The story of the life and death of this man, who spent a total of about two decades in prisons and colonies, committed illegal activities and had an addiction to hard drugs that ruined him, is probably not particularly surprising by the standards of thieves in law like him.

But there is a circumstance that can be called an ironic lottery of fate: the daughter of the thief Andro, who inherited his surname, also became a famous person, only in a completely different, peaceful, field of activity.

Katie Topuria is a popular singer, vocalist of the famous musical group “A-Studio”.

Of course, she constantly had to answer questions from the press related to her “unlucky” father, and, probably, she had to try to ensure that the Topuria surname was known thanks to music, and not thanks to crime chronicles.

However, let us return to the biography of Andro Iraklievich Topuria.

Law-abiding youth

Criminal proceedings

The year was 1986. His wife Natalya was pregnant with their first child, a girl. But... was it really a fatal misconduct by Andro himself, or was there a miscarriage of justice - but in June 1986, the Tbilisi court sentenced Andro Topuria to serve a sentence of 15 years in prison.

There were two charges under which he was accused: hooliganism and manslaughter. Now it’s difficult to judge what actually happened then, but Andro didn’t have to serve his entire sentence; he was released soon after his conviction, since it was discovered that the murder was committed by another person.

While Andro was imprisoned, in September 1986, his daughter Ketavan (Keti) was born.

However, the very stay in the colony, in a specific criminal environment, greatly changed Andro. He was “crowned” as a thief in law (“the approach” was made by the thief Shavladze, nicknamed Chai-Chai). Andro made acquaintances with criminal authorities, and also tried drugs (probably already then becoming an addicted drug addict, drawn into the drug trade for this reason).

After his release, during the years of “perestroika” and the collapse of the USSR, Andro Topuria, under the patronage of local crime bosses, became a major “huckster” - a dealer who resold narcotic substances.

He got money - the family began to lead a luxurious lifestyle, living in Tbilisi.

For their daughter, who showed an interest in music, her parents provided every opportunity for learning and development in this direction - she was taught by the best teachers, she went to vocal competitions, where she could show her talent.

In 1996, by decision of the Tbilisi court, Andro Topuria served six months in prison - the reason was a fight that caused serious bodily harm to the victim, and a firearm found during the arrest of the thief.

In August 2000, the same Tbilisi court ruled on a one-year prison sentence under Art. 238 parts 1.2 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Georgia. It is interesting that after that period Andro officially changed his last name - from Topuria to Sanodze: it was his mother’s last name.

And in April 2010, Andro was detained in Moscow (by that time he had moved there to live with his family). The elements of the crime were obvious - the arrest occurred immediately after the thief met with a man who gave him about 3 grams of the “hard” drug methadone.

Topuria-Sanodze did not resist arrest and clarified that he took the drugs exclusively for personal use. In July 2010, a trial was held in this case, which handed down a sentence of 3 years in prison.

Andro, who was in the Matrosskaya Tishina prison during the investigation, was redirected to serve his sentence in a colony in Mari El.

No other crimes were found against him - he stayed away from thieves’ intrigues, did not claim great power, did not behave scandalously, and occasionally acted as an “arbiter” in various matters between low-ranking thieves. Rumor has it that he “controlled” several market traders. He was close to Ded Hassan’s group, but was not one of those particularly close.

Drug addiction

Ever since his first term, Andro got involved with drugs. In the 90s – 2000s, he overcame his addiction to methadone substances. So, in 2006, he was detained at the Kyrgyz Manas airport, but was released, since Topuria flew to Kyrgyzstan not on thieves’ business, but for the sake of treatment for drug addiction and attending his daughter’s concert.

Among the thieves, it was also known about Andro’s addictions - there were opinions that he should be “crowned” for this, but it did not come to that.

Death in a prison colony

Drugs were the cause of the sudden and early death of Andro Topuria-Sanodze. On September 22, 2010, Andro’s cellmates in the Mari-El correctional colony in Medvedevo saw that the thief was not getting out of bed - death came to him in a dream.

The actual medical cause was a heart attack caused by an overdose of the drug methadone. Before this, he had already had heart problems, even during his stay at Matrosskaya Tishina.

And in the colony, although he did not complain of being unwell, due to his status as a “lawyer” he did not do any work and, as it turned out, he could even get drugs behind bars in an exemplary colony.

Andro Topuria was buried in Tbilisi. The funeral took place on September 29, 2010.
