Alexander Mokhov: biography
Alexander Anatolyevich Mokhov was born on June 22, 1963 in the Vologda region into a family of builders. In 1995 he received the title of Honored Artist of Russia. Alexander Mokhov’s parents were engaged in the construction of the Volga-Baltic Canal, then moved to the Far Eastern region. In the city of Shimanovsk he graduated from school No. 176. The actor fondly recalls his childhood, which he spent with his older twin brothers.
Actor Alexander Mokhov
The father constantly instilled in his children a love of work. They helped with work in the garden and chopped wood. But Mokhov cannot call himself disciplined, since he regularly misbehaved at school. The exact sciences did not appeal to creative people. At the age of 15, Alexander makes a decision that dramatically changes his life. Without graduating from school, the young man moved to Irkutsk to enter the theater school. Despite his young age, Mokhov’s talent was noticed. In 1982, he completed his studies at the Irkutsk Theater School and began participating in productions of the Yuzhno-Sakhalin Theater.
Alexander Mokhov in his youth
Soon the artist joined the ranks of the Soviet army. After demobilization, he returned to the theater stage. Again, a new round of fate awaits him, which began with a vacation in Moscow. At a meeting with friends, Mokhov heard about recruitment at GITIS. The tests were completed successfully. Alexander was accepted into the 3rd year at Oleg Tabakov’s workshop. After graduating from university, the mentor invites you to join the troupe of his Moscow theater studio.
Alexander Mokhov
Later Tabakov said the following about his student:
“Sasha Mokhov from Primorsky Krai. He is an inquisitive, adventurous person, he is one of those who could flee to America. He knows life firsthand, he is multi-talented. The only one who can stop him is himself. He sometimes drives the horse he rides hard, and the horse of fate is very capricious. He has clear masculine expressions on stage - a rare gift. He can be touchingly funny. He works well in school with students. In a word, everything is ahead for him.”
Mokhov's creative biography includes productions at the Moscow Art Theater. Chekhov and the Alexandrinsky Theater in St. Petersburg.

Alexander Anatolyevich is one of those people about whom it can be said that they reached the top of their profession not thanks to, but despite life circumstances. The biography of Alexander Mokhov is a vivid example of how devotion to a dream helps to move mountains.
Movies
Alexander’s film career did not develop as rapidly as it could have. And the reason for this was the actor’s versatility. He could be funny, tragic, serious, wise. It was difficult to classify Mokhov as a comedic or dramatic artist. But it was necessary to choose one direction. Everything fell into place when he played in the 1989 film “Mayhem.” There was a turning point in my career. Mokhov was often invited to auditions and given roles in films.

The actor's filmography is varied. But fans of Alexander Anatolyevich’s talent fell in love with his images from “Grey Wolves”, “The Life and Extraordinary Adventures of Soldier Ivan Chonkin”, “The Barber of Siberia”, “A Man’s Work”, “The Death of Tairov”, “Burnt by the Sun-2” and “Yesenin”. Each time he not only plays the role written for him, but lives it.

Mokhov acts in and participates in theatrical productions, and has also found himself as a director. The debut in this field took place in 2006. My first job was the detective story “Diamonds for Dessert.” Director Mokhov’s creative portfolio already includes more than 10 works, including a documentary film about the teacher “Oleg Tabakov. Lighting up the stars." The series “While the Village Sleeps” and “The Last Janissary” that he shot became popular.

Alexander also tried himself as a TV presenter. For 4 years he hosted the “Rural Hour” program. The artist is often invited as a guest on television shows, including “Circus with the Stars” and “A Day with Badyuk.” A theatrical career occupies most of Mokhov's life. Now he performs on the platform as an artist, a teacher for young talents.
“We need to choose roles, not throw roles, but choose,” Alexander Mokhov said in an interview.
THEATER
In “Tabakerka” Alexander Mokhov had many roles. He was involved in the plays “Crazy Jourdain”, “The Roof”, “The Inspector General”, “Biloxi Blues”, “Sailor Silence”, “Provincial Anecdotes” and many others.
One of the artist’s best works on stage is the role of Oedipus in the production of “Oedipus the King” by the famous Greek director Theodoros Terzopoulos. Mokhov admits: “I never thought that I would play King Oedipus at the Alexandrinsky Theater in St. Petersburg! This is the level that turned my brain 95 degrees in the other direction. I never thought that Sophocles, so far from all of us, would suddenly become so close to me. But, apparently, everything worked out this way, both experience, material, and craft, that this role came to me.”
The actor also participated in productions of the Moscow Art Theater. A.P. Chekhov's "Forest" and "Yu".
According to Alexander Mokhov, he is careful when choosing roles; he is not interested in playing “for show.” “We need to choose roles, not throw roles, but choose,” says the artist. — I went to the first rehearsals of “When I was Dying” with Mindaugas Karbauskis and realized that this was not my material, not my aesthetics. And I didn’t want young artists to see a more established artist’s disagreement with this and that. This is a destructive process, I am categorically against this approach. I honestly told Karbauskis: “I don’t understand, not my material, not my aesthetics.” We understood each other, and I left the project. I think I acted honestly."
In the theatrical environment, Alexander Mokhov is known not only as an actor, but also as a director and teacher.
Personal life
The actor’s personal life is not hidden from the public. Mokhov first got married in 1985 while still studying at GITIS. Tatyana became his wife. The young people met in Khabarovsk. A year later, a son, Semyon, appeared in their family. After 18 years, Mokhov breaks up with his wife because of his new lover, Daria Kalmykova. The chosen one turned out to be 20 years younger than Alexander. But this did not scare them. In 2003, a boy, Makar, was born into a new family. This marriage lasted 10 years, but it was not destined to be the last.

A young girl appeared on the horizon, turning the head of the no longer young Mokhov. The meeting with his third wife, Irina Ogorodnik, took place in 2020 on the set of the series “The Last Janissary,” directed by Alexander Anatolyevich. The 23-year-old actress and singer in one person helped the participants of the film during auditions.

At that time he was still married to Kalmykova. But their relationship could hardly be called family, more like friendship. In addition, the wife has a new lover. Alexander speaks of his new wife as a talented artist, a hardworking and unspoiled girl. A year later, a son, Matvey, was born into the new family. The divorces did not in any way affect Mokhov’s communication with his children, and he also had friendly ties with his ex-wives.
Oleg Menshikov and Anastasia Chernova
The charming actor and favorite of women Oleg Menshikov chose a young attractive girl named Anastasia as his life partner. At first there were rumors that this couple was not destined to be together for long due to the large age difference.
The actor is 23 years older than his chosen one. 15 years have passed, and Menshikov and Chernova are still happy and completely oblivious to the evil tongues. Relatives and friends of this married couple say that they have an exemplary family.
Alexander Mokhov now
Currently, Alexander Mokhov is trying to devote more time to his young wife and little son. The happy family often posts photos of them together. The actor admits that when his older children were born, he was more concerned about his career rather than family life and raising the younger generation.
Alexander Mokhov starred in the series “Route of Death” in 2017
In creative activity, everything goes as usual. Now Mokhov continues to star in the third part of the series “The Secret City”, where he plays the role of Kornilov. Alexander Anatolyevich did not leave the theater stage either. At the Moscow Theater-Studio directed by Oleg Tabakov, he participates in the psychological sketch “Art”.
Love, family
Something is constantly happening in the personal life of Alexander Mokhov. For the first time, he threw in his lot with teacher Tatyana. The girl captivated him with her intelligence, erudition and seriousness; for a long time he did not dare to confess his feelings to her. In 1987, Tatyana and Alexander became the parents of a son, Semyon. He subsequently became a cameraman.
Alexander left his first wife 18 years after the wedding. He realized that he no longer had the same feelings for her. Some time later, Mokhov started a family with the young actress Daria Kalmykova. From the biography of actor Alexander Anatolyevich Mokhov, it follows that in his second marriage he became the father of a son, Makar, born in 2003.
Mokhov began dating the Ukrainian singer Irina Ogorodnik while still married to Daria Kalmykova. He left the family in 2015. Alexander Mokhov’s personal life settled down soon after the divorce. The actor married Irina and in 2020 became the father of a son, Matvey.

DIRECTING
Alexander Mokhov is not only a famous actor, but also a director. He began with productions on the stage of his native “Tabakerka”.
The artist recalls: “For a long time I did not dare to try my hand at directing, I was afraid that it would not work out. Then I realized that it is better to do and regret than not to do and also regret. I gathered the guys, we even sewed the costumes and made the scenery ourselves. We produced the play “The Trial in Closed Doors” by Sartre. The second experience, “Bullets Over Broadway” by Woody Allen, was also a test. Then there was a significant break, and finally, I became interested in directing again and directed “A Doll for the Bride” by Alexander Korovkin.” In 2010, another performance by Alexander Mokhov was released - “Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk” based on N.S. Leskov.
Mokhov’s first film directorial experience was the detective story “Diamonds for Dessert.” This was followed by the films “Teacher in Law”, “Sand Rain”, “Bros”.
In 2011, Alexander Mokhov directed the film “Yeltsin. Three days in August" about the events of 1991. The main roles were played by Dmitry Nazarov, Vladimir Steklov and Alexander Sirin. The film participated in the competition program of the Monte Carlo Film Festival.
In 2013, Alexander co-directed the telenovela “While the Village Sleeps,” and then began working on another large-scale project, the series “The Last Janissary.”
The actor's childhood and youth
He grew up in a friendly family. Besides him, two more older brothers were growing up. The father raised all his children like men. From an early age he instilled in his sons a love of work. When Sasha went to school No. 176, he studied well. But as the actor himself recalls, his behavior was very lame.
Despite this, the boy still graduated from school. Sasha always liked theatrical skills and for the sake of this love he even attended a drama club.
After graduating from school, Alexander did not have a problem choosing a profession. He went to Irkutsk and entered the theater school, which he successfully graduated in 1982. After receiving his diploma, the aspiring artist was drafted into the army. Having been demobilized, Mokhov returned to theatrical activities.
There is a moment in every person’s life that can change their entire future destiny. This is what happened with Alexander Mokhov. He went to the capital to meet close friends. While in Moscow, Alexander heard that GITIS was recruiting.
He submitted documents and was enrolled in the third year of the institute. The group that Sasha ended up in was supervised by Oleg Tabakov. Alexander studied willingly and learned a lot from his creative mentor. He successfully graduated from the institute in 1986.

Career in theater and film work
In 1986, after graduating from GITIS, Mokhov became a member of the troupe of the Moscow Theater Studio. Moreover, Oleg Tabakov himself recommended him for work. Alexander played in many productions at this theater. In parallel with his work at the above-mentioned theater, Mokhov also works at the Chekhov Moscow Art Theater.
In 1989, Mokhov was invited to participate in the filming of the film “Mayhem”. This film became iconic for the artist, because it brought him fame and radically changed Mokhov’s creative destiny.
There are a great many films in which Mokhov starred; his filmography includes more than 80 works. The most memorable are “The Barber of Siberia” (1989), “Truckers” (2001), “Two Fates” (2002), The Station and “The Last Janissary” (2014).
Mokhov also tried his hand at directing. He started this activity in 2006. His first project was the film “Diamonds for Dessert” (2006). Alexander Mokhov also worked as a presenter. He hosted the program “Rural Hour”.
Mokhov also conducts teaching work. He is an acting teacher at the Moscow Art Theater. In 1995, Alexander was awarded the title of Honored Artist of Russia. The actor is currently filming the TV series The Mentalist.
Film career
Alexander Mokhov first appeared on the silver screen in the film-play directed by Vladimir Andreev “Money for Maria” (1985). This was followed by roles in the films “The Journey of Monsieur Perrichon” (1986) and “The Armchair” (1987). The aspiring film actor gave a prominent place in his career to the film “Defender Sedov” (1988) directed by Evgeny Tsymbal, where Alexander played the head of the college of defenders.

However, Mokhov’s real “romance with cinema” began with the crime drama “Lawlessness” (1989; director Igor Gostev), where the actor played the main role (prisoner Veniamin Gendelman, nicknamed Abrashka). The filming of the film was marked for the young actor by fruitful collaboration with such celebrities as Lev Durov, Sergei Garmash, Viktor Pavlov. Subsequently, Alexander Anatolyevich said that after this film they began to recognize him on the streets.
In 1991, the actor’s parents died - first the 58-year-old father died of a heart attack, 10 days later his mother, who was 4 years older than her husband, also died - the woman could not bear the separation from her husband.
In 1993, Gostev invited Mokhov to join the political detective series Gray Wolves. The film brought together virtually the entire color of Russian cinema: Rolan Bykov, Lev Durov, Alexander Belyavsky, Alexandra Zakharova, Evgeny Zharikov and many other wonderful artists starred in the film.

According to Mokhov, his film career took off thanks to this director. After the success in Gostev’s films, the talented Mokhov began to be often invited to bright roles, which Alexander Anatolyevich could rightfully be proud of.
Alexander Mokhov in “The Barber of Siberia”
After the death of Igor Gostev in 1994, the actor did not have truly stellar roles for a long time. In 1998, he starred in a cameo role in “The Barber of Siberia” by Nikita Mikhalkov, but the small role of an officer in prison was remembered only by the experience of working with a world-class actress - together with Julia Ormond.
Alexander Mokhov with Ekaterina Semenova (“Two Fates”)
However, in 2002, Mokhov made a name for himself thanks to his collaboration with Ekaterina Semenova and Dmitry Shcherba in the TV series “Two Fates”, where he played one of the sides of a love triangle.
After that, he appeared in several major projects: “The Death of Tairov” (2004), “The Site” (2003) and its sequel “The Enchanted Site”, “Yesenin” (2005), “Escape” by Yegor Konchalovsky (2005), “Liquidation” (2007), “Burnt by the Sun-2” (2010). The actor not only played the role of each character, but lived it, convincing viewers of the reality of the existence of the hero of the film, even if he was invented.
Alexander Mokhov in the TV series “Plot”
But the actor’s work was truly given a stellar shine by crime series, where his multifaceted talent was fully revealed: “Moore is Moore” (2004), “Enchanted Site” (2006), “Bros” (2009), “Teacher in Law-2” (2010), “Secret City” (2014), “Foundlings” (2016).
In the film “While the Village Sleeps,” Alexander Mokhov also showed himself as a talented director.
And in the multi-part films “Brothers”, “Teacher in Law-2”, “While the Village Sleeps”, “The Secret City”, “The Last Janissary” Alexander Anatolyevich also proved himself to be a director who knows how to create a sought-after film product.

Alexander Mokhov appeared in cinema exactly 30 years ago, playing in the film “Money for Maria” by the famous director Vladimir Andreev. In a frank conversation with “Interlocutor,” the star of the series “While the Village Sleeps,” “Two Fates,” and “The Last Janissary” talked about how he went through a divorce after 18 years of marriage and met his main love, actress Daria Kalmykova, who is 20 years younger than him .
Left Tabakov for cinema and television
A simple guy from a working-class family: his mother is a production foreman, his father is a joiner-carpenter, he worked hard at construction all his life. Sasha was born in the Vologda region. When he was two years old, his parents moved to the small town of Shimanovsk, Amur Region. He spent his childhood and youth in the Far East.
After graduating from school, he decided to become an actor and went to Irkutsk to enroll in a theater school. After graduation, Alexander was admitted to GITIS in the workshop of Oleg Tabakov, and immediately into the third year. Mokhov became one of the favorite actors of the master of Russian cinema.

– Oleg Pavlovich invited me to the troupe of his studio theater. I worked there for 31 years, I recently quit, after all, television and cinema are closer.

My love affair with cinema began 25 years ago with the leading role in the crime film “Mayhem.” The film tells about the harsh principles of life in a penal colony, where the main judges are thieves in law.
– After this film, people began to recognize me thanks to the director of the film, Igor Gostev. I don’t know why, but he somehow treated me very strangely and, I would say, too warmly. Then he invited me to star in his detective story “Grey Wolves”. Thanks to this director, my career took off.
People's Artist of Russia Igor Gostev died on March 25, 1994.
“It happened right at a meeting of filmmakers, he once again defended someone’s interests, fought for his films. I worked under strain, and my heart couldn’t stand it. I did not dare to come to the funeral; I am convinced that only the closest people should be present there. I’ve never been to Igor Aronovich’s grave in Moscow either, there’s no point in that...

Mokhov and his wife continue to communicate with Gostev’s relative:
“We are friends with his granddaughter Yulia, she works in the banking sector, and recently became a mother again,” said Alexander. “She and I often talk about Igor Aronovich - remembering a person with kind words is much more important than bringing carnations to the grave.
“During the crisis I lost millions”
After Gostev's death, Alexander Mokhov did not have star roles for nine years. He starred in various films, but his work did not have the same success. A new wave of popular love swept over the actor in 2002 after the premiere of the series “Two Fates” by Vladimir Krasnopolsky and Valery Uskov. The story of two village friends who could not share the visiting capital specialist Stepan captured the whole country. Mokhov played the boyfriend of one of the main characters.

“People fell in love with my character to the point of tears and were imbued with his difficult fate. People often came up to me on the street and said a lot of kind words.

– In Nikita Mikhalkov’s film “The Barber of Siberia” I played in a small but bright episode. I played together with the world star Julia Ormond, which I am very proud of. I felt comfortable working with Nikita Sergeevich, he is a unique director - he always comes to the actor’s aid on time, he is humorous and hooligan on set. This creates a friendly atmosphere so that we can fully reveal ourselves in the frame. Five years ago, he starred in another film by Mikhalkov - “Burnt by the Sun 2: Imminence.” I hope to work with Nikita Sergeevich again.
The actor speaks no less warmly about his collaboration with Yegor Konchalovsky. Mokhov has played so far only in one of his films - the drama “Escape”. In 2005, Alexander Anatolyevich decided to try himself as a director and shot his first film - the detective story “Diamonds for Dessert”. The main roles were played by Alexander Feklistov, Yuri Belyaev and the director’s wife Daria Kalmykova. By the age of 51, the Honored Artist of the Russian Federation had directed 12 films, including the popular TV series “Teacher in Law,” “Bros,” and “Secret City.”
– Now I am in Kyiv, where the filming of the multi-part crime drama “The Last Janissary” for the TV channel “Russia 1” is taking place. I work not only as an actor, but also control the filming process as the lead producer of the series. Of course, in Ukraine, not everything is so simple: the actors’ fees were cut three times, my salary fell by half.

– What amounts are we talking about?
– About the millions of rubles that I lost during the crisis.
“You won’t surprise my wife with diamonds”
On March 4, Alexander Mokhov’s wife, actress Daria Kalmykova, celebrated her 31st birthday without her beloved. They were separated by 800 kilometers.
– Early in the morning I called Moscow and congratulated Dasha on her birthday. I haven't decided on the gift yet. You won’t surprise your wife with fur coats and diamonds; she has it all, and she reacts rather restrainedly to the attributes of luxury. I’m thinking of giving her a trip to some hot country.
“While the village is sleeping,” 2014 / still from the series
Their love story began 13 years ago with a joint tour.
– Dasha, being a student at the Moscow Art Theater School, went on a tour with our Tabakov Theater. There we began an affair. At that time she played one of the central roles in a play with the participation of Oleg Pavlovich. We dated for two years, I am a serious man - I take all my steps deliberately, as often happens: I slept and got married - not about me. He waited until she received her education and proposed.
Despite the fact that he is a guy from the provinces, and she is a native Muscovite from a famous family, the future father-in-law and mother-in-law accepted Alexander Mokhov as their own.
– Her father, Konstantin Melik-Avakyan, is a film director and former director of the Documentary Film Studio. We became friends with him, I can always ask for advice and share some experiences. We also have an excellent relationship with Dasha’s mother, theater expert Natalya Kalmykova.
Alexander Mokhov with his wife / Andrey Strunin
Alexander Mokhov’s parents were not at their son’s second wedding; they died in 1991.
“First, dad died of a heart attack, and ten days later mom died too. They loved each other very much, my mother simply could not live without him. They are buried in the Amur region, in Shimanovsk. Although I was born in another region, I consider this small town to be my homeland. I try to visit my parents’ graves every year.
Anatoly Mikhailovich Mokhov died at 58 years old, his wife, Maria Semenovna, at 62 years old. They never saw the second grandson of Makar, who was born to Alexander in his marriage to Daria Kalmykova.
– My son is seriously interested in music and plays the piano. I hope that he will become a musician in the future, at least he has all the makings for this.

"Drinking is hard work"
Among the little-known facts of the biography of the popular actor is a difficult divorce from his first wife, which he recalls with regret.
– We met Tatyana in the Far East. She is a mathematics and physics teacher by training. We got married in 1985, two years later Semyon was born. He is now 28 years old, studying at the Humanitarian Institute of Television and Radio Broadcasting in the correspondence department of the camera department and working in the film industry.
Mokhov lived with Tatyana for a very long time, but was forced to break up with her:
“Tanya was divorced after 18 years of marriage,” said the actor. – The difficult period of the 90s came, I was not mentally prepared for this... Sometimes I regret my decision, maybe everything would have turned out differently, but one cannot step into the same river twice. I moved Tanya to Moscow, and thanks to me, she became addicted to cinema, and now works as a second director. We have managed to maintain warm relations to this day.
Mokhov becomes depressed after drinking and considers drinking hard work / Andrey Strunin
– It’s no secret that actors, after difficult days of filming and especially love dramas, relieve stress with alcohol...
– On the contrary, after drinking I become depressed, alcohol weakens me. In general, I’ll tell you: drinking is hard work, so I relieve stress without a bottle. There are many other options, I prefer to play football with friends or play billiards.
– Many men experience a midlife crisis after 40 years of age. Does this sound familiar to you?
– I would call such a period a new round; a crisis is still something negative. If you understand that at the moment everything in life is bad, then something new and better will definitely come. Behind the black stripe there is always white. About every five years I want to change everything in my life, in my opinion, this is necessary, otherwise there will be no development. I have been searching for myself all my life, so I am sure that I have not yet played my best role.
