Childhood and family of Maria Shalaeva
Born into a family of designers.
My father worked at Baikonur. My mother is an engineer by profession, and during perestroika she went into business. Grandfather is a military shipbuilding engineer. The girl rarely saw her dad. As a child, Masha was fond of playing the domra. I didn’t choose this unusual instrument by chance. One day she and her grandmother went to a folk orchestra concert. The girl’s imagination was struck by a musician who played the domra so soulfully that he almost fell out of his chair. Masha wanted the same. She achieved great success at music school, even joining the folk instruments orchestra. As a teenager, Masha loved films with Chuck Norris. And since she and the actor had similar hairstyles, the girl was nicknamed Chuck Norris in the yard. It’s true that Maria didn’t even think about an acting career at that time. In early childhood I wanted to become a ballerina. In high school, I decided to enter the Moscow Aviation Institute, even signed up for preparatory courses, but quickly dropped out. One day she approached her mother and said that she wanted to become either an actress or a hairdresser (Masha’s close friend was interested in haircuts and hairstyles). Mom didn’t object to her first profession. Moreover, Maria’s great-uncle was an actor at the Moscow Art Theater.
Actress's childhood
Maria Shalaeva was born in 1981. Since childhood, she followed a creative path - she attended a music school in the domra class. And when she grew up, she decided to enter VGIK. Interestingly, the popular actress was expelled from the university after her second year. The reason was chronic underachievement. But this did not mean that Maria was not a talented actress. Even in her youth, she received her first and important award, playing in the short film “Tomorrow’s Birthday.”

In 2004, a fabulous story happened to Maria. The actress flew to Paris for the first time. On the plane she met director Sergei Tkachev. He was captivated by Maria’s beauty and literally wrote a script specifically for her in just a week. The film was called “Masha”. This is the story of a girl who runs away to Paris. Filming took place in France, including the Louvre (it is very difficult to obtain permission to film in the museum).
Maria entered VGIK. She studied poorly, constantly skipped work, was distracted, and did not complete her homework. I got a job as a waitress at a club. Maria somehow made it to the end of her second year and was expelled.

Later in the interview, Maria said that she considered this decision of the teachers fair. She herself later regretted that she never graduated from one of the best theater universities in the country. But at first, Maria did not even think about regret. She was distracted from her gloomy thoughts by the Kinotavr festival, where the actress was awarded a prize for her female role in the film “Rusalka.”

“Masha” is not the only film whose script was written specifically for Maria Shalaeva. Anna Melikyan wrote for Masha, who was still a student at the time, the script for the film “The Mermaid” based on Andersen’s fairy tale. This film received about ten awards and was awarded the best ratings from viewers and true film connoisseurs. In 2008, “Rusalka” competed for the Oscar as a candidate from Russia.
Maria thought that her finest hour had come, but after “The Mermaid” the actress was not invited to serious roles. There was a lull for five years. Only after this time, director Pavel Ruminov invited her to play the main role in his drama “I’ll Be There,” for which the actress eventually received several awards.
Roles of Maria Shalaeva in films and TV series
While still a student, Maria began acting in the film “Mermaid”. Director and screenwriter Anna Melikyan wrote the script for “Rusalka” especially for Maria Shalaeva. This is a story from Andersen's fairy tale. Only the action takes place in Moscow in the 21st century. Maria played the mute girl Alice, who somehow magically can make her thoughts material. She makes apples fall from trees, gets into college with the power of her thoughts, and can even cause a plane crash. One day, Alice saves a drowning man and falls in love with him. The end of the modern “Mermaid” is just as sad as in Andersen’s original fairy tale.
The film received widespread acclaim from critics and audiences. The film has about 10 awards. Maria Shalaeva became the winner of Kinotavr in the nomination for best actress, and also received “Nika”. In 2008, the film became Russia's contender for the Oscar.
After this, Maria decided that she had conquered Russian cinema, and directors should flood her with offers. But after “Rusalka” the actress was not invited to take on serious roles. There was a lull for several years. Maria starred in small roles and worked in TV series. She starred in “The Brothers Karamazov” by Yuri Moroz. The actress was very worried about the lack of serious work.

Maria Shalaeva: Death is a joyful event
28-year-old Maria looks and sometimes acts like a naughty teenager |
A popular actress does not want her son to act in films.
Today it is difficult to believe that the “mermaid” Masha SHALAEVA was expelled from VGIK with the wording “inability to study at a higher educational institution.” “During that period, I was just filming a lot,” the actress explains her departure from the university. But in the profession it took place even without a “crust”. Maria's acting portfolio includes roles in 20 films. Twice at Kinotavr she won the prize for best actress and received other awards from prestigious film festivals. Now we see Masha in the Channel One series “The Brothers Karamazov”, where she plays the paralyzed 14-year-old Liza Khokhlakova. Our correspondent spoke with the popular actress.
— Masha, you are exactly twice as old as your heroine. How did you manage to “return to childhood”?
— When I was invited to audition, I was filming “Rusalka.” She came with green hair, sleep-deprived - a natural teenager. In general, the main thing for an actor is to think not about his suitability for the character’s age, but about his inner essence. In Dostoevsky, Liza’s character is well developed; she is a complex person, although in essence she is still just a child, and besides, she is also sick.
— You are now one of the most popular young actresses. How did it happen that you were expelled from VGIK?
— This was due to missing classes; I was filming a lot then. Professional knowledge, of course, is important, but it so happened that I did not reach the diploma. I also studied the language in France, studied at a school for foreigners. I've loved French since childhood, it's in my blood. A person receives the most important knowledge in childhood, in the family. You can graduate from a theater university, have a degree, but not succeed in the profession.
— Do you have anything in common with your “mermaid” Alice?
“I’m probably not such a dreamer, waiting for my prince, but, like her, I perceive life positively. I’m not sure that, following Alice’s example, I would have rushed from the bridge into the river to save a stranger, but I definitely would not have left anyone in trouble.
— How long did it take you to wash your hair after you dyed it green?
“Fortunately, the make-up artists painted me with gouache; they applied it several times a day. I would never wash off the paint again. Since filming “Rusalka” I have been friends with Zhenya Tsyganov , my partner.
—You know French very well, but how is your Italian? After all, your mother lives in Italy?
— Yes, my mother’s husband is Italian. I don’t speak Italian very well, but I understand everything. I go to visit them, they come to me. Mom somehow went to the premiere of Nirvana. She is not particularly enthusiastic about my roles. Usually he says: “Well done, but we still need to work.” It is important for her that I be a good person, and my profession is secondary. My sister Eva’s husband is also Italian. He is a programmer, they now live and work in Ireland.
Daniil GUREVICH is always alive in Masha’s memory |
The groom died in Karmadon
— Your 4-year-old son has a rare name. Where did this decision come from - to name the child Nestor?
— I looked for a name for him for a long time, I definitely wanted a Slavic one: Stanislav, Rostislav, Svyatoslav. And then the name Nestor caught my eye, and I realized: this is what I need. Nestrusha goes to a state kindergarten, we pay purely symbolic money for him. It is important to me that my son is healthy and happy. I think any woman changes after becoming a mother, and I am no exception. Now I have become more careful about my life, since it no longer belongs only to me.
— Has Nestor been invited to act yet?
- I'm against it. Filming is also stressful for an adult: screaming, a lot of people. And the child generally reacts sharply to everything, including criticism. If the director says that he played poorly, the baby will cry, because the psyche of children is still fragile. I filmed with children, I know this firsthand.
With Yuri KOLOKOLNIKOV at a party |
— Together with Sergei Bodrov’s group, your fiancé Daniil Gurevich died in the Karmadon Gorge. You also had to star in that film. Do you believe that fate saved you? “I believe in the power of providence, but also in the fact that a lot depends on ourselves. I really had to play in the film by Sergei Bodrov .
But they planned to film the scenes with my participation in Moscow. Dani’s parents are forever my dear people. But I don't want to talk about it anymore. - Who is your husband?
— Ivan is a musician and composer, he is a year older than me. Friends introduced us. We haven't gotten married yet, but we are planning to. We had a very modest wedding, we didn’t even invite relatives.
— You and your husband are almost the same age. But your son’s father, actor Dmitry Shevchenko, was 17 years older than you. Does age difference matter in marriage?
“I think what’s important here is not age, but whether you both look at life the same way.”
— Shevchenko played your father in the film “Masha,” which made you famous. Are you talking now?
- Certainly. He used to live and work in St. Petersburg, but has now moved to Moscow. He and I also starred together in the film “The Freshman.” Nestor loves his dad and talks about him all the time. But they don’t see each other very often; they mostly talk on the phone. Nestor communicates wonderfully with Ivan too.

Favorite activity: traveling
— Do you have your own apartment on Chistye Prudy?
- No, we're filming. I'm not sure we'll ever be able to make money on it. In general, I have a hard time imagining who can buy housing in Moscow now. This is unrealistic for us.
— How long ago did you learn to drive a car?
— I recently bought it, took out a loan. And only then I began to learn to drive. I am a careful and attentive driver. Sometimes, however, I also take the metro. It happens that they recognize you and come up to you, it’s very nice.
In the movie "Mermaid" |
— What do you usually watch on TV? — I don’t have a TV at all.
I have a computer and get news from the Internet. — How do you feel about awards?
— In Russia, this has nothing to do with career growth. Nice, but nothing more.
- Do you have a pet?
“Seven years ago, in the chilly autumn, I found an unfortunate kitten in the trash heap. Now he has turned into a very beautiful cat Caesar, Nestor adores her.
— Do you keep fit with exercise equipment?
— I go to the gym occasionally, but I have very little time for it. Yes, and I'm lazy. I really love to travel. London, Berlin and Rome are my favorite cities.
In the film “Private order” |
- Do you smoke? — I constantly quit and then start again.
— What works of yours will we see in the near future?
— Films “I”, “Bride at any cost”, “Merry Men”.
— Which of the recent events made the greatest impression on you?
- Which one are you wearing?
- For me - the death of Oleg Ivanovich Yankovsky. Such a huge sorrow...
— There is no need to treat death as a tragedy. This is rather a joyful event. Because from our earthly world, where there is so much suffering, a person moves to where he will be much better. And people cry at funerals because they feel guilty.

Personal life of Maria Shalaeva
Maria's first husband is actor Dmitry Shevchenko. They met on the set of the film "Masha". Dmitry played Maria's father. They did not live long in marriage. Their son Nestor was born after the divorce. Maria raised her child alone. By that time, the actress’s mother had moved to live in Italy, so she could not count on the help of Maria’s grandmother. The actress maintained a good relationship with her ex-husband.
In an interview, Maria admitted that she did not even think about getting married a second time. She believed that she had fulfilled the required minimum: she had been married and given birth to a child. But then a friend persistently intervened in the actress’s personal life. She decided at all costs to bring Maria together with her familiar composer. A friend lured Maria into Ivan’s studio by cunning. But the first meeting did not go well. The future spouses did not like each other. Then a persistent friend arranged a second date for them. There was no point in resisting. Maria and Ivan got to know each other better, fell in love and got married. They had a daughter, Evdokia.
Personal life
The actress gave birth to her son Nestor back in 2005. Masha is not married to his father, actor Dmitry Shevchenko, and therefore for the most part she had to raise Rebecca alone. The actress admits that at that time she was not ready for the birth of a child, but nevertheless, she fell headlong into motherhood and for a long time she had no time to arrange her personal life.
The actress was introduced to her husband, composer Ilya Lubennikov, by mutual friends. Maria and Ilya did not immediately begin to communicate. But life circumstances nevertheless turned out in such a way that they fell in love with each other and got married.
In 2010, the couple had a daughter, Evdokia. The actress says that it is initially simpler and easier for a child who is born in marriage and lives with both parents. Nevertheless, her eldest son communicates well with his father Dmitry Shevchenko and will receive a lot of attention from him. Nestor also has a good relationship with his stepfather.
It is important for the actress to spend as much time as possible with her children. Sometimes they have to be left with a nanny. But Shalaeva travels with them with pleasure and communicates a lot. She does not chase popularity and fame. The main thing for her is to live and enjoy life. Never lose interest in her. Set priorities correctly.
