The audition of actors for the main roles in the film was long and difficult. The director was looking for self-confident and independent girls who could fit into the roles of two sisters, which were difficult even for an experienced actor. For young candidates, passing the casting was not an easy task; Bodrov asked tricky questions of a personal nature . Many young actresses were not ready for this.
It is interesting that the roles were given to those girls who did not want to take part in the filming, namely Oksana Akinshina and Ekaterina Gorina. Without trying to produce an effect, this is exactly how they showed themselves in Bodrov’s eyes.

12-year-old Akinshina came to the casting by chance; she did not want to go to it, but was sent by a modeling agency, where the girl earned her first working money. She chatted with Bodrov as if he were a peer, she was impudent and imposing, in a word, she showed herself to be a real badass. And 8-year-old Gorina sat cross-legged in front of the camera. She lived next to Lenfilm and her grandmother sent her to the casting; the girl, although stubborn, obeyed. She came in an old sweater that she wore at the dacha, and stood out noticeably against the background of neat women her age in dresses that resembled dolls and tried with all their might to please the director.
Talking about herself, she said that her name is Rita, her parents have a large country house and 15 dogs. And she also left the wrong phone number. “I wove about three boxes and left,” she later recalled. When Sergei Bodrova’s assistants managed to find the girl with great difficulty, it turned out that her name was Katya, she lived in a communal apartment and was only dreaming of a dog.
