Yuri Shevchuk: The magic of love and truth

Ɔ. I remember January 25, 1988. 50th anniversary of Vysotsky. A tsunami of popular adoration after the official recognition of “singer, poet, citizen” descended from above - and not a single attempt to understand who Vysotsky was for all of us and why he managed to penetrate the souls of millions. I’m seeing something similar now: memories of friends and acquaintances, a lot of seemingly correct words, but almost nothing about the main thing...

You know, these days I often received calls from various official channels, once again invited to speak and say something about Vysotsky again. And I couldn’t tell them anything, because... Vladimir Semenovich is, first of all, a singer of love, freedom and truth, that is, everything that was so lacking then and is lacking now, but they don’t say anything about this. They play his funny songs on air and tell stories about him. I watch these programs and see how his teeth are pulled out, his claws are cut down, how his personality is leveled and nothing is said about why we really loved him.

Ɔ. Well, yes, as he himself predicted in his “Monument”: “They tore off the shroud - how I’m humiliated, here, die! Is this really how you need me after death? Why did you personally love him? Who do you think he was to us?

Well look. There was the newspaper “Pravda” and many more “truths” with different prefixes - “Komsomolskaya”, “Pioneer” and others, and there was Vysotsky. There was truth in the printed word, where there was very little truth, and there was Vysotsky, who consisted of truth. I first heard this truth as an eight- or ten-year-old boy in our yard. Grown-up guys drank under a mushroom and sang Vysotsky. “In the dense reserve, in the terrible Murom forests, all sorts of evil spirits roam in a cloud and sow fear in passers-by...” - this is the first song of his that I heard and... magic happened, I froze, dumbfounded. These were completely different intonations than what we heard on radio and TV. Complete brain explosion!

Each time gives rise to its own intonations, and it is they that come to the fore, and not some kind of information. A reflection of time, era, their nerve and sensuality - youth feels such things immediately. I had musical ears, and I heard something honest, truthful, and unlike anything else. My father, a front-line soldier, had a tape recorder on which he listened to military songs, and one day I stole one tape from him, recorded Vysotsky on one side, and the Beatles on the other.

Ɔ. I once staged "Sail" for an old Iroquois chief in America. The Indian listened and said: “This is the voice of a rebel. These don’t live long, but they burn brightly.” During Vysotsky’s lifetime, and now, people argue about whether his phenomenon is understandable to everyone, regardless of time and borders, or whether Vysotsky was capable of blowing up the minds of only Soviet people.

His timbres, rhythms, unique charisma - they contain a whole universe of meanings, even for those who do not understand the words. I also had cases when I staged Vysotsky abroad and saw how his magic captivates people, not only those who speak Russian. Now there are good singers, bards, who write great, no worse than him, but they don’t have that voice, sound, nerve. You see... What did the Beatles do to us and the whole world? A sound we haven't heard before! Vysotsky did the same. We can talk a lot about the meanings of the songs, but it was those very intonations that became the revolution. They contain sincerity and truth. You know, it’s like communicating with a person, but he doesn’t look you in the eyes, he looks sideways, his hands are shaking - and you immediately understand that you are not on the way, no matter what he says. You can also read, hear and understand a lot in one voice. These are very subtle things. A person with mental strength, a seeker, a receptive person will certainly hear and feel Vysotsky, no matter whether he is American, French or Japanese.

Ɔ. In January 2012, Stanislav Govorukhin, who then headed the campaign headquarters of the candidate who soon became president, said the phrase: “Vysotsky would support Putin and me.” Conversations in the spirit of “What would Vysotsky do now? Whose side would you be on? I've been hearing it since the late 80s. It is clear that they are meaningless, and yet - what do you think about them?

What would Vysotsky do in August 1991? Maybe he would have sung on the barricades, or maybe he would have drank vodka with Shemyakin in Paris. Everyone is trying to put Vysotsky on their sofa, to fit him into their ideas about the world. Vladimir Semenovich was unpredictable all his life, and, knowing his history and fate, we can say for sure: he would be unpredictable even now. All these vestal whistles, all attempts to imagine what he would do and who he would be with - all these prophecies are worthless.

I was not personally acquainted with Vysotsky, but I had the honor of communicating with Bulat Okudzhava, and they, as you know, were friends. Once Bulat Shalvovich and I sat together all night, I had just returned from Chechnya, I told him about what I saw there... He has a very big heart, he almost cried, he was so hurt by the injustice of everything that was happening. What can we say about Vladimir Semenovich with his reflection and nerves... One thing can be said for sure: he would have been Vladimir Vysotsky in his reactions to what was happening. Govorukhin and the rest - everyone measures it by themselves. This is human nature.

Ɔ. Yuri Dud asked you about rock and roll, whether it died or not. Another spread of the topic “What would Vysotsky do today?” - this is an attempt to understand what and how he would sing. Rock? Rap?

Let me draw one parallel. Sasha Bashlachev was and is in rock and roll - the strongest guy with his own unique soul - Russian, Russian, ours - whatever you want to call it. We hung out with him in a Leningrad rock club, and he said more than once: I wish I had a band, drums, a guitar with fuzz! One day we did just that - we gathered in our studio and tried to play along with him. It turned out to be such crap! No matter how hard we tried, it all turned out to be so artificially glued to his voice and guitar - because that was where the whole cosmos was. Drums, guitars with fuzz - it all turned out to be unnecessary. That’s what I told Sasha: “You don’t need anything - you are your own rock band, trumpet, and drums.”

In the same way, Vysotsky did not need anything either then or now. He would not have become any rocker or rapper, because he was already everything. There are people who do not need anything additional to the truth that they breathe and sing.

Ɔ. In the fat 2000s, one successful official said that no new Vysotsky would appear in Russia, because everyone was doing well, and society needed such people when it was sick...

This view smacks of cheap utilitarianism. Everything is never good or everything is terrible. Always this way and that way. Misfortune, like happiness, has not been canceled at all times. People who are doing well... And what is good? A few lyams in the bank? This is good? Bullshit. There are people who have compassion for the time and the world, who worry about the imperfections of themselves and society. If, sitting in an easy chair, you think only about yourself, then yes, you may feel good for a while. But the poet's nature is of a different kind.

How did Vysotsky shock me? Why was this truly a people's poet? He tried to feel and understand everyone, in everyone he saw a Person so comprehensively... Pay attention, he sang very little about himself, almost every song of his is an immersion in the skin and soul of another! He loved a person with all his sins, unseemly deeds, valued in a person the will to live, the desire for something bright, for something that in Russia is always beyond the horizon, but that warms the soul so much... And this is what is always needed , no matter what era it is.

Ɔ. What did Vysotsky teach you personally?

I am a bad student, a poor student, but if I learned and am learning something from him, it is attitude towards people. Don’t be a hypocrite, don’t be correct or objective, this and that, but just be and love. Through empathy and understanding. Vysotsky loved so much that his love covered everyone. And we still smell and feel it.

Ɔ. Do you remember the day you found out that he was no more?

I studied as a khudgraf, on the day of his death we were decorating a school in the Bashkir outback, in the mountains. Ural, lake, beauty... Our team had a receiver, it worked all the time, and guess three times what we were listening to? "Voice of America", music programs, rock and roll. At one or two in the morning the broadcasts are interrupted: Vladimir Semenovich Vysotsky has died. I was simply orphaned. It was as if the truth was stolen from me in an instant. I went out somewhere into the forest, got drunk there, and sat down on some rock on the shore of the lake. Night, moonlight... It was a real personal tragedy. I don’t want to tell you further how strong it is. And for the first time in my life I wrote some of my own lines. I had never written anything before. And maybe I shouldn’t have written it, because I’m, of course, a so-so poet...

Ɔ. Yura, thank you for these words. One last request. We want to ask different famous people to name a few favorite songs, to create a kind of Vysotsky playlist. Let's be the first. What songs would you play to someone who has never heard him before?

Probably something philosophical, not tied to either time or society. "Ballad of Struggle" "Sauna in white." "Sail". "I do not like". “Wolf Hunt” is the kind of rap that you want very young guys to understand. Ɔ.
