Now we know for sure that there will be a spin-off based on the most famous TV series of our time! HBO has ordered the first season of the prequel. Or rather, the pilot episode. In the USA, this is exactly how the production of a series is structured - first they order a pilot, then it is filmed, reviewed and, if it passes all the authorities, the series is given the green light.
The popularity of Game of Thrones is so enormous that we can say that all stages have already been passed. After all, George Martin himself is responsible for the script. His co-author is Jane Goldman (Stardust, Kick-Ass, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children). She will also be the showrunner of the future saga.
Deadline.com reports that the script has already been completed and the pilot has been sent to production.
The prequel is described as "the terrifying secrets of Westeros history, the origins of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East, the legends of the Starks."
By the way, the series from Martin and Goldman is just one of the five spin-offs that HBO promised to show in the future a year ago. The first one went!
Series budget
Francesca Orsi (responsible for TV series at HBO) revealed details of the preparation of future spin-offs of the fantasy TV series. It turned out (luckily for fans), HBO is determined and will not save money.
“$50 million for a season will definitely not be enough to realize our plans. We're playing big. The franchise must be further developed. To do otherwise would be to commit something like a malfeasance,” Orsi said.
Filming start date
First, the news spread all over the world that filming of the prequel would begin in the fall of 2020. But later the director of HBO denied this information, saying that the work process will begin only at the beginning of 2019.
The pilot episode of the first spin-off of the cult TV show will be directed by S. J. Clarkson. The development is being led by screenwriter Jane Goldman, who has been appointed showrunner of the series, and Martin himself as executive producer and co-creator of the story.
The premiere can be expected no earlier than April 2020.
