Alexander Fadeev’s son Mikhail Fadeev: “I was the first to discover my father who had shot himself at the dacha in Peredelkino”

Maxim Fadeev
Maxim Fadeev / Sputnik Singer and songwriter Maxim Fadeev is closing his music label Malfa, and out of the kindness of his heart, is giving away copyrights to all performers for their own songs.

Max Fadeev published a large post on Instagram in which he promised to distribute copyrights to the performers of songs on his label. All except two, whom I did not name.

Fadeev does not intend to give the copyrights to the songs to two former members of the Malfa label - singer Nargiz Zakirova and singer Miami, whose real name is Oleg Krivikov. Both were expelled personally by Makism Fadeev in the summer of 2020 without the right to perform their own songs.

Extraordinary parents

There is still no accurate information about who the real father of Alexander Alexandrovich Fadeev is - his mother did not reveal this secret to anyone. But his mother is well known - the once iconic Soviet theater actress Angelina Stepanova.

In the year the future actor was born, his mother was married to the Moscow Art Theater director Nikolai Gorchakov. However, this union was not happy, since Stepanova was passionately in love with the writer Nikolai Erdman. Despite a passionate affair that lasted seven years, Angelina was afraid to divorce her husband, because in retaliation he could ruin her career. And besides, divorces were not particularly welcomed in the USSR, and, despite all her services to the party, Stepanova could become an actress not allowed to travel abroad.

This complicated love triangle was resolved by life itself. In 1933, the actress's rebellious lover was arrested and sent into exile. And a couple of years later, Angelina Stepanova’s marriage to Nikolai Gorchakov also broke up. What caused this is not known for certain. Either the actress found the courage to leave her unloved husband, or her husband was afraid to ruin his career by being married to the mistress of a repressed man.

However, Angelina Stepanova did not remain unmarried for long. Once, during a tour in Paris, she met a Soviet writer named Alexander Alexandrovich Fadeev, who was in the French capital on a business trip.

Soon, a romance began between the young people and upon arriving home, they got married. This union turned out to be surprisingly strong and the couple were together until Fadeev’s death in 1956. And Stepanova herself, who outlived her wife by 44 years, bequeathed to bury her next to her husband.

A few months after the painting, in July 1936, the newly-made couple had a son, Sasha. Despite the fact that Fadeev (the writer) was not his biological father, Alexander Alexandrovich adopted the boy and raised him as his own. And to emphasize the relationship, the baby was given the name of his adoptive father - Alexander Alexandrovich Fadeev. By the way, because of the same names, confusion often arises, so Stepanova’s son is often called Alexander Fadeev Jr.

Alexander Fadeev: a brief biography of his early years

The stepfather of the future artist, being one of the organizers of the Russian Association of Proletarian Writers (on its basis the Union of Writers of the USSR later appeared), was in favor with the ruling elite.

And Angelina Stepanova’s career at the Moscow Art Theater was progressing well - she was a prima singer for many years. For this reason, despite the difficult years that Fadeev had in his childhood, he lived in relative prosperity, moving in intelligent circles.

Although the parents soon had another son, Mikhail, young Sashenka remained their favorite. She and her brother also communicated closely with their stepfather’s illegitimate daughter, Masha.

“Stalin personally called his father after writing “Destruction”

— Mikhail Alexandrovich, how do you remember your father?

“When he died, I was still just a child. But, of course, I cannot forget with what care he treated me, how worried he was about me reading and learning a lot. We had a huge library.

- And what did he recommend from it?

— There were no edifications. But there are also prohibitions - I read what I wanted. I liked Russian classics and adventure literature - Mine Reid, Jules Verne, Stevenson...

— Where have you been with your father?

— We often went fishing and swimming. After all, we lived more at our father’s official dacha in Peredelkino. The housekeeper was cooking. The parents were completely absorbed in work.

- You were the first to find your father who had shot himself...

- Yes, but even today it’s not easy for me to talk about it.

— Did you have any alarming premonitions the day before?

“I didn’t feel anything that foreshadowed trouble.” The day before the incident, my dad and I went to Moscow and returned late in the evening. And the next day a tragedy occurred. I did not attend my father’s funeral - I was protected from all mourning events because I was ill.

— When did the family find out about the existence of the suicide letter?

— It was hidden until 1990. Nobody knew about the letter, including my mother (famous theater actress Angelina Stepanova - author). She learned about her dad's death from newspapers in Kyiv, where she arrived returning from a tour in Yugoslavia. She was immediately summoned to Moscow.

— My father was called the “writers’ minister.” How did he get to such a high position? Appointed by Stalin?

- I think yes. It played a role that Fadeev was a convinced communist from the age of 16, was a delegate to the Tenth Congress, and one of the leaders of RAPP (Russian Association of Proletarian Writers. - Author). Stalin, highly appreciating “The Defeat,” personally called his father after the novel’s release. They met... In 1939, almost before the war, my father was appointed general secretary of the USSR Writers' Union. During the war years, he lost this position and took it again in 1948.

*In 1939, Alexander Fadeev was appointed general secretary of the USSR Writers' Union. During the war years he lost this position and took it again in 1948

— Is it true that your father repeatedly refused this position, which many dreamed of taking?

“He wrote to Stalin that he wanted to leave and devote himself entirely to creativity. But... they didn’t let him go. As a communist, my father was obliged to carry out the will of the party; he could not disobey. From the suicide letter: “Created for great creativity in the name of communism, from the age of sixteen associated with the party, with workers and peasants, endowed by God with extraordinary talent, I was full of the highest thoughts and feelings that the life of a people, united with beautiful ideals, can generate communism. But they turned me into a dray horse; all my life I trudged along under a load of mediocre, unjustified, innumerable bureaucratic tasks that could have been carried out by any person.”

Debut in the film “War and Peace”

Alexander Alexandrovich Fadeev (actor) first appeared on the silver screen in 1965 as a viscount in the film adaptation of L. Tolstoy’s novel “War and Peace.” Although the role was not big, Fadeev performed it simply brilliantly. Handsome appearance, aristocratic manners and posture - it seemed that he was not playing, but simply living.

After such a successful debut, it seemed that Alexander Fadeev would achieve a lot in cinema. Only one thing upset the ardent young man - his adoptive father never lived to see his debut. The fact is that Alexander Alexandrovich Fadeev (writer), having become disillusioned with the ideals of the Party, committed suicide. He shot himself at his dacha while Angelina Stepanova was on tour abroad.

This tragic event had a significant impact on all the children of the famous writer. So his daughter Masha also committed suicide. And the stepson was known for his suicidal tendencies. But all this will happen later. In the meantime, having shone in “War and Peace,” Alexander Fadeev (actor) received one of the main roles in a new film about climbers.

Personal life[ | ]

Fadeev’s parents, paramedics by profession, were professional revolutionaries by lifestyle[26][27]. Father - Alexander Ivanovich Fadeev (1862-1917), mother - Antonina Vladimirovna Kunz (1873-1954), stepfather Gleb Svitych (1885-1917).

Fadeev married the writer Valeria Gerasimova for the first time in 1926; they divorced in 1932. He met his second wife, People’s Artist of the USSR Angelina Stepanova, in 1937 in Paris, when she came there on tour as part of the Moscow Art Theater troupe [28]. During the Soviet years, it was alleged that they met earlier in order to hide the fact that Fadeev adopted Stepanova’s first-born Alexander, born in 1936. Their common son, Mikhail, was born in 1944.[29]. In addition, in 1943, the common daughter of Fadeev and Margarita Aliger was born - Maria Aleksandrovna Fadeeva (later Maria Aliger-Enzensberger by her husband, committed suicide in her home in London on October 6, 1991 [30]).

The alleged son is the actor Spartak Mishulin, who did not know his father, but assumed that he could be the writer Alexander Fadeev, with whom his mother, Anna Vasilyevna Mishulina, had an affair while studying at the Moscow Mining Academy[31].

Painting "Vertical"

Despite its rather simple plot, the film “Vertical” has become a cult film. First of all, thanks to Vladimir Vysotsky, who wrote several songs for her that still remain hits.

Alexander Fadeev, who played his namesake in the project, Alexander Nikitin, also played an important role in the success of the film.

By the way, there were rumors that while working on the film, Fadeev was passionate about one of the actresses of the project, Larisa Luzhina. Vladimir Vysotsky also courted the girl. But at that time he was not yet an all-Union favorite singer, and the actress chose the more promising Fadeev.

But this choice did not bring her happiness. Taking a closer look at her chosen one, she soon realized that the actor was clearly not the hero of her novel, and refused to become his wife.

“Hell on Earth”: Maxim Fadeev spoke about sudden deafness and breakup with Linda

“The Fate of a Man” continues the conversation with one of the most successful Russian producers, Maxim Fadeev, who has faced a huge number of trials. Born with a heart defect, at the age of 17 he experienced clinical death.

The doctors performed a successful operation, Maxim survived, but, according to him, already at that age he became “adult and wise.”

Ahead of the guy from Kurgan, who took third place in the Yalta-90 competition, was the conquest of Moscow, to which he arrived with his wife Natalya.

The first years were hungry: Fadeev worked at a recording studio, but there was barely enough money to make ends meet.

Then he got a job as an arranger, and they started paying him $50 per song. Back then, however, you had to live in a studio and sleep on the windowsill.

Success as a producer came to Fadeev when he and his wife created the singer Linda. Maxim says that his wife played a huge role in creating her image: she was the singer’s stylist and makeup artist, and Maxim created the material.

He admits that, due to natural modesty, he did not want to admit it earlier, but all the musicians who allegedly worked on Linda’s songs were only Fadeev.

“I was embarrassed to indicate myself in all points,” admits the producer.

He says that he still loves Linda - she was his best singer, but they have not spoken for 20 years. Their paths diverged.

And after that, Fadeev faced new blows of fate. In the mid-1990s, he left Russia because, as he admitted, he was “offended by the country.”

“I loved the Soviet Union, was a pioneer, believed in heroes, in good medicine - and suddenly all this was taken away from me,” says Maxim.

During the same period, another tragedy occurred: he and his wife, due to the fault of doctors who made an incorrect diagnosis, lost their daughter.

The couple went to Germany, where in 1997 their son Savva was born. And then Fadeev, having lived abroad for 12 years, returned to Russia.

“Everything has changed here, people have become different,” notes the producer.

When he was 36, in Fadeev’s life, according to him, “hell on Earth” began. While in the UAE, he sat on the ocean shore and listened to Viktor Tsoi through headphones. Suddenly at some point everything became quiet. It turned out that Fadeev had lost his hearing. Then all the artists turned their backs on him.

Maxim was already thinking about leaving for the taiga and “being left alone with nature, with the beast.” When Fadeev was completely desperate, life brought him together with people who helped him regain his hearing. Then all the artists returned to him.

Who saved the famous producer and how? Why did Fadeev interrupt his collaboration with Linda and break up with Nargiz Zakirova? Why did you lose your hearing? And how does he remember the first hungry years in Moscow?

Film career decline

The success of the artist’s first works quickly gave him star fever. He began to argue with directors, skip rehearsals and show up to filming after feasts in a completely inappropriate form.

Despite Fadeev’s talent and charm, and also out of respect for his mother, he was forgiven a lot. Moreover, at first those around him hoped that such bad behavior was a temporary phenomenon. But they were deeply mistaken.

For this reason, by the end of the sixties, the artist’s demand in cinema dropped to almost zero. After “Vertical,” he had two more more or less serious works (“One Chance in a Thousand” and “Conscience”), and the rest was filming in episodes (“In the same microdistrict,” “Front behind the front line,” “Lonely hostel provided”, “Accident – cop’s daughter”, “Mother”). Moreover, they often forgot to indicate the name of the performer (either intentionally or on purpose) in the credits.

Alexander Fadeev: biography during his years of work at the Moscow Art Theater

Despite the failures in cinema, the artist’s career progressed more vigorously in the theater. However, this did not happen because of Fadeev’s talent, but thanks to the patronage of his respected mother. So, seeing that her son’s film career had reached a dead end, and the Soviet Army Theater was preparing to fire her child, Angelina Stepanova persuaded Oleg Efremov to take her son to the Moscow Art Theater.

Although Efremov was not very pleased with the prospect of working with the eccentric, spoiled Fadeev, he gave in to Stepanova’s request.

Despite his difficult character, Alexander Fadeev turned out to be a good acquisition for the Moscow Art Theater and Oleg Nikolaevich sometimes gave him roles in his productions (royal volunteer in “The Dream of Reason”, loader in “Old New Year”).

However, feeling that because of his mother a lot was being forgiven, Fadeev Jr. began to become impudent and argue with Efremov. The conflict between them grew so much that after the division of the Moscow Art Theater, Alexander went to Tatyana Doronina, although Angelina Stepanova remained with Oleg Nikolaevich.

In the new Moscow Art Theater named after. Gorky, the artist played until 1989 (according to other sources, until 1993).

Family life with Lyudmila Gurchenko

Despite the decline of such a promising career, Alexander Fadeev still gained some fame among the theater beau monde. His creativity, however, had nothing to do with it. His love affairs and carousing brought him fame. The fact is that Fadeev was not only a very handsome man, but also a very charming and gallant suitor. He knew how to charm and show off. Thanks to the connections of his stepfather, respected throughout the country, and the protection of his mother, he could afford to lead a free and quite prosperous life, without particularly straining himself.

However, after a series of novels, one day Fadeev realized that he was ready for a serious relationship. His first official wife was Lyudmila Gurchenko.

He met her at the WTO restaurant. Lyudmila Markovna was fascinated by the capital's handsome man. And quite soon after meeting, the lovers submitted an application to the registry office and signed.

But they were not destined to live happily ever after. Being the darling of his parents and fate, Alexander Fadeev loved to spend his free time in restaurants and noisy companies. While for Gurchenko, her successes were not at all easy. After two years of marriage, Lyudmila Markovna realized that she did not want to live with her husband, so she filed for divorce.

Marriage to Stalin's granddaughter

After an unsuccessful first marriage, Alexander Fadeev was not at all disappointed in his family life. His biography is known for two more marriages.

So for the second time he walked down the aisle with actress Natella Kandelaki. This union was also not strong and the couple soon separated.

Fadeev’s third and last wife was Nadezhda Stalina (daughter of Vasily Stalin).

The artist lived with her until her death. How happy this union was is difficult to judge, since Nadezhda Stalin was accustomed to not washing dirty linen in public. However, knowing Fadeev’s character, we can confidently assume that his third wife’s life with him was not at all easy.

The last years of the artist

Despite the problems in the theater, the artist in recent years lived as in his youth, spending time drinking with friends. Relatives claimed that Fadeev suffered from alcohol addiction. There were also rumors that, like his adoptive father, Alexander Jr. tried to commit suicide several times. However, these rumors have no official confirmation.

Drunkenness and inattention to his health led to the fact that the artist did not live to see sixty, dying in 1993 at the age of 57. He was buried next to his third wife Nadezhda at the Vagankovskoye cemetery in Moscow.

Public position. Recent years[ | ]

Standing at the head of the Union of Writers of the USSR, Alexander Fadeev implemented the decisions of the party and government in relation to his colleagues: M. M. Zoshchenko, A. A. Akhmatova, A. P. Platonov. In 1946, after the report of A. A. Zhdanov, which actually destroyed Zoshchenko and Akhmatova as writers [ source not specified 1990 days

], Fadeev was among those who carried out this sentence.[16]

In 1949, Alexander Fadeev became one of the authors of a programmatic editorial article in the Pravda newspaper entitled “About one anti-patriotic group of theater critics”(?), This article served as the beginning of a campaign that became known as “The Fight against Cosmopolitanism” [ source not specified 997 days

But in 1948 he tried to allocate a significant amount from the funds of the Union of Writers of the USSR for M. M. Zoshchenko, who was left without a livelihood. Fadeev showed sincere participation in the fate of many writers disliked by the authorities: B. L. Pasternak, N. A. Zabolotsky, L. N. Gumilyov[9], several times donated money for the treatment of A. P. Platonov to his wife.

Having a hard time experiencing such a split, he suffered from insomnia and fell into depression. In recent years, Fadeev became addicted to alcohol and went on long binges[16]. He underwent treatment at the Barvikha sanatorium.

Ilya Ehrenburg wrote about him[17]:

Fadeev was a brave but disciplined soldier; he never forgot the prerogatives of the commander-in-chief.

Fadeev did not accept the Khrushchev thaw[18]. In 1956, from the rostrum of the 20th Congress of the CPSU, the activities of the leader of Soviet writers were harshly criticized by M. A. Sholokhov. Fadeev was not elected a member, but only a candidate member of the CPSU Central Committee[19]. Fadeev was directly called one of the perpetrators of repression among Soviet writers.

After the 20th Congress of the CPSU, Fadeev’s internal conflict escalated to the limit. He confessed to his old friend Yuri Libedinsky: “My conscience torments me. It’s hard to live, Yura, with bloody hands.”[20]
