “The Return.” A year earlier, the actress and her father’s daughter became a guest of the third Odessa International Festival.
The more I got to know Una, the more I was amazed by her sense of humor and tolerance - she always respected other people’s opinions,” said the comedian.

THE GREAT MUTE
- April 16, 1889 Born in London in the family of variety actors Charles Spencer Chaplin Sr. and Hannah Chaplin . My paternal grandmother had gypsy roots, which the artist was very proud of. His father, a reveler and drunkard, died at 37. The family lived in poverty - Charlie and his older brother Sidney took turns running in their mother's shoes for free stew.
- 1894. First appearance on stage. At the age of five, he replaced his mother, whose voice had disappeared, in the music hall program. The audience showered the boy with coins; he collected them amid applause and continued singing. Soon the mother lost her mind and ended up in a psychiatric hospital. Her sons were homeless, then they were taken to an orphanage.
- 1898. Accepted into the acting group "Eight Lancashire Lads". Being left-handed, he played the violin, took lessons from a conductor, and boxed. My brother helped me learn the roles; Charlie couldn’t read.
- 1912 . He joined the troupe of entrepreneur Fred Karno , with whom he traveled to England and the USA. Signed a contract with the Keystone film studio and moved to Los Angeles.
- 1914. In the comedy “Children's Car Racing,” the image of a little tramp first appeared (by the way, Charlie’s height did not exceed 165 cm). “He wants you to believe that he is a scientist, or a musician, or a duke, or a polo player. And at the same time, he is ready to pick up a cigarette butt from the sidewalk or take candy from a child. And under the right circumstances, he is capable of giving a lady a kick in the ass,” Chaplin imagined his hero.
- 1917. He signed a contract for $1 million, becoming at that time the most expensive actor in history.
- 1918. During World War I, he promoted the Freedom Loan, calling for donations to the army.
- 1921. He traveled to Europe on the Olympic liner, the brother of the Titanic. In London and Paris he attracted crowds of fans.
- 1922. He built his first home in Beverly Hills. In addition to forty rooms, it had a cinema hall and an organ.
- On January 15, 1926, he began filming “The Circus.” In one scene, the monkeys bit him badly and he was treated for six weeks.
- 1940. The all-talkie The Great Dictator was the last film to use the character of the tramp Charlie.
- 1952. On September 17, he went to London for the world premiere of Footlights, after which he was banned from entering the United States. He settled in Switzerland, in the town of Vevey on the shores of Lake Geneva.
- 1954. Awarded the International Peace Prize.
- 1965. He became a laureate of the Erasmus Prize for his contribution to European culture.
- 1972. Received an honorary Oscar. To do this, he came to the United States for a short time - he was given only a limited visa.
- 1975 . Knighted by Queen Elizabeth II .
- 1977. On December 25, he died in his sleep at the age of 88 at his home in Vevey. He was buried in the local cemetery.
- 1978. On March 2, the actor’s coffin was dug up and stolen for ransom. The criminals were arrested. On May 17, the actor was reburied at the Meruz cemetery in Corsier-sur-Vevey (Switzerland) under an almost two-meter concrete slab.
Yevgeny Mironov received the Chaplin Award from the hands of his granddaughter: “An amazing artist”
Its release is planned after “City Lights” goes out on the big screen, and the orchestra conducted by Vladimir Spivakov completes the “scoring” of the great film of the great Charlie. Kira will bring his golden statuette onto the stage and announce: “Evgeny Mironov.”
From the MK dossier: Kiera Sunshine Chaplin. 38 years old, originally from Northern Ireland. Granddaughter of the famous Charlie Chaplin and great-great-granddaughter of the American writer and playwright Eugene O'Neill. She is the eldest daughter of Eugene Chaplin, the fifth child of Charlie Chaplin and his last wife Oona O'Neill. During her childhood she lived with her family in Switzerland, and now lives in New York. She has been working as a professional model since the age of 16, took seventeenth place in the list of “the most enviable brides in the world” according to the American magazine FHM, and was also recognized as one of the sexiest women, taking seventh place in the list published by GQ magazine. She posed for the annual Pirelli calendar, Maxim, Elle, Cosmo-Girl and Lucky magazines. She starred in the films “The Importance of Being Earnest”, “Yatna”, “Amy Semple McPherson”, “Japan”. The Independent wrote about her: “Kira Chaplin proved to Hollywood that success is in her blood.”
“This award is given to actors and directors who have had an amazing, I would say, outstanding career,” says Kira. — I want to emphasize that this is not a comedy award, we have already presented it to Robert De Niro, Meryl Streep, Martin Scorsese, Tom Hanks...
— Who chooses the candidate for the award? Film professionals or just the Chaplin family?
“Our family chooses, including me, but not the whole family, of course, participated in the voting. In general, seven years ago we started presenting the award mainly to American actors. And three years ago we decided to expand its borders - and this was the idea of my grandfather, who always wanted to overcome the language barrier. Since Russia has a huge film and entertainment industry, I am in Moscow today.
— Is this your first time presenting this award?
- In Russia - yes. But this year, in November, for the third time I will take her to China. Spike Lee has already received it. And in Russia... I hope that the history of the award will continue.
— How did the choice fall this year on Evgeniy Mironov, and not on another artist or director?
— His works speak for themselves - in cinema and theater.
— Which of his works do you personally like best?
— The theatrical works that he has been doing lately are very interesting to me. I saw “Van Gogh. Letters to my brother" is a very simple, but subtly executed performance, with an amazing performance by Evgeniy. I like him in movies, but I don’t remember exactly the names of the films, and so as not to be mistaken, I won’t name them. So our family chose Evgeny Mironov.

Kira Chaplina
— Is the award just a statuette in the image of your great grandfather or does it imply some kind of material reward?
- Just a figurine. But I want to clarify that, for example, in New York, at the Lincoln Center, we can give money for some project related to the restoration of old films. We present the award to charitable companies, and it is very good that Evgeniy is involved in charity - this factor is definitely taken into account.
— There are a lot of Chaplins living around the world. Do you keep in touch with each other?
- Yes, sure. I see many of them often, in particular I am very close to Aurelia Thieret (she lives in France). We periodically meet with them in different places and travel a lot. It sounds funny, but we Chaplins live everywhere.
- How many of you? Have you tried to count?
— About twenty second cousins.
— Can we say that all the Chaplins are friendly with each other or creative jealousy does not contribute to this?
- There is no jealousy, we get along very well. Everyone is engaged in different professions. I maintain relationships with Dolores, Carmen, I already talked about Aurelia... Yes, with everyone.
— Among your ancestors are actors and writers. And you mainly preferred modeling and advertising business.
- Yes, I like fashion. I'm a model and actress, but I also design clothes. I produce television shows.
— What style of clothing do you prefer?
— In different ways: depends on the mood and situation. Fashion changes, and I like one style, then another. I came up with this cape (shows a wide cherry-colored silk stole embroidered with beads) myself.
— How often do you come to Russia?
— This is my third visit to Russia. Last year I was in your Moscow region, in Klin, at the Tchaikovsky Festival. And in 2006, I was in Vladivostok at a film festival. Sorry, I have to go. The film begins.
In the Svetlanov Hall on the screen is the tramp Charlie in the film “City Lights,” which he shot in 1931. And in 2020, this film masterpiece is “voiced” by the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Russia under the direction of Vladimir Spivakov. In this film, Chaplin acted as a screenwriter, director, leading actor, producer, choreographer and, for the first time, as a composer. But the orchestration and arrangement of Chaplin's music was done by professional musicians - Arthur Johnston and Alfred Newman.
