The fourth wife of Leonid Yarmolnik, who he inherited from the bard Vladimir Vysotsky

BIOGRAPHY

Leonid Yarmolnik was born into a simple family, far from art. His father was a military man, his mother worked as a laboratory assistant in a clinical laboratory.

The future actor spent his childhood in Lvov, where the family moved due to his father’s appointment to a new duty station. The boy was involved in swimming and speed skating, and attended drama classes. After graduating from school, the young man decided to connect his life with the acting profession. On the second attempt, Leonid entered the Shchukin School, studying on the course of Yu. Katin-Yartsev. “When I came for the first time, Lyudmila Stavskaya was taking the course, and she didn’t take me. And Katin-Yartsev sat on the commission that listened to this set. And then he passes me and says: “Lenya, come next year, I’m hiring.” And maybe this was the defining moment in my life. This did not guarantee that I would get in, but I still interested him in some way. This offer was like a ticket to my future life,” recalls the artist.

Family and children of Leonid Yarmolnik

Leonid Yarmolnik’s family and children are the most important values in the actor’s life. He tirelessly repeats that without his loved ones he would not have been able to achieve such heights in creativity.

His parents were not connected with the art world. His father served as a commander in a motorized rifle battalion, and his mother worked as a laboratory assistant. However, it was his relatives who, noticing his craving for acting, tried to support him in every possible way. As far as we know, now the parents, together with Leonid’s sister Lyudmila, permanently reside in New York.

Leonid Yarmolnik was able to meet the only one who could create a cozy family nest. Together they raised a beautiful daughter, Alexandra, who gave her parents two grandchildren - Peter and Pavel. Grandfather enjoys spending time with the boys and highly appreciates the fact that he is trusted to go on walks with them. Although, according to Leonid, at first he fell into a stupor for a minute when little Peter woke up in the stroller.

THEATER

Immediately after graduating from the institute, Leonid Yarmolnik was accepted into the troupe of the Taganka Theater. The actor played in the plays “Ten Days That Shook the World”, “Fallen and Living”, “Rush Hour”. In 1984, when Anatoly Efros was appointed instead of Yuri Lyubimov to the post of chief director of the theater, Yarmolnik decided to leave the theater.

In 2010, Leonid returned to the theater stage. The artist played the main role in the play “Happy New Year...” on the stage of Sovremennik. In 2020, the premiere of an updated version of the play entitled “And Again Happy New Year” took place on the stage of the Russian Song Theater, in which the main roles were played by Leonid Yarmolnik and Nikolai Fomenko.

MOVIE

The actor made his film debut in 1974, starring in Inessa Selezneva’s film “Your Rights?” The first work, after which attention was paid to the young actor, was the film “Detective”, in which Yarmolnik played the bandit Gnus. At the same time, Mark Zakharov’s film “That Same Munchausen” was released, in which the artist played the role of Theophilus, the son of Baron Munchausen.

Yarmolnik’s real popularity came from the pop miniature “Chicken Tobacco,” shown in the “Around Laughter” program. The actor recalls: “I already had the films “Detective” and “That Same Munchausen” to my credit; I was already a fairly famous artist. “Chicken Tobacco” hit the mark so well from the point of view of the people’s sense of humor that the issue of my tombstone was practically resolved. Today I can honestly say that I am proud of it. It’s like a label, a sign.”

Today, the actor’s filmography includes more than 120 films. Among Yarmolnik’s works are roles in the films “TASS is authorized to declare...”, “The Man from Boulevard des Capuchins”, “Women’s Club”, “My Stepbrother Frankenstein”, “Hipsters”, and many others. But the artist played the main and, perhaps, his best role in Alexei German’s film “It’s Hard to Be God.”

"It's Hard to Be God"

Alexey German planned to shoot the film “It’s Hard to Be God” based on the story of the Strugatsky brothers back in 1968, but in the end the film crew started working only in 1999. In total, work on the film lasted almost 15 years, and it was released only in 2013.

In the film, Leonid Yarmolnik played the role of Rumata. The appointment to the role came as a complete surprise to the actor. Until the very end, he could not believe that Herman had chosen him. “Herman always filmed comedians; Nikulin, Mironov, Rolan Bykov played for him... It’s like Shakespeare’s jesters. They turn out to be the most tragic, dramatic and succinct, reflecting the time and problems. And still I couldn’t imagine it - where am I and where is Herman?” recalls Yarmolnik.

The painting “It’s Hard to Be God” was the last for Alexey German. The premiere took place after the director's death. The importance of the film for Russian cinema is difficult to overestimate. Leonid Yarmolnik argues: “I call this film “The Bible from Herman.” It's more than a movie. This is a movie that is designed to make viewers and everyone think about how and why we live. Not in a utilitarian sense, but in a universal human sense.”

Leonid Yarmolnik's wife - Oksana Yarmolnik

Leonid Yarmolnik’s wife, Oksana Yarmolnik, became the last love of the legendary man, Vladimir Vysotsky. Her meeting with Leonid occurred two years later, after the death of the bard.

Oksana herself comes from a creative family: her great-grandfather was the owner of an atelier and sewed costumes for actresses, and grandfathers on both sides also sewed celebrities at one time. The girl's love for sewing is in her blood. Since childhood, she has not parted with a thread and a needle, making all kinds of outfits for dolls.

In the theater where Yarmolnik performed, Oksana worked as a costume designer. For one of the holidays, her husband gave her her own studio, where she makes exclusive children's toys.

In his interviews, the actor has repeatedly admitted that he and his wife often have quarrels, but they have no effect on love and devotion. Thirty years of marriage is the best proof of this.

PRODUCER

Leonid Yarmolnik is actively involved in producing activities. He worked on the films “Moscow Holidays”, “Crossroads”, “Barack”, “My Stepbrother Frankenstein”, “Vise”, “Hipsters”, “Ku! Kin-Dza-Dza". In almost all of these films, Yarmolnik acted not only as a producer, but also as an actor.

One of Leonid’s latest production works is the film “Night Guardians,” which tells about the struggle of people with vampires, ghouls, and other evil spirits. The main role in the film was played by Ivan Yankovsky, and Leonid Yarmolnik himself became his partner.

INTERVIEW

About hot temper

“Over the years I have come to consider this a virtue. Because pseudo-intellectuality is not for me. Now I remember all the situations in life when I first hit, and then thought... And I understand that if it all happened all over again, I would have acted exactly the same.”

About the ability to choose roles

“Today I can afford to carefully choose what I do as a profession. I have some kind of credibility and sympathy from the audience, and I cannot act in everything that is offered to me. And I have enough time to film what needs to be filmed. I’m in a position where, if necessary, the filming period will be built for me.”

About fame

“Fame is like money. This is a resource. If you are famous, you can do a lot of good and useful things. Doors open, they listen to you. It’s like in the criminal world, when you are the authority.”

About politics

“I have no relationship with the authorities. I've always minded my own business. My purpose is to practice my profession, and who is on the street - communists, democrats, liberals... This may worry me depending on the extent to which life, laws, the judicial system, medicine, education change. But I will still do what I do. I don’t shoot commissioned government films.”

About cars

“I love cars very much. And I spend a lot of money, attention and effort on them. I am one of those who believes that there are two brands of cars: Mercedes and everyone else. And my life has confirmed this. I have a 17-year-old Mercedes, the most famous 129 body. And there is the 216th - a coupe, a big Mercedes. There are two “Victories” from the year I was born. My two favorite old cars. They are saluted when I ride.”

About money

“For me all my life, money has not been a means of enrichment, but a key to freedom - to choose what you will do tomorrow.”
