Firstly, the train was not subject to customs inspection at the border due to lack of time. The train stood at the Petukhovo station for only three minutes. On the day we came to look at the presenter’s house, “post No. 1” was empty. Probably due to the absence of “body number 1”. As we learned, the owner was on vacation in Australia at that time.
“Andrey is protected not only by private security, the state also needs to protect him, because he is the only journalist who is not afraid to expose corrupt officials on air,” says Svetlana Vragova, artistic director of the Modern theater. In “The Moment of Truth” she was a witness in the “Khodorkovsky case”, and she has known Karaulov since the days of GITIS (his first profession was theater critic). – When I hear Andrei speaking out about someone again, I call and ask: “Aren’t you scared? What are you doing?" And it’s right that he works right in a secure house, where he has the necessary equipment and a studio. Because the materials he has are of interest to his enemies as well.
“Many of Andrei’s investigations ended disastrously for his heroes,” confirms the presenter’s friend Oleg Mitvol. “I know that they tried to eliminate him physically several times.
The entire perimeter of the Karaulov site is equipped with video cameras. As they say, the mouse will not slip through. Only once did the paparazzi manage to photograph the Karaulov site, for which they had to fly over Novoglagolevo in a helicopter. And yet the roof of the house remained hidden under the crowns of centuries-old trees.
Fish in the lake and a crocodile in the aquarium
“Andrey lives in an old dacha house,” Mitvol continues. – He doesn’t have any New Russian concrete castles on his territory. A gazebo, a guest house - everything is Soviet, nostalgic. Andrey says that he is relaxing in such an environment.
It is best to judge Karaulov's setting by his program, which is filmed in a home interior. In “The Moment of Truth” you can see oak tables, bookshelves, an iconostasis, various figurines, a modest porch, and garden paths with lanterns. The presenter's two main passions, revealed by the camera, are fireplaces (there are several of them) and fish.
“When I first came to Andrey’s house, I was amazed by the collection of his aquarium inhabitants,” admits Gennady Gudkov. – Mostly fish, and in one aquarium he had a crocodile. This animal did not evoke any positive emotions in me. I once tapped my finger on the aquarium and saw a predator that was ready to rush at any moving object. I quietly hated him...
On the spacious site of Karaulov, Gudkov admits, there are many remarkable things:
- There is a beautiful lake there. You can swim and fish in it. I like Andrey’s fountain - not just a simple one, but a whole hydraulic structure that purifies and disperses water throughout the area. Everything was done wisely, I would like to adopt some things myself, but, unfortunately, I can’t. I simply don’t have the kind of space that Andrey has... Karaulov found a way to combine living in a well-equipped house and working in it. Everyone dreams of this, but not everyone can afford it.
“Everything that has been acquired” is inherited from my mother
Surprisingly, in the entire 20-year history of “Moment of Truth” - a program where politicians and businessmen are denounced in every episode - only one person became interested in Andrei Karaulov himself. Viktor Ilyukhin has been a target for many years. Then he decided to go on the attack. In 2009, in his book “Power. Corruption. Crisis” published an article dedicated to the journalist’s property.
As Ilyukhin found out, having made inquiries to the regional registration chamber and the Unified State Register of the Moscow Region, Karaulov inherited all his property from his mother. From 1999 to 2003, “a simple pensioner Nina Leonidovna Avtomonova, who worked in a small organization in Korolev during Soviet times,” bequeathed to her son several plots of 12 acres each and 2 houses with an area of 134 and 184 square meters.
Andrey's mother now lives with her son. His daughter and son live with him.
Ilyukhin, by the way, has a separate story connected with Karaulov’s son. One of the former wives of a famous TV presenter, Ksenia, several years ago tried, with the help of lawyer Ilyukhin, to “take away” Karaulov’s son Vasya. He allegedly kidnapped the child and kept him in his house. A woman even wrote to Putin about this: they say, look how this defender of the foundations of the state tramples on his own family... It’s a long, ugly story. The lady was eventually forced to give in.
And Vasya will soon be seen on the big stage.
On September 10, the boy and his father will spend a festive guard evening. It can be seen that behind the other wall – the red one – the presenter’s merits are valued very highly.
