Pasha Technik is a unique event and discovery in the world of domestic rap. More recently, his name began to appear more and more often on the Internet, and his songs began to gain popularity among young listeners. The guy has a shocking image; at concerts he hides his face behind a monkey mask. Most of his tracks have themes of drug use, sexual intercourse, everything that appeals to modern youth. After all, forbidden things are more attractive.

The musician does not hesitate to use profanity in writing lyrics. Despite this, he received his moment of fame in a short time. Duck, who is he? A brilliant performer or a crazy avant-garde artist? Let's start our story from the moment of his birth - on the Fourth of July 1983. The guy is a native Muscovite, his real name and surname is Pavel Ivlev. The future hooligan’s mom and dad were far from the world of music and creative activity and struggled to maintain optimal financial condition. Quite a bit of information is available about his childhood; for a long time, viewers did not even know his real name. Only gradually the veil of secrecy began to open.

The young man's childhood years were spent in a dangerous and criminal area of ​​Moscow - Lefortovo, which in those years was famous for its gangster situation. From an early age, he set out to conquer the streets and disappeared there from morning to night, despite the critical statements of his parents. This is how our hero became acquainted with an immoral lifestyle, constant partying, alcohol and other prohibited substances.

A native Muscovite in one of his interviews said what he associates with his childhood – football, school and glue. The young man was fond of sports, was an avid fan and often went out onto the green lawn. He often had to participate in brawls and street fights with fans of another football club.

While studying in high school, Pasha became interested in rap; his idol and favorite artist at that time was Bad Balanse. It was at this moment that he began to imagine himself on the big stage as a popular performer.

He did not have good grades and studied poorly. He was interested in something completely different - everything that was outside the window, his comrades and street life. As a result, due to poor performance, he was left for the second year. The guy could not pass the transition exams to the 11th grade, so he remained in the tenth. But this did not bother the guy much, after which the future musician left school of his own free will and entered the local technical school.

This became a turning point in his biography. In the new educational institution, the young man finds like-minded people, fellow rap lovers MC Blev and Maxim Sinitsin. Gradually, friendly relations developed between them, and they decided to form their own musical group. The team was named "Container". New lyrics and musical compositions began to appear in large numbers, the main themes in their songs described drugs and promiscuity. Modern youth really liked this image and style. Gradually they began to gain popularity.

When does it go beyond the image - and does it go? Does this image even exist? Therefore, it is best to talk about Pasha, remembering the stories with which his biography is rich and of which every person who spent at least a couple of hours with him has many.

Maybe this doesn't seem all that surprising to you, but that's only because you didn't have the pleasure of seeing this bundle of overeating. I only took third place once, and that was only because I developed otitis media. Then art school, then all sorts of sections - taekwondo, basketball and so on.”

This paragraph, which reads like an excerpt from Limonov’s story, is a post from Pasha Tekhnik’s LiveJournal, entitled “Memoirs.” The text, in addition to the complex history of his mother’s relationship with the Lyubertsy bandit, describes a difficult childhood: ketamine syringes, “the road of the gloomy from the Ice Cube cassette,” the first “departures,” and so on.

It is not possible to verify the authenticity of the story - the Technician is usually reluctant to talk about his childhood. So it is better to perceive this autobiography as a work of fiction, especially since the mythology that has gathered around the Technician has always been no less important than his real person.

Among his rap influences, Pavel named the usual groups for Moscow teenagers of the 90s: Bad Balance, DOB, Slaves of the Lamp. At some point, the love of rap led 13-year-old Technician to the basement on Taganka, where the Rap Recordz office was located. Dmitry “Dime” Nechaev, who ran the label at that time, recalls that at first Pasha came there as a buyer of cassettes, and then he began to bring his own material. His band was called Da Tape Konteyner. Later the name was shortened to Kunteynir.

The technician said that he started recording in 2000, focusing “on all sorts of pussies like Anticon” - it sounds comical, but it shows Pasha as a music lover: not everyone in those years knew about this American indie rap label. The group consisted of two people - the Technician himself and his friend, the rapper Smeshnoy. The latter quickly withdrew from rap, and his place was taken by the second participant, Blev MC. According to legend, they lived in the same building. The technician met him on the staircase, got him high and offered to record a rap - this became Blev’s first musical experience.

The obligatory lo-fi approach to recording is part of Kunteynir's aesthetic. The first album, “Edward Hands Paper Scissors,” was recorded at home using a cheap microphone. Most of its beats were made by Raj, a member of the Canadian expat group DaBro. Dime corrects that Raj didn’t “make” the beats specifically for the Technician, they just somehow fell into his hands - and that’s how they ended up on the album.

In form, Kunteynir’s debut work is an underground boom-bap with vinyl hiss, over which flies the accelerated thought of the Technician, who wrote verses to all members of the group in one sitting. Absurd funny rap, a barely rhymed stream of consciousness, and even ugly recorded - in that era, many were surprised that this could be published on a CD and sold in stores (Dime, however, does not recall sales figures with pleasure: 500-600 copies ). The cover of the disc was also good: printed on expensive business card cardboard, it depicted a pink stamp.

“The music was strange, but there was a lot of pleasant madness in it, and not outright thrash, as in later work,” recalls The Flow editor-in-chief Andrei Nikitin, then a journalist for the website Rap.ru, about the first Kunteynir album. He also conducted his first big interview with the Technician.

It still reads like countercultural prose. Pasha boasts that he “gets stoned like shit before performances,” lists the types of marijuana that must be consumed in order to understand his album, and utters a prophetic phrase (remember, we’ll come back to it later): “If the whole club pokes us at us, it will be the most awesome show of our lives.”

Reality did not adjust to expectations for long: at the presentation of the Smoke Screen album in the same 2004, the opening act Kunteynir was given a cold reception. A recording of their concert has been preserved: when Pasha hands a microphone to a listener in the crowd, she joyfully yells: “Fuck you!” (1:47 mark).

“The hip-hop.ru crowd knew them, but they were not famous,” recalls Slim, one of the Veil members, who later also recorded a feature with Kunteynir. “It was such experimental hip-hop, in any case, it was interesting to me. I really liked the musical component. At that time I was still releasing albums, trying to create something like a label - I wanted to release their third album, but they didn’t come to an agreement. As a result, the owner of the 2-99 label, Georg Korg, gave them a “fix” of $300, and they were released by him.”

The technician in those years loved to stage stage performances to piss off people who came to listen to terrible rap. He especially appreciated freestyle battles (Pasha’s rap was and remains freestyle): watch the recording of the group’s performance at one of them at the Kommuna club and be surprised at how much Technik stood out from the rest.

One of the organizers of Kunteynir’s early concerts was Ruslan Munnibaev, now the concert director of Kasta and the author of The Flow. At that time he worked as a bartender at the Third Way club. “I wrote the Technique myself and suggested doing a concert. I separately asked him to perform the song “Faggots, raise your hands,” but it seems that this did not happen. A lot of people came to the concert, but I remember that it lasted about 20 minutes.”

Photographer Anton “Scut36” Volkov recalls how Pasha, in his constant monkey mask, warmed up the American rapper Jeru The Damaja in “Commune”. “Pasha jumped in front of the not very high stage of the club and tried to snatch the microphone from the hands of the surprised rapper. After that, backstage, he took off his mask, grabbed a beer glass standing next to him and took a savory sip from it. The glass, as it turned out, served as an ashtray.”

Later, Volkov undertook to make a website for the Kunteynir group. The technician sent the following specifications: the site should have two sections: “Pukeshka” and “Rooks”.

For the group’s next album, “Into the Shit” (2005), Technik already wrote almost all the beats himself. Musically, everything became more interesting: extremely underrated as a beatmaker, Technician decorated the songs with an experimental IDM sound. Listen to the six-minute acid-jazz instrumental “Chishirsky Mix” or play it to your friends at a house party and ask them to guess the author - it’s unlikely that any of them will even guess that this is not an artist from the Warp label, but the person who launched the phrase “San, dick” among the people suck.”

Having once called himself “the king of the underground,” Technician, although he stood apart, was friends with other musicians of the then underground wave. He could be seen at the concert of Andrei Bledny's group Ezekiel 25:17, with another group, the art-rap project Krovostok, he was even going to write a joint album:

“He calls me and says that he met the guys from Tekstilshchiki, the main one is called Shilo. And I knew that they had an “Anti-tank grenade” project. They released tapes with their own money and sold them, and then “Afisha” wrote about them. It was a dubious work, but hints of early Krovostok can be heard there. Well, Pasha says: “This is awesome, this is a gap! They made the Krovostok project! Let's release a double album - Kunteynir and Krovostok!” Unfortunately, at that time such a release was technically impossible. In the end, either the Technician did not deliver the disc to me, or I did not listen to it, but did not appreciate it. And a couple of months later, the Krovostok boom began among the office plankton.”

The technician always had a soft spot for battles - he just understood them very differently. Many have seen the legendary video where he flies into the freestyle jam of Dunya and Noize MC like an alien element. Few people know that in 2004 he participated in the 5th Official Battle on hip-hop.ru, where he dissed Drago and Steam, as well as a user named Strike, now known as Zamai. Another battle (5 Unofficial) The technician judged - and after he came up with the theme “My clitoris is bigger than yours” for one of the rounds, many participants refused to send their tracks.

The next albums of the Kunteynir group - “Weight” (2006) and “Blevburger” (2007) - continued the sound aesthetics of the album “Into the Shit”, only over time the absurd humor disappeared, and in its place came naturalism, sometimes completely repulsive. But the group's releases spawned a wave of followers who loved the idea that rap could bypass the song form; that it is not at all necessary to write texts in advance, but it is more fun to compose them right in the process; that everything can be recorded and mixed as lo-fi as possible.

Pasha’s image was also captivating: he sometimes recalls, not without pride, that he taught rappers to wear “apparent” fan clothes - Thor Steinar, Stone Island, CPCompany. Here is a quote from Maxim Sinitsyn, the third member of Kunteynir: “Previously, the rapper had pipes and a cap, tailored to the American style. We were one of the first to jump off this topic.”

The Moscow collectives Black Economy / Market Relations, the project from Bratsk Buchenwald Flava and the Petrozavodsk group the Chemodan Clan, whose early work was strongly inspired by the Technician, fed on the ideas of Kunteynir. “It started a whole boom of weird home DIY rap,” Dime recalls. “And he eventually drove people to rap concerts who, just a decade ago, were the main antagonists of rap culture as a whole. No matter how strange this fact may be, it still counts towards the culture as a whole.”

In the second half of the 2000s, the Technician himself became the object of the “subway” cult. He was even brought to television: the St. Petersburg Channel Five showed a report by Kirill Ivanov (now you know him as the frontman of the group SBPC) about the underground rap of that time, the heroes of which were Bonch Bru Bonch, Mikhail Krasnoderevshchik and Pavel himself. Pavel here poses against the backdrop of Khrushchev and speaks literally two sentences - but in the second the word “dudka” appears.

It is better to read the posts from there as literature, keeping in mind that hyperbolization and reduction to the absurd are the main artistic techniques of Kunteynir. “Three Hudson taxi drivers carry Blyov out at a stop near the Semyonovskaya metro station, and he salutes with his right hand and tears up his shoulder straps.” “Yesterday, instead of a ball, riot police soldiers took the dude and I onto the bus. Not only is it fucking bad to hang out with assholes in little pants in nothing but bunk shorts, but also 100 rubles for admitting us to the sobering-up center.”

In 2008, Technician went to prison under Article 228 - not surprising for a man who once said: “Drugs don’t play any role at all in our music. But in life it’s the main thing.”

The Technician gave many interviews about his stay in the Karelian zone: he recalled how he made boots for pigeons from bread crumbs and how prisoners sewed their mouths shut as a sign of protest. There is also a touching detail that well reveals the Technician’s relationship with the fans of the “first wave”: one day he received a package from a certain Valentin, which he was surprised by. During the prison period, Pasha’s cult only developed and strengthened: the album “5 Years”, released before his imprisonment, is memorable for us with the music of beatmaker Jackson Chrome, who later made a name for himself on the electronic scene under another pseudonym - Lapti. At his instigation, Technician even appeared on the main music resource in the world, the Pitchfork website: there he appeared in an article about Russian beats electronics, where the Kunteynir group was immediately called legendary, and the album “5 years” was called a masterpiece.

After serving four years, Technician was released from prison in 2013 and did several things. Once - he performed at a club for several hundred teenage football fans who, as it turned out, were waiting for his arrival. Two - released an album on Central Administrative Okrug Records, which was then headed by Ptah. Three - gave an interview to Afisha, where he outlined his course: “I personally just want to get money from this. I think we deserve it already.”

Four - went to Versus.

The performance of the Technique at the first offline battle of Versus cannot be retold, it’s easier to watch (fortunately, the entire battle lasts about 20 minutes). According to the recollections of critic Dani Pornorap, who selected the artists for that season, Pasha agreed almost immediately, but asked to give him “a woman or a disabled person” as his opponent. The option of pitting MC Anyuta against him was considered, but in the end they chose Brol, a St. Petersburg MC with an underground past. The Technician arrived at the event in an altered state.

“We’re late,” Danya recalls. “I lead him through the crowd to the stage, he whispers in my ear: “Bro, I’m on acid.” The crowd sees the Technician, and everyone starts yelling: “Pasha, Pasha!” And he says to me: “Fuck, bro, I crap myself.”

The rest is history. At some point in the battle, the Technician turned all the battle rap fans who came to watch Oxxxymiron fight Dunya against him. He took off his pants, showed the audience his penis through his underpants, and they - as Pavel foresaw in that very first interview in 2004 - began to shout: “Fuck it! Fuck it.” As a result, the victory was given to Brolu, but this performance laid the first foundation for the future Internet popularity of Technician.

In the first years after his release, Technician managed to become a grassroots Internet star: he recorded feats with everyone for $50, filmed congratulations and video messages - the peculiarity of which was that they almost always insulted the recipients - and made funny advertisements for clothing stores. He was a star on MDK, willingly gave interviews and flooded YouTube with videos “Pasha Technician watches / tells / congratulates / chooses a girl.” The man born to become a YouTube star, the genius of the flourishing “reaction” format, seems to have finally waited for his finest hour.

The technician found fans in the most unexpected environments. If we can explain the fan love of Feduk (who, for a moment, began his performance on Versus with the phrase: “I came here to avenge Technique”) and the respect of LSP (who once long ago recorded Kunteynir-like rap as part of the TO Lopata group), then Technician’s fraternization with Pharaoh or Face’s enthusiastic reaction to his video: “Pashok is a legend!” It’s already more difficult to comprehend.

In the second half of the “tenths,” Technician managed to get married, travel around the country with concerts, shoot a video with Epifantsev, and even record the viral underground hit “Need Xanax.” It’s sad, but it was he who actually became the ambassador of the drug alprazolam, which was invented to treat severe depression and panic attacks, but is used by rappers for other purposes. Romanticized the drug, you say? Watch the video where the freshman Lizer comes to meet the Technician, who is experiencing severe “departures” at that moment. I'm sure no one would want to feel the same.

Pasha also always spoke openly about his pharmaceutical addiction, calling himself a “pharmacy cowboy,” calling Xanax “the devil’s toy,” and recalling several years lost from life because he overdid it with the “pharmacy.” There is, for example, the following quote: “He fucked up Polkhaty, kicked out Karina (Pasha’s wife - The Flow’s note) for some reason, lived with one mephedrone pussy. In general, I don’t like to remember that moment.” There were also absolutely terrible stories about how he almost died after falling asleep in the bathtub - his wife helped, breaking down the door, taking him out of the water and putting him in rehab.

As a person who filmed several video interviews with the Technician, where they also talked about drugs, I can note that his relationship with drugs was most likely built on the Marilyn Mans principle “I don’t love drugs, but they love me.” During the filming of the first “Vpiska” with him, our entire group went into the Lefortovo forest park, and the first thing that greeted us there was a bookmark with stamps, which ended up under the feet of one of Pasha’s friends. The further fate of the find is unknown to me.

When did Pasha’s fame in “grassroots YouTube” grow into All-Russian fame? When YouTube received a massive request for crazy and mocking content. In 2020, Medium Quality, a digital production company of TV producer Vyacheslav Dusmukhametov, launched Big Russian Boss Show - a Russian analogue of the Eric Andre show, where guests were cheerfully humiliated. The technician became a guest of his third season - and looked there as if he had come to his home; Many people remember that project because of the releases with his participation.

In 2020, Medium Quality began filming its own show, Technician - it was released irregularly, and the episodes were either successful or unsuccessful (it depended mainly on the state of the presenter). Perhaps the story of the Technician should be told as a story of victory over circumstances - on the other hand, it is the story of one big illogical contradiction. I remember Pasha’s performance at the “Pain” festival several years ago: throughout his entire set (as always, in extreme improvisation mode), a man in a monkey mask threatened someone, called the audience a “fucking scam,” and invited the invisible enemy to come out “one at a time.” and “taste some dick.” At the end, he affectionately said: “What are you talking about, these are jokes, I love you all - how many of you are here? The team is being revived and releasing a new album, “5 Years,” which featured songs that were written before their imprisonment. Four years later he is released on parole. Our hero served his entire sentence with dignity and came out with greater popularity than he had previously. In 2017, the group ceased to exist, but its members managed to maintain friendly relations.

It was marked by the release of the album “Goose Statistics”. The compositions included in it mixed Ivlev’s specific humor and so-called freaky rap.
