Actress Daria Shcherbakova: It seems to me that I’m a real whiner

Soon the premiere of the series “Black Blood” will take place on the Ukraine channel. This is a story about two sisters who fall in love with the same man. According to the plot of the film, in the struggle for her happiness, the older sister Olga decides to take radical measures - she goes to the witch and asks for a love spell. “You will pay for your short woman’s happiness,” the sorceress Glafira warned then, “And you will settle accounts with me in such a way that you will howl with grief.” Olga didn’t believe it, but from that moment the life of this family changed forever. We visited the set of this film and talked with actress Daria Shcherbakova, who played Olga’s daughter Alena.

Dasha, tell us about your heroine. What attracted you to this role?

This role is radically different from everything I’ve played before, because most often I was cast in the roles of girls with an unfortunate fate. Here my heroine has a strong character. As the film progresses, she changes: at first she is a girl who has not yet seen life, in her head there is romance, love, in fact, I was most often cast in such roles before. At some point she becomes very open, but irritable. And then, on the contrary, she closes down, she becomes indifferent to everything, doesn’t care about anything, doesn’t need anything. The changes in a person that occur over 10 years are interesting. But the difficulty, of course, is that the scenes are filmed in random order, sometimes the final scene is filmed, and then a scene that takes place ten years earlier, then a scene that takes place five years earlier, and sometimes you get confused.

Were there scenes where you had to overcome yourself? Perhaps you had to do something for the first time?

For the first time, probably not, but every time you still try to do everything in a new, different way, not the way you did six months ago. You always want to do better, and every time you think that this time you understand much more. And regarding overcoming oneself, there were several very dramatic scenes, such as: “Wow!”, where the highest degree was needed. I thought for a long time, adjusted myself, shot many takes, but I want each next take to be no worse than the previous one, because it is unknown which one they will choose. There was one scene in which my heroine is hysterical, screaming: “Ah! I hate it! That’s it!”, and this was repeated many times... It seems like you’re not really doing it, it’s just a game, but after the sixth take I felt my leg obsessively itching: I scratched it once, a second time, something incomprehensible - it doesn’t stop, then I look, and there are blisters, hives, although I’ve never had it in my life, no matter how nervous I am. And so it turns out that you are playing for fun, and the body has been deceived.

How do you recover from such emotionally intense scenes?

I don’t need a lot of time, I’m just a little tired mentally. Precisely from being under stress for a long time. Personally, I can’t get away from constantly evaluating myself: “Oh, I didn’t do this very well, but this is pretty tolerable.”

Probably watch all the films with your participation.

Yes I am watching. Some people can’t look at themselves, but I do. Sometimes it’s disgusting, sometimes it’s pleasant, it happens in different ways. In general, I think that you need to watch, because you draw some conclusions for yourself: what you did well and what you did poorly. And in general, I am very grateful to this role for the fact that I could try myself in a variety of situations.

Do you think you have any similarities with your heroine?

Well, first of all, I drink... (Laughs) Just kidding, I have difficulties in this regard. It’s hard for me to play when I’m drunk; I probably don’t drink enough. I once noticed that those who drink a little in their dressing room at the theater, then play drunk perfectly well. Simply brilliant, in my opinion. But it’s difficult for me. And my mother also told me that I am a strong person. Although I don't feel it, I actually feel like I'm a real whiner. I probably wouldn’t have been able to go through as much as my heroine Alena went through.

"Ivan groznyj"

In 2009, Daria Shcherbakova made her debut in the serial historical film “Ivan the Terrible”.

The director of the film, Andrei Eshpai, said: “I immediately consciously made sure that the faces were mostly unknown. I wanted to create a space in which we would not read familiar features in combination with makeup. I’m glad that I have “natural” faces in the frame, which we do not correlate with modern space and therefore can be perceived as a face from there.” As a result, the role of Ivan the Terrible was played by Alexander Demidov, the king in his youth was played by Ivan Makarevich, the son of the leader of the Time Machine group Andrei Makarevich. And student Daria Shcherbakova got the role of young Marfa Sobakina, the tsar’s third wife.

Daria Shcherbakova in the film "Godmother"

At the beginning of May 2020, viewers of the main Russian channel were able to see Dasha in the musical mini-series “Never Say Never.” And although the surname of the heroine is Dasha Bulatova, you can easily recognize her as the singer Tatyana Bulanova, whose star rose to the musical Olympus in the difficult for many, but bright and eventful 90s.

Well, Daria, by her own admission, after working on the series, fell in love with the singer’s work, although she had not previously had warm feelings for it.
