Biography of brother Sergei Lazarev

Pavel was born on March 15, 1978 in Moscow. His dad Vyacheslav Yuryevich Lazarev left his wife Valentina Viktorovna Lazareva, Pavel’s mother, when the boy was 10 years old. The popular Russian performer, theater and film actor Sergei Lazarev is Pavel’s younger brother. The difference between Valentina Viktorovna’s sons was 5 years. Mom raised her two sons on her own.

The boys had a difficult relationship with their father. After Vyacheslav Yuryevich abandoned his family, neither Pavel nor Sergei kept in touch with him for many years. Only in 2020, when his older brother passed away, the popular singer decided that it was necessary to restore relations with his dad. It would seem that Pavel’s death should have united his son and father, but in the spring of 2020, Vyacheslav Yuryevich Lazarev also died due to a suddenly opened ulcer.

It is known that in November 2014, Sergei Lazarev’s brother Pavel was released from a maximum security colony, where he had previously been imprisoned for four years for drug possession. After imprisonment, he tried to arrange a normal, healthy life: he found true love, began working for his brother, and began attending church.

Yuri Lazarev: my brother and I moved in different worlds

“Seven years have passed without Sasha.
With his departure, a gap, an emptiness, a black hole appeared in my life. The support has disappeared,” his brother, also an actor Yuri Lazarev, recalls about actor Alexander Lazarev. How Sasha left his homeland

We met with Yuri Sergeevich in St. Petersburg, in his dressing room at the Comedy Theater.
On the table under glass are photographs of brother Alexander. — Our father, Sergei Nikolaevich Lazarev, an artist by profession, was fond of photography and took a lot of pictures. Here we are with our parents on the lakes, here Sasha is fishing, and here we are with him and his mother. We had a huge number of Sasha’s photos! And recently I started looking and found nothing. Some kind of mysticism! Several boxes of my father's photographs—our entire family archive—evaporated. This is a blow to the family, I have nothing to leave behind...

I look at these remaining photographs, remembering my loved ones who are no longer around... Well, let's talk about my brother. I didn’t just love Sasha, I adored him. He is six and a half years older. And for many years I looked up to him.

Due to the age difference, we did not meet each other during my childhood. I actually hardly remember him while growing up. I didn’t receive any slaps on the head from my older brother, we didn’t interact in any way. I felt like I was alone with my mom and dad. And Sasha appeared only occasionally: he came and went. Although this could not have happened, he was also a child. And the four of us lived in one room in a communal apartment on Sredny Prospekt. It was cramped, and dad also painted pictures at home. You can imagine! But memory has erased the small details of those years.

Sasha and I moved in different worlds.
I spent my free time with the boys in the yards and hit a ball against the wall. Sasha also kicked the ball, but in his own company. Or he walked along two fashionable avenues at that time - Nevsky and Bolshoy on Vasilyevsky Island. As he said, he wore out more than one pair of boots there. Our father adored Alexander and was very proud of him. After all, there were no actors in the family before him, except for a distant relative back in Tsarist Russia, an operetta artist somewhere in Orenburg. On our father's side, our ancestors were railway workers. According to my mother, house builders from the Volga. Another layer of people! My father, however, found himself in a creative environment. He came to St. Petersburg as a young guy back in the 1920s and entered the Academy of Arts. He was kicked out of there a couple of times for his behavior, and then they took him back for his talent. He was a strong artist, studied with Pavel Filonov. Dancer, reveler, impulsive, emotional, sharp, explosive. And small in stature. Brother is not into it. In the yard they called Sasha Gulliver - he was 190 cm tall. His mother’s character was soft, conflict-free, flexible. And I’m just like my father. Siblings, but they turned out to be different configurations. We are antipodes!

— Did the fact that Alexander was planning to become an actor really surprise the family?

“When my parents found out, they were at a loss. Nobody expected it. Sasha read poetry very well. Mayakovsky was his strong point. We both grew up behind the scenes of the Alexandrinsky Theater, where our dear aunt Raisa was in charge of the costume department. Sasha and I watched all the performances, although we didn’t go together, at different times. And we saw all the greats on stage and in life: Cherkasov, Merkuryev, Tolubeev, Simonov... There was never any talk of becoming an actor. And even thoughts! Neither he nor I. Sasha said: I’ll go to a factory as a cabinet maker, they make decent money. Everything was decided by chance. While walking around Leningrad, my brother saw an advertisement on a pole about the Moscow Art Theater School’s visiting recruitment and went to the audition. By the way, they met Tolya Romashin there and entered together. Years later, it turned out that Tolya has a brother, also an artist. The story is the same as ours: Tolya went to Moscow and became known throughout the country, and his brother remained in St. Petersburg, working at Lenconcert.

Alexander moved to Moscow in 1955 From the personal archive of Yuri Lazarev

I remember how we accompanied Sasha to Moscow with the whole family. It seemed to me that he was going far, far away. Where is Leningrad and where is Moscow! Now the cities are separated by only three and a half hours on the Sapsan, but then they were different worlds. Leningrad in the 1950s was not the same as it is now. Essentially a province. We joked in the family: Sasha left his homeland.

The family didn't talk about difficulties

“The first time I came to the capital was a few years later, when I was finishing school, and my brother was an actor at the Mayakovsky Theater, where he served all his life. He played the main role in “The Irkutsk Story” based on Arbuzov. Both the Moscow and Leningrad audiences were eager to see the performance; they worked to a full house. That evening, when I looked at Sasha from the auditorium, my fate was decided. Dad dreamed that I would continue his work and become an artist; I myself was going to the Faculty of Biology. But I saw my brother on stage - and I couldn’t think about anything else except that I also wanted to be an artist.

— Has the capital drawn in Alexander Sergeevich?

— Sasha still loved our city and often came home. We even went on vacation a couple of times together: dad, mom and Sasha and I. Or we walked with him along the St. Petersburg embankments, raising our coat collars from the wind, or we went to the Hermitage. He rarely visited it, and I practically lived there. I have always been fascinated by painting. We get to Palace Square, Sasha says: “Well, it’s a museum! Shall we go back?

Long, thin, dark-haired, either an Armenian or a gypsy, he gradually changed, a gloss appeared in him. He left as a simple guy... Later, when he came on tour with the theater to Europe, local newspapers wrote about him: “Russian Yves Montand.” There was charm even in his clumsiness. Although he moved on stage amazingly.

For his arrival, his mother was frying a huge number of cutlets and setting a luxurious table. I looked at my brother with greedy eyes, sitting in a corner, my mother ran between the kitchen and the room, and two giants of thought - brother and dad - started talking about the theater, about art.

In our family we never discussed difficulties and everyday life at all - the conversations were about music, poetry, literature, theater, painting.

Cause of Pavel's death

Lazarev Sr. was involved in an accident that occurred on Kutuzovsky Prospekt. A tire of his car burst, as a result of which Pavel was carried into the oncoming lane at speed. Sergei Lazarev’s older brother received the following injuries: a concussion, a bruised shoulder, and a broken nose.

However, despite his injuries, Pavel refused the help of medical specialists. He decided not to go to the clinic, but to spend a few days at home under the supervision of his family. A little later, the man began to suffer from severe headaches. He had to call an ambulance, which took him to the hospital. But, as it turned out, it was already very late.
