Fans of Mitya Fomin quarreled after his phrase on Instagram: “Kyiv does not spare anyone”

Childhood and youth

Dmitry Anatolyevich Fomin was born on January 17, 1974 in the city of Novosibirsk, RSFSR, USSR . His parents had nothing to do with the world of art: his father, Anatoly Danilovich ( August 18, 1939-February 20, 2014 ), had the title of Candidate of Technical Sciences and worked as an associate professor at the Novosibirsk Electrotechnical Institute of Communications, and was also the director of the Regional Center for Occupational Safety and Health in the Siberian Federal District . Mom, Tamara Pavlovna (b. 1942), worked as a patent engineer. Dmitry himself claims that his parents were always very loyal and gave him complete freedom of choice. Therefore, they did not insist that their son continue their work and follow the scientific path. They did not object to Dima’s passion for the stage, which manifested itself at a very early age.

Mitya Fomin in childhood

From a young age, the boy portrayed an artist, first in the form of a game, when he sang to the sound of gramophone records, then he decided to connect his life with the stage. However, while studying in the last grades of school, the guy suddenly felt a desire to treat animals and intended to become a veterinarian . The parents did not deny, they simply said that this profession is agricultural and involves treating not cats and parrots, but cattle and other unpleasant things. Mom and Dad instead suggested that if we were to get involved in medicine, then do it at a decent level, that is, graduate from the Novosibirsk Medical Institute.

Dmitry became a medical student and diligently learned the basics of his future profession, but in his third year he went on academic leave . This was due to the fact that friends invited him to stay with them in England . The matter was not limited to that trip: soon the energetic young man was called even further - to the United States of America. There, Dima did not sit idly by, but grabbed every opportunity to work, while at the same time improving his command of the English language. There the guy began to attend musical theater, and this art impressed him so much that Fomin began to write music himself.

Little Fomin

In addition to Mitya, the family also had a daughter, Svetlana . She also turned out to be a creative person: first she studied at the Novosibirsk Conservatory, then at the Milan Conservatory ; She played in an early music ensemble, then moved to permanent residence in Italy with her husband, who is also an artist. Dmitry himself, after spending a year abroad, returned to Novosibirsk and continued to study to become a doctor, but just before the state exams he decided to radically change his life. He realized that he could not be a doctor, that after all, his calling was music and creativity. The guy packed his things and left for Moscow, where he literally started life from scratch. Parents, as always, supported their son in this intention.

The beginning of the star trek

Dmitry successfully passed the first rounds of several theater universities in the capital: the Moscow Art Theater School, the Shchepkinsky School, GITIS, VGIK - luck accompanied him everywhere. But the young man nevertheless decided to “finish off” his medical education, probably wanting to be sure to have a solid medical diploma in his pocket. Therefore, Fomin, after the first round of entrance exams in Moscow, returned to Novosibirsk, passed the state exams at the medical institute and deservedly received the specialty of a pediatrician. Now it was possible to calmly return to Moscow and continue the path to glory, which is what the persistent young man did. Of all the educational institutions, he chose VGIK and became a student in the acting department. Thus began his life in the capital, which soon brought a pleasant surprise. It turned out that at the same time his old friends from his hometown were in Moscow - composer Pavel Yesenin and producer Eric Chanturia. Having seen the guy’s vocal and artistic abilities, they offered Mitya a position as a soloist in their new project - the pop group “Hi-Fi”.

Mitya Fomin in his youth

The official date of the “birth” of the Hi-Fi group can be considered August 2, 1998. Mitya Fomin’s partners there were two other talented young people – Timofey Pronkin and Oksana Oleshko. The unusual name was an abbreviated form of the English expression “High Fidelity ,” which translates as “high quality sound reproduction.” Its authorship belongs to the famous showman Alisher, fashion designer and producer Shura. Hi-Fi started with the song “ Not Given”, for which they also shot a video clip, and in a style that was new for that time, which immediately attracted the attention of the audience. It became clear that a new and unique participant had appeared on the Russian stage.

Fomin and the Hi-Fi group

The next single was “Besprizornik ”, and then the group released their first album – “First Contact” (1999). The compositions from it firmly took first place in all the country's charts, and the band itself became recognizable and mega-popular. “Hi-Fi” is invited to perform more and more often, and now Mitya Fomin has no time left to study, and therefore, after the first semester at VGIK, he is forced to leave there. Four albums of the Hi-Fi group are released one after another, and the whole country sings along to the main hits of youth idols - “ Stupid People”, “And We Loved”, “The Seventh Petal”, “We Are Not Angels”.

Different compositions of the Hi-Fi group

It is curious that the voice of Mitya Fomin himself is not heard in any of the songs of the Hi-Fi group. In all compositions, the vocals belong to the composer Pavel Yesenin, who also performed as a singer. This was the decision of Yesenin himself and producer Chanturia, who agreed that Pavel’s voice was much better suited to the overall concept of the project. At the same time, no one denied the fact that Fomin sings quite well, but this particular group requires a slightly different sound.

Album of the group "Hi-Fi"

Dmitry himself initially agreed with the role of “animator” Pavel Yesenin and the constant performances to his soundtrack. But when ten whole years passed like this, the artist realized that it was time to change something. He wanted to sing and present his songs to the public. Therefore, as soon as the ten-year contract expired, Fomin began a solo career. This happened on January 1, 2009, and two months later our hero’s own creative team appeared, named in his honor.

Mitya Fomin, homo scandal: the group “HI-FI” returns to the stage

Despite all sorts of rumors about homosexuality, Fomin tries not to pay attention to such rumors and is seriously preparing for a reunion with the HI-FI group.

In April 2020, the first members of the group appeared on the stage of the Olimpiysky sports complex: Ksenia Oleshko, Mitya Fomin and Timofey Pronkin, who is still a member of the legendary group. A new member of the singing group, Marina Drozhdina, also appeared on the platform.

Mitya Fomin told the publication that at one time he left the group because he wanted to start a solo career and succeed as a singer and television producer. According to the singer himself, everything worked out for him and he has been working independently for ten years, but now he wants to reunite with the group to create new hits.

Solo career

Mitya Fomin did not start his independent “swimming” in show business from scratch. While still a member of Hi-Fi, he prepared the ground for his own future group: he recorded his songs, made useful contacts and prepared performance programs. Thus, the artist already had certain achievements, but he understood that he could not make a real career without an influential producer. To do this, he began collaborating with Maxim Fadeev, whose name had weight in the artistic community. The contract between him and Fomin was signed on March 1, 2009, and to begin joint activities, the song “Two Lands” was selected from all the material available to Mitya. Very soon, this composition was presented to the public on the popular radio station “Russian Radio”, and soon a video appeared, which became the leader of the “Russian Ten” chart on the prestigious MTV.

Mitya Fomin with Zhanna Friske in his youth

Fomin's start was undoubtedly very successful, but the joint work with Maxim Fadeev did not last long, only six months. The beginning of 2010 was marked for our hero by the start of work without a producer and the release of a second single called “ That’s All.” The success was obvious: this composition was played on the radio more than 350 thousand times in just six months, and in the Golden Gramophone it stayed afloat for nineteen weeks, mostly in second place.

Also in 2010, Mitya Fomin released his third single, “ Everything will be fine . This song became known to every person in the country, regardless of musical preferences, because it sounded literally from every window. It stayed on the chart for twenty-two weeks and brought its performer the Golden Gramophone Award.

Awarding Fomin

The singles were followed by albums. In the summer of 2010, fans of Fomin’s work were able to appreciate his debut album “So It Will Be ,” created in the styles of relaxation, chill-out, ambient, and dance. The sound of the songs from the album was very reminiscent of the work of Hi-Fi, at least they were written using the same technologies.

2011 - Mitya Fomin records the song “ City Lights” together with the legendary British group “Pet shop boys” . And this was not the only feature of this single: the video for it was filmed in St. Petersburg and in the capital of Cuba, Havana. The work was done so well that it brought the artist another “ Golden Gramophone ” and first place in the Muz-TV chart.

Mitya Fomin performs

This was followed by other songs and albums, which invariably brought success to their author. It seemed that Dmitry would continue his activities as a successful solo performer, but in April 2020 the Hi-Fi group suddenly returned. The already half-forgotten group in its “golden” lineup - Mitya Fomin, Timofey Pronkin and Oksana Oleshko - entered the stage after ten years of oblivion. It happened at the Olimpiyskiy , where the concert of the group “ Hands Up !” and where the artists from “Hi-Fi” were invited by Sergei Zhukov.

Mitya Fomin: still from the new video

At the same time, it became known that the band had recorded several new songs and was preparing to resume performances, as well as shoot a new video. In particular, such information appeared on the group’s official website at the end of April. On September 6, 2020, “Hi-Fi” again made itself known with a performance during the radio show “Murzilki Live” on Avtoradio. Then the group sang several of their old songs and presented a new creation - the song “ Wake Me Up”. This time the vocals belonged not only to Pavel Yesenin, but also to Mitya Fomin.

Musical career[ | ]

1998–2008: Frontman of the Hi-Fi group[ | ]

Mitya Fomin as part of the Hi-Fi group
August 2, 1998 is the official birthday of the Hi-Fi musical group. The songs “Not Given”, “Besprizornik”, “You Forgive” from “First Contact”, the group’s debut album, quickly made it popular and brought the album to high positions in the Russian charts. The successful start of his creative career and a busy tour schedule forced Mitya to leave VGIK. Fomin recorded vocals only in the first three songs of the group, which Pavel Yesenin later did not like, which is why he began recording instead of Mitya[7].

The frontman's career in the Hi-Fi group lasted for 10 years. During this time, the group released four albums, recorded such famous songs as “Black Raven”, “Stupid People”, “And We Loved”, “The Seventh Petal”, “We Are Not Angels” and toured the whole country with concerts[2]. At the end of 2008, Mitya decided to leave the Hi-Fi group, coming to the conclusion that he needed to further develop independently, especially since there were many prerequisites for this. While still a member of the group, Mitya began collaborating with several authors, recording songs and preparing a solo program.

On January 1, 2009, Mitya’s contract with the Hi-Fi group expired, which he did not renew.

2009—2010: Beginning of solo activities and first album[ | ]

Within two months after the breakup of the group, Mitya formed a creative team, recorded songs and toured successfully, but at the same time he understood that without a good, progressive producer it would be difficult for him to attract listeners and get into the charts. So, on March 1, 2009, Dmitry’s collaboration with producer Maxim Fadeev officially began. Of all the material that Fomin came to him with, Maxim chose the song “Two Lands,” and at the end of March the song premiered on the Russian Radio station. Soon after the premiere, a video clip appeared, filmed by young director Evgeny Kuritsin under the supervision of Maxim Fadeev. The clip reached first place on the MTV “Russian Ten” chart. The collaboration between Fomin and Fadeev lasted exactly six months, and on September 1, Mitya stopped working on a promising contract. The breakup took place by mutual consent.

In January 2010, the singer’s second solo single, “That’s All,” was released. Over 7 months of rotation, the song was played on radio stations more than 350 thousand times[8] and lasted 19 weeks in the country’s main chart, “Golden Gramophone,” rising to number 2 on the chart[9].

On June 14, 2010, Mitya’s third single “Everything will be fine” launched, also released in the English version called “Ok!” The song immediately gets on “Russian Radio”, “Europe Plus”, “Hit FM” and many other main domestic radio stations, thus rising to 3rd line in the “official Russian radio chart”[10]. At the end of 2010, Mitya received the national music award “Golden Gramophone” for 22 weeks on the chart with this composition. The video clip, filmed in the Mediterranean Sea in the waters of the Greek islands, is the singer’s debut as a director. The rapper StuFF, whom the singer was producing at that time, also took part in the video[2].

In the summer of 2010, Mitya Fomin’s debut album, “So It Will Be,” was released. The album received mostly mixed reviews from critics: described as "slow, relaxing, chill-out, ambient, light dance." Critics also called Fomin “a singer who maintains proportions and acts according to the technology of the Hi-Fi group, without going to extremes”[11].

On September 18, 2010, Mitya debuts as the host of the television program “Tophit Chart” on the federal music television channel Muz-TV.

2010—2013: Second studio album “Arrogant Angel”[ | ]

In October 2010, the singer’s video clip for the song “We’ll Overwinter” was shot, which became the first single in support of the singer’s future second album, “Arrogant Angel.” Mitya himself again became the director.

At the end of March 2011, the song “City Lights” followed, featuring the British pop group Pet Shop Boys. The video for it was filmed in St. Petersburg and Cuba, in Havana. He was able to top the “Russian Chart” of the Muz-TV channel, and the song itself received the national music award “Golden Gramophone” for 27 weeks on the chart.

June 21, 2011 - Mitya becomes a laureate in the “Fashion Breakthrough” category at the annual Fashion People Awards ceremony in the field of fashion.

In July, the first part of the video for the song “Not a Mannequin” was filmed in Hong Kong together with the Russian singer Kristina Orsa. The remaining filming took place in Moscow. Unlike his previous videos, in which Mitya himself acted as a director, work on this video was entrusted to a professional film crew led by Marat Adelshin. The video premiered in mid-October 2011. According to the artist, the video for this song became one of the most expensive in his entire career[12].

On October 1, 2011, Mitya was presented in two categories at once at the first Russian music award “RU.TV” - “Best Ringtone” and “Real Parish”. As a result, the singer wins the “Real Parish” nomination (breakthrough of the year)[13].

On October 21, the composition “Gardener” was launched on radio stations, included in Mitya’s debut album “So It Will Be.” An English version later appeared under the title "Beautiful Rose".

On November 17, in Minsk, at the State Belarusian Circus, the premiere of the artist’s new project, the musical and circus performance “Everything will be fine”[14], took place.

On April 24, 2012, the single “Good Song” was released. Later, the premiere of the video took place, where singer Christina Orsa took part, who had to work with Fomin not for the first time.

On November 5, the premiere of the collaboration between Mitya and DJ Leonid Rudenko, “Orient Express,” took place on Russian Radio.

On May 6, 2013, the singer’s second studio album “Arrogant Angel” was released in the iTunes Store; it included all previous singles, as well as eight solo video clips.

The artist did not stop at the release of “Arrogant Angel” and immediately after it released the single “Home”, recorded together with DJ Kirill Clash. The composition was not included in the previously mentioned collection and is rightfully considered the first single in support of the future third studio album. Later, a slower version of the single, “Guitar Version,” was released, which allowed it to enter the radio chart of the Tophit portal. The video premiered on October 3, 2013. TV and radio presenter, model and actress Victoria Bonya took part in the video.

The artist devotes a lot of time and effort to charitable activities: he supports the events of the Life Line Foundation for saving seriously ill children, and is the curator of the Northern Crown charity organization. He repeatedly traveled to Chechnya and Dagestan, where a series of his concerts took place. In the fall of 2013, during one of these trips, Mitya was awarded the medal “For Distinction in Service” and has repeatedly received gratitude for his contribution to cultural and educational work.[15]

From January 2014 to March 29, 2020 - host of the “ClipYou Chart” program on the Muz-TV channel.[16]

On March 8, 2014, the singer presented a new song, the authors of which were poet Mikhail Gutseriev and composer Dmitry Dubinsky. The light spring composition about love was called “Barely Breathing” and became an excellent gift from the artist for World Women’s Day.[17]

The artist’s next radio single was a song called “Tomorrow everything will be different.” Filming for the video of the same name took place in the fall of 2014 in London. This monochrome, mono-actor work is Mitya’s first experience of working with a foreign film crew. The idea of the video is that a person in a modern city, with all the abundance of people around, can be very lonely, left alone with the metropolis, alone with himself.[18]

On December 3, 2014, a solemn ceremony of awarding the winners of the VKLYBE.TV AWARDS 2014 took place in the ICON hall. In the special nomination “Best Club Artist” according to the Muz-TV channel, Fomin’s competitors were Vlad Sokolovsky, Bianca, Glyukoza, Egor Creed, however, he wins by a large margin.[19]

On April 22, 2020, Mitya Fomin presented the premiere of a new author’s project - a video play “Songs of Spring, Love and Victory”, dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the great holiday, which took place at the Central Museum of the Great Patriotic War on Poklonnaya Hill. The artist prepared a real musical show for the guests of the evening and, appearing in a new role, revealed himself to the audience from a completely unexpected side. Everyone's favorite songs of the war years, performed live to the accompaniment of musicians, are a new, very bright, ambitious and, definitely, successful role for the artist. After the concert, this was noted both by people who first became acquainted with Mitya’s work, and by his long-time and devoted fans. The main guests of the evening, of course, were veterans - it was for them, first of all, that I prepared, their mood and impressions were the most important. After the first few compositions, they are already singing along with the artist - and this is perhaps the main and most revealing result of the evening.[20]

On April 24, 2020, the premiere of Mitya Fomin’s new video “That’s how I love you” took place. The video was filmed in Florence (Tuscany, Italy), and the director himself was again the singer. The main role in the video was played by Ksenia Oleshko, who is familiar to viewers since the days of “Everything will be fine”, Mitya’s former colleague in the Hi-Fi group, its first and brightest soloist. In his directorial work, Mitya Fomin is not afraid to experiment with genres; he defines the artistic style of this video as a modern fairy tale or contemporary fantasy.[21]

On October 19, 2020, the premiere of another musical novelty from Mitya, “Alien Dreams,” took place on the air of Russian Radio.[22] Soon the single was supported by other radio stations. Working on his third solo album, Fomin increasingly turns to the work of novice authors, noting that youth and creative hunger have always been the engines of the creative process. Unlike the vast majority of his videos, this time Mitya refused the role of director, turning to Taras Golubkov and the ICONA Creative Agency. Filming took place in Kyiv. Ukraine was not chosen by chance - the artist has always had great respect for the creative potential of this country. Special video graphics and animation helped to technically realize the director’s idea. The video talks about how important it is to be in love, how the world transforms and begins to play with new colors if you love and are loved.[23] On October 30, the all-Russian premiere of this work took place in the “Desk of Orders” program on the RU.TV channel.[22]

The artist admitted that it was a great honor for him to be in the same hall with such outstanding people of our country.[25]

On November 20, in honor of World Children's Day, the performer presented his joint work with Igor Krutoy's Academy of Popular Music - a video for the song "New Day", which became the anthem of the Northern Crown charity foundation, the release of which was dedicated to the fifteenth anniversary of the foundation. Igor Yakovlevich himself also took part in the filming, decorating the video with his brilliant piano playing.[26]

And on November 22, 2020, Mitya received another Golden Gramophone statuette at the 20th anniversary ceremony of the National Music Award in St. Petersburg for his hit “Everything will be fine.”[25]

Since June 2020, he has been a guest editor of the “Psychology” section of the electronic magazine HELLO.RU. And this is not without reason: Mitya managed to combine work with study and graduate from the Faculty of Psychology of the Humanitarian, Economic and Technological Institute (GETI).[27] Therefore, now he is not only a popular artist, but also a certified psychologist.[28]

Musicians of the MF DrumShow drum show Sergey Shtepa and Nikita Lukyanov became laureates of the MusicBox 2020 Real Prize in the “Musicians of the Year” category. This special nomination was first introduced in 2016 and was immediately awarded to charismatic musicians from Mitya Fomin’s band.[29]

On May 30, 2020, the artist presented a video for the song “Follow the Sun.” Filming of the artist's new video took place in the United Arab Emirates. Through the lens of director Taras Golubkov, the luxurious views of the recently opened Palazzo Versace hotel, the urban landscapes of the metropolis and the beauty of the sandy desert of Rub al-Khali are captured. This extravagant, phantasmagoric video in the best traditions of pop art with bright, charismatic characters is intended to become a real hymn to the sun, summer, humor, and love of life. The adornment of the new video is TV presenter, ambassador of the 2020 FIFA World Cup, “Miss Russia” Victoria Lopyreva.[30]

In November 2020, the new composition “Find and Don’t Lose” was presented (the video premiered on March 20, 2017), and the release date of the album was announced - December 2, 2020 and its title - “Tomorrow everything will be different.”

At the end of 2020, the Golovinsky District Court of Moscow deprived Dmitry Fomin of his driver’s license for a year and a half for driving while intoxicated[32].

On December 8, Mitya Fomin’s solo acoustic concert took place in Teatralny, timed to coincide with the release of the artist’s third studio album of the same name. For the first time, the viewer heard familiar melodies in acoustic sound. Concert-confession, concert-revelation: one of the brightest pop heroes of the dance stage that evening exchanged the club stage for a theatrical platform, and the dance-mood inherent in his work for harmonious, lyrical, delicately constructed acoustic arrangements.[33]

On April 12, 2020, Mitya Fomin presented a new acoustic program “Tomorrow everything will be different” in the Diplomatic Hall of the State Kremlin Palace. Favorite hits, new songs, live sound, exclusively instrumental performance, the singer’s frank monologues and his interactive communication with the audience revealed a different side to the artist.[34]

The Moscow concert gave rise to Mitya Fomin’s large charity tour of the Far East, which took place from April 16 to April 28, 2020. The tour was supported by the all-Russian charitable foundation “Life Line,” of which the artist has been an ambassador for 9 years.[34]

He was involved in producing several musical projects, including rapper StuFF, the group Vacation and the group Yen. For the latter, the singer shot a video for the song “Exboy”, again performing in his already familiar role as a director[35].

FOMKA[ | ]

On October 27, 2020, the network premiered the video clip “Mobilka” by a new, previously unknown artist with the unusual nickname FOMKA (this is what the common people call a burglar’s tool). However, many recognized Mitya Fomin in the terrifying, red-haired Joker - the main character of the video. The release of Mitya’s new video was timed to coincide with Halloween. Fans had mixed reactions to his new work. Some praise him for his courage, originality and willingness to experiment, while others demand the return of their favorite artist in his previous form. Mitya himself admits that there is no reason to worry, he remains in his previous form, and FOMKA is his alter-ego, living its own life without interfering with his usual image.[36]

I became bored inside myself, and I came up with this new hero who can afford what I cannot afford, existing in my usual status and creative space. From time to time this character will break out, sing what I cannot sing, surprise with his performances and non-standard habits. I have always been close to outrageous music stars, and somewhere this is a tribute to my unrealized youthful maximalism[37].

New projects[ | ]

Since April 7, 2020, Mitya Fomin has been weekly placing domestic performers in their places as the host of the “Russian Chart” on the Muz TV channel.[38]

Return to Hi-Fi[ | ]

In April 2020, Mitya Fomin, Timofey Pronkin and Oksana Oleshko appeared on the Olimpiysky stage for the first time in 10 years in the golden lineup of the Hi-Fi group. Sergei Zhukov invited them to perform as guests at the “Hands Up!” concert. Mitya Fomin also reported that they recorded several new songs[39]. On April 25, it was announced on the group’s official website that the golden lineup was preparing to shoot a new video clip[40]. On September 6, the group performed in gold on the “Murzilki Live” show on the Avtoradio radio station, where they performed their previous compositions and also presented a new song, “Wake Me Up” with vocals by Pavel Yesenin and Mitya Fomin[41].
