Childhood and youth
Maria Akhmetzyanova was born on August 29, 1989 in Tver. From an early age, the girl studied ballet, and then demonstrated remarkable success in athletics and shooting. Despite this, after graduating from school, Maria chose a different path and applied to the philological department of Tver State University.

Fortunately for domestic cinema, Akhmetzyanova did not limit herself to one diploma. In 2012, she studied as a theater and film actress at the German Sidakov School of Drama in Moscow and devoted herself entirely to cinema.
Actress Maria Akhmetzyanova: “They took me away from the set of the Year of Culture in an ambulance”
According to the plot, during a direct line with the president, the head of the literature department of the Verkhneyamsk Philological Institute, Sofia Belozerova (Maria Akhmetzyanova), received a complaint about the inaction of Moscow official Viktor Sychev (Fyodor Bondarchuk). As a result, he is sent from Moscow to provincial Verkhneyamsk to help bring the local university into the top 100 higher educational institutions in Russia.
We were able to talk with actress Maria Akhmetzyanova and find out how the filming went and whether it was difficult to work on the same set with Fyodor Bondarchuk.
– Maria, do you remember the moment when you were approved for the role?
“They called me and said: “Masha, hello, we have a project, filming in two weeks, but there is no main character. You’re not very suitable, of course, she’s older, she’s a teacher, a gray mouse, but we thought: what if something works out?” Of course, this statement “You are not suitable” turned me on a little. Am I not suitable?! Okay, let's try!
The next day I arrive in a dress on a scooter. Just imagine trying out on a scooter! Okay, sit down, let's try out. We tried it out. Everything's OK. Comedy is a completely new genre for me, it was very scary, I didn’t know how to exist, how not to go over these very fine lines.
After the first auditions I went home, a couple of hours later they called me back and said that tomorrow I had auditions with Fedor Sergeevich at 10 o’clock. Firstly, these are almost the earliest samples that I had in my life. Secondly, I was very surprised that Bondarchuk was also auditioning for the role. They sent me a text, I was very worried, but when I arrived at the site, I realized that I needed to be one hundred percent confident in myself. Then, when we were filming a film about the film, they asked me why I behaved so arrogantly during the auditions. It was not arrogance, but self-confidence.
I prepared this material and understood that I would succeed, I liked it, I knew how to do everything right. Soon they called and said that I was approved and filming would take place in a week. They give me a thick script, voluminous, incredibly complex material, and even in such a labor-intensive genre as comedy. Set up for greater responsibility. I understood who my partner was and that I should not let him down.
– Did you understand that this project was for TNT?
– Yes, of course I understood. Moreover, I read the script in one sitting. This is the best comedy series I've ever read. Such subtle, non-vulgar, wonderful humor.
– Maria, you played sports (athletics, shooting), and now you are acting in films. What qualities do you need to have to achieve success in sports and cinema? Is there anything in common between them?
– To achieve something in sports and cinema, you need to have fortitude. Huge steel endurance. I studied ballet for 12 years. And, of course, here, too, as in cinema, discipline is needed. You need a lot of endurance: don’t sleep, don’t eat, stand like a soldier until the last minute. If you work your butt off, anything can happen both on the set and in the stadium.
- Well, since we remembered about ballet. I know that you appeared as a ballerina in an advertisement with David Duchovny, tell us about it.
– I finished studying ballet professionally at nineteen, and after a long seven-year break I was approved for the role of a ballerina. This was not a commercial advertisement, but a social video about Russia. Since David Duchovny has Russian roots, the video showed what David would become if he lived in Russia.
I get approved the day before filming, so in the end I only have one evening left. They tell me that I need to come to the rehearsal and take my ballet attributes with me. I ask: will there be something complicated there? They answer to take what they have. There will be guys from the Bolshoi Theater, you will do a class (practice - editor's note), then the choreographer will come and arrange everything (choreograph a dance - editor's note).
I took my uniform and pointe shoes. I'm just lucky that I keep all this as a talisman. I move from apartment to apartment, from one city to another city, and I always take these things with me, because they are very dear to me. In a word, I was lucky that all this happened then.
On the day of the tryouts, guys from the Bolshoi arrived. They study every day, they have classes for six hours, everyone is in shape, in good shape, just gorgeous. And then I come (smiles)... But I’m used to not showing it, not to panic, and I just decided to be myself. I changed my clothes, warmed up...
Then the choreographer arrived. It felt, of course, that I had a break, my muscles lacked tone, but everything worked out, we did everything. After the auditions, they said that tomorrow was the shooting, I should arrive at five in the morning. At exactly 10 a.m. David arrives; he has the role of choreographer, and this is also his first experience. I should have stood in line by this time, because... David only had three takes. He came to the site. We met with him - I had a six-year break from ballet practice, he was completely unfamiliar with ballet nuances.
How did you manage to remember everything in such a short time?
“I came home, trained all evening, my fingers hurt, everything creaked, crunched, my muscles trembled. I could not sleep in a calm state. Since the tone was lost from exertion and stress, the body was simply shaking. When I arrived at the site and began to warm up, I realized that my fingers were going numb to such an extent that I couldn’t feel my legs. We were worried, of course, we were thinking about how not to let anyone down, so that David would come and we could quickly coordinate and implement everything planned according to the script.
– What was David like when you met him?
“He turned out to be completely different from the person we were originally prepared for. Absolutely positive, easy. The process was so captivating that he did not stop; there were third and fourth takes. Then they decided to change everything altogether, and they showed us new movements, since it was really difficult for David. They simplified the dance a little for him, changed the composition, did everything differently, but he tried it, it was clear that he got a kick out of it.
– Tell us what the atmosphere was like on the set of the series “Year of Culture.”
– There was some excitement at the auditions. When the first day of shooting arrived and the general scene with all the actors was immediately filmed, we went into the frame and felt like family. It was very easy with Fedor Sergeevich. This partner is a dream for any artist. Thank him very much for his support, for the fact that we were really on the same page. And the most important thing for me, and all the actors had such a feeling, is that you come home and you are already sad without your hero, without the set, without all the actors. You go to bed and think: morning would be quicker to meet my hero, my Sonechka. We were ready to stay awake, we fell in love with each other so much.
– In one of your interviews, you said that you are a maximalist and this quality guides your work. How do you evaluate your role in the series “Year of Culture”? Is it as successful as possible or are there things that you would like to change or work out better?
– To sum it up, you need to see all the episodes. I've only seen the first one so far. How do I feel after this six-month marathon? I'm very pleased, really. It was very difficult. But I approached my work so responsibly that I woke up in the morning with a blood pressure of 65 over 45. I didn’t know such pressure. Firstly, it was a big responsibility. I have the main female role, I can’t let anyone down from the cast. People are much more experienced than me.
I just understood that I had to work as hard as I could, approach this process as best I could. I didn’t let myself relax for a second. I was sick and fainted on the site, they even took me away in an ambulance. It was not an easy process. But the result, of course, is pleasing. Perhaps I need to learn to take this easier, but that’s not about me.
– Modern life is gadget mania. Are you addicted to your phone? Are you doing a gadget detox?
– All social networks have their place, but I am not addicted to them. I post something on Instagram quite rarely, and very selectively. If I think it's worthy of a post, then yes. It’s difficult to give up completely, since this is part of our profession, you constantly need mail, WhatsApp, we correspond in actor’s chats, but all this is in moderation.
– The events of the series “Year of Culture” take place in the provinces. Name what advantages you see in living in a small town and in a metropolis.
– Everyone who lived in a small town and in a metropolis will name their own options. I love my hometown very much, I was born in Tver and lived there until I was 20 years old. Then I moved to Moscow, tried to go to St. Petersburg, there was such an opportunity, but I left it, probably out of teenage stupidity.
Pros of living in a small town. If we take Tver, now it is not possible to visit our homeland often, but every summer my son goes there to visit his grandmother. There is clean air, a forest, and during the break between filming I myself try to get out to Tver for at least two days: to relax, eat berries, go mushroom hunting, take a walk in nature. It feels calm and it's my hometown. This is a plus.
As for life in a metropolis, I am a movement person, and I need to constantly be in such good shape. So that my day is as full as possible, so that I don’t sit idle. In this regard, St. Petersburg is calmer, and Moscow is an energizer. I am such a person that it is difficult for me to sit in one place. Even during pregnancy I couldn’t sit quietly, my son was also dancing inside me, and that’s how he turned out, restless, but collected. What is important to me is the energy of the city, always running somewhere, doing something, devoting the maximum amount of time to family, work and everything else.
