The future composer was born into a Jewish family. Father Yakov Aleksandrovich worked at the Radiodetal enterprise, and mother Svetlana Semenovna was first a laboratory assistant at the SES, and then a housewife. She raised Igor and his sister Alla, who was 5 years younger than her brother.
As a child, Igor was found to have excellent hearing, and the boy was sent to study at a music school. There he learned to play the button accordion, and later mastered the piano. In the 6th grade he created an ensemble that played at dances.

During his life, Krutoy collaborated with many participants in the famous music competition.
