Gossip Cop Calendar: Rod Stewart

Rod Stewart's childhood and family

British pop/rock musician, author and performer of songs Rod Stewart (Roderick David Stewart) was born on January 10, 1945 in the capital of Britain into a working-class family.
His father, Robert Joseph, was a native of Edinburgh, his mother, Elsie, of London. The singer's sisters, Maria and Peggy, and brothers, Don and Bob, were born in Scotland. Then the family moved to London, where Roddy was born. My favorite subject at school was history. As a child, he also enjoyed model railroading and football, an interest in which he continues to this day. He started playing guitar at the age of 11. Rod's father and brothers were football fans. Therefore, he first decided to become a professional football player. To the delight of his father, he trained a lot and ended up in the local club Brentford, but not for long. The craving for music won. Moreover, from his youth it became obvious that Rod would become a star - he was talented, passionately loved music and, of course, attention to his own person.

Rod Stewart is a father of many children

The first time he experienced the joy of fatherhood was at the age of eighteen; his illegitimate daughter was raised by a foster family. His eldest child is already over fifty years old. Married to artist Alana Hamilton, they had a daughter and a son.

Another wife, Rachelle Hunter, gave the famous singer a girl and a boy. And Emberg’s daughter Rabi reminds her of her relationship with the model.

Rod admits to the media that he is very happy in his family life. Twelve years ago, Rod walked down the aisle for the third time. His lover was model Penny Lancaster, with whom the artist lived under the same roof for eight years before marrying.

Rod Stewart's first songs and bands

He began his creative journey at the age of 17, going on an unofficial tour of Europe (together with Wizz Jones). Upon arrival in Spain, the singer's European journey and touring performances, however, ended (with arrest for vagrancy and deportation to his homeland).

Rod Stewart was already popular in his youth

In London, he continued to hone his natural vocal abilities and musical skills, playing on the streets, in clubs and pubs, and became a member of various groups. Rod was a fan of soul, folk, blues and even stated that he would like to be black. In 1964 he toured with Dimensions, and later with The Rolling Stones as part of Steampacket.

In 1966, he joined The Jeff Beck Group as a vocalist, organized by Jeff Beck, and experienced the taste of long-awaited success. The group, which also included bass guitarist Roney Wood and Ainsley Dunbar on drums, performed throughout Britain and the United States, releasing two platinum albums - Truth (1968) and Beck-Ola (1969).

Rod celebrated his 74th birthday this year, but he doesn’t even think about retiring. The artist has already given concerts throughout Canada, even visiting Moscow. He also shone at the New Orleans Jazz Festival.

The most significant moments of creativity, the best songs of Rod Stewart

From 1966, Rod (along with Ron Wood) joined The Faces and also sang solo, releasing his first collection, An Old Raincoat Won't Ever Let You Down, in 1969.
He performed in England and during tours, enriching his repertoire and improving his vocal art. The second solo album of 1970, Gasoline Alley, consolidated the artist's success. The following - Every Picture Tells a Story (1971), Never a Dull Moment (1972) were also successful, and hits - Maggie May, Stay With Me, You Wear It Well topped the Singles Charts of the United Kingdom and the USA. The singer became a superstar and a world famous singer. After breaking up in 1975, The Faces, despite the success of their last collection Ooh La La, focused on their solo career. The release of the album The Best Of Rod Stewart summed up his collaboration with the British company Mercury Records. The singer moved to Warner Music Group and moved to Los Angeles - due to exorbitant English taxes and passion for the “Bond girl” Britt Ekland. Tonight's The Night, Sailing, The Killing Of Geogie reached the top of the American charts. In particular, the last of them, according to the singer, he is still really proud of today (it sings about the murder of a dark-skinned guy of non-traditional sexual orientation).

Rod Stewart sold out the Copacabana

The collection Foot Loose & Fancy Free, recorded with his own band Rod Stewart Group in 1977, including the later hits You're In My Heart, I Was Only Joking, Hot Legs, was also successful. However, music critics were somewhat disgusted by Rod's new look, which included heavy use of makeup and bright, exotic costumes.

The 1978 Blondes Have More Fun collection (ninth) topped the Billboard 200 - the list of the most popular (according to sales statistics) albums in the United States, and the single Da Ya Think I'm Sexy? led the Billboard Hot 100 and the Singles Charts of the USA and Foggy Albion. Although it should be noted that it was initially received negatively by critics - allegedly it replaced such valuable qualities of Stewart as sincerity and passion with parody and pretense. But later the opinion of experts changed dramatically, and the merits of the composition were generally recognized.

The period of creative activity from 1982 to 1988 is generally considered unsuccessful. But the performance at the Brazilian rock festival Rock in Rio (1985) was triumphant. The performer himself compared it to winning the World Cup. The return to first position in the Singles Charts occurred after the release of the singer's fifteenth studio album, Out Of Order, in 1988 (the hits were Forever Young, Lost In You). In 1989, performances during a tour of South America were a great success. The public expressed their delight in a highly emotional manner, comparable to Beatlemania, and the police had to use water cannons to “calm down” especially ardent fans.

It is impossible not to mention the success of the song It Takes Two, performed by Rod in a duet with Tina Turner, All For Love with Adams and Sting. The singer's 1993 performance with Ron Wood on MTV was also highly praised. Critics and audiences especially liked Cut Across Shorty and Handbags And Gladrags. In 1994, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and his performance at the Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro attracted an unprecedented number of fans of his work - 3.5 million spectators.

Rod Stewart

Stewart continued to work on his second solo album, Gasoline Alley, which he released in the fall of 1970. One of the most beautiful numbers on the album was the composition “Lady Day,” and one of the main components of the successful sound was the masterful guitar of Martin Quittenton, in whose hands it sounded like a mandolin. “Gasoline Alley”, which appeared in the American Top 30, was supported by the singer with his first solo tour in the USA. Rod Stewart was entering the decisive and most successful period of his career. At the beginning of 1971, Faces released their second album, Long Player, which was better received than the group's previous release, but much quieter than the lead singer's third solo album. With the release of Every Picture Tells a Story, Rod Stewart becomes an international star. The album leads the charts in America, England and other European countries, despite the fact that the first promotional single “Reason to Believe” went almost unnoticed.

The single "Reason To Believe" was a relative success at first, but when DJs started playing side two of the record with "Maggie May" - a pretty semi-acoustic folk ballad - the single immediately shot to No. 1 in the UK charts. On the wave of this success, The Faces’ third album, “A Nod Is As Good As a Wink... To A Blind Horse” (1971), also hit the top ten (in England and the USA). On both sides of the Atlantic, "Maggie May" stayed at number one for five weeks. The vocalist’s personal successes had a direct impact on the attitude towards Faces’ releases. The team's third studio long-play, "A Nod Is as Good as a Wink...To a Blind Horse", prepared towards the end of 1971, became a top ten hit on major music markets. Rod Stewart's career developed rapidly, far exceeding the success of his team. Apart from the growing tension in the relationship, this did not bode well for the team.

In the summer, the singer published his fourth solo album, Never a Dull Moment, which practically repeated the success of its predecessor. Stewart emerges here as a mature performer, with excellent taste in selecting material for cover versions. His take on Jimi Hendrix's "Angel" climbs to Top 40 in the US. With irresistible charm, he also performs his own compositions, which turn out to be compositionally no less interesting than classical standards, for example, the wonderful song “You Wear It Well”

Rod Stewart currently

In 2000, Stewart underwent surgery for thyroid cancer. The compilation Human, released the following year, only reached number 50 in the charts, but The Story So Far: The Very Best Of, which combined works from previous years, became a hit. A series of albums, The Great American Songbook, containing compositions by other musicians dating back to the classics of the 30s and 40s of the last century, brought Stewart success, but were assessed with restraint by experts.

Rod Stewart with his large family

In 2005, the collection Gold was released, containing many cover versions. The album Fly Me to the Moon...The Great American Songbook Volume V, released in 2010, took fourth place on the Canadian and Australian Singles Charts. Rod Stewart's latest collection, Time (2013), according to the author, has no covers, contains good lyrics, a lot of acoustic guitar, mandolin and violin.
