Jaromir Jagr
(Czech: Jaromír Jágr; February 15, 1972, Kladno, Czechoslovakia) is a Czech professional ice hockey player who plays as a winger for the Rytirí Kladno club, which he has owned since the summer of 2011[3]. It ranks second in NHL regular season points[4][5] and fifth in Stanley Cup playoff points[6]. In terms of goals in the NHL championships, he ranks third, while being the most productive among Europeans in the entire history of the NHL in terms of goals, points, assists both in the regular season[7] and in the playoffs[8]. He won the Stanley Cup twice with the Pittsburgh Penguins (1991, 1992). With the Czech national team he became an Olympic champion (1998) and twice world champion (2005, 2010). Member of the Triple Gold Club.
In total, during his career in the national team and clubs, he played 2494 games, scored 2684 points (1084 goals and 1600 assists)[9]. In terms of the number of goals scored in official matches, he ranks 2nd in the history of hockey, second only to Wayne Gretzky (1098 goals)[10].
Career[ | ]
Home[ | ]
Jaromir first picked up a hockey stick in 1976, when he was 4 years old. 16-year-old Jagr spent his first season in 1988 at HC Kladno, scoring 8 goals and making 10 assists in 39 matches. The following season, he became one of the team leaders, scoring 60 points (30 goals and 30 assists) in 51 games. Such a bright game attracted the attention of the Czechoslovakian national team coaches and he was invited to the 1990 World Cup.
NHL[ | ]
At the 1990 NHL draft, he was selected in the 1st round, 5th overall, by the Pittsburgh Penguins, whose leader was Mario Lemieux. He played in the National Hockey League from 1990 to 2018. Result in the first season: regular season - 80 matches, 27 goals, 30 assists; playoffs: 24 matches, 3 goals, 10 assists. In the second season he showed more outstanding results: regular season - 70 matches, 32 goals, 37 assists; playoffs: 21 matches, 11 goals, 13 assists. Following his first two seasons in the NHL, Jagr won the Stanley Cup both times: in 1991 and 1992.
After that, Jagr no longer won team trophies with the Penguins, but he became the top scorer of the NHL regular season five times - he was awarded the Art Ross Trophy in 1995, 1998-2001. He also made history as the first European to receive this prize. In addition to the Art Ross Trophy, while playing for Pittsburgh, Jagr also won two Lester Pearson Awards (a prize for the best hockey player of the season based on the voting results of the players’ union), and also won one Hart Trophy (a prize for the most valuable hockey player of the season) . On April 18, 1999, Jagr scored the winning goal in overtime in a game against the New York Rangers, which became the farewell goal in the career of the leading scorer in NHL history, Wayne Gretzky.[11] On December 30, 1999, in a game against the New York Islanders, Jagr set his personal single-game scoring record with 7 points (3 goals and 4 assists).[12]
On July 11, 2001, along with Frantisek Kucera, he was traded to the Washington Capitals for Chris Beach, Michal Siwek and Ross Lupaszuk[13]. While playing for Washington, Jagr matched his personal single-game scoring record on January 11, 2003, scoring 7 points (3 goals and 4 assists) in a 12-2 win over Florida. Moreover, by decision of coach Bruce Cassidy, Jagr did not take part in the 3rd period, when the score was already devastating[14].
On January 23, 2004, he was traded to the New York Rangers for Anson Carter.[15] Jagr's most successful season with the Rangers was the 2005/2006 season, following which he won the Leicester Pearson Award for the third time. In 82 matches, he scored 123 points (54 goals and 69 assists). After three successful seasons in which the Rangers always made the playoffs, Jagr left New York at the end of his contract.
Super League and KHL[ | ]
Jaromir Jagr spent four seasons in the Omsk HC Avangard.
During the NHL lockout in the 2004/2005 season, he played in the Russian Super League for the Omsk Avangard. In January, he won the European Cup with the club, scoring a “golden” goal in overtime against Kärpät[16].
On July 4, 2008, he signed a full-fledged contract with the “hawks” under the “2+1” system[17]. In 2009 and 2010, he became the club's best sniper and top scorer, losing this title to line partner Roman Cervenka in 2011.[18][19] On January 28, 2011, in a match with Barys, Jagr scored his 200th and 201st points for Avangard. At that time, Jaromir played 205 games, 88 goals (including two hat-tricks) and 113 assists[20].
Over all four seasons spent at Avangard, Jagr scored 93 goals and took fifth place in the list of “Best Avangard snipers in the top division”[21]. In 2011, Jagr helped Avangard win the Continental Cup, a trophy for winning the KHL regular season.
Return to the NHL[ | ]
Jaromir Jagr with the Philadelphia Flyers in 2011
After his contract with Avangard ended in 2011, Jagr took a long break in search of continuing his career. Although Yagr was offered a contract extension in Omsk, there were rumors about the player’s desire to return to the NHL. Interest in the player was confirmed by the hockey player’s “native” club, the Pittsburgh Penguins, which offered $2 million per season. Unexpectedly for many, on July 1, 2011, Jagr signed an agreement with another club from Pennsylvania, the Penguins’ principal rival, the Philadelphia Flyers. Jagr’s agent, Petr Svoboda, played for five seasons at this club as a defender[22]. The contract amount was $3.3 million, the contract period was one season[23]. The KHL wished Jaromir success in his new club and thanked him “for his excellent play and promotion of hockey in the KHL space during the three years that he played for the Avangard team[24].
In the offseason, Jagr signed a one-year contract with the Dallas Stars for $4.55 million.[25] On March 30, 2013, Jagr scored the 1,000th assist of his NHL career. “Dallas” beat “Minnesota” with a score of 5:3, the puck, scored on the power play by Jamie Benn, turned out to be the game-winner[26]. However, Jagr did not stay long in Dallas. On April 2, he was traded to the Boston Bruins for Lane McDiarmid, Cody Payne, and a second-round draft pick in the 2013 NBA Draft (or first-round if Boston reached the Stanley Cup semifinals in 2013). Interestingly, both McDermid and Jagr (Payne has not yet made his NHL debut) scored a goal each in their debut matches for their new teams. True, Jagr's goal in the game against New Jersey turned out to be the winning one[28], but McDiarmid's goal only sweetened the pill of Dallas' defeat to the Anaheim Ducks[29]. Boston reached the Stanley Cup final, where it lost to the Chicago Blackhawks, and Jaromir failed to score a single goal in the playoffs only 2 times in his career.
Having become an unrestricted free agent, Jaromir Jagr signed a one-year contract with the New Jersey Devils in July 2013.[30] While playing for New Jersey, Jagr continued his rise as one of the most successful players in NHL history. On December 19, 2013, he broke Gordie Howe's record for game-winning goals; the goal against Ottawa became the 122nd victory of Jaromir's career.[31] In addition, Jagr passed Steve Yzerman and moved into 8th place on the list of the best snipers in the NHL[32]. On January 8, 2014, with an assist in a game against Philadelphia, Jagr equaled Mario Lemieux in the number of points scored[33]. On January 14, in a game with Montreal, Jagr scored his 695th goal and took 7th place among snipers, ahead of Mark Messier[34]. On January 26, in a game with the Rangers, Jagr gave two assists and moved into tenth place on the list of the best assists in NHL history, overtaking Mario Lemieux[35].
On March 1, 2014, in a game against the Islanders, Jagr scored his 700th goal. He became the seventh player in league history to reach this mark, following Wayne Gretzky, Gordie Howe, Phil Esposito, Brett Hull, Marcel Dionne and Mike Gartner.[36] At the end of the season, Jaromir extended his contract with the Devils[37].
Jagr with the Florida Panthers in 2020
On February 26, 2020, the 43-year-old hockey player was traded to the Florida Panthers[38]. In his second game with Florida on March 1, Jagr scored the 717th goal of his career. As a result, he tied Esposito for fifth place on the NHL's all-time scoring list.[39] On March 19, in a match with Detroit, Jagr scored his 718th goal and moved into fifth place in goals[40]. On April 2, Jaromir scored 2 (1+1) points in a match with Carolina, reaching 1798 career points (721+1077) and sharing fourth place with his former teammate Ron Francis in the list of top scorers[41]. On April 9, Jagr made two assists in a match against the Boston Bruins and moved into clear fourth place among scorers with 1,800 points. He also tied Adam Oates for the most assists and tied for sixth on the league's all-time assists list.[42] In general, following the results of the 2014-15 season, it became clear that Jagr fit well into the Florida lineup. Playing on a first line with young Jonathan Huberdeau and Aleksandr Barkov, he scored 18 points in 20 games this season (compared to 29 points in 57 games for New Jersey). On April 12, 2020, Jaromir signed a new one-year contract with the club[43].
On December 20, 2020, having scored his 732nd goal in the NHL regular season, Jaromir Jagr passed Marcel Dionne and moved into clear 4th place on the list of the best snipers in NHL history[44]. In addition, Jagr became the fourth hockey player in NHL history to score at least 10 goals in 22 consecutive seasons. Previously, this was achieved by Mark Messier, Ron Francis and Dave Andreychuk[45]. On February 20, 2020, having scored 742 goals in the NHL regular season, Jaromir surpassed Brett Hull and took 3rd place on the list of the best snipers in NHL history. On March 7, 2020, having scored his 1,851st point in the NHL regular season, he moved into third place on the all-time scoring list, surpassing Gordie Howe.
On May 5, 2020, he extended his contract with Florida for a period of 1 year.[46] On June 22, 2020, in Las Vegas, at the NHL awards ceremony for the season, Jagr won the Bill Masterton Trophy, a prize awarded for loyalty to hockey[47]. He was unable to attend the ceremony due to his father's illness.[48]
On October 20, 2020, Jaromir Jagr scored an effective shot in the NHL regular season match against the Washington Capitals, which became the 750th in his career for the 44-year-old Czech. Before Jagr, only Gordie Howe and Wayne Gretzky had achieved such an achievement[49]. Two months later, on December 20, 2020, Jagr made 3 assists in a game with Buffalo, scored his 1887th point (755+1132) and took second place in points in the NHL regular championship, catching up with Mark Messier[4], and On December 22, thanks to an assist in a match against the Boston Bruins, he moved into clear second place in the list of top scorers.[50] On February 15, 2020, he scored 1900 points in the NHL regular championships.
On October 4, 2020, he signed a one-year contract with the Calgary Flames.[51] On November 9, he scored the first goal for the new club in a home match against Detroit.[52]. Also in this game, Jagr made an assist and was named the first star of the match.[53] On December 29, 2020, in a match against San Jose, he caught up with Ron Francis in the number of matches in the NHL regular championships. On December 30, 2017, he took third place in games played in the NHL regular championships.
Return to the Czech Republic[ | ]
On January 29, 2020, he announced his transfer to his home team “Rytir Kladno”, playing in the first Czech league.[54] Jagr's first game against Benatky nad Jizerou, which took place on February 3, was notable because of the duel between Jagr and Petr Nedved, who resumed his career for one game specifically for this match. Kladno won with a score of 7:2, Jagr made 3 assists, and Nedved scored a goal and provided an assist[55]. On February 17, in the 5th match after returning against Gaviřov, Jagr suffered a knee injury after a hard force move by striker Marek Sikora[56]. Since according to the rules of the Czech league, you need to play a minimum of 15 games in order to take part in the transition tournament for the right to enter the Extraliga, Jagr went on the ice 10 times for one shift at the very beginning of the match in order to get the opportunity to play in the transition tournament subject to recovery from injury [57]. Having never recovered from his injury, Jagr was unable to help Kladno get into the Extraliga.
Seven career development options for the legendary Czech.
45 years has long been retirement age for hockey players.
But not for Jaromir Jagr, who will not soon get tired of rocking the ice rinks. However, NHL club managers are subtly hinting to him that it’s time to stop. Florida thanked Jagr for his invaluable help, but did not renew the contract, and no one else has declared any interest in the player. NHL

Team[ | ]
Czechoslovakia national team[ | ]
Jagr, being one of the brightest young hockey players in Czechoslovakia, took part in the 1989 European Junior Championships. Having scored 7 goals and given 5 assists in 5 games, he became the silver medalist of the tournament. At the 1990 World Youth Championship, Jagr became a bronze medalist, joining the symbolic team and becoming the best assistant of the tournament, scoring 21 points (8 goals + 13 assists) in 7 matches.
After a very successful 1989/1990 season, when the 18-year-old Jagr scored 30 goals in 51 matches in the Czechoslovak league, he took part in the 1990 World Cup as part of the main Czechoslovakian national team, winning a bronze medal. Jagr's last tournament for the Czechoslovakian national team was the 1991 Canada Cup.
In total, Jagr played 26 games for the Czechoslovakian national team and scored 8 points (6 goals and 2 assists).
Czech national team[ | ]
After the collapse of Czechoslovakia, Jagr regularly played for the Czech national team at major international tournaments. The 1994 World Cup and the 1996 World Cup were unsuccessful. But in 1998, Jagr, as part of the Czech national team, won gold medals at the 1998 Olympic Games, beating the Russian team in the final with a score of 1:0. This tournament was the first time NHL hockey players took part in the Olympics.
After the victory in Nagano, Jagr played very effectively at the 2002 and 2004 World Championships, but each time the Czech team, taking 1st place in the group at the preliminary tournament, lost to their opponents in the 1/4 finals. In the fall of 2004, Jagr and the Czech national team reached the semi-finals of the 2004 World Cup, losing to Canada in overtime with a score of 3:4. After the end of the 2004/2005 lockout season, which Jagr spent in Europe, he took part in the 2005 World Cup in Austria. In the second game of the group stage against Germany, Jagr broke his little finger after being hit in the arm by a stick from defender Stefan Schauer[58]. After missing one game, he took part in all the remaining matches and helped the Czech team become world champions, beating Canada in the final with a score of 3:0. Jagr himself entered the symbolic team of the tournament and became a member of the “Triple Gold Club”.
A year later, at the 2006 Olympics, Jagr won his second Olympic medal, becoming a bronze medalist. At the next major tournaments, the 2009 World Cup and the 2010 Olympic Games, Jagr and the national team lost in the 1/4 finals to the teams of Sweden and Finland, respectively. But then another success came for Jagr with the Czech national team; at the 2010 World Championships in Germany, Jagr became the world champion for the second time, beating the Russian team in the final with a score of 2:1.
A year later, at the 2011 World Championships in Slovakia, Jagr became a bronze medalist, joining the symbolic team and becoming the best striker of the tournament. In the quarterfinals with the US team, which the Czechs won 4:0, Jagr scored his first hat-trick in the national team[59]. The next two tournaments, the World Championships and the 2014 Olympic Games, turned out to be medalless for Jagr and the Czech team. Jagr's last tournament with the Czech national team was the 2015 home World Cup. Although the Czechs took 4th place and were not among the top three, Jagr himself became one of the heroes of the tournament. In the quarterfinals with the Finnish national team, which the Czechs won 5:3, Jagr scored 2 goals, including the winning one with the score 3:3 in the 3rd period. At the end of the tournament, he was recognized as the most valuable hockey player and entered the symbolic team.
In total, Jagr played 129 games for the Czech national team and scored 117 points (49 goals and 68 assists).
Star Trek of hockey player Jaromir Jagr
In his first season in the National Hockey League, our today's hero managed to win one of the main trophies of the hockey world - the Stanley Cup.
Jaromir Jagr received the honor of raising the main NHL trophy over his head at the end of the next season. Subsequently, despite his confident play, the Czech striker never won this trophy again, but became the best sniper five times in the regular season. Subsequently, our today's hero continued to perform brilliantly as part of other clubs. “Washington Capitals”, “New York Rangers”, “Philadelphia Flyers”, Omsk “Avangard” - in each of these teams Jaromir Jagr achieved very good results. His trophies include a Hart Trophy and three Ted Lindsay Awards. In addition, during his performances in the NHL, our today’s hero was included in the symbolic team ten times for the All-Star match of the championship. Jaromir Jagr also played in the All-Star game of the Kontinental Hockey League three times.
Jaromir Jagr The talented striker also played many brilliant matches as part of the Czech Republic (and Czechoslovakia) national team. His awards include gold at the Nagano Olympics, as well as two sets of gold medals won at the Austrian and German World Championships. For most of his career, Jaromir Jagr was captain and also one of the most exciting players in his national team.
A lot of goals scored, as well as the highest level of professionalism, made the hockey player a national hero of his country. At the 2010 Winter Olympics, the player was given the high honor of carrying the Czech national flag at the opening ceremony of the competition. In addition, in the fall of the same year, the talented athlete was awarded one of the most honorable state orders of this country - the Order of Merit. The President of the Czech Republic, Vaclav Klaus, personally decided to present the award to the hockey player, who has become a model of behavior on the hockey rink for many years.
It is quite remarkable that throughout his career, our today's hero wore a game jersey with the number “68” as a sign of solidarity with the victims of the Prague Spring. Because of this, the player was often wrongly accused of hating Russians. However, in one of his interviews, the hockey player dispelled these myths, saying that he does not hate Russians, but communists.
Off the ice[ | ]
Jaromir Jagr converted to Orthodoxy, according to some sources, back in 2001 in Prague[60], according to others - in 2005 during the NHL lockout in Omsk.[61]
On October 28, 2010, as part of the Independence Day celebrations, Czech President Vaclav Klaus awarded Jagr the Medal of Merit, 2nd class. Previously, only three Czech hockey players had received this award: Augustin Bubnik, Ivan Hlinka and Dominik Hasek.[62]
In 2010, he became one of the largest donors to the Czech Civic Democratic Party, donating 5.6 million crowns (about 280 thousand dollars).[63]

Second coming
On July 4, one of the best players in the history of world hockey, Jaromir Jagr, signed a contract with Avangard. The Czech striker already played for the Omsk club in the 2004/05 season, and then his game became one of the main decorations of the Super League championship. Jagr's second coming to Russia coincided with the formation of a new league (KHL). Jaromir will certainly become her decoration.
For the last five years, the rights to Jagr belonged to the NHL club New York Rangers, but on June 30, 2008, the hockey player’s contract expired and was not renewed. Rangers general manager Glen Sather described the negotiations this way: "He told me he wanted to play here, I told him we wanted him to play here, his agent told me he wanted to play here, I talked to his agent." several times, but we never got to the point where he said, “If you give me a certain amount of dollars, I’ll stay in New York.”
According to Sater, he eventually got tired of "negotiating with himself" and decided to part ways with Jagr. The general manager of the Rangers suggested that the hockey player would continue his career in Russia, and on July 4, a message appeared on the official Avangard website about signing a contract with Jagr under the “two plus one” scheme. The point is that after two years of playing for Avangard, the player, subject to “non-resistance of the parties,” will be able to extend the agreement for another year.

The main argument of people who are skeptical about Jagr's transfer to Avangard is the age of the hockey player. He turned 36 on February 15th of this year and has suffered enough injuries throughout his career that any serious injury could end his career. However, so far neither injuries nor opponents have prevented Jagr from being one of the brightest stars in world hockey.
Every hockey fan who follows this sport more or less closely has his own vivid memories associated with Jagr’s game. Your author remembers very vaguely how Jaromir won his two Stanley Cups with Pittsburgh and Mario Lemieux, although he remembers something. When I was a child, NHL hockey was shown on Russian television from time to time, and one such case occurred during a match in one of the final series. Jagr was no worse than Lemieux then.
In 1998, at the Winter Olympics in Nagano, everyone admired the game of Pavel Bure, but Jagr, although he scored only one goal in the tournament, determined the game of the Czech team even more than Bure determined the game of the Russian team. In the final match, shown on Russian TV in a recording, Pavel and his partners were unable to break through Hasek, and the Czechs only needed one goal from defenseman Petr Svoboda to win.

In the 2004/05 season, there was a lockout in the NHL, and Jagr first played 17 games for the Czech Kladno, where he once began his career. Newspapers wrote that Jaromir played for this team almost without a contract and almost for food, but this did not last long. In November 2004, the striker signed a contract with Avangard Omsk and conquered Russia in a few matches.
That season I was lucky enough to attend the CSKA - Avangard match, when the Omsk team won either 5:4 or 6:5, and Jagr scored three goals. First, he rolled out from behind the goal in one movement, and with the second he drove the puck into the near corner. Then he shot into the top nine from the blue line, and ended up taking the penalty, leaving no chance for Alexander Fomichev.
In the quarter finals of the playoffs, Avangard played Magnitogorsk Metallurg, and in overtime of the decisive fifth match, Jagr scored the winning goal. Having “removed” the defender, Jaromir beat the goalkeeper with an elegant and sharp feint and rolled the puck into an empty corner. Avangard then stopped at the semi-final stage, losing to the future champion Dynamo, but even Dynamo fans recognized Jagr’s individual superiority over all other super league hockey players.

At the 2006 Olympics, the striker said goodbye to the Czech national team and helped his team win bronze medals. The most memorable episode was when the Finn Jarkko Ruutu used such a forceful move against Jagr that the Czech almost became fused with the boards. Jaromir received a serious cut, staining his sweater and ice with his blood, but was soon back in action.
As for individual trophies, Jagr, if he wanted, could put together a collection of them that could fill the floor of one of the largest museums in the world. The forward became the NHL's top scorer five times, played in the All-Star Game six times, and his Golden Sticks, awarded annually to the best hockey players in the Czech Republic, would be enough to support a third of any hockey team. The fact that Jagr was voted the NHL's Most Valuable Player only once seems like a misunderstanding.
In the 2008/09 season, Jaromir will again play in Russia. Fans of Kazan's Ak Bars should be the first to see it, the away match against which (September 3) will be Avangard's first in the Kontinental Hockey League championship. The organizers of the new tournament received such a star, which is rare even in the NHL.

Memory card. Jaromir Jagr
Jaromir Jagr was born on February 15, 1972 in the city of Kladno (Czech Republic).
He is a product of the team from his hometown. At the age of 16 he began playing for the adult team in the Czechoslovakian league.
He had a great last season in his homeland, becoming the 7th scorer and 3rd assistant in the championship.
The 1990 draft was one of the best in the context of representatives of the Czech Republic - 2 people made it into the top 5.
But the first Czech chosen in that draft was not Jagr, but Petr Nedved (2nd pick, Vancouver).
But Pittsburgh grabbed Jaromir, choosing him with the 5th pick.
In general, Jagr was considered the best from that draft, but due to his communist origin, those who selected him previously rejected him.
Pittsburgh did everything possible to ensure that the 18-year-old talent got used to a foreign country and the league as quickly as possible. A month before the start of the training camp, they hired him an English tutor and found a Czech family in the city where he first lived. Well, they traded a compatriot from Calgary, Jiri Hrdina.
It should be noted that Jagr was lucky with the team - Stevens, Recchi, Trottier, Coffey, Barrasso and of course Lemieux (and this is not counting the fact that Murphy and Francis will join the campaign this season). Such a reputable company had its sights set on the Stanley Cup.
In his debut match, Jagr scored no points, but in the next game against New Jersey he scored his first goal.
But he finished his first season in the NHL with 57 points (27+30) in 80 matches.
In the poll for the title of "best rookie" (Calder Trophy), Jagr was 6th.
But then there were the playoffs, where the Penguins beat everyone to win their first Stanley Cup . Jagr became one of the youngest KS owners - 19 years, 3 months and 10 days! Yes, the Czech’s contribution was not decisive (9th sniper and 8th scorer on the team) and he scored only 1 winning goal, but in the most difficult series - against New Jersey (7 matches). It is also worth noting that Jagr is one of the first Czechs to win the CS.
In the fall of the same year, Jagr took part in the Canada Cup.
The Czechoslovakians took last place, but nevertheless managed to annoy their principal rival - they defeated the USSR national team.
Jagr scored 1 point (puck) in 5 matches at the tournament.
This was the last tournament in the form of the Czechoslovakian national team.
In his second season, he made his debut at the All-Star Game.
In general, Jagr was a frequent visitor to the Moscow Helicopter Plant - 13 times . This is a record not only among Czechs, but also among all Europeans in general.
In addition, he is one of the oldest participants in the cost center in history - at the cost center 2020 he was almost 44!
But in the playoffs, Pittsburgh was again unstoppable, winning the 2nd CS in a row . Unlike the first championship, the second required more effort from Jagr and his teammates, because the main “star” of the club, Marie Lemieux, missed 6 games. At the end of the playoffs, Jagr had an impressive line of indicators - 2nd in the club in winning goals, 3rd in goals and 4th in points. Scored the winning goal in Game 7 against Washington.
In the next 2 seasons (1992/1993 and 1993/1994) he was close to the elite scoring mark of 100 points, but fell a little short - he scored 94 and 99 points, respectively.
But the playoffs were no longer so good - 2nd round in 1993 and 1st round in 1994.
During the 1994/1995 lockout, in order not to lose tone, I played in Europe. First in his native Kladno, and then in the exotic Italian championship - for Bolzano.
Pittsburgh was left without Lemieux for the 1994-1995 season, so No. 68 had a chance to emerge from the shadows to a new level.
And he proved himself by winning the Art Ross Trophy . Became the first European to win the scoring race. To this day, Jagr remains the only Czech to take the Art Ross.
Jagr also claimed the Hart Trophy, but finished 2nd, losing to Eric Lindros.
The 1995/1996 season was statistically the best in the Czech’s career. He set personal bests for goals (62), assists (87) and points (149). In the future, he will never be able to surpass these numbers.
True, his teammate Lemieux made the Czech season less outstanding - 69 goals and 161 points. Nevertheless, 147 points is still a record for Europeans and right forwards. In addition, he became the first Czech to score 100 points in a season, and he remains the only one to this day.
In the 1996 playoffs, the Penguins reached the conference finals for the first time in 4 years. It seemed like there was every chance of aiming for 3 KS, especially since the “Eastern final” featured quite mediocre Florida.
On paper it was mediocre, but in fact the Panthers were stronger 4-3.
Every team has a tournament(s) that you don’t really want to remember. For Russia this is the home World Cup 2000, but for the Czech Republic it is the 1996 World Cup . The Czech national team, led by Jagr, lost all 3 matches with a difference of 4-17. Well, okay, lose to Sweden and Finland, but lose to Germany 1-7! Well, this is also the worst international tournament for Jagr - only 1 point (puck) in 3 games.
The 1996/1997 season turned out to be blurred due to injury, as a result the 2nd “hundred” in his career fell through (he scored 95 points in 63 matches).
In the summer of 1997, “SuperMario” ended his brilliant career, transferring leadership and captaincy to the Czech.
He had a great season 1997/1998 - scoring 102 points, his 2nd Art Ross Trophy . Moreover, that season was the only one to reach the “hundred”.
In addition, he received his 2nd nomination for Hart, but lost again - Hasek won.
In 1998 he made his debut at the Olympic Games in Nagano. The chances of the Czechs, despite the presence of 2 “superstars” (Jagr and Hasek), were not very high, especially against the background of the main favorites - the Swedes, Americans and Canadians. But the Czechs took and won the first gold (including Czechoslovakia) . In that victory, Jagr remained “in the shadow” of Hasek, which is generally logical considering the number of goals that the Czechs scored and missed in the semifinals and finals. But Jagr became the team’s top scorer (1+4).
The 1998/1999 season was the best in the Czech’s career in terms of significance, and everything was fine with the numbers. Having scored 127 points, he won his 3rd Art Ross Trophy , bringing his closest pursuer Teemu Selanne 20 points! In terms of Hart , Jagr was not very lucky; he was nominated 6 times (!) during his career and only won once. And this “one day” happened just this season. And he did it convincingly, gaining almost 100% of the votes (96%) - out of 56 journalists, 51 gave him 1st place! Well, for the first time in his career he won the Leicester Pearson Award (“best according to hockey players”).
In the 1999/2000 season, despite missing 19 matches, he took his 4th Art Ross Trophy . He is also recognized as the best by hockey players ( Lester Pearson Award ). But he will lose to Hart in a dramatic fight to Chris Pronger, who is only 1 vote ahead of him!
The 2000-2001 season was the last in Pittsburgh. Moreover, he spent it with Lemieux, who decided to resume his career.
At the end of December, he becomes the 3rd European in history (after Kurri and Stastny) to score 1,000 points in the NHL. Well, of course, the 1st Czech. At the moment, besides Jagr, only Patrik Elias has achieved the thousand-point mark. (Stastny Slovak!).
But then he beat not only Lemieux, but many others, and to be more precise, he won his 5th and last Art Ross Trophy . Only Gordie Howe (6) and Wayne Gretzky took more Art Ross than him.
In addition, Jagr scored his 4th hundred (121 points).
When speaking “Russian NHL team,” Detroit of the 90s with the Russian five comes to mind. The Czechs also have their own analogue - Pittsburgh in the late 90s and early 2000s. The peak came in the 2000/2001 season, when in addition to Jagr, the team had 11 more Czechs, including the head coach (Ivan Hlinka).
At the turn of the millennium, the “penguins” had big financial problems because of which they had to exchange the “star Czech” to Washington . The compensation turned out to be so-so (Chris Beach, Michal Sivek and Ross Lapuschuk), but in fact, what difference does it make considering what subsequently happened to the team. But the Czech himself signed a record contract (at that time) in the history of the NHL - 77 million for 7 years! True, the record lasted only a couple of months - in September Yashin will sign a contract with the Islanders for 87.5 million (for 10 years). That Jagr contract is still a record for Czech hockey players in the NHL.
Washington had high hopes for signing the era-defining scorer (“It’s like getting Michael Jordan,” said club owner Ted Leonsis). But in fact, signing the Czech did not bring the club closer to the Stanley Cup. And for the forward himself, this period is more significant only in financial terms. In particular, in the first season for the new club, his impressive streak of 4 Art Ross Trophies in a row was interrupted and for the first time in his career he was left without the playoffs.
The fiasco on the international stage further worsened the impression of the season. The Czechs came to the Olympics in Salt Lake City as defending champions and had a very good chance of a successful performance. But in the end, the 1/4 match with Russia became fatal, losing with a mirror score like 4 years ago in the final (0-1). But Jagr himself with 5 points (2+3) became the top scorer of his team.
The second season for Washington turned out even worse in individual terms - for the first time in 10 years (since the 1992/1993 season) Jagr did not make it into the top 10 best scorers of the season. But there is something to remember - he became the 2nd European player after Kurri to score 500 goals . By the way, to this day Jagr is the only Czech who has surpassed the 500-goal mark.
He played for the first time for Washington in the playoffs, but the team did not advance beyond the 1st round. With 7 points he became the team's top scorer.
The Czech did not play out his 3rd season in Washington, as he was traded to the Rangers for Anson Carter and the condition of paying 4 million from the Czech’s salary annually.
For Washington, getting rid of Jagr helped them take a place at the very bottom of the championship and have high chances in the 2004 draft lottery. Win 1 pick and spend it on No. 8.
In 2004 he played at the World Cup, where the Czechs lost to the Canadians in the semi-finals in extra time. The tournament did not go well for Jagr - only 2 points (1+1) in 5 games.
After the end of the season there was a lockout and Jagr went to Europe. He played in his native Kladno and then in the Russian Super League - he joined the Omsk Avangard team. He could easily compete for the title of top scorer of the season (38 points in 32 games). But in the playoffs in the semi-finals he reached the semi-finals, where the future champions Dynamo stood in the way.
At the end of the season, he agreed to play for the national team at the World Cup. At 4 previous tournaments it was not possible to take gold, although there was bronze. On his 5th attempt, Jagr became the world champion and entered the triple gold club (OI, CS, World Cup). At the moment there are only 2 Czechs in this club - he and Jiri Slegr. Regarding the 2005 World Cup, he became the team’s top scorer (9 points) and entered the symbolic team; in the final he made 2 assists (3-0 Canada).
After a year-long lockout, he triumphantly returned to the NHL and had one of his best seasons. For the 6th time I scored “a hundred” points in a season and for the 3rd time I scored “fifty dollars”. In addition, he updated the Rangers , which now bear his name - 56 goals and 123 points. Jagr's performance did not remain without a trace for the club - for the first time since 1997, the Rangers made it to the playoffs!
The season could have been even more outstanding, as he claimed the Maurice Richard Trophy, Art Ross Trophy and Hart Trophy.
At the end of the season, he was in the lead in goals and points, but he was surpassed at the flag by the tandem from San Jose - Jonathan Chichu (in goals) and Joe Thornton (in points).
Jagr is the unluckiest sniper in NHL history - he was 2nd 4 times, and 1st is not destiny.
In the fight for Hart he finished 2nd after Thornton.
But the Czech was not left without an award - the 3rd Leicester Pearson Award in his career .
In 2006 I went to my 3rd Olympics, which took place in Turin. It was not as successful as in Nagano, but better than in Salt Lake. The Czechs won bronze , defeating the Russian team in the match for third place (4-0). Just like in Nagano and Salt Lake, Jagr was again outside the top 10 scorers. Moreover, he became 2nd in terms of performance (7 points in 8 games) after Straka.
From the following season, Jagr became the Rangers' captain. The season turned out to be noticeably more modest than the previous one, although the 8th scorer and almost 100 points (96) are not few. In the playoffs, Jagr and co were victims of the best team of the regular season (Buffalo). The highlight of the season was becoming the 2nd European in history (after Kurri) to score 600 goals. At the moment, there are only 3 Europeans in the NHL with 600 or more goals - Kurri, Jagr and Selanne.
The 3rd season in New York was even less productive (71 points in 82 games), but the Czech added in the playoffs (15 points in 10 games). True, this turned out to be not enough; in the 2nd round, his former team, Pittsburgh, became an insurmountable barrier (in 5 matches).
In the summer of 2008, his 7-year contract expired and he became a free agent. The Rangers were not interested in signing a new agreement and Jagr turned his attention to the KHL, signing a contract with Avangrad .
During the 2004/2005 lockout, the Czech failed to become the champion of Russia with Avangard, and the Gagarin Cup also failed. He played great, but his success in the playoffs left much to be desired (the team did not advance beyond the 2nd round).
In 2010 he played at his Olympic Games in Vancouver. At the tournament he scored 3 points (in 5 games), and the team finished in the quarter-finals, losing to Finland.
In the same year, I went to the World Championships much more successfully and returned with gold (2nd in my career). Together with Klesh, he became the team's top scorer (7 points). In the final they defeated the Russian team (2-1).
The 2011 World Cup became bronze . Moreover, in the bronze match they defeated their main historical rival - the Russian national team. Following the results of the tournament, Jagr was included in the symbolic team and recognized as the best forward of the tournament. Scored 9 points (5+4) in 9 games.
In the summer of 2011, Jagr decides to return to the NHL by signing a contract with Philadelphia . The transition to unloved neighbors somewhat cooled the love of Penguins fans for their ex-captain and leader.
Well, okay, he signed, and he also harmed his former team. In the 2012 playoffs, the Penguins lost to Philadelphia 2-4 and Jagr also played a role in that. Scored 7 points in games and scored the winning goal in Game 2.
He also did well in the regular season despite 3 years outside the NHL - he scored 54 points in 73 games.
to Dallas as a free agent . Among the “stars”, he is the 12th player to make his 1000th assist in the NHL, and the only European. To close the topic of assists, he now has 1138 of them and this is 5th place in history. Only Bourque (1169), Messier (1193), Francis (1249) and Gretzky (1963) are higher.
He spent the season in Dallas incompletely and moved to Boston .
In the playoffs for the second year in a row, he annoyed his former team (in the conference finals) - he made the winning assist in overtime, making the series score 3-0.
In his first 2 seasons, Jagr won the Stanley Cup, but since then things have been much more modest in the playoffs, although there was the final of the 1996 conference. So, 21 years later, the Czech was in the final again. But the result was different: the Bears lost in 6 matches. Notably, Chicago took revenge on Jagr for losing in the 1992 finals. In total, he had 10 points (all assists) in 22 games in the playoffs.
In the summer of 2013, a new team again moved to New Jersey . He had an excellent season, becoming the team's top scorer (67 points), but, alas, without the playoffs. And most importantly, Jagr became the best European sniper in NHL history, surpassing Selanne (684 goals).
In March 2014, Jagr became the 7th player to reach the 700 goal .
The 2014 Olympics in Sochi was the last in Jaromir's career. Like 4 years ago - a 1/4 defeat, this time from the USA. At the Tournament in 5 matches he scored 3 points (2+1).
Jagr will no longer play out the 2014/2015 season in New Jersey - he was traded to Florida .
Jagr could not help but attend the 2020 World Championship, as it was held in the Czech Republic. Alas, Canada did not allow Jagr and Co. into the final, and in the match for 3rd place the USA was successful. At the end of the tournament, the 43-year-old veteran was recognized as MVP. With 9 points (6+3) in 10 matches, he became the team's top scorer.
In the 2015/2016 season, the experienced veteran helped the young team from Florida reach the playoffs for the 5th time in its history, and became the team's top scorer with 66 points. Considering that the forward demonstrates in his 5th decade, this could not help but be noted at the end of the season - they awarded the Bill Masterton Trophy (“for loyalty and devotion to hockey”).
In the 2020 playoffs, Jagr scored his 200th point , becoming the 5th player to reach this milestone. Only Glenn Anderson (214), Jari Kurri (233), Mark Messier (295) and, of course, Gretzky (382) are higher.
Last October, Jagr became the third player in history to score 750 goals .
But at the end of the year, Jagr, having scored 1888 points, became the 2nd highest scorer in NHL history . Only Gretzky now has more (2857).
The Golden Stick is the main individual hockey award in the Czech Republic. Naturally, Jagr is a record holder - he took it 12 times. The closest pursuer “Dominator” was awarded 5 times.
In 2010 he was awarded the Order of Merit for services to the Czech Republic.
