Media: Vladimir Yaglych and Oksana Domnina are preparing for the wedding

Biography

The famous Russian athlete, figure skater Oksana Domnina managed to achieve considerable career heights. The girl has many victories and awards to her name. But athletes who managed to reach the Olympus themselves know: the price of achievement is the abandonment of childhood and many simple human joys available to millions of their peers.

Oksana Domnina was born in August 1984 in ancient Kirov, a town located on the Vyatka River and famous for its Dymkovo toy.

In addition to Oksana, sister Tatyana was raised in the family.

The parents brought the girl to the skating rink when she was barely 6 years old. After 3 months, the capable and flexible Oksana was selected for open ice dancing. At the age of 8, the young figure skater had her first partner, Anton Ryabov. And Irina Fedorovykh became Domnina’s first coach.

Roma and Oksana met after a long separation

The famous figure skater believes that her boyfriend Roman Kostomarov looks better in real life than on the screen.

She flew to Moscow in a great mood. After an unsuccessful start to the season, Oksana DOMNINA, together with Maxim SHABALIN, created a small sensation - our skaters became world champions in ice dancing, although duets from the USA and Canada were considered the main favorites. Moreover, Oksana’s partner performed at the injections.

Soon after arriving in Moscow, Shabalin flew to Germany to treat his long-suffering knee. Therefore, Oksana Domnina, when meeting with a journalist, had to take the rap for two.

— How do you feel about the talk that the judges allegedly played along with you at the World Championships in Los Angeles?

- Absolutely calm. We have such a sport that they talk about refereeing all the time. Some people like it when Russian skaters win, but others don’t. Let them discuss.

— When it became clear that you were the first, did you want to jump to the ceiling?

- There was no crazy joy. Rather, I felt devastated. Too much effort had to be spent to win - both physical and moral. We started galloping and jumping already in Moscow. At Sheremetyevo airport, fans greeted us with huge posters, and children from Odintsovo even read poems in our honor.

Sometimes DOMNINA and KOSTOMAROV use a bathtub instead of a sofa

(Domnina and Shabalin trained in the town of Odintsovo near Moscow before leaving for America. - S.D. ) It was very pleasant. A few days later we went to a reception with the governor of the Moscow region, Boris Gromov . He presented me and Maxim with the Order “For Useful!”, and the President of the Federation Valentin Piseev and his wife Alla Shekhovtsova with another order - “Thank you!”
By the way, we have already been to a reception with Gromov before - after winning the 2008 European Championship. It would be nice to meet now after Vancouver. God loves a trinity. — Why was Shekhovtsova awarded? She is also a figure skating judge and was part of the referee team at the World Championships. But the judge is supposed to be neutral.

- Oh I do not know. It’s just that Valentin Nikolaevich came to the reception with her.

The offense has passed

A couple in love loves to take a ride with the breeze

Alexey Gorshkov , the former coach of Domnina and Shabalin, said that when they left Russia for the USA last May, the authorities in the Moscow region were very sensitive about this. The fact is that both Oksana and Maxim were allocated apartments in Odintsovo, the guys were given excellent conditions for training, and they suddenly left.

— Oksana, how did they try to restrain you? What did they offer?

- Well, they didn’t hold our hands. But many sports leaders in the region were unhappy that we did not inform them. When they found out, it was already too late. The President of the Figure Skating Federation of the Moscow Region Tigran Karkhanov , I remember said: if we don’t succeed in America, we ourselves will be to blame - because we are leaving our native lands. But if we win, it will be our common victory. Now, when we met after the World Cup, he reminded Maxim and me of these words. Now there seems to be no resentment.

— You won gold, but Yana Khokhlova and Sergei Novitsky, who flew to Los Angeles as European champions, took only sixth place. Didn't their result surprise you?

— You know, the competition at the World Championships was so intense that it was simply impossible to predict the winner in advance. Any couple from the top six could qualify for medals. Some managed to conquer them, but others did not. This is a sport.

— What is your relationship with Yana Khokhlova? When she and Novitsky won the European Championships in Helsinki, did you feel any envy?

“Even though we are rivals, our relationship is normal.” Yana and Sergey deservedly won in Helsinki. But our couple was unlucky at “Europe”: Maxim was injured and we withdrew from the competition.

Stagnation, American style

— They told me that a month after your stay in America, you almost went back.

- At first everything was terrible. You can’t rent an apartment, you can’t buy a car either. And in the place where we ended up, Glen Mills, no one walks. Everyone drives cars. In America, if you do not have a residence permit, your rights are violated. I ended up buying the car, but it was registered under a completely different name. And the apartment, according to the documents, is rented by a completely different person. In the first days and weeks, I cried into my pillow, I wanted to tell this America - with all its correct laws - to hell. And return home.

By the way, it’s very cold at the skating rink where we train. There is virtually nowhere to change clothes. Everything is very modest, and they treat us not as kindly as in Odintsovo.

— Your coaches, Natalya Linichuk and Gennady Karponosov, train with Americans Tanit Belbin and Benjamin Agosto. What is it like to train on the same rink with your main competitors?

- Not easy. It happened that Ben noticed some of our mistakes and told Karponosov . For example, the path of steps did not seem very expressive to him. And we made adjustments. I, too, sometimes, in moments of relaxation, watched the American programs and found some rough edges in them - Tanya and Ben didn’t do hooks and detours that way. I spoke about this to Natalya Linichuk . So they kept an eye on each other, giving hints along the way. We even went to the restaurant a couple of times together, the four of us. In general, Belbin and Agosto are good guys.

Oksana is in charge in the kitchen, but Roman will never refuse to make scrambled eggs for his beloved

— At the Turin Olympics, these Americans took second place, losing only to Tatyana Navka and Roman Kostomarov.
Your pair was only ninth in Turin. How did you manage to make such a dramatic leap to the top? - He’s not that harsh, after all, three years have passed. In 2007, we were fifth at the World Championships and were very upset. Then everyone noted that we performed great, especially in the free program, but the judges were clearly stingy with their scores. I had to miss last year's World Championships due to Maxim's injury. But before that we were first in Europe. But the Americans, as it turns out, are experiencing stagnation. Just like in the glorious Soviet times. (Laughs.)

— How do you have fun in your American village?

— Sometimes I go to the city. Philadelphia is 40 minutes away by car. I visited the Rodin Museum and the Art Museum. I’m also going to New York to see some skater friends from Ukraine.

— Oksana, do you think Maxim did the right thing by agreeing to compete at the 2008 European Championships three weeks after the operation? You became champions, but Shabalin still has problems with his knee.

— A very difficult question. Probably, if Maxim had not rushed back then and had met all the recovery deadlines, he would not have suffered now. But these are just assumptions. Even doctors can't really explain what's going on with his knee. After the first operation, a second one was required, but problems remain. In Los Angeles, my partner performed at injections.

— During training, did he often complain about pain in his leg?

- He didn't complain. He simply said that it hurt, and then he was released from training. I know Maxim well, he is not a whiner. It’s written all over his face when it hurts, but he endures it anyway. Sometimes I myself told Natalya that Maxim needed to be taken care of.

Oksana to Roma: “I wonder what they write about us on the Internet?”

I'll be back after Vancouver

- Are you in Moscow now. Where did you stop?

— At the apartment of my boyfriend, Roman Kostomarov . Unfortunately, Roma was busy with the Ice Age show and often disappeared in training. And soon he will go on tour with other project participants. So I don’t know yet whether we will be able to get out somewhere together for at least a week.

— Oksana, did you like the way Kostomarov played in the series “Hot Ice”?

— I only watched one episode. In my opinion, Roma looks better in life than on the screen. (Loud laughter.)

— How did he allow you to leave Moscow for America a year ago? You began to see each other extremely rarely.

— Yes, we communicate mainly via the Internet, we arrange video conferences. Before leaving, we discussed this difficult issue with Roma. He is an athlete himself; together with Tanya Navka he won the Olympics. Roma, fortunately, understood me. I left for America not to leave him, but for the sake of success at the Olympic Games in Vancouver. By the way, Navka and Kostomarov were also preparing for their Olympics in the United States. Because their coach, Alexander Zhulin, . If Linichuk and Karponosov lived in Russia, Maxim and I would not have left anywhere.

— And what, Alexey Gorshkov, your former mentor, has completely ceased to suit you?

- He is a good coach, we are grateful to him, but we had to move forward. And I won’t stay in America for a day. As soon as the Olympics are over in Vancouver, I will immediately pack my things and go home.

Piseev does not agree

After the end of the World Championships, the famous figure skater Natalya BESTEMYANOVA made an unexpected statement. She said that DOMNINA and SHABALIN, in her opinion, won in Los Angeles in advance. Our dancers will probably have to pay for this victory at the Games in Vancouver, since the judges will not pull them to the top two times in a row.

We asked the President of the Russian Figure Skating Federation Valentin Piseev to comment on this statement:

— Natalya Bestemyanova’s statement is very strange. She herself, together with Andrei Bukin, won the 1987 World Championships, and a year later became an Olympic champion. There are other examples: Oksana Grischuk - Evgeny Platov, Tatyana Navka - Roman Kostomarov. They also won the year before the Olympics. What is Bestemyanova even talking about? We need to be happy for our people. Her statement is unqualified.

COMPETENT OPINION

Alexander GORSHKOV, Chairman of the Ice Dance Technical Committee of the International Skating Union (ISU), Olympic champion 1976:

— There are always a lot of disputes about dancer competitions. During training, Domnina and Shabalin looked very confident, but our other pair, Khokhlova and Novitsky, unfortunately, made more mistakes than usual. Obviously, this also affected the final result, because the judges attend all training sessions.

Each pair is scored by nine judges. But only five out of nine ratings are taken into account in the calculation, the rest are discarded. The computer program decides which grades will be counted. There has long been talk on the sidelines that someone can manipulate this program, but so far nothing has been proven.

Judges don't decide everything. An important role is played by technical controllers, who assign difficulty levels to each element (the first is the lowest, the fourth is the highest). If the controller makes a mistake several times, even the judges will not be able to help the skater.

Figure skating

The first victory came to the figure skater at the age of 16. Oksana Domnina in 2000 managed to take 8th place at the adult national championship and 9th among juniors. At this moment, the skater’s partner was Ivan Lobanov.

The promising athlete was noticed by the famous coach Alexei Gorshkov and invited her to Odintsovo near Moscow. Here Oksana has a new partner, Maxim Bolotin. With him, the skater reached the final of the Grand Prix among juniors and won a bronze medal at the national junior championship.

But the disagreements that arose did not allow Domnina and Bolotin to continue skating as a pair. In the spring of 2002, the athlete had a new partner - figure skater Maxim Shabalin. With him, the athlete reached the heights she had previously dreamed of.

Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin

In 2003, the couple managed to win leadership among juniors at the world championship. In 2004, she took 2nd place at the Russian Championship, and the next year Domnina and Shabalin snatched gold.

In 2007, at the national championship, the couple managed to reach the highest step of the podium. But at the European Championships, Russian skaters let the French go ahead, receiving an honorary “silver” as a result. Then there was a break. Due to the unfortunate knee injury of Maxim Shabalin, the athletes had to refuse to participate in the world championship.

Gennady Karponosov, Maxim Shabalin, Oksana Domnina and Natalya Linichuk

After rehabilitation, Domnina and her partner again took to the ice, but Gennady Karponosov and Natalya Linichuk became their mentors. Under their leadership, Russian skaters won the Chinese stage of the World Grand Prix “Cup of China”.

In the spring of 2009, the sports biography of Oksana Domnina and the athlete’s partner was enriched with World Championship gold. Thus, the couple became the only one in world figure skating who managed to win both the junior and senior world championships with the same composition. This triumph was marked by the presentation to the skaters of a medal for “Service to the Fatherland”, 2nd degree.

Domnina left big sport with excellent results: she is an Olympic bronze medalist and three-time Russian champion.

When the sporting competitions were left behind, Oksana was invited to the new season of Ice Age. She paired up with actor Vladimir Yaglych. As a result, they became the winners of the project. By the way, the television show changed the life of Oksana Domnina.

In the next season of Ice Age, the figure skater performed with speed skater Ivan Skobrev. And again she took first place.

Then Oksana’s partner became Honored Artist of Russia Daniil Spivakovsky. The couple did not reach the finals.

Oksana's achievements in big sports

The biography of Oksana Domnina began to be replenished with significant victories starting in 2003. It was then that she and her new partner Maxim Shabalin became gold medalists at the World Junior Championships. And the following year they won silver at the Russian Figure Skating Championships.

Next, the tandem of Oksana and Maxim took part in world competitions, where they took an honorable third place. Couples from Canada and Bulgaria took the lead. After this, the European Championships awaited Russian figure skaters. From there, the couple brought silver home, and gold went to athletes from France.

Personal life

In 2007, Oksana began dating Olympic champion Roman Kostomarov. The girl’s fans watched the ups and downs of Domnina’s personal life with considerable interest. The couple lived in a civil marriage for several years. At the beginning of 2011, Domnina gave Kostomarov a daughter, Nastya. But after 2 years, this family faced considerable trials.

Oksana dreamed of a ring and a marriage proposal. But Roman hesitated, citing past experience of an unsuccessful marriage. As a result, quarrels alienated the lovers from each other.

In 2013, Oksana Domnina’s personal life did not leave the top news. The tabloids discussed the details of the new relationship between the famous figure skater and popular actor Vladimir Yaglych. The romance between them broke out on the Ice Age show.

For some time, the Kostomarov-Domnina-Yaglych relationship looked like a love triangle. However, Oksana later denied these rumors, saying that there was no triangle. And the girl’s departure from Roman only at first glance looked impulsive. In fact, it was a balanced and conscious decision.

But having flared up brightly, the romance of Oksana and Vladimir faded just as quickly. Although the actor managed to introduce his beloved to his parents.

Wedding of Oksana Domnina and Roman Kostomarov

To the delight of fans of two talented skaters Domnina and Kostomarov, the favorites were reunited again. But this time they played a wedding and got married in the Church of St. Nicholas in Tolmachi.

It seems that now this marriage, which has gone through difficult trials, has become stronger. At the beginning of 2020, happy parents again celebrated the addition of their family: they had a son, Ilya.

Now the couple spends all their free time together. Oksana takes care of the children herself, without the help of a nanny. The couple's eldest daughter enjoys tennis and dancing.

Oksana’s husband often shares family photos on Instagram. He also pleases fans with videos from rehearsals and performances. And Domnina never ceases to repeat what a sensitive and attentive father Roman is.

Revival of the family

After a short break, in 2014, Oksana Domnina married Roman Kostomarov. The skater’s dream came true: she entered into an official relationship with her lover and even got married in church. The wedding was held for a close circle and a special event was celebrated in an elite Moscow restaurant. Later, in their interview, the newlyweds told how hard their breakup was for them, that only in separation did they both realize how dear they were to each other.

Ksyusha and Roman dream of becoming parents for the second time. This irresistible desire is shared by both spouses. Oksana Domnina claims that with a father like Roman, who earns a decent living and provides for his family, she can safely go on maternity leave. And Kostomarov, in turn, declares that he intends to quickly give four-year-old Nastenka a brother or sister.

At the beginning of 2020, happiness came to the family again - a son, Ilya, was born.

The loving married couple currently lives happily in Sochi, where they take part in an enchanting ice show. Their Deli often spends time with their parents and enjoys skating. Skaters are not against their daughter’s professional career associated with big-time sports. They listen carefully to the desires and dreams of their girl and completely give the baby the right to choose.

Oksana Domnina now

The figure skater did not leave the sport. Today she participates in Ilya Averbukh’s ice productions. Together with her husband, Oksana prepared the program “Romeo and Juliet” in 2020, in which she played the role of the Plague. The show premiered in July 2020.

For the release of the play, a video dedicated to love was shot. In the short film, Roman Kostomarov and Oksana Domnina, Maria Petrova and Alexey Tikhonov, Tatyana Totmyanina and Alexey Yagudin, Maxim Marinin and Natalya Somova told their love story.

In December 2020, the premiere of the play “Alice in Wonderland” took place. Although Domnina did not participate in the production, she came to support her colleagues along with her husband and daughter.

And already in 2020, Averbukh announced the start of a tour of a new project with the loud title “Together and Forever.” The program is dedicated to the 2018 Olympic Games. Ilya and his team decided to express their support for the athletes who were not allowed to compete in this way.

In the performance, the skaters showed how important it is to overcome challenges together and not give up in difficult and unfair situations. Ilya Averbukh invited the dance duet of Alexandra Stepanova and Ivan Bukin, who were suspended from the international tournament, to participate.

Oksana Domnina and Roman Kostomarov went on tour with the team. On April 1, 2020, the tour of Russia ended. And from April 14, “Together and Forever” appears before audiences in Prague.

Early achievements of the figure skater

Together with her first partner, Oksana Domnina achieved small victories. In particular, they became the best couple at competitions in the city of Kirov, where the athlete was born. After some time, the girl changed her partner to the more experienced Ivan Lobanov. Together with him, she won an honorable eighth place at the All-Russian competition for adult figure skaters. At that moment, it seemed, she could not even dream of such an achievement, but she understood that this was the result of enormous work and perseverance. She adopted these qualities from her mother.

The tandem of Oksana Domnina and Lobanov also did not last long, and soon they began performing separately. Ivan took a more experienced figure skater as his partner, and Oksana moved to Odintsovo at the suggestion of one of the best coaches in Russia.

The new mentor paired his ward with Maxim Bolotin. Their tandem became one of the most successful in the figure skating career. Photos of Oksana Domnina and Maxim Bolotin appeared on the covers of popular sports publications with a note that they became bronze medalists at youth figure skating competitions in the Russian Federation.

Even this partner could not stand the steely character of the fragile girl. They had conflicts outside of work and decided to end their union.
