The only one of Laima’s relatives who had anything to do with art was her grandmother, who sang in the church choir. When little Laima was three years old, their entire family left provincial Cesis for the capital of the republic, Riga. She had to live in a small one-room apartment, and there was a large family: her parents, Laima, her two older sisters (one and a step-sister) and an older brother, also a step-brother. She didn’t even think of herself as an artist and was going to become a doctor, and after graduating from eight years of school she entered medical school. And this despite the fact that at the age of 12 she made her debut on stage during a competition for young vocalists at the House of Culture of the Riga VEF plant. There she was awarded a diploma and accepted into the big band, with which she immediately began performing. Having become a medical school student, fifteen-year-old Laima passed a competition and became a soloist of the Riga Radio and Television Orchestra under the direction of Raimonds Pauls.

1979 - Laima Vaikule began her career in the popular variety show “Juras Perle” (“Sea Pearl”). At first she was trusted to sing in a dance orchestra, but over time she was appointed soloist. An intelligent and capable girl, she understood that in order to achieve something more, she should get a specialized education and in 1984 she entered GITIS in the directing department.
