The film was directed by Iskra Babic and the film “Men!” was released on Soviet screens on March 5, 1982. This work became the director's fourth full-length film. For this film, Iskra Babich was awarded the State Prize of the RSFSR named after the Vasilyev brothers and became one of the most famous female directors in the vast expanses of the USSR.

    Anatoly Solonitsyn, the favorite actor of the classic Russian cinema Andrei Tarkovsky, also starred in a small episode of the film. In the film “Men!” Although the actor played a short cameo role, thanks to his immense talent he filled it with such a powerful dramatic component that the scene with the actor became one of the most powerful in the film. Unfortunately, this film became the penultimate work in the great actor’s solid track record. Two and a half years later, Anatoly Solonitsyn died from a long illness.

    For a long time, the problem of relations between fathers and children has been a favorite topic in society, which is reflected in literature and, of course, in cinema. This is also described in the film “Men”. The main character, Pavel Zubov, has not been to his native village for a long time, where his parents remained. After the army, instead of returning to the village, to his parents, Pavel goes as far away from it as possible to the Arctic. And now it’s been fourteen years since he came home. The father believed that his son had gone for a long ruble. And one day she decides to give him a telegram about her death. But he had his own reasons for this. Pavel immediately arrives from Nikel, reveals his father’s lies and on the very first day he ends up at a wedding where his friend’s son is getting married and at the table he notices a girl who is very similar to his first love. A friend’s wife says that this is Polina, his daughter, about whom he has heard so much. The girl, having caught his gaze on her, will try to leave the wedding. But Pavel was an emotional person, and he comes to the girl’s house. He asks Polina if she knows who he is and, having learned that her mother, dying, told the whole truth about him. The conversation with his daughter greatly excited the man. He comes home, but his parents also haven’t spoken for many years because of him. It turns out that before the army their son had a great love. When Pavel went into the army, his mother soon noticed that Nastya was pregnant. She decided that the girl did not wait for her son and wrote to him about this in the army. That’s why Pavel left for the city of Nikel, never to see Nastya again. But it turned out later, just before her death, that Polina was Zubov’s daughter. But most of all, Pasha’s parents were now worried about something else. After Nastya’s death, the children lived in the house on their own for some time, but the old Zubovs helped them, and they had a city and a cow. But just recently the guardianship authorities became interested and decided to take him to an orphanage. But all three children had to be separated. So, Polina was taken to a boarding school because the girl needed to study. Pashka, the son of an artist, whom Nastya once took pity on and sheltered, but he became an alcoholic, was sent to a very ordinary orphanage. And Styopka, the boy whom Nastya, abandoned, took pity on and took home, should have been sent to a special boarding school, since he did not speak. The old Zubovs wrote an application, but they were refused because their age was not suitable. Then Valentina Zubova, Pavel’s sister, wrote an application for guardianship. But she was refused because she had a disability. But the parents did not know how to talk about this with their son and created such an environment that he wanted to take Polina himself. But the girl doesn’t want to go anywhere without her brothers. And Pavel makes up his mind and takes everyone, even the dog. His common-law wife, having learned about this, left him. But friends who themselves grew up in an orphanage came to the rescue. They brought food and clothes for the children. But when they went into the yard, dogs attacked them and tore their clothes. But Styopka, who had not spoken before, began shouting to the men. This is how a new family was formed, and the kids did not end up in an orphanage.

    • Of the three on-screen children of Alexander Mikhailov, only Misha Buzylev-Kretso became an actor. He played at the Romen Theater, starred in several films, including Black Eyes with Marcello Mastroianni, and is now working on an Internet project dedicated to gypsy music.

    Actor Alexander Mikhailov, who played Pavel Zubov, refused this role three times. The story seemed “fictional” to him, and therefore uninteresting. The actor was persuaded to act in the film by the scriptwriter Valentin Dyachenko. He said that the “fictional” story was written from himself. Dyachenko, like the hero of the film, had to take care of other people's children. Once upon a time, the future film playwright worked as a miner in the North - in Komi, where he served time in a camp from 1946 to 1953: during the years of Stalinist repression, he was accused of espionage. Here he met a village girl, Olga, with whom he wrote a portrait of Polina (played by Ira Ivanova), Zubov’s daughter, in the script. Olya was sentenced to five years for running away from peat mining to go home to wash herself. Dyachenko and the political prisoners began to look after Olya like their own daughter. After the camp, Dyachenko married a woman with two children, to whom he became a father. Valentin worked hard to feed his family. And since part-time work was not welcomed in those years, in the credits of many of his films, including “Men!..”, there is a pseudonym - Valentin Mikhailov. The question whether the screenwriter and the actor were relatives arose among many. “Valentin Dyachenko was similar to Alexander Mikhailov - just as sharp in his movements, categorical in his intonations,” recalls the film’s director of photography, Sergei Zaitsev. It took a long time to select actors for the roles of Polina’s brothers—her own Pavlik and the gypsy child Stepka adopted by her mother. More than eighty children applied for the role of Styopka. The choice was made on Misha Buzylev-Kretso, a boy from an acting gypsy family. “I was approved based on a photograph in which I was completely bald - I had scrofula,” recalls Mikhail. “And in the film I have luxurious hair.” According to the plot, Styopka is mute, only at the end of the film, after experiencing a nervous shock, he spoke. But Misha Buzylev-Kretso was incredibly talkative. Because of this, a lot of film was ruined. “There is an episode in the film where friends come to Pavel Zubov’s house,” says Mikhail. “My father played one of them.” I probably ruined five takes by shouting “Oh, dada!” Dada in gypsy means dad.” I had to tinker with the young actor in another scene - where Styopka feeds the dog a pie. “I had to put my head in the kennel, but I didn’t want to do it - it was dark and scary there,” recalls Mikhail. “Then the adults resorted to a trick: they broke down the back wall of the booth and my father ‘met’ me on the other side.” Rex the mongrel was played by his village namesake. “Oh, it was difficult with Rex - he often refused to do what was required of him,” says cameraman Sergei Zaitsev. “For example, I didn’t want to chase the car in which the guys were being taken away from him. I had to hide the dog’s owner in the back seat of the Volga - only after that he “agreed” to the marathon. The owner was very worried: could the dog’s heart survive? After all, Rex was no longer young, and besides, he was a domestic dog; before the movie he led a sedentary lifestyle - except for chasing chickens and geese around the yard.”

    Kindergarten on the set

    Petya Krylov, who played Stepka’s brother, was not as restless as Misha, but imitated him in everything. “It was as if we had a full-fledged kindergarten on the set,” recalls Sergei Zaitsev. “There was a lot of trouble when we had to sit and wait for sunny weather. The children began to play pranks, play, sing, and dance. And then they fought and roared. But director Iskra Babich knew how to calm the children down like a mother.” How? For example, I gave Misha... props - old gramophone records. They seemed incredibly beautiful to the baby. “I take the record in my hands, run with it along the corridor of the set, fall in joy - and it breaks,” says Mikhail. - I ask for another one - the same story. And so several times in a row.” And the actors who played the boys recall that among the effective methods of influencing them was... intimidation by a taxi driver, who was played in the film by a taxi driver from Stavropol. “I don’t know why we were afraid of him - he wasn’t scary. Just so serious and thoughtful,” says Mikhail. For his role in the film “Men!..” Misha Buzylev-Kretso received “not childish” money by those standards. “They said that when the picture was shown to Brezhnev, he shed tears and said: these actors - meaning Alexander Mikhailov and me - should be given bonuses!” - says Mikhail. Alexander Mikhailov was given 5 thousand rubles, Misha - 500 rubles. After filming “Men!..” the on-screen brothers became friends. They still maintain friendly relations.     First and last role

    For actress Irina Ivanova, this was her first film role and in the film “Men!” she came solely through the patronage of the film’s director, Iskra Babich, who found a photo of the young actress in the archive of documents from the popular Soviet film “The Adventures of Electronics.” Irina never passed this casting, but Iskra Babich was firmly convinced that the lively actress would be ideal for the role of a character named Polina.

    To the surprise of many, despite the resounding success and rave reviews from the audience, this role became the only one in the actress’s biography. After filming, Irina Ivanova decided to give up any film activity forever , but in memory of her invaluable experience she keeps the original version of the script with personal notes from Iskra Babich.
