Actor Anatoly Gushchin, who became famous after the series about the adventures of the Red Army soldier Chonkin, spoke to Channel Five about working with Merzlikin, Russian cinema, relationships with children and the fight against alcoholism. The series “ The Adventures of Soldier Ivan Chonkin
” turned Anatoly Gushchin into a character actor.
The whole country knew the brave Red Army soldier in his performance. And now he is already playing the role of Alexei Leonov in the film “Gagarin. The first in space." And on the wrong side of screen success - alcohol, fights, arrests. In an interview with Channel 5, the actor spoke about how he struggled with alcohol addiction, how his relationship with his own son and stepson developed, and, most importantly, about his new roles. As the star of the film “Smersh” admits. A Legend for a Traitor”, now he plays “anti-heroes” - the age is appropriate.
“It’s more interesting to play a scoundrel”
In 2019, the film “Roller Coaster” will be released, which tells the story of the post-war period.
In it, the actor will appear in a new role - Gushchin played the role of a “nasty NKVD officer.” In an interview with Channel 5, the artist said that it is more interesting to play anti-heroes, because they reveal the actor. They started offering him roles of scoundrels only recently, and there seems to be a reason for this - age. “As I grew older, they began to offer me scoundrels and scum very often. It is very interesting for an artist to play such characters, because playing positive, pleasant people is, of course, good. But to play a scoundrel who twists and sets nets... For the “actor’s kitchen” this, of course, is more interesting. You, as the person playing this character, need to justify it. Why does he do this? Otherwise he cannot be played.
This year, the film “We Won’t Say Goodbye” was released, in which Gushchin played together with Andrei Merzlikin. Gushchin is an anti-hero. And the fact that the image was a success, the actor believes, is proved by the reaction of the audience. When, at the pre-premiere screening, Merzlikin’s hero, Major Sysoev, killed Vaska Tyapov, the audience applauded.
— I refuse some characters. I refused several times from completely vile scoundrels. He said it was impossible to play it. These are my moral and ethical things. I, as a person who believes in God, simply cannot play such things. This is my position. But at the same time, the character I played in the film “We Won’t Say Goodbye” is a traitor. He killed the boy. But he was fun to play.
Now I have played a character in a film who blames God for all his troubles. As a believer, it was interesting for me to play a character who at some point lost his son. The son went to war. The hero himself returned from the front, and it turned out that his son did not make it to the front. Died on the train. The wife sleeps with the boss - he knows it. And the person eventually comes to the point where he begins to kill all those responsible. He lets the devil into his heart and soul. It’s interesting to play such a character - to understand what motivates him. Reveal it. This renunciation of God is a very serious thing.
GUSCHIN Anatoly AlexandrovichBorn 30.11.1976, Novocheboksarsk
Originally from Chuvashia
Anatoly Gushchin was born and raised in Chuvashia in an international family: his father is Russian, and his mother is Chuvash. This was the second marriage for both parents. My father had three children in his first marriage, and my mother had two.
Anatoly’s family was the most ordinary, far from the world of art. His father worked as a mechanic, and his mother worked as a barmaid and dishwasher. Therefore, Anatoly’s relatives accepted Anatoly’s decision after graduating from school to go to Moscow to enroll in a theater university with a great deal of skepticism. However, he turned out to be a persistent guy and achieved his goal - he entered the M. S. Shchepkin Higher Theater School the first time.
Scene
Anatoly Gushchin had the opportunity to study on the course of the Honored Artist of the RSFSR Nikolai Vereshchenko. His classmates were: Egor Beroev, Ilya Drevnov, Maria Skosareva.
In 1998, Anatoly graduated from the Theater School. Shchepkin and was accepted into the troupe of the “Commonwealth of Taganka Actors” theater, which was directed by Nikolai Gubenko. In 1999, the theater produced the play “Afghan”, in which Gushchin played a large role.
After two years of work in the “Commonwealth of Taganka Actors,” Anatoly Gushchin decided to leave the theater and go into free swimming. He took part in the productions of Anatoly Voropaev’s Production Company “Chonkin” and “Rounders”.
Movie
On May 6, 2002, the premiere of the military drama “Star” directed by Nikolai Lebedev, based on the story of the same name by Em, took place. Kazakevich. The fascinating film about a raid by a group of scouts behind enemy lines to complete an important mission was highly praised by both critics (collecting a whole bunch of prizes) and numerous viewers. One of the main roles - intelligence officer, Private Bykov - was played by Anatoly Gushchin in this film.
The role in the film “Star” was an excellent start in the cinematic career of Anatoly Gushchin. Subsequently, the actor more than once had to appear on screen in uniform - either in military-historical or crime films. This is senior police lieutenant Sergei Latyshev in the detective story “The Ashes of the Phoenix”, and intelligence officer Prokhor in the military drama “On a Nameless Height”, and investigator Semik in the detective series “Calling”, and police captain Dmitry Bubentsov in the ironic detective story “Gorynych and Victoria”, and many others.
Anatoly Gushchin’s greatest fame came from the serial film “The Adventures of Soldier Ivan Chonkin,” directed by Alexei Kiryushchenko based on the famous novel by Vladimir Voinovich in 2007. The actor brilliantly played the main role, conveying the irony and folklore of this work. His Chonkin is a simple village guy who ended up in the army. He looks ridiculous and awkward, a kind of Ivanushka the Fool. However, in fairy tales, it is Ivan the Fool who emerges victorious, since he is the bearer of folk morality and wisdom. So Chonkin famously deals with all the problems that arise...
Anatoly Gushchin created a number of memorable images on screen in subsequent years: Mikha Vorsisty in the action-packed series “The Witch Doctor” (2008), Sergei Pichugov in the military drama “Riorita” (2008), Leonid Lomakin in the crime series “The Court” (2009), Ivan Mokhov in the biographical film “The Life and Adventures of Mishka Yaponchik” (2011), MGB officer Yegor Kozlov in the historical drama “Comrade Stalin” (2011), counterintelligence officer Alexey Kravtsov in the military drama “SMERSH. A Legend for a Traitor" (2011), operative Vasya Permyak in the action-packed series "MosGaz" (2012). And in the historical and biographical series “Son of the Father of Nations” (2013), telling about the life of Vasily Stalin, the hero of the actor was a military pilot whose name and surname completely coincided with his own - Anatoly Gushchin.
Personal life
Anatoly Gushchin met Elena Sheshetina, who became his first wife, in the mid-90s. He studied at the theater school, and Elena, who had nothing to do with the theater, came to visit friends. In 1996 they got married, and the wedding took place in Anatoly’s homeland.
Having entered the “Commonwealth of Taganka Actors” theater after graduating from a theater university, Anatoly Gushchin got his wife there as well. There she began working as a barmaid. Soon the couple had a son, Daniel.
After his divorce from Elena Sheshetina, Anatoly Gushchin lived for some time in a civil marriage with actress from the Sphere theater Victoria Zakharova. He raised her son Yegor (the boy was left without a father after he died). Despite the fact that they also broke up with Victoria, he maintained warm friendly relations with Yegor.

Meeting with the Highlander who chopped off heads
The actor has not watched TV for two years.
By his own admission, a computer replaces his phone with social networks. Of the latest series, Gushchin really liked “Sherlock Holmes”. The star of the film “Murka” recalled a funny incident: in his youth he watched the TV series “Highlander” about the immortal Duncan MacLeod with Adrian Paul, and recently starred with him in the same film. — There was a foreign TV series that I watched. It was Highlander with Adrian Paul. And this summer I starred in a film with him. This is what happened. “Wild League” is about football in the early 20th century. The film has not yet been released. I have a small role there, but I took part in such a film. And then every evening I went to the screen to watch the Highlander chop off heads. We had good contact. He is an excellent professional. I am not fluent in English, we communicated with the help of translators.
The actor also noted that in Russia there is an extremely biased attitude towards TV series filmed here.
— In America and England there are also low-level TV series. Some full-length films cannot be watched by a more or less well-mannered person. Sometimes there is a boundary between good and evil. Yes, special effects, fantastic, but utter nonsense. <…> Unfortunately, there is imitation, yes. Because it's rental. Do you know who owns the rental car in Russia? Who owns cinemas in Russia? What are the largest cinemas called? All are run by American film production, as far as I know. And the timing of Russian theatrical films is also dictated from there. If you can make a film of two hours and 5-7 minutes, then they set a limit of one and a half hours. And it turns out that it is mounted in such a way that everything is unclear. The film loses a lot in post-production. It's my personal opinion.

Modern cinema is not in decline
At the same time, the actor insists that one cannot talk about the low level of domestic cinema.
What is happening now is partly copying technical elements from the West. For example, graphics. But Russian cinema will still show itself. — Now is the period of Russian cinema. Every art has such a period. We are in development. I watch how cameramen shoot, how directors began to shoot. They search, they try. They are trying to film it in a modern way. Young, very interesting cameramen and directors. Cinema is evolving. The fact that something didn’t fire is not iconic—maybe it’s a problem, maybe it’s not a problem. Art develops - there are ups and downs. And there is timelessness.
There are wonderful TV series and films. I cannot say that we are in decline. We have very good films coming out with the Russian mentality, with their own twist. Of course, we take a lot from the Americans. But what can we do - technology is growing.
Now it's clip thinking. If in the Soviet years the director was not afraid to film the scene in one shot, where the artist comes out and plays. I remember a wonderful scene by Oleg Borisov, where he was in the frame for 5-7 minutes. The actor lives in this, exists. The director is not afraid of this. And it’s immediately obvious that the actors were rehearsing. I can immediately see that before the camera was turned on, a lot of work was done by the actor and director. This is a very important thing if they have worked.
Biography
Oleg Gushchin was born on August 17, 1957 in Riga, Latvia.
He grew up in a large family, his grandmother had ten children. As a child, Oleg was known as a bully and was kicked out of school more than once. Before serving in the army, Oleg Gushchin worked first as an apprentice ship repairer, and then as a ship repairer. From 1975 to 1977 he served in the Soviet Army. After the army, in 1978, Oleg attempted to enter GITIS, but did not pass the competition. However, Gushchin did not give up his dream of becoming an actor and in 1979 he went to Moscow again. The second attempt was successful. In 1983, Oleg Gushchin graduated from GITIS (course of I.M. Tumanov and A.V. Efros). The young actor served for one season at the State Theater for Young Spectators of the Latvian SSR, then (1984-1991) at the Sverdlovsk Youth Theater. In 1991 he moved to Moscow, in 1991-1992 he was an actor in the Moscow studio of the Roman Viktyuk Theater. In 1992, Oleg Gushchin was accepted into the troupe of the Moscow Gogol Theater.
Like many actors, Gushchin began his career with small episodes in films. He received his first leading role in 1991 in the film “Without Justice” by Nikolai Koshelev. In the same year, another leading role in the drama “The Cannibal” by Gennady Zemel. In the series “Maroseyka, 12,” beloved by many Russian television viewers, Gushchin received the role of Major Belavin. In this series he had the opportunity to work with Dmitry Kharatyan. One of his most notable works came to him in 2004 with the main role of George in the film “Joker”. Oleg was hired to shoot this film without auditioning. This is one of the few works of the actor with which he was satisfied. The actor says: “I could afford to diversify the role, to show the incredible contradiction of my character’s life. The script is simple, but, as Konstantin Shamin said, it’s a real story.” Gushchin also liked working with Yegor Konchalovsky; the director cast him in the film “Roses for Elsa.” The actor admitted that he immediately found a common language with the director. He also played one of the main roles in the drama “The Fourth Group” by Alexander Kopeikin.
The actor has been fond of football since childhood and plays for the team of the Guild of Theater and Film Actors. His interests also include hockey and roller skating.
"Dough period"
Gushchin is painfully worried about the “unprofitability of cinema from distribution.”
The artist believes that when a film “breaks even”, this is already a victory for the producer. In fact, this means that the next stage—showing on television—will bring in revenue. At the same time, Gushchin does not watch foreign TV series, which for the most part are aimed at “earning money.” “I could tell you my opinion if I was watching.” They tell me that there are a lot of good American TV series coming out. I watched a lot in my time. I think Sherlock Holmes is a good series. On Channel 5 I watched a wonderful foreign series on Shakespeare. We filmed 6 or 8 episodes, but you can’t take your eyes off it!
The modern world is geared towards making money. If a tailor used to sew a suit, the client’s grandchildren would wear it. If a car was made before the 2000s, then it was reliable. The current period, in general, as a stage of human development, is based on money. Loot in the eyes!
Favorite Director
The actor actively works with director Vladimir Nakhabtsev.
This creative duo produced four series: “Scythian Gold”, “Department”, “I Am Angelina” and “Bailiffs”. Gushchin also appreciates his work with the cult director Pyotr Todorovsky - in 2008 he starred in the master’s film “Riorita”. The film became the director's last film. - Today I have a director who is very interesting to me in my work. I’m interested in working with him - this is Volodya Nakhabtsev. There is complete trust. Somehow something happened that we absolutely agreed. I will say that there was great work with Todorovsky. She will be remembered, will remain in my heart, in my memory. I starred with a great director. I saw how a great director works.
Today my directors are Volodya Nakhabtsev and Ira Gedrovich, with whom we worked on the four-part film “Comrade Stalin” and the film “Smersh. A legend for a traitor." And now the film on NTV has ended, in which she gave me a small “role” of the policeman Kotik. Ira Gedrovich is a subtle, very precise, very sensitive, deeply immersed in the material, very detailed approach to the characters, to the props, to everything, a director sensitive to the era. These are very important things.
Artist biography
Anatoly Alexandrovich was born on November 30, 1976 in the city of Novocheboksarsk, Chuvash Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. The boy’s mother was Chuvash, and his father was Russian. He graduated from school No. 10 in his hometown and moved to Moscow, where he entered the Higher Theater School named after. Shchepkina. He completed his studies in 1998 and was invited to work at the Taganka Actors' Commonwealth theater under the direction of Nikolai Gubenko.

Actor of one role?
The viewer is accustomed to seeing Gushchin in the role of “Ivan Chonkin.”
The “Red Army man” himself denies this - they say he is not an actor of one role, it was just the time. However, it was the series “The Adventures of Soldier Ivan Chonkin” that added fans to the Russian actor. This landmark work began in the theater, when director Alexey Kiryushchenko proposed staging a play about a gallant soldier of the Soviet army. — I am grateful to the Lord for the character of Chonkin, grateful to Lesha Kiryushchenko, and to the director for inviting me to play this character in a play in 2001, and then in 2006 in a movie. Other artists were considered, but in the end they invited me, for which I am very grateful to Alexey Kiryushchenko. This is for an actor of my type - apparently, for that period of time when I was younger, this was my character. Now I have moved to another age category. And therefore other characters.
First roles
From the biography of Anatoly Gushchin it follows that in 2001 he first appeared on the set. A graduate of the Shchepkinsky School made his debut in the TV series “Truckers.” Of course, he got a minor role, but a start was made. The aspiring artist’s colleagues on the set included celebrities such as Vladimir Gostyukhin, Vladislav Galkin, and Natalya Egorova.
In 2002, director Nikolai Lebedev approved Anatoly for one of the key roles in the military drama “Star”. The artist’s character was the brave intelligence officer Bykov. The hero was thrown behind enemy lines to carry out an important task.
Children of Gushchin. Friend or foe
The actor has a rather complicated relationship with his son Daniil, a child born in marriage to Elena Sheshetina.
Gushchin met a girl while still a student at Shchepka. He came to visit friends. But the marriage was short-lived - the couple divorced four years later. Today the actor regrets that he took so little part in the fate of his son. Daniil is already 21, he is studying to become an IT specialist, and the relationship between father and son is now open and frank. — Life turned out so that I took little part in raising my son. When he was four, my wife and I separated. We didn't part on very good terms. Of course, I came. Once a week, once a month. But, you understand that the boy wants his father to be nearby all the time. Now he has grown up, he has his own grievances about it. He wanted his father to be nearby. But I wasn't there. I can't boast about my paternity. The boy is withdrawn, all to himself. He didn't have enough love. Mine. Mother, of course, gave love. But I know that my love was not enough for him. He was very worried about this. And he’s still worried. Recently he told me that he would not wish anyone to live without a father. I wanted my dad to be nearby.
Gushchin admitted that he was very glad that his son did not follow in his footsteps and did not become an actor. Creative professions are extremely difficult.
“This is a difficult human test. It doesn’t work out for many artists. Many people work in the theater, if they work. It happens that they go into other professions, and then, having pushed around, after 30 it turns out that they did not succeed either in the theater or in the cinema. Not everyone wants to start learning again. I am glad that Daniil chose the profession of an IT specialist.
Now the actor is married to actress Victoria Zakharova. Last October they had a daughter, the baby was named Glafira. She just recently started walking. At the same time, the relationship in the couple is also difficult - the spouses separated, then converged. Gushchin is raising Victoria’s son from her first marriage, Yegor. Ngo’s biological father is the actor of the Sphere theater Alexander Tochilnikov, he is no longer alive. Now Egor is 19 years old, he is studying at the customs academy. Gushchin is very proud of his sons, calling them real and decent young people.
- I took part in his upbringing - this is what any man should do if he lives with a woman who has a child. I don't see any heroic action here. We began to coexist with Victoria, and I told her: “It’s not good, Vic, we live here and are crazy, and Egor is in Omsk with his grandparents. I think it will be cool if he lives with you, you will see how he grows up. Why do I need to get from Yekaterinburg to Omsk in 12 hours?” We flew in, and on his birthday we were in Moscow, and celebrated his fourth anniversary in Moscow. From the age of four he began to live with Vika.
Our relationship is going very well, he respects me. He doesn’t call me father—we agreed from the very beginning. He can call, but he’s apparently not ready yet. When I was little, there was a question of what to call me. And Vicky had a question about how to contact me. Tolya... I'm not a dad. Dad died.
Personal life
Anatoly still remembers the name of his first love. He now communicates with Tatyana Isakova, who did not return his feelings then, on social networks.
The actor met his first wife Elena Sheshetina in “Sliver”. The young couple celebrated their wedding according to old Udmurt customs. In this marriage, Anatoly had a son, Daniel. The wife got a job at the Taganka Actors' Commonwealth as a barmaid.

Anatoly Gushchin with mother and daughter
After leaving the theater, Gushchin sat at home for some time without work, raising his child, teaching him to read and write, feeding him and walking with him. After the divorce, Daniil stayed with his mother. Elena soon married an employee of the production department of the same theater and gave birth to two more children.
The actor’s relationship with his first child was not easy. The young man retained his father’s surname, but grew up withdrawn and was very worried that Anatoly rarely visited him. Gushchin himself regrets that, due to intensive filming, he did not pay attention to the guy, but he is proud that “the son is smarter” - he did not go into creativity, but chose IT technology.
The media wrote about Anatoly’s romance with Anna Miklos, with whom he starred in the film “SMERSH”. But colleagues did not comment on the rumors and did not make any official statements. Perhaps they were just spending time together as friends.

Actress Anna Miklos
Gushchin's personal life was changed by a meeting with Victoria Zakharova. The acquaintance took place at the Sphere theater, where both were involved in the play. The lovers began to live together, although the relationship was not officially registered for a long time. Anatoly, on his own initiative, brought Victoria’s son Yegor from Omsk to Moscow.
Alexander Tochilshchikov, the boy’s father and the actress’s first husband, died tragically. Yegor studies at the customs academy and, at the request of his stepfather, calls him exclusively by his first name. So, Gushchin believes, it would be more correct, because there can only be one father.
Anything could happen in the family of Victoria and Anatoly. The couple separated, then got back together and scattered again. The actor admits that he is not a “handsome man” (the man’s height is 173 cm), and he gave no reason for jealousy. In the end, in May 2016, Zakharova and Gushchin went to the registry office, and shortly before the appearance of their daughter Glafira, they got married.

Faith in God helped the artist overcome his craving for alcohol. He has a history of fighting with police officers in 2001 and being taken to the police station in 2014.
