The difficult childhood of Vyacheslav Shalevich
Vyacheslav Shalevich was born in Moscow. Vyacheslav’s mother, Elena Ivanovna, at the time she met her father, worked as a typist in the Ministry of Defense. And the father of the future artist, Anatoly Ivanovich, a former white officer who later defected to the NKVD and got married to take revenge on another woman. When Vyacheslav Shalevich’s mother found out why her husband married her, she was already eight months pregnant. Then Elena Ivanovna made a bold decision and moved to Moscow. The future artist was born there. He first saw his father when he was 38 years old. Mom stopped all attempts by her ex-husband to see her son.
Vyacheslav Shalevich in childhood with his mother
When Vyacheslav was only seven years old, the Great Patriotic War began, he was evacuated to an orphanage near Saratov, where he lived until 1943, then he was returned to his mother.
Viewers loved Russian artist Vyacheslav Shalevich for the inner strength of his screen images
The father of the famous Soviet artist Vyacheslav Shalevich, known for his films “The Captain's Daughter”, “Three Poplars on Plyushchikha”, “Virineya” and many others, was a state security officer, at one time he served in Polotsk, then in Mozyr. In the eighth month of pregnancy, Shalevich’s mother left Minsk for Moscow, they say, because of jealousy. In 1938, the father was convicted and did not see his son. And only in 1972, when Vyacheslav Shalevich was already 38 years old, he met a man on tour in the Altai Territory who introduced himself as Anatoly Shalevich. But they had nothing to talk about. Time has a way of separating people, even those closest to them. On May 27, Vyacheslav Shalevich would have turned 85 years old. The TV channel “Culture” these days offers viewers a film directed by Vladimir Kaplunovsky “The Captain’s Daughter” and the archive program “Life Line”, in which Vyacheslav Anatolyevich took part.
Shalevich visited Minsk when the Vakhtangov Theater came here on tour back in Soviet times, where he worked for almost 60 years after graduating from the Shchukin School. The actor admitted:
photo mir24.tv
- I always wanted to be a good athlete, journalist or artist.
I’m not much of an athlete, I thought about becoming a journalist, but I always dreamed of becoming an artist. After graduating from the Shchukin School, I was accepted into the Vakhtangov Theater. And this is a great happiness, because I found on stage the great masters who lived in this theater. Once I was late for a play after intense filming in the film “Hockey Players”, and they were going to fire me. But Ruben Nikolaevich Simonov defended me, moreover, he suggested that the artistic council give me the main role in the new play. The last time the actor appeared on the stage of the Vakhtangov Theater was on December 1, 2020, in Rimas Tuminas’ play “The Pier,” in one of the short stories of which (based on the work of Bertolt Brecht) he played Galileo Galilei. "Pier" was conceived by Tuminas as a tribute to the oldest actors of the troupe, whom he admired. Unfortunately, the benefit performance, where each of them had their own theme, their own hero, their own confession, gradually became shorter and shorter: the actors left - Yuri Yakovlev, Vladimir Etush... Shalevich became ill right during the performance. Emergency doctors noted high blood pressure, but he refused hospitalization. And yet, two days later, he ended up in the intensive care unit of the Botkin Hospital with convulsive syndrome, then fell into a coma. Without regaining consciousness, the actor died on December 21, 2016 at the age of 83.
"Three poplars on Plyushchikha"
Vyacheslav Anatolyevich lived a difficult life, including his personal life. He had four marriages. The affair with actress Valentina Titova, who ultimately preferred Vladimir Basov, was long and painful. On the screen, everything was seen differently: Shalevich, with one glance of his burning eyes, conquered women’s hearts. His heroes, even if they were sometimes painted in negative tones, were sincerely loved by the audience for their inner strength and strength of character.
When Soviet cinema collapsed, Shalevich’s texture was in demand in the 1990s. The title of one of his paintings from that period, “The Love of an Elderly Man,” became prophetic. His last wife, Tatyana, was 35 years younger, which gave rise to certain gossip. In 2001, their daughter Anna was born.
Of course, after large and serious works in the films of Tatyana Lioznova, Yuli Karasik, Aloys Branch, I had to lower the bar. The tasks were already set differently. Vyacheslav Anatolyevich actively starred in films that did not pretend to become an artistic discovery: “American Grandfather”, “Husband of the Hound of the Baskervilles”, “Fictitious Marriage”, “It is not recommended to offend women”.
"Fighter"
Many legends and speculations were associated with Yuri Kara’s film “The Master and Margarita,” which disappeared for a while (and was actually hidden by the producers). But, as it turned out, rumors about his artistic merits were greatly exaggerated. The film falls apart into separate pieces, looks poster-like and sloppy. It was filmed in the spirit of the “cooperative cinema” popular in the 1990s. Although in this film Shalevich conscientiously and convincingly played the role of the High Priest of Judea Joseph Caif. His human charm suited the spirit of Bulgakov's novel, but did not save the picture from failure.
Later, when the time came for the serial, Shalevich equally convincingly played both retired military men and crime bosses, Soviet politicians and adventurers. And the viewer believed him again. Popular television projects appeared: “Turkish March”, “Moscow Saga”, “Brezhnev”, “Star of the Epoch”, “Fighter”, “Women’s Logic”. His last film work was the role of Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev in the detective series “The Deli Case No. 1.” Of course, the actor noticed all the flaws on the set, sighed, but could not do anything. Once again becoming a "young father", he had to earn money. Regarding filming in TV series, Shalevich said: “All TV series are now similar to one another. Artists who
"Seventeen Moments of Spring"
they are busy, they are all similar too. I remember “Seventeen Moments of Spring”, there were five hundred artists, and everyone did what they usually don’t do. Tatyana Lioznova herself called me and invited me to audition to see me as different, different - this was a rare concern on the part of the director. Such people are becoming few and far between. But I didn’t understand then that I was filming with a brilliant director. Lioznova’s intelligence, grandiose energy, which cinema has never known before. She improvised a lot on the set: this arrival in the cafe, when the main characters did not say a word to each other, accompanied by unforgettable music. When work was underway on the film “Three Poplars on Plyushchikha,” she really wanted Pakhmutova’s music to sound in the film, but she initially refused. Lioznova invited her to watch the footage, and Alexandra Nikolaevna, seeing Efremov’s face when he put his hands on the steering wheel, gasped and agreed. I have never met directors like Lioznova.”
To be fair, we note that there are no more actors of the level of Vyacheslav Shalevich today...
FACT
From 1998 to 2012, People's Artist of Russia Vyacheslav Shalevich headed the Moscow Drama Theater named after Ruben Simonov, while simultaneously playing roles in the Vakhtangov Theater.
School years of Vyacheslav Shalevich
The future artist studied at secondary school No. 73 in Moscow, then at Metrostroy school No. 4. During his school years, Shalevich was a lot of hooligans. The mother worked a lot and the boy was raised by his aunt, who was an avid theatergoer. It was this relative who instilled in her nephew a love of theater. Another important factor that influenced his choice of profession was the proximity to his home of the Vakhtangov Theater and the Shchukin School. He often attended performances, knew many artists, and sneaked into rehearsals.
78-year-old Vyacheslav Shalevich: The birth of his daughter was a shock
She is 35 years younger than him. Their relationship caused controversy. They tried to accuse her of commercialism, and he of recklessness. And they just loved. Actor Vyacheslav Shalevich and his wife Tatyana overcame all conventions in order to become happy.
The famous actor, a legend, a gallant and delicate man, a favorite of women - Vyacheslav Shalevich never married actresses. It was taboo. Only novels. He has three marriages behind him. There are children and a granddaughter. His fourth wife Tanechka is a doctor by profession. She is almost half her husband's age. In her past life, before meeting Shalevich, everything was fine. After graduating from the Moscow Medical Institute and then residency, she worked as a gynecologist. A few years ago, she changed her profession and began working in the theater under the guidance of her husband. Their daughter was born when the actor turned 70 years old.
– Tell me how you met?
Vyacheslav Shalevich: – Quite by chance, at the birthday party of my friend, artist Misha Vorontsov. All this happened at the Ruben Simonov Theater. There was a large table, a lot of snacks, they sat well. And Tatyana Viktorovna was on my side. I was a widower then. And as soon as I saw a beautiful woman, I always jokingly said: “I’m getting married!” And as soon as I looked at this charm, naturally, I immediately said: “Well, I’ll marry you!” And Mikhail Ivanovich: “Be careful! She has two children!" I just stumbled. I’m communicating, but I’m calculating everything to myself, I’m thinking: two children, that’s all I needed.
Tatyana Vinogradova: – My mother was friends with Mikhail Ivanovich Vorontsov for many years. She was once his mom's therapist. That's why we ended up at the birthday party together. Of course, I would never have thought that this could happen to me.
Vyacheslav : - And then I was so cautious, I thought: I need to calm down little by little. There were some holidays, meetings where we crossed paths. Tanya came to the theater. And they told me that she was very nervous and was wondering why I no longer communicate with her. Well, I dared.
Tatyana: – Something directly pulled me to the theater. I couldn't leave it all alone. In fact, everything was not so easy. Only about a year later we went mushroom picking.
Vyacheslav: – Vorontsov’s wife, actress Elena Ivochkina, loves picking mushrooms. And we gathered for mushrooms. I remember the car was parked in the alley, and I got out in the hope of seeing Tatyana. And she came with her daughter. She was four years old then. I saw two wonderful faces. Lisa smiled solemnly. It was such a charming and joyful smile. And I thought: why can’t such a miracle be my property?! Everyone went to pick mushrooms, and Lisa and I sat by the fire, cooked and had a very nice conversation. So the process began. I visited Tanya. I just came and met another child, wonderful guys. I met my mother-in-law.
– And made a marriage proposal?
- No, the proposal was made much later. At first we just decided to live together.
– How did Tanya’s mother treat you?
“I’ll tell you honestly, I have the best mother-in-law in the world.” But at first Vera Ivanovna, the luxurious queen, was categorically against it. As soon as she found out that Tanya and I were planning something, she even stopped talking to her. Of course, what to hide, there is an age difference. It's clear. One day in some city a charming woman ran up to me: “Oh, hello! You are my favorite artist! I thought you were dead!”
Normal, of course. This is all our spontaneity. This is amazing. Therefore, I understood Vera Ivanovna. I remember we celebrated Tatyana’s day in a restaurant and Tanya and I went dancing. And seeing her mother’s worried look, she and I danced behind the columns so that she would worry less. Then, as it turned out, Mikhail Ivanovich Vorontsov had a conversation with her, and, in general, everything calmed down. And then, and even now, Vera Ivanovna somehow fell in love with me and treats me very tenderly.
– You started living together, and the children stayed with their grandmother?
Vyacheslav: – Tanya lived in two houses for almost a year. My God, how she managed everything! So much strength and patience. In the evening she came to me, and early in the morning she left for her home to get the children ready for school, kindergarten, to take them here and there. This is a real feat. And then we decided to renovate and live together. The children were transported. Somehow everything felt natural. We immediately went on vacation to Greece together. The children took me very well. Life was getting better. In general, everything was fine. And we began to think about the child.
Tatyana : – We really wanted a child. And just at that moment they decided to officially sign. We didn't have any big wedding. We very quietly went to the registry office and signed. Moreover, we had one wedding ring, my great-grandmother’s, which my mother finally gave to me. When I first got married, she didn’t give it to me. And here, as they say, it was passed on by inheritance. And so we had one wedding ring, and the lady at the registry office said: “Do you have any rings?” “Yes, we have one,” we answer. She: “Well, then somehow you’re on your own in the corridor.” So we signed it ourselves - in the corridor, with a ring, completely without witnesses.
– Your relationship probably caused different rumors and gossip, and not only among your loved ones?
Tatyana: – At first they talked a lot about us. There were all sorts of things. And there were calls at first, and I just didn’t listen to a lot of things. People called, introduced themselves to the theater community and said various unpleasant words, asking: “But after all, she got married! Such an age difference! There must be some benefit? There is only one benefit - just love. At first they asked: “Well, you’re probably not from Moscow?” I say: “No, from Moscow.” They don’t let up: “Well, perhaps there’s no apartment?” I say: “A three-room apartment in the center.” They continue: “Didn’t you have a car before?” And again by: “And I used to have a car.” In general, there was no mercantile interest. And we were just together, and at some point everything else ceased to exist.
– How did Vyacheslav Anatolyevich look after you?
- Very beautiful. I was amazed that when he came to my house, one might say, on one of our first dates, he was with tulips. This is a sign for me. No one has ever given me tulips in my life. And they are my favorite flowers. So I immediately thought: everything is not just like that. Everything was so natural. It felt like we had been together for many years. But on the other hand, thirteen years have already passed, but it seems like we met recently. For us, all these years are like one day. - Were you jealous?
– Of course (laughs). There was one fan who came to every performance with a burgundy rose. And when I saw one burgundy rose at home, I was completely indignant.
-Are you jealous of your wife?
- Yes I am jealous! Maybe pointless. Tanya is very offended.
– What is it like to become a father at seventy?
Vyacheslav: – This is an incredible feeling of happiness. Our Anechka was born in the summer. When I came to the theater and at the opening of the season my colleagues found out that I had a daughter, everyone was in a state of shock. They looked at me with incredible fear.
Tatyana : – Vyacheslav Anatolyevich was very worried. It always seemed to him that something would be wrong. All the time he called the doctors he knew and asked if she would have any kind of birthmark. She was born at night, at two o'clock. And in the morning you came to me, already holding her in your arms, with the words: “Is everything all right with her? She doesn't have six fingers? Is she doing like everyone else?” (Laughs.)
Vyacheslav: - Yes, it’s lively. He's still dynamite. I remember I said something to her, and she said to me: “Dad, don’t contradict me.” I don't have such words. When I go somewhere, I say: “Ann, what should I bring you?” And she: “Bring me something delicious.” These are the things that amaze you. And of course, energy, incredible character.
– Tanya, you were a successful doctor and suddenly changed your profession?
– Every evening we talked only about the theater. I already knew absolutely everything that was happening there. And at nine in the morning I had to be at work. This was hard. And then, there’s not much to talk about my work, I’m a gynecologist, it’s not very interesting. My current position is deputy artistic director. All economic issues are my responsibility - papers, contracts, purely administrative work. But we hardly see each other at work. Vyacheslav Anatolyevich is exclusively engaged in creativity, only sometimes signing documents.
Vyacheslav: – If before we came home, I told her about the theater, she about her problems, now our problems have merged and we talk more about love. Something new has appeared in our relationship.
- Who is the head in this house?
Vyacheslav: - Tanya. He who commands is the master. I submit completely and in everything to Tatyana’s influence.
Tatyana: - This is my man. I would never tolerate a man doing something in the kitchen. I don't like this. I cook myself. Vyacheslav Anatolyevich doesn’t even know how to open the refrigerator. I have to prepare everything, put it on the table, and it’s so convenient for me.
Vyacheslav: - Not to mention the fact that I don’t know how to drive a nail or how to hang a picture. All the renovations were done on Tanya - the dachas, the apartments, the shopping, and the selection of building materials. It's all on you.
Tatyana: - Of course. That's why on March 8th you gave me a drill. Everyone is still laughing. This is how we live (laughs). It's very easy for us. We understand each other perfectly. I’ll say something, and Slava: “I was just thinking about that.” Or vice versa.
– When you have to leave, do you worry?
Vyacheslav: – On the phone all the time. How are the children, how are they at home, is everything okay? Of course I'm worried. You can already tell by the voice whether the house is in order or not. Tanya always asks me: “What’s wrong with your voice - are you tired? Have you eaten? Sometimes I say: “Do you remember that I love you? Why don’t I forget you?” And she: “Yes, yes, I remember, I remember!”
Tatyana: – Everything is immediately determined by the voice. True, one day I didn’t immediately understand what had happened. I'm waiting at home. We had to go to the dacha after the performance. And suddenly a call. I called a little earlier. “I,” he says, “will leave now, don’t worry.” But I can’t understand: “Where are you going? Are we going to the dacha?” - “I can’t do it today, I’m going to the hospital now.” That's all. This is where everything suddenly went downhill for me. Slava was seriously injured at the theater. There was a sea of blood, stitches were required. But his sense of humor never leaves him. He amused all the doctors. He told jokes. And he kept joking to me on the phone: “Can you hear the sirens? This is me coming! All the time with humor. Any woman is first and foremost a mother, and I still, willingly or unwillingly, even treat my husband like a child.
Vyacheslav : - When they ask me what is most important about your wife, I say: “She is a mother, first of all.” The children adore her incredibly.
– Vyacheslav Anatolyevich, have you developed a formula for love for yourself?
– I don’t have any formula for love. If it arises, I would like it to never end or fade away. Sometimes I sit, look at Tanya, and she says: “What are you looking at?”, and I say: “I like you and that’s it!”
More about personal
Vyacheslav Shalevich got married for the first time in his first year at college. He studied in parallel classes with his future wife. Their marriage lasted only 15 days. In his second marriage, the artist had a son. They lived with their wife for three years and divorced. The reason for the breakup was love for actress Valentina Titova. It was like crazy. “I have done incredible things. After the performance, I sat in the “Red Arrow” to give her flowers in the morning,” Vyacheslav Anatolyevich said in an interview. But Titova got a role in the film “Blizzard” from director Vladimir Basov, and they got married.
The actor's third wife Galina was a fashion designer and master of sports in figure skating. As Vyacheslav Anatolyevich says, he fell in love without looking back. The couple had a son, Ivan. They lived together for 31 years. The death of his wife was a heavy blow for Shalevich. The influence of the street and his mother's departure broke Ivan. He became addicted to drugs... But now it's all over. My son became interested in journalism. The actor’s fourth wife, Tatyana, helped Ivan overcome his craving for drugs. Now Ivan works in his father’s theater as a sound engineer.

Shchukin School
The guy was choosing between two hobbies close to him - acting and journalism. Vyacheslav was a great connoisseur of literature, very literate and well-read. After graduating from school, he applied to two universities at the same time: the Shchukin Theater School and the Faculty of Philology at the Pedagogical Institute. Shalevich chose theatrical. He got there on his first try. He studied at the course of director Joseph Matveevich Rapoport, and the actor also calls the great Ruben Simonov his teacher.
As a third-year student, Shalevich already began acting in productions at the Vakhtangov Theater, first as an actor in crowd scenes.
The beginning of Shalevich’s creative path in the theater
Shalevich graduated from Shchuka in 1958. Then he himself went to the theater without an invitation. Vakhtangov and insisted on being listened to. As they say, “the city’s arrogance takes over.” Such perseverance of the young artist, coupled with talent, did their job - Shalevich was accepted into the troupe. It is interesting that the young artist could have been sent to the city of Norilsk, where they were going to open a branch of the Vakhtangov Theater, but this decision was later canceled.
Shalevich made his debut with the role of Stepan in Ruben Simonov’s production of “The Unwritten Law.” In this performance, the artist worked in tandem with actress Yulia Borisova, whom he himself calls his ideal stage partner. Later, with Borisova, Vyacheslav Anatolyevich played in several more performances: “The Lost Son”, “Guilty Without Guilt”, etc.
“WILL YOU LOOK INTO HIS APARTMENT, FOR YOUR FAME?”
– Probably many in the acting community were against your marriage?
“Strangers called: “Who are you, why did you grab onto the artist - are you coveting his apartment for fame?” I was very worried. I tried to justify myself: I’m not “dowryless” either.
Born in Moscow, into a wealthy family. Dad was an engineer, mother was a famous doctor. And I work as an obstetrician-gynecologist. They almost gave their own separate three-room apartment, near the Taganskaya metro station, for the use of Ivan, Shalevich’s son from his third marriage. – Ed .). I have a car, a dacha...
It is difficult to suspect me of striving for self-PR: after all, I am not from a public profession, and I do not need PR. But they still whispered behind their backs. Slava reacted wisely and advised me: “Don’t pay attention, they’ll talk and forget.”
I can’t say that he looked after me like a father. On the contrary, sometimes I felt even older. Since I am a “mother” by nature, I need to take care of everyone and feed them.
– At Malakhov’s show they said that you had “taken over” the Ruben Simonov Theater, where Shalevich was the artistic director, and you were the director for some time. As if it was because of your illiterate leadership that the theater ultimately collapsed.
– Vyacheslav Anatolyevich headed the Ruben Simonov Theater shortly before we met him. Before him, Yakovlev was the artistic director there. But Yuri Vasilyevich left his post of his own free will - because running a theater is very difficult. The position was offered to Shalevich, he agreed.
He worked with great enthusiasm - he selected interesting plays and directors, and found sponsors. And the productions were a success, drawing full houses. There were successful tours, including abroad. Appointing me to the post of director was the idea of Vyacheslav Anatolyevich himself. The former director, Valery Kaluzhanov, died. Finding a new faithful assistant is difficult and time-consuming. Therefore, one day my husband said: “Tanya, I need your help in the theater. So that you leave your clinic and become a director at the theater.”
I tried to object: I have no leadership experience, this takes more than one year to learn. But my husband said, “You’ll learn as you go. This is very important to me - your support not only at home, but also in the theater.” And I agreed. Again they whispered behind his back - that Shalevich got his gynecologist wife a job at the theater. But I have already learned not to react. We worked and did our job honestly. Well, when my husband began to get sick, the affairs of the theater faded into the background. So it happened...

Vyacheslav Shalevich: career and fate of the Soviet artist
Vyacheslav Shalevich
Vyacheslav Anatolyevich Shalevich is known to audiences for the many roles he has played in films and theater productions. He was known and loved by many television viewers for several decades. He played wonderfully in such famous films as “Seventeen Moments of Spring”, “Hockey Players”, “Three Poplars on Plyushchikha” and many other Soviet and Russian films.
Fame and success came to Vyacheslav Shalevich relatively quickly. But the life of an actor started out very difficult. The future famous artist was born in 1934 in Moscow. His mother left her husband, an NKVD officer, out of jealousy. Soon after the birth of his son, Vyacheslav's father was arrested and repressed by the Soviet authorities. Personal life
When Vyacheslav Shalevich was in the 8th grade of high school, the young man began dating a girl his own age. Although many biographies of the actor claim that the young people were classmates, this is not true: the actor studied at a school only for boys. Upon reaching the age of 18, the lovers immediately went to the registry office and formalized the relationship. But this ill-advised union lasted just over two weeks, and the young people separated.

But this family also fell apart, this time because of Vyacheslav’s love for actress Valentina Titova. But then the woman left her lover for actor and director Vladimir Basov, whom she officially married.

After his second marriage, Shalevich had a series of high-profile star romances. Since the artist always remained a gentleman, Vyacheslav does not name the names of these actresses and the public knows only his romantic relationship with Elsa Lezhdey simply because this relationship was in plain sight. However, none of the actresses was able to bewitch Shalevich so much that he decided on the next marriage. But an artist-fashion designer named Galina was able to charm the artist, and the couple lived together for more than 30 years, until the death of Vyacheslav’s third wife. From this relationship, the actor left behind his second child, his son Ivan.

The artist had an incredibly difficult time with Galina’s departure. His relationship with his youngest son deteriorated, who became involved in a terrible addiction to drugs. Tatyana Vinogradova, a doctor by profession, who became the fourth and last wife of the artist, helped both Vyacheslav Anatolyevich and Ivan get out of the deadlock. In 2001, when Shalevich was already 67 years old, the actor became a father again: his daughter Anna was born, who is already showing interest in the theater and is studying in an acting studio.
