Childhood and education

Oleg Deripaska was born on January 2, 1968 in the city of Dzerzhinsk, Nizhny Novgorod region (formerly called Gorky region). His father Vladimir Deripaska died when the boy was one year old. Until the age of 11, Oleg was raised by his grandparents, who lived in the Kuban, near Ust-Labinsk. Later, the boy moved to his mother Valentina Petrovna Deripaska directly in Ust-Labinsk.

Deripaska in his youth

According to teachers at Ust-Labinsk school No. 2, Deripaska was a very diligent student with a penchant for exact sciences. In the final certificate he had one B - for essay. After graduating from school in 1985, Deripaska entered the physics department of Moscow State University (department of quantum statistics and field theory), where he was also known as one of the most talented students of the course. After his first year he was drafted into the army. He served two years in the missile forces near Chita, and in 1988 he returned to study.

After graduating from Moscow State University in 1993, Deripaska entered the famous Pleshka, where he studied economics and received a master's degree in 1996.

Way to success

While still a student, Deripaska earned the first money of his future fortune in a construction team, having also visited remote corners of Russia and the CIS countries. With his student friends, he opened his first business - the limited liability partnership “Military Investment and Trading Company”. The company was engaged in the supply of metals abroad.

Oleg Deripaska in his youth

In 1992, he headed (the future "Aluminproduct") and opened branches in Samara and Krasnoyarsk. The year 1993 passed for the businessman under the auspices of participation in the privatization of the Sayan Aluminum Plant - Deripaska acquired part of its shares and by 1994 received a controlling stake and became general director.

In 2000, Deripaska began collaborating with Roman Abramovich. The oligarchs combined their assets (Sibal and Sibneft), as a result of which Russian Aluminum OJSC (RusAl) was born. The partnership ended in 2004 with Deripaska's purchase of Abramovich's share.

In 2006, cooperation between Deripaska and Viktor Vekselberg, who headed the board of directors of the Siberian-Ural Aluminum Company, began. After combining their assets, it became a leader in aluminum production on a global scale.

Currently, the Basic Element holding includes enterprises operating in the fields of energy, mining, metallurgy, financial services, construction, aviation, agribusiness and others.

Svyatoslav Knyazev, who is suspected of robbing the apartment of Oleg Deripaska's ex-wife Polina Yumasheva, said that police officers beat him during his arrest and robbed him of part of the loot. Baza reports this with reference to the detainee’s statement to the Moscow Public Monitoring Commission.

In the appeal, according to the publication, Knyazev wrote that four unknown men grabbed him when he was returning to his rented apartment, and together with him they entered the home.
According to the suspect, unknown persons beat him throughout the night and forced him to confess to thefts that he did not commit. Knyazev claims that he realized that there were operatives in front of him only when the investigator came in the morning. According to the man, the Ministry of Internal Affairs officers took 190 thousand rubles from him and did not write it down in the protocol.
Knyazev says that he was diagnosed with numerous fractures of the facial bones, but in two hospitals they did not perform the necessary operation - in the first there were no places, and in the second the doctor refused to help the man because he himself had once been robbed.

In Moscow, unknown persons robbed Polina Yumasheva's apartment

Members of the PMC appealed to the Committee against Torture, whose employees have already written a statement to the Investigative Committee. The Ministry of Internal Affairs did not comment on the information about the beating of the detainee at the time of publication of the news.

Let us remind you that the robbers climbed into the apartment of the ex-wife of businessman Oleg Deripaska, Polina Yumasheva, through the balcony, found a safe in the home, smashed it with a sledgehammer and stole jewelry, the REN TV channel reported.

About studying at Millfield
In Britain, there is an aristocracy with a long history, but our elite is different, new, at most 15 years old. Many people from British aristocratic families studied at Millfield, and their parents severely limited them in money - unlike wealthy Russians.
I was raised in the British manner: I received $300 per academic quarter. We were fed at school, and the pocket money, in theory, was only for going somewhere on the weekend. Although I usually spent everything in two weeks, and then I didn’t go anywhere and ate only school food. About my publishing house
I have had an interest in journalism since childhood, and I dreamed of becoming a sports journalist.
Then I really wanted to publish a magazine about celebrities, even when I was studying in England. I immediately understood the phenomenon of such products: these are the only women's magazines that men read. They always have a magical rating: one person bought it, and three or four read it. I actively negotiated with Video International to purchase Ova-Press from them. The publishing house cannot be called a gift - I myself was engaged in acquiring it. The purchase was financed by my husband. But this does not mean that I said: “I want a publishing house” - and they brought it to me. I am, of course, much softer in character than my husband [laughs]. In publishing, authoritarian methods do not work; everything here is democratic. About everyday life
I get up at 9 am - I can’t do it earlier because I go to bed late.
I definitely do yoga, then I go to work. I live on Rublyovka, and I have to waste a lot of time in traffic jams. I try to come back in the evening before the kids are asleep. Sometimes I manage to go somewhere with friends, friends, family, or play tennis with my father. But work is still a big part of life, and the further I work on the project, the more time it takes me. About my husband
We met through mutual friends and got married in 2001.
From time to time he finds out how things are going with me at the publishing house, but I myself do not consult with him, I make decisions on my own. He is very busy at work, maybe if he had more time, he would also delve into everything himself. He likes to thoroughly understand everything - this is one of the secrets of his business success. We don't have a prenuptial agreement. It seems to me that this is not very accepted in Russia. But in principle, a marriage contract helps to avoid disputes and conflicts in the future. 2006 About the opportunities for women in business
No, we still have highly developed male chauvinism.
And then, I think it would have been impossible for a woman to go through the 1990s. Now the situation in this sense is not much better. There are many examples in the West where women occupy major positions in business. Oleg also has such an example in his company - Gulzhan Moldazhanova. - But still, these are not the creators of their own business. In domestic business you are not treated as an equal. There is a stereotype that women are, at best, financial directors and accountants. But in fact, the entrepreneur is sure, women are not inferior to men in creativity, in managing a company, in the ability to create and manage a business. About fashion
I love fashion, but I'm not obsessed with it.
I don’t keep up with the latest collections, I hardly go shopping. In Moscow now there is too much fashion - you come to a restaurant, and there is a parade of clothes. I rarely meet those whom I would like to imitate. It seems to me that in Moscow there are still few people who dress well. But that's changing. About my preferences in clothing
I like dresses, not long, but short.
I don't like a lot of bags. It is necessary to transfer from one to another, so I walk with one bag for six months. Not for advertising, but I like Kova&T jeans from my friend Dasha Zhukova. They are objectively comfortable. It seems to me that Dasha has a very good sense of style. June 2006. Dasha Zhukova's birthday About my grandmother
From my grandmother I get kindness and the ability to forgive.
My philosophy is that everything can be forgiven, people can always be understood. My parents worked a lot, and it was my grandmother who raised me. She was the eldest of 9 children in the family. Her mom died, her dad remarried, and she helped raise all of his children. She worked in kindergartens, then at schools - as a graphic designer and music worker. She organized concerts for all the children, and sewed costumes for everyone. My grandmother always allowed me to bring my friends. At the dacha she always organized performances and never made mistakes with roles - for example, she had a sister who always got the role of the Snow Queen. I then realized that this would be a role created for her. ( Note: Grandmother died in 2007
).
About priorities
The most important thing for me is family, children.
And parents. Now I’m trying to be with them more often, to go somewhere together for at least a week. Such priorities appear as you get older. I am generally a family person, I like a big family. The age difference between my children is 2 years. We wanted a second child, the children adore each other, they want to be together all the time, there is no jealousy. Marusya is younger, she takes advantage of this, and is a little more selfish. But Petya is not, he knows how to give in and share. These are qualities that I think will be useful to him in the future. Marusya is interested in dresses and jewelry. I have a younger sister, Marusya is a year younger than her. So they dress up together. I was 21 when Petya was born. This is probably too early for a modern girl. And I probably didn’t act quite consciously - first one, then the second... At 25, it seems to me that a woman is more ready for children. This is such a turning point - I have a sense of responsibility. But on the other hand, I’m young, and the children are already growing up - I can go to a restaurant for lunch with them. This has its own charm. This new sense of responsibility not only for oneself, but also for the children is very pleasant. True, you can no longer act based only on your mood. If the child is older, you need to drop everything and be with him. But I don’t like that now, for example, children of famous people go to school in cars with a guard and a driver. And their parents allow them too much. One high school student at Petya’s school was given a pink Hummer, with her name instead of a license plate. But all this is already ending. Guys who studied abroad come here with new views. Now people understand: to get something, you have to work. I think it is important to teach a child to work hard. November 18th. Ksenia Sobchak's birthday About tennis
Until I was 16, I only played tennis.
I started playing at the age of five and from the age of eleven I was in the top ten in Russia at children’s tournaments. At the age of 14 she became second in Russia. When I had a workout, I got up very early. After training there are lessons while everyone is walking in the yard. Actually, I’m a night owl, and my daughter is like me - she loves to sleep, and my son wakes up at 7 in the morning, no matter what happens. About public opinion
I feel the influence of public opinion.
You read the news and think: “Wow!” then you read nonsense about yourself and think that maybe they wrote lies about that person too. They wrote so much about Tatyana Yumasheva, they imagined her as some kind of evil genius, but she is not that kind of person at all. She is kind and warm-hearted. State

At the beginning of 2007, Forbes magazine estimated Oleg Deripaska's fortune at $13.3 billion. The entrepreneur was in 40th place in the ranking of the richest people in the world. He was in 6th place on the Russian list. In 2008, his fortune reached $28 billion, making him our richest compatriot.

In 2008, Deripaska became the richest man in Russia.
But after the financial crisis, the owner of Basic Element lost, according to various estimates, from 16 to 32 billion dollars. But in 2018, Forbes estimated the personal fortune of Deripaska, who was subject to American sanctions, at $3.3 billion.

Labor activity

A 26-year-old specialist is invited to work as the general director of the Sayanogorsk aluminum smelter. He had to study production technology, show an analytical mind and demonstrate business acumen. He became the initiator of the first industrial.

In order to attract financial resources for the modernization of production and development, in 1998 he carried out an additional issue of shares of enterprises. Most of them were bought out, increasing the share of shares to 76%.

Two years later, Deripiska took charge. Under his wing were several factories for the production of metal and alumina mining. Under the leadership of Oleg Vladimirovich, the company is flourishing and takes 3rd place in aluminum production. The director is appointed chairman of the board of RUSAL.

In 2008, by his willful decision, shares of the Norilsk Nickel mining and metallurgical complex became the property of the company. Moreover, enough securities were purchased to influence the decision of the board of directors.

Deripaska continues this policy. As a result, RUSAL absorbs or merges with plants in the mining and metallurgical industries. The company is a world leader in aluminum production.

But he himself talks about his business in an exclusive interview:

The Deripaska phenomenon

The secrets of a businessman's success are analyzed by experts. The entrepreneur's position on many issues and his ability to achieve results surprises many people. What is a phenomenon? When he began to manage the Sayanogorsk plant, the first in his life, the workers of the enterprise noticed that the real owner had come.

Oleg Vladimirovich had to confront the criminal world, which wanted to grab a piece of the enterprise’s profits. The director began to cooperate not with bandits, but to actively communicate with the police. The criminals went to jail, and he continued to work.

Airports in southern Russia are also under the control of Deripaska. In 2013, those under his jurisdiction received a large government order in preparation for the Olympic Games in Sochi. Work is underway in the city at the following sites:

  • construction of the port of Imereti;
  • airport reconstruction;
  • construction of an Olympic village with hotels and a tourist area.

The investment package amounted to 45 billion rubles.

Difficulties

In April 2020, the tycoon and his company were hit by sanctions. Because of this, the value of RUSAL shares fell on the Moscow and Hong Kong stock exchanges. Six months later, the sanctions on the company were lifted, but the billionaire remained on the Kremlin list for now.
