DeloMasha Kravtsova, chief editor of the Russian version of GARAGE

How has the art world changed during the time you have been working in it?

GARAGE magazine is produced by an international team. Some of the editorial team works in London, some in Moscow, and art director Mike Meire and designers work in Cologne. And this is a new experience in my professional practice: despite the existence of the Internet, I still notice that the international context, its names, events and news take a very long time to reach Russia. And the environment in which we immersed ourselves, becoming part of the international editorial staff, not only helps us keep abreast of the latest trends, news and events in art, but also makes us part of them, moreover, it allows us to participate in many experiments. But in general we do not divide art into Russian and Western. We consider Russian art to be part of the global artistic and intellectual field. For various reasons, Russian authors were excluded from the global context for many years, but this has recently changed. Now in Italy you can see a huge personal project of the artist Evgeny Antufiev in the rather respectable Collezione Maramotti foundation in Reggio Emilia. Moreover, Antufiev was formed as an artist not in Moscow - and this is important in this case - but in Tuva. At the same time, his works are very consonant with international trends in contemporary art. Since I entered the art industry in 2002, it has changed a lot. A new generation of artists has emerged, new critics and curators, and a new profession - art manager. New institutions have appeared, for example, the Moscow Museum of Modern Art has blossomed, the Bolshoi Manege has recently been reformed - now it is one of the most interesting venues in Moscow. Many regional initiatives have appeared, for example, the Ural Biennale in Yekaterinburg. An environment has formed that was only dreamed of ten years ago. I remember how ten years ago I came to the “Reclamation” art festival at the Klyazma Reservoir. They pointed to a man walking in the distance and said: “God, this is the great and terrible collector Markin!” Collectors could be counted on one hand; now there are many more of them.

Which girls inspire you and why?

Revolutionaries attract my attention, and in order to become a revolutionary, it is not necessary to wave flags on the barricades. Sometimes it is much harder to go against the flow and oppose the established state of affairs. From this point of view, fashion designers Coco Chanel and Elsa Schiaparelli are revolutionaries. The context in which they had to work and make their little revolutions was much harsher than the modern one. In general, I am inspired by people who found the strength and courage to resist the system or circumstances, those who sacrificed themselves, such as members of the Resistance in France during World War II. I am inspired by people who performed military exploits, those who lived and worked in besieged Leningrad. It is important for me to know that there are strong individuals who live in spite of themselves. For example, photographer Lee Miller, a bohemian party girl and muse of the surrealists in the 1930s and a brave war journalist in the 1940s, and journalist Elena Masyuk, who reported from the Chechen war.

What do you miss in Moscow?

It’s not that I miss any institutions or services, but rather a certain atmosphere. Moscow is a city that is often unfriendly to both visitors and its residents. This friendliness cannot be faked. It seems to me that it is impossible, using other people’s models, to turn Moscow into something similar to Berlin or Paris, which I love very much. The atmosphere of each European city is unique and has evolved throughout its history. I would like Moscow to develop its own atmosphere, but one that is more conducive to different people and social categories. But to be more specific, in Moscow I really miss street cafes for visitors to drink coffee and look at passers-by. But at the same time, I understand that in Moscow people are not very keen on this type of communication: showing themselves and looking at others, except perhaps on Nikitsky Boulevard.

Name the best new projects.

I really like the Paperworks gallery created by Elena Bakanova and Evgeniy Mitta. Until August last year it was located at Winzavod, and now it exists as a gallery without walls. That is, its activities continue, there is simply no exhibition hall. This is a common world experience. The New Museum of Modern Art in New York or the MAC/VAL Museum in Paris have long existed without walls. I'm really looking forward to Lena's new ideas and projects, because they are completely consistent with the spirit of modernity, as I feel it. I also really liked the pop-up space of the New York gallery Family Business, which opened in New Holland, and their Tamizdat project. Family Business is made by our artist Dasha Irincheeva together with artist Maurizio Catellan and curator Massimiliano Gioni. The gallery's creators have collected a huge amount of paper samizdat: catalogues, magazines and books by the artist, which inspire them. This is very cool, because it essentially gives the viewer the opportunity to actually look into the heads of the authors of the project, to find out what ideas drive them and what feeds their imagination.
