— What was the most memorable gift your children gave you?
— When I lived with Valera in Spokane, Canada, Pavel flew in from Vancouver between games to wish me a happy birthday. We were already sitting at the table, suddenly the doorbell rang, and Pashka came in with a huge bouquet of roses. I was simply stunned: “How did you get here?” It turns out that the son rented the plane on purpose! He sat with us for two hours and flew away. It was so nice that I even cried.

— Has Pavel been a leader since childhood?
— If in sports, then at first no. When we brought him to the CSKA hockey school, he was almost the worst, he almost couldn’t skate. I went out onto the ice and could only hold on to the side. And peers flew past on skates. I immediately thought: “Dear mom! Where are we?!” But my son quickly got used to the section.

) said that Pasha has a dense build and is too heavy for this sport. In addition, hockey is a team game, and in individual competitions you have to fight with a stopwatch: psychologically it’s incredibly difficult.
The guys were terrible ringleaders! Valya is still calm, but Pasha! All the parents were afraid of him, they said: “Get this hooligan away from our children!” If they didn’t score goals as children, they cried after the match. — How did they study at school?
— Pasha had no C grades until the eighth grade. Then it got worse, when the training camp started, matches at the international level. Valya passed all the exams successfully. Pavel really liked literature, he even wanted to be a journalist. He once said that after sports he would graduate from the Faculty of Journalism and get a second education (the first was the Academy of Physical Education). True, his plans could change.
— Did you write your essays well?
— To be honest, a friend who was an excellent student wrote his essays for him. The teachers were delighted with these works, gave only A’s and did not suspect anything. But Pasha didn’t have enough time: everything was taken up by sports.
— Did Pavel have many friends?
- Very! Interestingly, they were much older than Pashka. For example, my son is only 8 years old, and suddenly the doorbell rings, and an adult guy is standing on the threshold: “Can I Pasha?” I allowed people to gather at our house; sometimes there were ten people. We talked, drank tea, played chess. Pasha loved to discuss the books he had read: he definitely needed to analyze the plot and share his opinion. Even when my sons left for America, my friends came to me out of old memory and introduced me to their brides. Everyone is great, they are settled in life. One works as a supervisor in a construction company. The other is an international hockey referee. The third is a lawyer.
— What were your children interested in?
“Pasha loved to read, he knows history from start to finish.” Valya collected stamps and loved gluing together models of airplanes and boats. He still does everything around the house himself. We recently bought furniture, and Valera shows: “You see, mom, I assembled everything myself.” A thrifty man and an ideal family man. He probably took after me. And Pasha, like his dad, won’t calm down.
HARD MONEY
— When did the sons start contributing to the family budget?
- Since I was fourteen years old. At CSKA, Pasha had a salary of 60-80 rubles a month. He became a world champion and was raised to 250. But he only took 30 rubles for himself, the rest went to the house. Valya received 120, left ten. We had a common budget, if we planned a purchase - skates for Pasha, a coat for me - we always consulted.
— Did your attitude towards money change when children started earning millions of dollars?
— They began to treat money more carefully. When we were young, we didn’t think about where everything comes from. Now Valka has her own family - three children, they want a fourth, they need to be supported. Recently, his wife Candice got ready for a concert in a new dress, and Valya threw her hands on her hips and laughed: “So, I bought something again. We’re saving money for furniture!” Pavel is generally sick, how many operations has he had! Look at your hands - all the fingers are broken. His back aches, when he goes to the theater, he can’t sit straight. The right knee does not have its own cruciate ligaments. — Do they make purchases only in expensive stores to maintain their image?
— Sons play in the NHL and are required to live up to the level. Even to a match you need to wear a good suit and tie. In Miami the heat is below 30, but no T-shirts or flip-flops. Car and house - at your own expense. They pay you a lot of money: please, provide for yourself. It happens that Lexus gives a player a car so that he can advertise the brand. But this is for rent, in a year or two they will take it away.
— Pavel earns 10 million dollars a year. Where does he invest them?
- According to the contract, ten, but five come out clean - in America the tax is 47 percent. What remains, the son invests in real estate. I bought an apartment in a new building on Komsomolsky Prospekt. A three-story palace house is being completed on Rublyovka. There's a big apartment in Miami. He lives in a rented apartment in New York and decided not to buy his own. You also need to save for a rainy day to ensure life after sports. How will it turn out there?

- No, everything was gradual. Pasha made a name when he was recognized as the best rookie in the NHL, and then off we went. How famous he was in Vancouver! — Are his fans annoying him in Russia?
- This is something incredible! That's why he took bodyguards because sometimes there is no way through. One girl even came to him from St. Petersburg and slept on the windowsill in the entrance. She said that Pasha is her destiny, she will not go anywhere, because there is no money for the return trip. Pavel offered money, but she still didn’t want to leave! Some crazy woman from Siberia sends letters: Pasha is not your child, you stole him from me. Can you imagine? But there are also many good wishes. — How did Pavel cope with the defeat from the Czechs in the finals of the 1998 Olympics?

— I went to consult a military surgeon I knew. He told Pashka to immediately leave hockey: “Does he want to remain disabled?” I tell my son: “Pasha, end your career, there’s no living place in you!” - “No, I’ll play until 2004, until the contract ends, and then I’ll see.” Recently Valya was hit on his bad leg again, he can barely walk. — Do you see Pavel in politics?
“When I ran for the Duma from the People’s Party in 1999, my son was surprised: “Mom, why do you need this?” Pasha has many acquaintances: Luzhkov, Zyuganov, Zhirinovsky, Chilingarov... But now he says that there is nothing to do in politics. Maybe with age he will change his point of view?
— Why did you need politics?
“This is an opportunity to provide real help to people.” Our party never entered the Duma, but recently I organized the “Constellation” charity foundation for the development of science, culture and sports. Svyatoslav Fedorov’s wife, my friend Irene Fedorova, has a similar fund, with whom we conduct joint events. We try to attract patrons, but for some reason some people think that the money donated to the fund will definitely be stolen. What nonsense, because we have everything in this life! Now I am helping an institute where the children of deceased employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs study. The stipend is meager, but they need to live on something! I give my own money, although I could ask my children, and they would not refuse, because they also do charity work. It was very touching when Pasha handed over envelopes with money to our veteran athletes, they almost cried: with their pension they couldn’t get that much in a year.

I said that in Los Angeles, where her home is, there are no less murders and robberies. But when Candace finally arrived, she immediately fell in love with Moscow! Valya took his wife to the “Water Stadium”, they went to the school where he studied. A sea of impressions! This summer Valera and her family are going to Moscow again.

— Will your grandchildren also be hockey players?
“I tell Valera all the time to think twice before sending his children to hockey. My son also has doubts, but recently he called: “Mom, I bought Lev a hockey stick, and he’s already running around the house with it.” - “Well, another hockey player is growing in the family!”
