Andrey Smolyakov: Human passions are a very seductive thing

Biography

Andrei Smolyakov's family was far from art.
His father is a fireman, his mother is a physics and mathematics teacher. He spent almost all his free time as a child at his father's fire station. The ground floor housed a garage for cars, and the families of firefighters lived on the second floor. The favorite pastime of Andrei and his friends was to wait for their fathers to return from their trip and wash the car with a fire hose. However, he did not intend to follow in his father’s footsteps: his main dream was to become a neurosurgeon. For a long time, Andrei even attended the specialized club “Young Doctor”. But plans to enter medical school were dashed by one newspaper article, which talked about the beginning of enrollment of students at the theater school. Andrey decided to try his hand at the entrance exams. Despite the fact that by this time Smolyakov had never been to a drama theater in his life, he passed the test with honor, and in 1975 he was enrolled in the Theater School. B. Shchukina. After the third year he transferred to GITIS. The reason for this decision was the young actor’s great desire to work with the recognized master of Soviet cinema - Oleg Tabakov, who just taught at GITIS. Thus, in 1978, Smolyakov became a student in Oleg Tabakov’s workshop.
