Tom Hanks - biography

Hollywood actor and proud father of four, Tom Hanks began his career in the 1980s with a series of comedies. A decade later, his name was on everyone's lips after playing lawyer Andrew Beckett in Philadelphia and the completely different character of Forrest Gump. Tom won two Oscars for Best Actor and later made women go crazy for Sleepless in Seattle. He captivated audiences playing in the films “Apollo 13” and “Saving Private Ryan.” Hanks' achievements also include work as a director, producer and composer.

Theater career

Tom Hanks was born in 1956 in Concord, California. After his parents' divorce, he stayed with his father, brother and sister. The family traveled a lot across the states, which is why Tom never stayed in any school for more than six months. He had practically no friends; Hanks simply did not have time to make them. He was very shy, but humor helped the future actor cope with stress.

After graduating from high school in 1974, Tom attended Hayward College, where he began studying acting. The decision was influenced by watching Eugene O'Neill's play The Ice Seller. Hanks entered the theater club at the University of California at Sacramento. He appeared in Anton Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard, which led to his first professional work in Ohio with the Great Lakes Theater Company. After performing in Shakespeare plays for three years, Hanks became so addicted that he eventually dropped out of college. The next step was moving to New York to participate in endless auditions.

In the 1980s, luck smiled on Tom. He was invited to the filming of the film “He Knows You Are Alone.” That same year, the actor became a household name after he landed the lead role in the comedy series Bosom Buddies. It was based on the bizarre situation in which Hanks and his co-star Peter Scolari regularly dress as women in order to rent rooms in a women's hotel.

Personal life

Tom Hanks is one of the few famous Hollywood actors who doesn't give in to the yellow press. The film actor is a wonderful family man, a caring husband and father.

Tom Hanks with his wife Rita Wilson

In 1978, Tom Hanks married fellow University of California student Samantha Lewis. Mutual acquaintances were surprised that at that time an unknown young man managed to win the heart of this girl, who was persistently rumored as an unapproachable hunter of a fat wallet. Nevertheless, the wedding took place, and soon after, Tom and Samantha became parents when they had a son, Colin, who would later follow in his father's footsteps. A little later, a daughter, Elizabeth Ann, was born.

But due to the mercantile demands of her wife, regular financial scandals, as well as Samantha’s constant weekends without her husband and children, the marriage began to crack.

Tom Hanks with son Colin

In 1988, Tom Hanks remarried. This time his chosen one was actress Rita Wilson. The couple has two sons - Truman Theodore and Chester Marlon.

Tom Hanks has already become a grandfather. In 2011, a granddaughter was born into the family of the film actor, who was named Olivia. In 2013, Olivia gave birth to a sister, Charlotte.

Tom and Rita lead a relatively calm, modest and measured life. The couple regularly attend the Church of the Patriarchate of Constantinople, as both are Orthodox.

Journalists have repeatedly discussed the celebrity’s personal life, reporting that the married life of Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson is going through a serious crisis, but, nevertheless, the couple is coping with difficulties.

First film roles

In 1984, Tom Hanks teamed up with director Ron Howard in the film Splash. The whimsical romantic comedy about a man who meets a mermaid was the perfect vehicle for the actor to showcase his talent. Confident of his attractiveness as the hero of funny films, Tom continued his path to the top with the films “Bachelor Party” and “The Man in the Red Shoe.” He then portrayed a spoiled young rich man in Volunteers and a lawyer named Walter Fielding in The Debt Pit. Hanks also starred with Jackie Gleason in the comedy Nothing in Common, after which he tried his hand at drama. His debut work was the film “We Always Say Goodbye.”

Although it became clear to the directors that Tom was capable of transforming himself, the actor himself still stuck to comedic roles. He played a detective in the film “Network of Evil” along with Dan Aykroyd. A year later, Hanks charmed the public with the film “Big,” where he showed a man whose body was possessed by a boy who wanted to become an adult. To prepare for the role, Tom spent much of his time learning to imitate the mannerisms of his 13-year-old co-star David Moscow. For his next role as a comedian in “The Highlight,” he performed several times on the club stage.

Philadelphia and Forrest Gump

After two light films, “The Suburbs” and “Turner and Hooch,” Hank was disappointed. His work with Meg Ryan in Joe Versus the Volcano was a box office failure. The next black comedy, The Bonfire of the Vanities, where Tom played with Bruce Willis, Melanie Griffith and young Kirsten Dunst, was also considered unsuccessful. Earning only $15 million against a $47 million budget, it was called crude and weak. Tom then took some time off to spend time with his family. He returned in 1992 with a cameo role in the drama Soaring High, also known as Glider.

It is always difficult for an actor to return to action when the public and critics call his work unsuccessful. However, Hanks' professionalism and desire to play allowed him to recharge. He played an alcoholic middle-aged coach opposite Geena Davis, Madonna and Rosie O'Donnell in A League of Their Own, which was a hit. The next film, “Philadelphia,” showed Tom in the role of a gay lawyer who suffers from AIDS. To do this, Tom did a lot of research, talking openly with patients and gay men. Under close observation, he lost weight so that he appeared emaciated and dying. The efforts were appreciated, and Hanks received an Oscar. Literally immediately he received a second statuette for his role as Forrest Gump in the drama of the same name. The plot is built around the adventures of a simple-minded man who, despite his inferiority, lives a life more eventful than many people with twice the IQ. Hanks successfully brought the fictional character to life on screen, turning the controversial Forrest into a folk hero.

Main roles

By 1995, Hanks was earning an eight-figure salary for his films. He starred as Apollo 13 commander James Lovell, a true astronaut who tries to return the ship to Earth after the accident. The director was Ron Howard, who helped the actor make his debut in Hollywood. Three years later, Tom again became a star thanks to Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan. He and seven other actors endured harsh conditions for many days preparing for their role alongside the soldiers. The film grossed $190 million and Hanks was nominated for an Oscar. Equally compelling this year was the portrayal of a prison guard in The Green Mile, based on the Stephen King novel about a supernaturally gifted death row inmate. Behind the scenes, Tom voiced Woody the cowboy in Toy Story and Toy Story 2. He also experimented as a director and screenwriter in the film “That Thing You Do.” Hanks later executive produced the Emmy Award-winning 12-episode miniseries From the Earth to the Moon.

Actor career

At the same time, Tom started a family, marrying his classmate Samantha Lewis. In 1977, the young couple had a son, and Hanks had to seriously think about his daily bread. The family settled in New York, a city of great opportunities, and the young man began knocking on the doors of theaters and film studios in search of work. Tom first appeared on screen in 1980, and, like many young actors, he began his career with TV series. In one of them, director Ron Howard noticed him, and in 1984 he offered him the main role in the film “Flash.” Tom coped with the task perfectly, but the picture did not bring him either worldwide fame or the long-awaited financial independence. To support his family, which already had two children, the actor continued to star in TV series and low-quality films like “Bachelor Party” (1984).

Tom Hanks in the film “Big Party” The situation changed dramatically in 1988, when the film “Big” was released. In it, Hanks masterfully played a boy who suddenly turned into a grown man. The role, which was claimed by Robert de Niro, Harrison Ford and Robin Williams, became a real gift of fate for Tom. His virtuoso acting earned him his first Oscar nomination, and the fee for the film allowed him to solve all his financial problems. After “Big,” Hanks began to be willingly invited to comedic roles. Over the course of several years, his filmography was replenished with such films as “Turner and Hooch” (1989), “Highlight” (1988), “The Suburbs” (1989). There were, of course, outright disastrous films, but it was already obvious that a white streak had begun in the actor’s life.

Tom Hanks in the film “Big” In 1992, Tom moved away from the comedy role and played a rude, always drunk coach in the film “Champions League”. The film is interesting because it became Hanks' directorial debut, and one of the roles in it was played by Madonna herself.

Tom Hanks in the film Sleepless in Seattle Hanks gained real popularity in 1993 after the release of the melodrama Sleepless in Seattle, where he played a touching single father together with Meg Ryan. In the same year, the role of a homosexual dying from AIDS in the film Philadelphia cemented his success and brought the actor his first Oscar. And his brilliant work in the film “Forrest Gump”, which became a Hollywood classic and a sensation in 1994, replenished his creative treasury with a second precious statuette and made him a world-famous star. Trailer of the film with the participation of Tom Hanks “Forrest Gump” It began for Tom in the mid-90s truly a golden time. Almost every film with his participation became a bestseller and was nominated for the highest Academy Award. One by one, such film masterpieces as Saving Private Ryan (1998), The Green Mile (1999), and Cast Away (2000) appeared on the screens.

Tom Hanks and Matt Damon in the film “Saving Private Ryan” A highlight of 2002 was the magnificent acting duet of Hanks and Leo DiCaprio in the film “Catch Me If You Can.” In the melodrama “You've Got Mail,” Tom met again with Meg Ryan, and in the comedy “Larry Crown” he was accompanied by the brilliant Julia Roberts.

Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio in the film “Catch Me If You Can” And how well the actor fit into the image of Robert Langdon in the film adaptations of Dan Brown’s works “The Da Vinci Code” (2006), “Angels and Demons” (2009) and “Inferno” (2016)! Finally, Hanks had the opportunity to choose a job to his liking and to this day never ceases to amaze viewers with the versatility and depth of his acting talent. Trailer of the film with the participation of Tom Hanks “Inferno” Tom is one of the box office record holders; projects with his participation brought the creators about four billion dollars. It's funny that the most profitable of them was the cartoon Toy Story 3, in which he only voiced one of the characters.

Tom Hanks and Castaway

In 2000, Hanks reincarnated to play a man stranded on a desert island in Robert Zemeckis's Cast Away. The actor received a Golden Globe for his role as FedEx inspector Chuck Noland, whose plane crashes over the Pacific Ocean during a storm. Since the plot partly took place in Moscow, Russian actors such as Valentina Ananina, Dmitry Dyuzhev and Anna Frolovtseva were involved in the episodes.

Hanks' character spent four years on a desert island. There was no one around except for a Wilson brand volleyball. So Chuck had his only friend. Some compared the story to the legendary novel Robinson Crusoe, and there were also suspicions that the film was based on a true story, but this was never confirmed. It took Apollo 13 screenwriter William Broyles Jr. six years to come up with Cast Away.

Filming was suspended for a year so Hanks could lose the 23 kilograms he gained specifically to be plump while playing Chuck before the crash. The film was another triumph for Tom, earning $429,632,142 worldwide against a budget of $90 million. FedEx and Wilson also received their share of glory. Despite the fact that the plane was the first to crash in the story, representatives of the brand believed that this would not have a negative impact. They turned out to be right.

Tom Hanks

There are actors in Hollywood who can safely be awarded the title of “America's favorite actor”; multiple Oscar winner Tom Hanks is certainly one of them.

He was born to Amos Hanks and his wife Janet on July 9, 1956 in Concord, California.

The Hanks family was large - Tom had a sister, Sandra, and brothers, Jim and Larry; the harder it was for Hanks Sr. when he divorced his wife and moved to Reno, Nevada, with four children.

However, they did not stay there for long - the Hanks often moved from place to place, and for several years a string of many cities, schools and stepmothers flashed before the eyes of little Tom. Finally, after several years, the Hanks settled in Oakland, California.

Tom became interested in acting while still in school - later, upon entering the University of California at Sacramento, he continued to participate in theatrical productions; An excellent school for the actor was long-term work on the theater stage, where he perfectly succeeded in portraying Shakespearean heroes.

Tom met his first wife, Samantha Lewis, in college; in January 1978 they got married.

Tom left his studies to devote himself full-time to acting; lived in New York for some time and then moved to Los Angeles.

Hanks's first screen appearance was in a small role in the 1980 low-budget thriller I Know You're Alone; this work did not bring much fame to the young actor, unlike filming in the TV series “Bosom Friends”, where Tom got one of the main roles.

After the series closed after only two seasons, Tom managed to appear in several more sitcoms, after which director Ron Howard drew attention to him.

An actor who received greater recognition from audiences as a director, Howard invited Tom to the film Splash, which became Hanks's first big role.

The romantic story about the love of a young man and a mermaid performed by Daryl Hannah received an Oscar nomination for best screenplay, and managed to gross almost seventy million dollars at the box office.

The comedy The Hangover, released a few months after Splash, was less successful commercially, as was The Man with the Red Shoe, a remake of the French film starring Pierre Richard; in a number of his subsequent works, such as the comedies “Volunteers” of 1985 (notable for the fact that his future second wife, Rita Wilson, played in it with Tom), “Breakthrough”, “Nothing in Common”, “Networks of Evil” Tom skillfully created the image of a simple charming guy, but these films can be classified more likely as good comedies, but not hits. The painting “We Always Say Goodbye” stands out somewhat from this series; In this war melodrama, Hanks moved a little away from creating the image of a carefree young man, which he was so successful in his comedic works.

Along with career successes, the actor’s personal life was not so rosy; Despite the presence of two children - son Colin and daughter Elizabeth - Hanks's marriage to Samantha was dissolved in the spring of 1987.

Finally, in 1988, the film “Big” directed by Penny Marshall was released. The film became an event in Hanks' career, not only collecting more than one and a half hundred million dollars at the worldwide box office, but also bringing Tom a Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination.

Shortly before the premiere of "Big," Tom got married - this time his chosen one was actress Rita Wilson, with whom he had known for many years and worked together more than once.

The young actor’s career developed rapidly, although it cannot be said that all the films in which he starred became hits - for example, the films that followed “Big”, “Highlight” with Sally Field and “The Suburbs,” had rather modest box office receipts.

Hanks continued to work a lot in his usual role as a comedic actor - both in the police comedy “Turner and Hooch” and in the film “Joe Versus the Volcano,” which is notable, among other things, for the fact that it began Tom’s collaboration with actress Meg Ryan.

In 1990, Hanks starred with the famous Brian De Palma in The Bonfire of the Vanities, where his partners were Bruce Willis and Melanie Griffith; It’s worth saying that despite such big names in the crew, the film received five Golden Raspberry nominations and failed at the box office.

Perhaps this was one of Hanks's last professional failures - subsequently, most of his works either became objects of praise from film critics or were distinguished by impressive box office receipts (and often both).

In 1992, Hanks again worked with Penny Marshall in the film A League of Their Own, along with Madonna and Geena Davis, and the following year he again starred with Meg Ryan in the romantic comedy Sleepless in Seattle.

Nora Ephron, at that time better known as a good screenwriter (for example, she was the author of the script for the film When Harry Met Sally, where Ryan also played), was taking her first steps in directing - but this picture became her unconditional success. Despite the fact that Sleepless was only nominated for prestigious awards (Hanks was also nominated for a Golden Globe), the film won great love from the audience, and the box office was impressive.

In the same year, the film “Philadelphia” was released, which proved to all doubters (if there were any, of course) that Hanks is not only a talented, but also a very versatile actor - his role as a lawyer dying of AIDS was rightfully awarded a Golden Globe. , prizes from the American Film Academy and the Berlin Film Festival.

Hanks's next work only confirmed his high status as an actor - Robert Zemeckis's Forrest Gump collected an impressive box office, was rightfully noted by critics, received six Oscars (one of them went to Tom) and three Golden Globes (one of which again went to Hanks).

In 1995, Hansk again worked with Ron Howard - this time he got the role of an astronaut in the film "Apollo 13", where his partner, as in "Forrest Gump", is Gary Sinise, and also voiced one of the roles in the popular animated film " History of toys"

The film "That Thing You Do" had a very modest commercial success, but is notable for the fact that in it Hanks first tried himself as a film director; He also acted as director of several television projects.

The film “Saving Private Ryan” by Steven Spielberg was doomed to success, so to speak, “by default” - a venerable director, an impressive cast (such popular actors as Tom Sizemore, Vin Diesel, Matt Damon, Denis Farina and a lot others). For his role in this film, Hanks received Oscar and Golden Globe nominations.

In 1998, Hanks again teamed up with Meg Ryan and Nora Ephron to film You've Got Mail - and again the romantic story, somewhat reminiscent of Sleepless in Seattle, was a great success.

In 1999, Tom participated in the dubbing of the second part of the cartoon “Toy Story”; in the same year, a film was released that was to become another important milestone in Hanks’ career – “The Green Mile.”

Hanks immediately liked the script for “The Green Mile” - a joint work of writer Stephen King and Frank Darabont, who made waves with “The Shawshank Redemption” several years ago. The film became a high point for actor Michael Clarke Duncan, bringing him several prestigious film nominations, but Hanks' work was also highly appreciated by critics and audiences.

But in the actor’s next work, the film “Cast Away,” directed by Robert Zemeckis, no one could compete with the actor, if only because Hanks brilliantly solos most of the film in the role of a man forced to spend several years alone on a desert island. Hanks, emaciated and overgrown for filming, received a Golden Globe for this role, losing to the inimitable “gladiator” Russell Crowe in the fight for the Oscar.

Hanks is working with Oscar-winning Briton Sam Mendes on the film Road to Perdition. This gangster drama, which also starred Paul Newman and Jude Law, probably came as a surprise to fans of Hanks' work - because this time their favorite played the role of... a killer.

Hanks makes a radical change yet again in Steven Spielberg's Catch Me If You Can with Leonardo DiCaprio, now playing an FBI agent. However, in the film “Gentleman's Games” by the Coen brothers, Hanks again appears before the audience in the role of a lawbreaker - however, this time not a murderer, but “just” a casino robber.

After such roles, Tom again returns to the image of an ordinary (but at the same time damnably sweet and charming) person in his next collaboration with Steven Spielberg, “The Terminal,” where the charming Catherine Zeta-Jones becomes his partner.

A small role in “Elvis Has Left the Building” precedes Tom’s next work on an animated film – this time, together with Robert Zemeckis, Hanks is working on the creation of “The Polar Express”; a couple of years later, Hanks will again give his voice to one of the heroes of the animated film - in the film “Cars”.

One of Hanks' last works in cartoons - the well-known role of Woody in the third part of the animated film "Toy Story" - was released in the middle of this year.

The books of American writer Dan Brown have become bestsellers around the world. Together with his old friend Ron Howard, Hanks creates the character of Professor Robert Langdon, who, like Professor Henry Jones played by Harrison Ford, is forced to combine a quiet and calm career as a scientist with chases, shootouts and breathtaking stunts.

The creative duo Hanks-Howard has repeatedly achieved success - and the film adaptations of Brown's books "The Da Vinci Code" and "Angels and Demons" they created were no exception, grossing more than a billion dollars at the box office.

Many fans of Dan Brown's work are eagerly awaiting the release of the third film about Professor Langdon - "The Lost Symbol", where Hanks will again play the role of the fearless professor.

Today, Hanks is not only one of the most respected and highly paid actors in Hollywood - he is a successful producer (among his latest works is the musical "Mamma Mia!"), writes scripts and at the same time manages to raise four children with his wife - two from his first marriage and two from the second.

After Outcast

Having distinguished himself with stunning roles, Hanks continued to delight fans in the new millennium. His good-guy charisma has earned Tom comparisons with screen legends of the past such as Jimmy Stewart, Cary Grant, Henry Fonda and Gary Cooper. In 2002, he received an award from the Board of Directors of the American Film Institute for his lifetime contributions to the enrichment of American culture through motion pictures and television. Hanks became the youngest actor in history to receive this honor.

Tom's other films that are forever on the list of the best include Catch Me If You Can with Leonardo DiCaprio, The Terminal with Catherine Zeta-Jones, The Polar Express and The Da Vinci Code. In 2005, Hanks produced and wrote the animated short film A Trip to the Moon 3D. He also produced the cartoon "Ant Storm", the film "Top Ten" with James McAvoy and Benedict Cumberbatch and "Charlie Wilson's War", in which he starred. Hanks' education and experience allowed him to become an executive producer on such films as Evan Almighty and Mamma Mia!

Returning to the screens in 2009, Tom played in the comedy-drama “The Great Buck Howard” and the sequel to “The Da Vinci Code” called “Angels and Demons.” Despite this, the actor was very fascinated by the work behind the scenes, so for some time he completely devoted himself to producing and directing work. In 2011, Hanks released Larry Crowne, continuing to voice Woody in both the third Toy Story and the short films Hawaiian Vacation, The Impostor and Jolly Rex.

Actor career

Tom Hanks' first roles on screen were seen by director Ron Howard. He invited the artist to play the lead role in the romantic comedy Splash. The audience greeted the film well, and Tom began to increasingly receive invitations to film from various filmmakers. Films with the participation of the young star received positive reviews from both the public and critics, but commercially the work was a failure.

His role in the comedy “Big” was of great importance for the development of Tom Hanks’ acting career. In the film, the actor plays a thirteen-year-old boy who overnight turns into a thirty-year-old man. The artist was able to convey all the emotions of a child who suddenly found himself in the “adult” world. After this comedy, Tom became even more famous, received a Golden Globe and his first nomination for a golden statuette.

In subsequent films, the actor tried on new images. Among the paintings were:

  • Turner and Hooch.
  • "The Bonfire of the Vanities."
  • "Joe Versus Vulcan"
  • "Terminal".
  • "A league of their own."

Unfortunately, critics and viewers were not enthusiastic about the works. For Tom, these films became excellent training for larger roles.

Tom Hanks gained real world fame by starring in films of the nineties of the twentieth century. In 1993, the actor played the role of a single father in the film Sleepless in Seattle. A little later, he played a gay man dying of AIDS in the drama Philadelphia of the same year, for which he received an Oscar.

However, the main role in another drama called “Forest Gump”, which was directed by the famous director Robert Zemeckis, created a real sensation. According to the plot, Tom was supposed to play a mentally retarded young man who, despite his stupidity, achieved great success in life. The film received a large portion of applause and six Oscars. Among these awards, one was “For Best Actor”. Tom Hanks suddenly became a national hero, raising a statue above his head for the second time in a row.

Having received recognition of his talent in the form of a golden statuette, the actor could already choose which films were worth starring in and which were not. Tom agreed to star in the film “Apollo 13,” about an unsuccessful flight to the moon. This was followed by an invitation to the role of Captain John Miller in the drama Saving Private Ryan. The result was an extraordinary work about the heroism of soldiers (later it was included in the list of cultural heritage of the United States of America). The actor also accepted an offer to star in the 1998 comedy “You’ve Got Mail.” Later he starred in the mystical drama “The Green Mile” based on the novel by Stephen King.

In 2000, Tom starred in the film “Cast Away,” which was loved by the whole world. In the story, the main character finds himself on a desert island after a plane crash. Hanks's character is the only survivor. Subsequently, he learned to make fire, made a friend - a volleyball, and built a home. The film shows the path of the struggle for life, the comprehension of all previous events. A similar situation is described in the book “Robinson Crusoe” by Daniel Defoe. Fans of the film demanded a continuation, but the directors had their own vision of the situation. They didn't intend to drag out the plot.

In 2011, Tom planned to star in the film “The Lost Symbol,” but director Ron Howard, who directed “Angels and Demons” and “The Da Vinci Code” based on the books of Dan Brown, refused to base it on another work by the writer.

It is worth noting that Tom Hanks did not lose his fame with the arrival of young stars in the new century. Films with the actor were still the same success. In addition, Tom enjoyed playing with Leonardo DiCaprio in the film “Catch Me If You Can” and with Emma Thompson in “Saving Mr. Banks.” Hanks also played one of the main roles in the science fiction movie Cloud Atlas, which also starred another famous actor, Hugh Grant.

Critics have repeatedly noted Tom's work in Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close alongside Sandra Bullock. The artist also said that he was very lucky to work with Julia Roberts in the comedy “Larry Crown”.

In 2020, the actor starred in Carly Rae Jepsen's video for the song I Really Like You. Many viewers positively assessed the new image, where Tom sang in the voice of an artist. He himself noted that it was a “funny show.”

Tom Hanks today

In 2013, Hanks made his Broadway debut in Lucky Guy, based on the life of journalist Mike McAlary, for which he received a Tony Award nomination. Later that year, he starred in the drama film Captain Phillips, based on the true story of an American cargo ship hijacked by Somali pirates in 2009. The subsequent comedy, Saving Mr. Banks, was also based on real events that took place during the filming of Walt Disney's Mary Poppins. Hanks then portrayed lawyer James Donovan, who defended Soviet spy Rudolf Abel in Steven Spielberg's Bridge of Spies. Also in 2016, he appeared in the lead role in Clint Eastwood's drama Miracle on the Hudson, based on the true story of a pilot who crash-landed on a river.

After his role in The Circle, Tom reunited with Spielberg for The Secret File, where he portrayed Ben Bradlee, executive editor of The Washington Post. In 2020, Hanks played another real-life person, Fred Rogers, in the biopic A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. Three films are coming out: “Greyhound”, “BIOS” and “News from Around the World”.

Tom Hanks family

Back in 1977, Hanks became friends with classmate Susan Dillingham. The aspiring actress later took the stage name Samantha Lewis. The couple married in 1978. They had a son, Colin, who also became an actor, and a daughter, Elizabeth. Unfortunately, the marriage broke up in 1980, after which Tom was afraid to enter into a series of unstable relationships. He saw a psychologist before he started dating Bosom Buddies co-star Rita Wilson. They got married in 1988.

Today the couple are still together. They have two sons: Chester and Truman. Tom and Rita are one of the favorite couples in the film industry, besides Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn. They recently appeared at the 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards, where Hanks received the honorary Cecil B. DeMille Award for Lifetime Achievement in Cinematography. During his acceptance speech, Tom thanked his entire family.

Thomas Jeffrey "Tom" Hanks (born July 9, 1956, Concord, California) is an American actor and producer who started out in family comedies (Big, 1988), but by the age of forty Over the years, he has achieved universal recognition as a serious dramatic actor and received two Oscar awards in a row - for his leading roles in the films Philadelphia (1993) and Forrest Gump (1994) - he is one of only two actors in the history of world cinema to receive this award two years in a row. Tom Hanks is an Orthodox Christian and attends one of the American parishes of the Patriarchate of Constantinople. In addition to his Oscar-winning roles, Hanks is known for his collaborations with director Steven Spielberg. As of 2006, Hanks's films have grossed more (approximately $6 billion) than any other actor. His most profitable film is The Da Vinci Code (2006). Tom Hanks is also an actor who received one of the largest fees in cinema history (just over $51 million for the role of Professor Robert Langdon in the film “Angels and Demons”), only Johnny Depp ($56.5 million for the role of Jack) received more than him Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides). Thomas Jeffrey Hanks was born on July 9, 1956 (19560709) in Concord, California. His father was a chef at a local restaurant, and his mother worked there as a waitress. Tommy was the third child in the family. Five years after his birth, the Hanks divorced, and according to American law, three children (Tom, Larry and Sandra) were taken away by their father. Already in his youth, Tom Hanks showed extraordinary acting abilities and the ability to win over others with his inimitable sense of humor. Entering the University of California was a completely logical step for him. Tom Hanks, however, left his studies as soon as he received an offer to join a small acting group performing in Cleveland. Tom Hanks began acting in films in 1980. (“He knows how lonely you are.”) But his true “discovery” took place only four years later, when the romantic comedy “Splash” was released. One of the most beautiful blondes in Hollywood, Daryl Hannah, played the role of a mermaid who accidentally swam into a huge city. At that time, still boyishly fragile and curly-haired, Tom Hanks played a salesman who fell in love with a strange stranger. In the finale, the lovers sailed into the ocean, away from the soulless, cold world. Hanks began to be filmed frequently (“Bachelor Party”, “The Man in One Red Shoe”, “Volunteers”, “Every Time We Say Goodbye Forever”, “Nothing in Common”, “Network of Evil”). However, four years passed before Tom Hanks made people talk about himself again. This happened in connection with the film “Big,” in which he played a hero with the body of a man and the mind of a child. The unusual plot allowed the actor to demonstrate the gentle humor and warmth that are inseparable from his creative personality. The film “Turner and Hooch” also had considerable success, where his partner was a wonderful dog. Although Tom Hanks starred in more than ten films in the 1980s, his most successful roles date back to the 1990s. A series of creative victories began with the film Sleepless in Seattle (1993), where the actor played a single father who, under the influence of his young son, finds new love. Romanticism, sincerity, sensitivity, a penchant for reflection - these are the traits that made up the individuality of his hero. However, the film “A League of Their Own” showed a completely different side of his talent. Tom Hanks was simply irresistible as the rude, always drunk coach, who protests with all his being against the need to coach a women's baseball team. Tom Hanks' performance in the film Philadelphia (1993), in which he played a gay man dying of AIDS, was unexpected. When his emaciated hero, exhausted by illness, wanders around the room, chained to a metal stand on which a vessel with blood is fixed, he looks like a shadow. Critics wrote with delight that Hanks seemed to repeat the acting feat of Robert De Niro, when, for the sake of convincing the character he was creating, he lost 10 kilograms. This role earned him an Oscar. But the main triumph awaited him ahead. The film Forrest Gump, in which Tom Hanks played the main role, became a real sensation in 1994. His hero is a simple-minded fellow, accustomed from childhood to the ridicule of others. It is enough to look at Gump's face with an expression of dull concentration frozen on it to understand why he is called the “local fool.” And yet, Forrest Gump managed to endure all the trials that befell him with dignity and calm. With obvious signs of mental retardation since childhood, he became an outstanding ping pong player and winner of the world championship held in China, a hero of the Vietnam War, a millionaire, and a role model. The film touches on the subtle feeling of unrequited love. The film received six Oscars. Having received two Oscars in a row, Hanks turned into a national hero. The release of the film Apollo 13, dedicated to the unsuccessful flight to the Moon in 1970, was eagerly awaited. In 1996, Tom Hanks made his film debut as a director, filming in a distinctly documentary style the story of a youth ensemble that broke up after their first hit. “That Thing You Do” was not a big revelation, although it earned favorable reviews from critics. Hanks was married to American actress Samantha Lewis from 1978 to 1987. They had two children: son Colin (also an actor) and daughter Elizabeth Ann. In 1988, Tom Hanks married actress Rita Wilson. The couple met on the set of episodes of the show Bosom Buddies, but their relationship became closer and developed into a romantic one only a few years later on the set of the film Volunteers. They have two sons - Chester and Truman. On February 1, 2011, Tom Hanks became a grandfather: his son Colin and his wife Samantha had a daughter, Olivia.
