Daniil Ilchenko was born on December 25, 1894 in the town of Zolochev, Kharkov provincial district, into the family of a railway worker.
From the age of 10 he worked as a shepherd, a watchman and timekeeper in coal warehouses, as a railway worker and immediately studied at a rural school, and then at a city school. At the age of 16 he began working as a clerk on the steel road in Kharkov, and in 1911 he entered the evening department of the Kharkov Personal Theater School under the direction of N. N. Marriage to Natalya Terekhova

In 2005, a new actress, Natalya Terekhova, came to the Comedians theater, where the actor served. Ilchenko immediately liked her, but he could not openly show sympathy, because Terekhova was married. Allegedly from a mysterious admirer after the performances, Anatoly presented the girl with soft toys and flowers.
