10 years of the series “Don’t Be Born Beautiful!” — how did the fates of the actors turn out?

BIOGRAPHY

Nelli Uvarova was born in the Lithuanian city of Mazeikiai, into a Russian-Armenian family. The actress’s father, Vladimir Georgievich, is a civil engineer, and her mother, Galina Grigorievna, is an economist by profession, but has worked as a gymnastics teacher all her life.

Soon after Nellie's birth, the family moved to Georgia. As the actress admits, all her childhood memories are connected specifically with Tbilisi: “I had a good childhood. Difficult because it involved the war - the period when Gamsakhurdia came to power. But despite this, it is the happiest. My parents tried to create the most comfortable conditions for my sister and me. For example, I wanted to take up dancing, but it was financially difficult for us. And it was dangerous to take a child somewhere. But mom and dad organized evenings at home - they played the piano, staged plays, and danced. That is, life was very eventful.”

The girl never thought that she would one day become an actress. This profession always seemed somehow frivolous to her. At school, Nellie was an excellent student and thought about becoming a lawyer or a journalist. But life made its own adjustments: due to the current situation in Georgia, the family of the future actress was forced to leave the country. In Russia, it was difficult for the girl’s parents to find a job; they could barely make ends meet. At that time, Nellie was finishing school, and her sister was already a student at the Textile Academy.

After school, Nellie applied to five universities at once. And unexpectedly for myself, I entered VGIK: “They took me in advance: by the last round, my voice had disappeared. I got very nervous and just stopped talking. But Georgy Taratorkin, the master of my course, turned a blind eye to this, although the lack of a voice is generally unsuitable for the profession. At the last exam, he gave me the phone number of a doctor from the Union of Theater Workers and said: if you are cured by the first of September, you will study. I was treated, kept silent for two months, and by the first of September I was cured.”

Nelly Uvarova: biography

Nelly Vladimirovna Uvarova was born in the small town of Mazeikiai in Lithuania on March 14, 1980. Her family has Russian-Armenian roots. The girl's father was a production engineer at a factory, and her mother taught gymnastics. In addition to Nelly, the eldest daughter Elena grew up in the Uvarov family, who in the future became a successful clothing designer in Moscow.

The 80s became difficult for Lithuania, where the political and social situation became increasingly tense. The Uvarovs decided to move to the capital of Russia. By that time, Elena Uvarova was already working in Moscow and helped her relatives move to a new place of residence.

Nelly Uvarova in childhood and now

The financial situation of the Uvarovs forced the youngest daughter to work part-time while studying at school. The girl put up advertisements, delivered newspapers and dreamed of becoming an artist in the near future. Nelly Uvarova's acting abilities were discovered at an early age. Having moved to Moscow, the girl decided to develop them. She went to classes at the famous Theater Studio on Shabolovka. The family approved and encouraged Nellie's hobby. Mom even wrote scripts for some school plays and helped her daughter learn words and take on roles.

After graduating from school, Nelly Uvarova applied to five theater universities at once. But the girl was so worried during the admission process that her voice broke. Despite this, the talented applicant was noticed by the famous teacher and People's Artist of the RSFSR Georgy Taratorkin. He not only accepted Nellie into his workshop, but also helped find a doctor who eventually restored the future actress’s voice.

Nelly Uvarova

One solved problem was followed by a second unsolvable one. Because of her broken voice, Uvarova was enrolled in a paid training course. But the family did not have money for this. The student was expelled from the university, but due to her abilities and diligence, she was allowed to become a volunteer student. Obstacles on the way to her cherished goal did not break the fragile Uvarova, but hardened her. Within a few months, Nellie managed to receive a grant for training from Nikita Mikhalkov himself. And behind it is another grant from the Fyodor Bondarchuk Foundation and the Rolan Bykov Prize.

After graduating from VGIK, the aspiring actress, who managed to prove herself well, received many offers from a variety of metropolitan theaters, but chose the Russian Academy of Youth Theater. The creative biography of Nelly Uvarova is connected with him to this day.

THEATER

Immediately after graduating from VGIK, Nelly Uvarova was accepted into the troupe of the Russian Academic Youth Theater. The actress played diverse roles: Luisa Strozzi in Lorenzaccio, Dusya in Arbuzov's Tan, Annunziata in Schwartz's The Shadow. The first serious work was the main role in the one-man show “Rules of Conduct in Modern Society.” For her, in 2004, Nellie received an award at the Rainbow International Festival for Best Actress, and after a while was nominated for the Golden Mask Award.

The actress plays a lot; every year she has several theatrical premieres. In 2004, director Alexey Blokhin staged the play “The Wizard of the Emerald City”, where

. And in 2005, the premiere of the play “And the Dawns Here Are Quiet...” based on the story by B. Vasiliev took place, where the actress brilliantly played Sonya Gurvich. In Afisha, critic Zhanna Filatova very accurately described Uvarova’s character, calling Sonya “a recent excellent student, insecure and an introverted eccentric.”

A striking event in the theatrical life of Moscow in 2007 was the premiere of the play “The Coast of Utopia,” in which Nelly played the role of Herzen’s wife, Ogarev’s mistress. This nine-hour trilogy based on the novel by Tom Stoppard is not just a performance in the modern sense of the word, but a real large-scale historical canvas, telling about people and their destinies during a difficult period for our state.

In addition to the repertory theater, Nelli actively takes part in enterprises. In 2009, the play “The Groom from the Other World” was released based on the play “The Servant of Two Masters” by Carlo Goldoni, where the actress plays Beatrice. And in 2013, the premiere of Valery Garkalin’s production “A Neighbor for a Week, No More” based on Michel Clemont took place, where Uvarova played the role of Sophie.

Nelly Uvarova today

In the spring of 2020, Nelly took part in the choreographic show “Dancing with the Stars.” Evgeniy Raev became the actress’s dancing partner. While participating in the project, Uvarova was injured. The actress performed at the Festival of Theater Arts in Salekhard, where, playing a role on an unfamiliar stage, she did not notice the step in the dark and fell from the stage. Nellie got up and finished the performance, but after its completion the actress was urgently called for an ambulance. There was a suspicion of a fracture, but doctors found only a bruise. The press doubted that the artist would continue to dance, but Nelly continued to participate in “Dancing with the Stars.” Uvarova and her partner reached the final of the show, but lost first place. The tandem of Uvarova and Raev received the Audience Award.

Nellie’s latest film work at the moment is filming in the comedy series “Adaptation,” which premiered in February 2020. The sitcom was an ironic attempt to show Russian people from the outside through the eyes of a foreigner.

The series tells the story of an American spy who must infiltrate the city in order to find out information about the discovery by Russian researchers of a method for cheap gas production. The Americans are afraid that this will lead to sharp economic growth in Russia. The role of the spy in the film was played by Leonid Bichevin. Arthur Beschastny and Evgenia Brik played the role of random fellow travelers of the American, whose further acquaintance with him jeopardized the entire spy mission. The role of the head of Gazprom Dobycha Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug went to Alexander Ilyin, and Nelly Uvarova played the role of his secretary.

Nelly Uvarova in the series “Adaptation”

For this series, Nellie changed her image. Instead of the image of a modest and insecure girl familiar to viewers, Uvarova played an ambitious vamp and a sexy secretary. Tight dresses and low-cut blouses emphasized the actress’s figure and drew attention to her curves. The press immediately began bombarding Nelly with questions about plastic surgery.

Nelly Uvarova has a seductive figure

The actress claims that she has never had plastic surgery and is generally against this procedure, and she has naturally large breasts. Perhaps Uvarova’s attractive figure was simply hidden too well by the baggy cardigans and sweaters that accompanied her image of the popularly known “ugly girl.”

MOVIE

Nelly Uvarova’s film debut took place in 1999, she played the main role in Anna Melikyan’s film “Let’s Fly.” When an offer was received to take part in this film, the actress was studying at the institute, and the master of the course, Georgy Taratorkin, forbade her to act in film. But Nellie still decided on this idea. The entire time that filming was going on, the girl and her classmate, who was filming with her, hid it from everyone. As a result, Nellie received the main prize for this film at the VGIK international festival. The role also brought her the “Best Actor” award at the Milan festival.

The series “Don’t Be Born Beautiful” brought Nelly real audience love and national fame, in which the actress played the role of Katya Pushkareva. She was invited to the film by director Alexander Nazarov, for whom Nellie played in plays. The actress recalls: “It became interesting what would happen, I didn’t just have a desire to shine. And, by the way, I don’t see anything shameful in taking part in an entertaining series. This was a new experience for me, a step that I know everything about. I had to work more than in the theater - eight to ten hours a day: this series is entertainment for the viewer, but hard work for the actor. I would never act in advertising. They offered me more than once, but I refused. This is really useless.”

The image of Katya Pushkareva is the result of long and painstaking work by makeup artists and costume designers. The actress says that she had to get braces, which took her a long time to get used to. And at first she wore prescription glasses, although in life her eyesight was fine. But it was worth it. The audience fell in love with the heroine, and after this role, Nelly Uvarova began to be actively invited to films and TV series, mainly for leading roles. “The series changed my life. Lots of offers, new acquaintances. I was especially impressed by the meeting with Fernando Gaetano, the author of the script for the famous Colombian soap opera “Ugly Betty,” which we turned into a series about Pushkareva,” recalled Nelly.

The actress stars in the TV series “In the First Circle,” “Atlantis,” and “Heavy Sand.” Plays diverse roles, unlike the previous ones. In 2009, Nelly starred in the comedy melodrama

, where her partner in “Don’t Be Born Beautiful” Grigory Antipenko plays with her.

Now Nelly Uvarova continues to actively act in films and TV series.

Uvarova plunged into Atlantis

Very soon the series “Atlantis” with Nelly Uvarova in the title role will start on the STS TV channel.

Nelly became famous for the unforgettable image of Katya Pushkareva from “Don’t Be Born Beautiful,” but the new story promises viewers not only melodrama, but also a real intensity of passions. According to the plot, Uvarova’s heroine is teacher Vera, who at some point kills a man and goes to prison. Nelly Uvarova told an RG correspondent about what it’s like to play a female killer.

I physically feel the weight of my “daughters”

Rossiyskaya Gazeta : According to the plot of the series, your daughter is 12 years old, that is, you have to play a woman of an older biological age than you actually are. Is it easy for you to imagine yourself in an “age” role?

Nelly Uvarova : I was worried when I started filming, I suddenly felt such excitement. I said: “Wait, since you’re casting me for the role, then let’s make the daughter smaller!” But all the actors were approved before me, including the girl who was supposed to play the daughter... I was worried, but only until the first day of shooting. We immediately started filming with family scenes. Already in the first episode, the main dramatic event of the series takes place, and then everything grows like a snowball. We shot scenes from the first, second and third episodes on the same day. I had the opportunity to immediately play the entire palette of Vera’s character from complete happiness to absolute unhappiness.

And further. I have a completely new feeling in my life! In the theater, in parallel with filming the series, I produced a play (“The Coast of Utopia” based on the play by Tom Stoppard), in which, according to the script, I have four children. And in the series, my character will actually have two daughters. So, even now I physically feel the weight of my “daughters” in my arms. I remember everything: the size of their arms and legs, I remember where the child’s head is when I hold him in my arms. Now the actress Yasya, who at one time played my eldest daughter, goes to school, for her filming in the series “Atlantis” has ended, but I still miss her here (shows), at hand.

RG : In “Atlantis” there are two main heroines, one becomes a widow, the other becomes a murderer...

Where does a person find strength to move on in such terrible moments?

Uvarova : Of course, in the family, in loved ones, in children... When my heroine goes to prison, she lives alone: there, in the wild, there is her daughter Dasha, and in order for her to feel good, here in prison, she is ready make sacrifices. Although... there is a moment when Vera tries to take her own life, when she cannot survive her husband’s betrayal and finds herself on the verge of madness. And she survives because she finds out that she is pregnant. Vera understands that giving birth in prison conditions is extremely unfavorable, but she survives and gives birth to a child.

RG : Do you think that in life, fate always provides a way out of a difficult situation?

Uvarova: Of course, if you are looking for it yourself.

RG : Are you an optimist?

Uvarova : Of course.

It costs nothing to captivate me

RG : So you’re not afraid now to get involved in a long serial story again, after the crushing success of “Don’t Be Born Beautiful”?

Uvarova : 40 episodes of “Atlantis” are planned, and this is a completely different format. As for “Don’t Be Born Beautiful,” I don’t want to just star in a sequel, for the sake of the number of episodes. If there is a new story, it won’t cost anything to captivate me. This is how (snaps his fingers) within three or four I can catch fire and forget myself.

A lot of things happen to Vera in Atlantis, I’m interested in her journey, because she is a heroine, but for a while even she loses face and goes through psychological tests. It seems like this is some kind of crime story. Not at all! Even the prison comes second; it is important how Vera holds up, and there is no goal to let in more blood and show car explosions.

RG : So you liked this story right away?

Uvarova : I said to myself: “I want it!” when they gave me the play and I read the very first episode. I read: “Vera is being led along the prison corridor.” Next, the guard asks her to stand facing the wall, hands behind her head. And Vera says: “What, excuse me?” All. I realized that this was interesting to me. It is interesting to know the story of a man who does not know how to behave in a prison corridor, and who responds to such an address: “What, excuse me?” Yes, she is basically ready - “hands on her head”, but... How is that? I imagined myself in a prison corridor. It doesn't matter what happened or how I got there. But I clearly felt like I was in prison. I realized that life there is a different planet. What to do in this situation?

RG : Have you found the answer for yourself?

Uvarova: My answer is idealistic. Vera is offered a compromise solution: to turn against herself in order to get out of prison. It's a paradoxical move, but she doesn't agree to it. Someone will say: “What a fool!” She has a child, she can compromise. However, it is unknown what is correct in real life. There is no answer here. After all, not everyone can withstand such tests.

love me now

RG: The series is called “Atlantis,” but do you think family relationships are always uncharted territory?

Uvarova : (Laughs.) Exactly! Even as a child, I watched and wondered how people generally get together. Yes, there is a mom and dad, but they are a given for you. But now I see someone's wedding. The bride and groom are two completely different worlds and now they are one. How is this possible? Yes, you can be friends, but why are two different people family from today on? And they suddenly become mom and dad? This great mystery has been interesting to me since childhood. I was already in love in first grade, but that didn’t mean that this boy and I were family. At some point it seemed to me that it was impossible to find a person who would become family for me. There’s a sea of men, you know, a sea! And you only need one! The most interesting thing is that you may wonder: “Is it him?” a million thousand times, but when you meet him, this question will simply disappear by itself.

RG : Despite these difficulties, you found your man (Nelly is married to director Sergei Pikalov. - O.N.).

Uvarova: I wasn’t looking. I found myself. I grew up in Tbilisi, and there, if you are not married at 19, you are an old maid. And now, I’m 19, and I’m in Moscow. It’s not that I don’t want to get married, I want something. Nevertheless, at the age of 20 I decided to get married. I was preparing for the wedding... and then suddenly I thought, wait a second, the wedding beckons me, but no. That's not mine. As a result, I came out at 25, already an adult. You know, I don’t like the word “forever”. You can’t say, like at weddings, “Be happy together always.” When these words are spoken 500 times, they become worthless. I don’t like it when they confess their love to me and say: “I will love you all my life!” For what? You don’t have to spend your whole life... Love me now. In this sense, my husband and I have an understanding. We must cherish today and then maybe there will be tomorrow.

RG : Nellie, are you done with working in the “Beauties” program on Ukrainian TV?

Uvarova : The contract has been completed. It was a valuable experience. I remember once a woman came to our program and lied continuously! The topic of the talk show was related to witchcraft. The directors of the program tell me: “She’s lying, come on, expose her!” Everyone needs conflict. But I don't need that. The viewer is not a fool: if I see that she is lying, then he sees it too. I was very interested, but from the point of view of the result of the work: I am dissatisfied, they are dissatisfied with me, although no one had the courage to say this openly.

RG : Is there a talk show host you like?

Uvarova : It’s very difficult for me to speak, because I’ve been living without a TV for more than two years. They told me in Ukraine, they say, behave like Malakhov. Yes, I can play Malakhov, his habits, gestures, but it doesn’t turn me on. I understand that I am very behind the times. So they called me from the Comedy Club and invited me to filming. What is this? I asked in the theater: “What is this?” They told me: “What are you talking about! Do you know what’s going on there?!” As a result, I went to the program and thought: why? I am defenseless, I don’t know anything about this program, I don’t know the antidote, they will probably offend me there. But I enjoyed it. Wildly energetic! Sometimes it’s interesting to be a spectator.

What did Nelly Uvarova do?

after “Don’t be born beautiful”:

PERSONAL LIFE

Nelly Uvarova was married twice. The actress's first husband was director Sergei Pikalov. The couple lived together for three years.

Since 2011, the actress has been married to actor Alexander Grishin. The family has a daughter, Iya. Nelly admits that now she is truly happy: “He (husband - editor's note) is my support and support, because he can not only provide for the life of his family, as is usually the case - a man will bring everything, get everything, and at home you are somehow yourself. No, Sasha does everything within the family, although he is also an artist, and we exist in the same impulse: rehearsals, tours. But when it comes to replenishing the refrigerator with food, cooking, putting my daughter to bed, I can be sure: Sasha will do everything.”

Personal life of Nelly Uvarova

Even before the start of filming “Don’t Be Born Beautiful,” the actress married director Sergei Pikalov, who, ironically, became one of the directors of the series.

Nelly Uvarova and Sergei Pikalov

One way or another, after three years of marriage, Nellie’s husband left for a young costume designer. The reason for the quarrel was the rapidly increasing popularity of the actress, which her husband perceived very painfully. “While everyone is at home” with Nelly Uvarova (2012) Uvarova did not comment on the topic of divorce for a long time, and little was known about her personal life, and therefore the announcement of the actress’s pregnancy came as a huge surprise to everyone.

Daughter Iya (which means “violet flower”) was born in 2011. The name of the child's father remained a mystery for a long time. The secret was revealed when the media became aware of the wedding of Nelly Uvarova and her colleague, actor of the Russian Academy of Youth Theater Alexander Grishin.

Nelly Uvarova and her husband Alexander Grishin

They met while working on the play One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, where Alexander played the main role, and Nellie played the role of a woman of easy virtue. Then no feelings arose between them - they appeared only eight years after they met.

And in November 2020, a new addition appeared in the family. The second child of Nellie and Aleksand was born - a boy, Ignatius.

INTERVIEW

ABOUT THE NATIVE THEATER

“Theater is a path, a way of life, constant learning from the material, partners, directors. In these collisions something new is born. And I am very grateful to fate that I have this holiday in my life - my theater. Here I grow both professionally and, more importantly, humanly.”

ABOUT THE ACTING PROFESSION

“The acting profession is akin to being in love. And if the process of filming does not take place in love, it is torment, as if you were being tortured every day... And then filming a series is “six months of living in hell.” When there is no love for the material, for the director, there is no human warmth within the team, it’s a shame for every hour of such life, for every minute.”
