Stand Up show participant Dmitry Romanov: “I actively refuse jokes below the belt”

Childhood and youth

Dmitry Romanov was born in Odessa on January 8, 1985. According to the young man, his biological father left the family when Dima’s mother was pregnant with her son. However, the woman did not stop communicating with the parents of her husband who left her. Some time later, the boy had a stepfather and a brother. It so happened that little Romanov was lucky to have three grandmothers and three grandfathers.

Even as a child, the boy had a sense of humor. True residents of Odessa, relatives of the future artist, constantly joked in everyday life. According to Romanov, his grandmother lived to a ripe old age thanks to her easy approach to problems and her ability to turn them into a joke.

Dmitry does not hide his Jewish nationality. The young man, with his characteristic humor, notes that this is immediately visible from his appearance and it would be stupid to deny this fact. However, Dmitry’s family is not a believer and does not attend a synagogue and does not adhere to the canons of Judaism.

Dmitry Romanov in childhood and now

The comedian recalls that his childhood in Odessa was happy, despite the difficult life and lack of money. The young man lived in his hometown until he was 25 years old.

The student completed his secondary education and received a silver medal. But the graduate realized that he had absolutely no idea what to do in adult life. The applicant submitted documents to the Academy of Food Technologies simply because the university was located closest to home.

Having started training as a mechanical engineer for grain storage and processing, the student quickly realized that the chosen profession was uninteresting. It is not surprising that the diploma received was not useful to the future comedian.

But thanks to his student life, Dmitry got into the KVN Academy team. A young man with an original, catchy appearance and an excellent sense of humor performed successfully on stage. By the way, according to Dmitry, he began his studies at an acting school. True, the young man soon realized that he was not meant to play on the theater stage. The talent of a comedian turned out to be much brighter and more promising than the possibility of a career as an actor.

After Coco

The affair with Coco was productive and stormy, but lasted only a year. After Dmitry Pavlovich, Coco Chanel had a short affair with the poet Pierre Reverdy. Chanel maintained friendly relations with the Russian prince.

In 1926, Dmitry Pavlovich in Biarritz married a beautiful, rich American woman, Audrey Emery, who converted to Orthodoxy under the name Anna and received the title of Most Serene Princess Romanovskaya-Ilyinskaya from the head of the Russian Imperial House in exile, Grand Duke Kirill Vladimirovich. In the 1920s in Europe, Dmitry Pavlovich participated in monarchist and patriotic movements (including playing a significant role in the formation of the Young Russians movement).

In 1928, their son Pavel was born. Soon after his birth, the couple separated, but the divorce was officially filed only in 1937. Dmitry Pavlovich lived in the Norman castle of Beaumesnil, which he bought in 1927, then for health reasons he moved to Switzerland. Grand Duke Dmitry Pavlovich died in 1942.

Dmitry Pavlovich's son, Pavel, or Paul Ilyinsky, who has lived to this day, was a respected regional politician in the United States - he was repeatedly elected mayor of Palm Beach in Florida, one of the richest and most prosperous cities in America.

Dmitry Romanov was born on January 8, 1985 in Odessa. From a young age, those around him were amazed at the incredible sense of humor of the boy, who with just his smile could make many laugh until they dropped. Even then it was clear that such an open and cheerful person would have a bright future.

Creativity and humor

The comedian’s career, which started in student KVN, was developed by participating in the Major League of the Club of the Cheerful and Resourceful. Dmitry Romanov became part of the “Republic Shkid” team.

After performing on the stage of the Major League, the artist ends up in the Odessa branch of the Comedy Club. Having gained experience performing on stage, together with his friend Evgeniy Voronetsky, Dmitry participated in the TNT channel show “Laughter without rules.” The duo of young stand-up comedians was called “Made by Hand.”

After winning the show, the guys became residents of the “Slaughter League” on the same “TNT”. All this time, Dmitry lived in his homeland, coming to the capital of Russia to film. In 2010, the artist moved to Moscow.

In 2013, thanks to the idea of Ruslan Bely, a new comedy show “Stand Up” was launched. Dmitry Romanov receives an invitation to become a participant and gets the opportunity to perform solo with his own jokes.

In an interview, Romanov said that his first appearance on stage was carefully rehearsed in front of friends, so the comedian did not worry about the project and instantly gained success with the audience.

Creative growth

Together with Evgeniy Voronetsky, Dmitry participated in the TNT channel show “Laughter without Rules,” where he began to develop and received special popularity and love from the audience in stand-up.

After the victory, the artist was in such projects as: “Laughter without Rules”, “Slaughter League”, “Comedy Battle”, “Bunker News”, “Faina Ukraina”. His performances were noted by one of the Comedy Club residents and invited to a casting in Moscow. The young man decided to pack his things and savings and leave to conquer larger cities.

Thanks to the idea of Ruslan Bely, a new comedy show “Stand Up” was launched in 2013. Dmitry Romanov was invited to become his site and perform solo with his own monologues. It was a revolution in the artist’s life, a dream come true and self-realization.

In an interview, Romanov admitted that his first performance on the big stage was carefully rehearsed in front of friends, and his grandmother helped write the text with jokes. Thanks to the support of his family, the comedian did not worry and quickly gained success and recognition from the audience. Now the first connoisseurs of the artist’s jokes are visitors to small venues, concerts and bars in the capital, where Dmitry is invited to perform. His work continues to attract a lot of stand-up connoisseurs, and his positive humor and sincerity bring popularity.

In his monologues, the artist easily jokes about his height and appearance, about relationships, about everyday problems that are familiar and close to everyone. Without hesitation, Dmitry laughs and talks about his Odessa past, about the resourcefulness, practicality and cunning of the Jews. Popular topics about football and life observations also become the basis for numerous jokes.

The comedian does not like to raise topics of religion, death, politics, so he tries to avoid such topics. He believes that society in Russia is conservative and perceives such jokes negatively.

Personal life

In his monologues, Dmitry often touches on the topic of relationships with girls. In fact, things are going well for the artist with love. In the summer of 2020, the young man married Kristina Talyzina, who is three years younger than her husband.

Kristina is from Krasnoyarsk. Having received a diploma in finance from the Siberian Aerospace University, the girl moved to Moscow in 2010, where she met Romanov. The artist’s wife, like her husband, played in KVN as part of the Malina team. Therefore, according to Dmitry’s stories, the girl perfectly understands her husband’s creativity and humor.

On her Instagram page, Christina promotes her own blog in Stories. In addition, the girl positions herself as a copywriter and organizer of online training marathons in astrology.

The young couple travels a lot around the world. Photos with picturesque landscapes and happy lovers against their background in different countries fill accounts on VKontakte and Instagram.

Having visited America, Romanov attended concerts of local stand-up comedians and adopted the experience of foreign colleagues. True, Dmitry noted that he understood little from the comedians’ monologues, since the level of English was frankly lame. But the young man got the opportunity to observe how the artists behaved on stage and interacted with the audience.

“Every monologue contains approximately 50% truth”

Romanov also played a nurse in the TV series “Interns.”
Still from the film - How has your humor changed since the days of “Slaughter League”, in which you played 8 years ago?

- Hard question. Somehow my humor changed and moved. It’s hard to keep track, so much has been written during this time. At the same time, I tried to maintain the style and maintain the core: there was no such thing that I joked about one thing, and now about another. I joke about topics that are around us. Family and relationships. The question of nationalities. Alcohol and hangover. Sports and the army. Tourism. I develop them. I try to remove vulgarity and jokes below the belt from the texts. Lately I’ve been especially actively moving away from this.

—Who is usually the first listener to a monologue: a girl, a mirror, a cat?

— The first listener is the viewer. Almost every day we perform in small clubs or bars, these are called “tech parties”. About 50-60 people come, we perform in front of them and thus check the jokes. This is quite enough. We hone it, add it, tweak it, and then go out into the big hall. We record broadcasts - we go to perform in cities, we perform in halls with thousands of people.

— Are there any taboo topics for you?

— Our society is quite conservative, so it is not always ready to accept jokes related to religion or death. I try to avoid them.

— Has it ever happened when an old Jew or a young Russian stood up in the hall, not understanding the joke, and threw a bottle at you?

- There is no such. But sometimes adults take humor seriously, at face value. They see the rationale behind this. They write complaints about the channel: “You mentioned the name Valery in your number, my name is Valery - now I have mental trauma.” Different things happen. There are a lot of strange people. First of all, you need to understand that we are making humor and not take it to heart.

After a period of hard work as part of the “Stand up” team, Dmitry unexpectedly decides to leave the project. According to the artist, the exhausting schedule, endless concerts and the need to write jokes, which have turned into a conveyor belt, exhaust the author’s creative potential.

In addition, the young man faced health problems. Romanov was diagnosed with an intervertebral hernia. Then the comedian slows down the pace of touring activity and leaves for a six-month vacation. Quoting Dmitry, he considered himself one of the wrong Jews who eat pork.

However, having learned about the diagnosis, Romanov, on the recommendation of a specialist who practices yoga with the artist, pays attention to his diet. Simply put, the comedian becomes a vegetarian, just like his wife. A little later, the young man also gave up alcohol.

Childhood and youth of Dmitry Romanov

Romanov was born on January 8, 1985 in Odessa. Since childhood, he amazed his family and friends with his sharp mind and good sense of humor. The boy had extraordinary facial features - beautiful eyes and an infectious smile. Already in childhood, many believed that this child would be able to achieve a lot in life.

Dmitry Romanov entered the Academy of Food Technologies, majoring in mechanical engineering. Already at the academy, everyone noticed the artistry of the young man, and soon Romanov began playing in the KVN team. As he himself notes, it was in the KVN team that he realized that he had chosen the wrong specialty, the wrong calling.

The team's performances were extremely popular, thanks to the artistry of Dmitry Romanov. He knew how to infect the audience with his cheerful laughter, smile, sharp and original jokes and energy. The audience liked the performances so much that his jokes were recorded and then listened to and quoted.

The star did not work a single day in his specialty, and as he himself claims, he received his diploma as a tribute to his parents. Constant performances, rehearsals, work at the Comedy Club in Odessa, on radio and television occupied all his days. In his free time, he wrote monologues and jokes.

The artist performed at many corporate events, weddings and parties. Income was not the main thing, the main thing was the audience, ready to listen to the young artist. And it was thanks to this experience that Dmitry Romanov realized that it was the solo performance in front of the audience that he liked more than anything else.

Childhood, youth and career development

From early childhood, the boy Dima was distinguished by his charm and good sense of humor. The love of jokes was instilled in him by his grandmother, who, in fact, was involved in raising the future artist. Romanov grew up in a friendly Jewish family, but events occurred that forced his parents to divorce. Despite this circumstance, relatives continued to actively support each other, and often gathered for general meetings where Dima could perform and make people laugh. It was from this moment that the boy’s love for large audiences and performances began to awaken.

After graduating from an ordinary Odessa school without much choice, Romanov entered the Academy of Food Technologies as a mechanical engineer, because it was located closest to home. In his first years, the future artist realized that his decision was reckless, and he began to participate more in student KVN. A successful performance, bright appearance, and sparkling humor helped him advance to the “Republic Shkid” team and participate in the club’s major league.

The artist did not regret at all that he received a technical education, but chose a completely different field by vocation. He devoted all his time to work at performances, rehearsals, the Comedy Club in Odessa, on radio and television. In his free time, he continued to write his own monologues and jokes.

Speeches by Dmitry Romanov

Romanov's performances are always very warmly received by the public. His humor is simple, without vulgarity or rudeness. Here's what Dmitry Romanov says about forbidden topics for jokes: “Forbidden topics for jokes: I allow myself to joke on any topic, but in the company of friends. There are a lot of topics on stage that I don’t joke about yet.”

In his rooms he talks mainly about himself, his friends and his girlfriend. Dmitry is not afraid to laugh at himself and his shortcomings, he is not shy about saying something personal, it is this openness that the viewer likes. Romanov openly talks about the fact that he is Jewish.

His most popular speeches are: “About Jews, Russians and his girlfriend”, “About Birthday”, “About freebies and their lovers”, “About gifts, holidays with a girl and nicknames in relationships”, “Awkward situations”, “ About the first date, lies in relationships and girls” and many others.

His jokes are popular and published on many blogs and forums. For example: “When you come to the hospital, you need to put on shoe covers, and these shoe covers are paid. One pair of shoe covers costs 5 rubles. On average, 800 people come to the hospital per day. It’s not that I like to count other people’s money, but quite by accident I counted everything. It turns out, purely on shoe covers, one and a half million rubles a year. Agree, it’s not a bad boot turn?”

Dmitry Romanov was received very warmly by the public. Many spectators come to his performances. He is popular on YouTube, TNT channel, RenTV, NTV and Ukrainian channels. His work is discussed in blogs and forums. Creativity is not understood by everyone and not everyone likes it, but despite this, his talent is recognized by everyone without exception.

The beginning of the creative career of Dmitry Romanov

The beginning of Dmitry’s creativity is considered to be participation in “Comedy Odessa” and “Comedy Kyiv”. Then he was invited to become a professional author for a new project on the TNT channel.

Romanov worked in the new direction of Stand Up. This trend was just gaining popularity in Russia; the artist had to perform a solo number in front of an audience. And artistry and the ability to improvise were of great importance for a successful performance. It was in this direction that Dmitry became famous.

The artist often talks about how he came to this genre: “I came to stand-up because I wanted to perform in a solo humorous genre, it turned out that it has a name”; “Real stand-up is when what the comedian says catches you, when you can somehow relate to it. When there is life in it, and not fictional situations about two friends at a disco or about Mayakovsky’s meeting with Stalin.”

This was followed by participation in such projects as: “Laughter without Rules”, “Slaughter League”, “Comedy Battle”, “Bunker News”, “Faina Ukraine”.

In 2011-2012, Dmitry Romanov performed in such projects as: “Stand-up evening”, “Central park”, “Stand-up project”. He performed together with Ruslan Bely and Vyacheslav Komissarenko in “solo performances for two”. Dmitry participated in the Big Difference festival and also worked on the sitcom It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Personal life of Dmitry Romanov

Despite his busy schedule and constant performances, the star has a girlfriend and in his speeches he often talks about his relationship.

But whether this is true or not remains a mystery. In one of the interviews, he said that he was happy in his relationship and all the other girls did not bother him at all.

Family is still the most important thing in the artist’s life. Dmitry's beloved grandmother is always waiting for him at home, as is his grandson, who has a wonderful sense of humor. In his numbers, Romanov jokes that it is his grandmother who is the author of his texts.

Dmitry Romanov now

Since the fall of 2012, Dmitry Romanov has been constantly participating in the project on the TNT channel “Stand Up”, and is often a guest on the “Comedy Club” program. His humor is always popular; Dmitry is invited to perform at many private events and holidays. The most important thing for Romanov is still the love of the viewer; it is the absence of an audience that he fears most.

Romanov was born and raised in Odessa, but left his hometown for a project on TNT, and now lives and works in Moscow. But he does not forget about his homeland, where his work is loved, and often goes to Ukraine for concerts. Tickets for performances are bought up as soon as the arrival of a star becomes known.
