Biography of Angelika Varum

Singer Anzhelika Varum (real name Maria) was born in Lviv in the family of composer Yuri Varum and theater director Galina Shapovalova.
She has a half-brother, Mikhail (1989). The surname “Varum” (translated from German as “why”) was taken by Angelica’s great-grandfather while escaping from the Nazis; his real surname is Roebuck.

Since childhood, she was fond of music, played the piano and guitar, and in high school she toured neighboring cities with the school theater.

After school, without entering the theater institute, she began working as a backing vocalist in her father’s studio, and briefly played bass guitar in the group “Combination”.

Varum’s singing career began almost by accident: in 1990, her father invited her to record the song “Midnight Cowboy” in the studio, which immediately became a hit. A year later, the first album “Goodbye, my boy” was released, and Anzhelika Varum became famous thanks to the main song, as well as the single “Whistle Man”.

The stage name “Angelica” did not appear by chance: as a child, her grandmother called her an angel. And when it was time to perform on stage, Varum decided to change the name of the Virgin Mary to Angelica. To her family and friends she remained Masha.

In 1995, the second album “La-la-fa” appeared with the hits “Town” and “The Artist Who Paints the Rain.” Angelika Varum toured with concerts all over the country, and a year later she recorded two new albums at once - “Two Minutes from Love” and “Winter Cherry” (she no longer sings this song after the tragedy in Kemerovo).

In 1997, Varum played in the play “Emigrant Pose”, and in 1999 - in the film “The Sky in Diamonds”. At the same time, the album “Only She” was released, and a year later - the album “Office Romance”, joint with her husband Leonid Agutin. Since then, the couple often perform together.

In 2001, her father invited Anzhelika Varum to become a producer in a new record company.

In 2002 she recorded the album “Stop, Curiosity”, in 2007 - “Music”, in 2009 - “He Will Leave”, in 2013 - “Crazy”, in 2020 - “The Woman Walked” (Anzhelika Varum wrote lyrics for songs from it herself), in 2020 - “On a break.”

In 2011 she became an Honored Artist of the Russian Federation.

Angelika Varum is a multiple winner of the “Song of the Year”, “Golden Gramophone”, and the “Ovation” award.

In April 2020, she became ill at a concert in Ulyanovsk.

Children of Angelika Varum

and Leonid Agutin rarely see their parents. Their daughter Lisa, who recently turned fourteen years old, can rightfully consider herself an American, because she almost always lives in Miami with her grandfather Yuri Varum and his wife. In this regard, Lisa’s childhood is very reminiscent of the childhood of her mother, Angelica Varum, who spent her youth with her grandmother while her parents were on endless tours.

Being away from her parents, Lisa does not miss them, because she has hardly seen them since she was one and a half years old. Leonid and Angelika visit their daughter, but she is in Moscow very rarely, and it is very difficult to lure her to the Russian capital. Relatively recently, Angelica found out that her daughter Lisa has a half-sister, Polina, who is two years older than her. Leonid Agutin hid for a very long time that even before the wedding he had a period when he simultaneously dated Angelica and another girl who gave birth to his daughter Polina. But this fact did not become decisive when choosing a life partner - Leonid chose Angelica, and for a long time he preferred not to tell anyone that he had an illegitimate daughter.

For a very long time, the children of Angelica Varum and Leonid Agutin did not know anything about each other, but once they met, they quickly found a common language, which made their dad incredibly happy. Polina also lives away from her father. At first she lived with her mother in Italy, and then they moved to France. The girls communicate with each other in English, and when they come to Moscow, they speak Russian with Angelica and their father. Lisa and Polina became so close that when they had to part, they were very upset.

Lisa inherited her talent and love for music from her parents. She plays the guitar excellently, and in Miami the girl has her own rock band that plays at school parties. She is not afraid to perform in front of a large audience and already has experience of participating in her parents’ concert when they came on tour to America. But, according to the girl, she fell in love with music not out of a desire to become like Angelica and Leonid, but after becoming acquainted with the work of one of the rock bands. And I learned to play the guitar from a self-instruction manual. Polina is very good at languages - in addition to Russian, she speaks excellent Italian, French and English. The children of Angelika Varum and Leonid Agutin feel like foreigners in Russia, although both were born in Moscow. Angelika Varum: photos before and after retouching

“Yesterday the magazine “Caravan of Stories” came out with my interview. I was very pleased to meet and talk with journalist Alla Zanimonets. The conversation, in my opinion, turned out to be quite interesting. But when I saw the cover, I was upset. I don’t understand how, when printed, quite nice, lively photographs produce such a terrible wax monster without age and without any hint of emotion?! What kind of trend is this - turning living people into “dead”? I’m not against delicate retouching, but you can’t completely erase a personality by putting it under the steamroller of a ruthless Photoshop?! And all this in pursuit of some ephemeral standard. I apologize to the creative team of the magazine for my incontinence. I know everyone tried. Thank you! But not speaking out on this topic means supporting the trend of depersonalization,” comments the star.
