Living organisms, as we know, can exist in the most incredible, simply terrifying conditions: deep-sea fish are flattened by terrible pressure at the bottom of the deepest ocean trenches; bacteria and other prokaryotes live in volcanic vents; some human individuals manage to survive outside the Moscow Ring Road. When residents of the capital learn about the existence of intelligent fauna in the provinces, they begin to get very worried, babble something about the Red Book, and the most creative ones are even able to film good TV series about this. This is what director Tigran Keosayan did, for example, who filmed the series “Actress” based on a script written by his good friend Margarita Simonyan. Provincial Russian town of Vyshegodsk. Evgenia Krymova (Katerina Shpitsa) comes here. Now she is a famous actress, TV series star. She once worked in a local theater and was married to police officer Anatoly Bodrov (Vladimir Kapustin). But several years ago, an ambitious lady who was confident in her own talent moved to the capital. Now she lives with a famous director (Tigran Keosayan), and her ex is raising their son Artemka alone. The city is restless: from time to time people are found hanged (hanged?) here. Anatoly’s colleague Vasily (Yuri Stoyanov) cannot put forward a single plausible version about this. After a banquet given in her honor by former colleagues (a terrarium of like-minded people - this is how Yuri Stoyanov’s hero characterizes the local theater community), Krymova goes alone to the hotel. It starts to rain. In general, as they say, if you’re unlucky, you won’t be so lucky. Not only do the inhabitants of Vyshegodsk not live in Moscow, but it almost constantly rains here, like in some Macondo. It is not surprising that in the morning the lifeless body of Evgenia Krymova is discovered in the city cemetery. Anatoly (who would doubt it) takes on the investigation of this case. He creates a sprawling version tree and gets to work. His faithful friend Vasily plays the role of Doctor Watson with him. Anatoly patiently explains to a colleague of the same rank as him the course of his reasoning for the dull viewers. Vasily, of course (this is Stoyanov himself!) periodically gives his friend remarks worthy of the best episodes of the legendary “Town”. The authors of the series carefully decorate the detective branches of the plot with leaves of matrimonial episodes. Around an unmarried, absolutely positive, prominent man, naturally, there is a flock of lonely ladies who are eager to feed Anatoly pies and help Artemka do her Russian homework. But numerous flashbacks show us that Anatoly loves his actress so much that he would not trade her for any pies. The authors of the series managed to create a quality product. Moreover, the skilled team assembled by Keosayan (we are talking not only about the cast, but also about the film crew) was not afraid, in the seemingly lightweight format of the series, to take on a task that can rarely be solved in a “big” movie. “The Actress” is a wonderful symbiosis of light noir with an ironic detective story. Vyshegodsk is simply an archetype of that very province from where all living things crawl, fly away, and fly away to the capital cities. Terrible, shabby entrances, apartments, offices; electricity is constantly cut off; you have to bring decent cognac with you from Moscow, and the locals then finish it and rejoice; grown women go on a date, adorning themselves with vulgar makeup and wearing a tacky hoodie with black leggings. People here drink to excess, and then the police wonder whether there is collective depression along with collective psychosis. I have already mentioned the constant rains. Typical village of Gadyukino. I sincerely hope that this is still stylization with elements of subtle banter. Well, Stoyanov and Menshov play there, they will correct their colleagues if anything happens! And family traditions will not allow Keosayan Jr. to go against his taste. I don’t know what played a decisive role here, but the filmmakers manage to season the frank tensions with the escalation of provincial horrors with such a well-calibrated dose of simple, but always very appropriate, humor that the series is watched with great pleasure. And if you consider that the camera team is performing spectacularly as if they were filming a festival arthouse, we can congratulate Tigran Keosayan and his team on a real creative success. The story of what happened to the little thing from the capital, who wanted to return to her town, will be remembered by many fans of the series. In terms of its level, “Actress” compares favorably with the average product in its segment.
