Gemma Christina Arterton was born into a poor English family. Her mother made a living cleaning buildings and houses, and her father was a welder.

When Gemma was born on February 2, 1986, doctors were surprised to note that the newborn had six fingers and strangely shaped ears. Fortunately for the girl, leading UK surgeons corrected these deficiencies in childhood. The only reminder of the defect is a tattoo behind the ear, under which the actress hides small scars.

At school, Gemma Arterton looked no different from other girls, except that she dressed poorly because she didn’t have enough money for anything. She was not interested in studying, but she enjoyed attending acting classes at school.

Personal life of Gemma Arterton

The charming, easy-going young actress has been surrounded by crowds of admiring fans from the very beginning of her brilliant career, but Gemma simply never had the time or patience for a long-term serious relationship. Among her light hobbies was a certain animator John Nolan, with whom Arterton broke up after a year of marriage. Then, on the set of Quantum of Solace, fate brought the girl together with Daniel Craig's stunt double, whose name remained unknown to the general public. And this romance was short-lived. While working on Prince of Persia, the actress met Eduardo Muñoz, a riding coach whom she soon ruthlessly abandoned. Having experienced several short, non-committal novels, the actress, it would seem, has met her fate and is about to settle down. In June 2010, a secret wedding took place in Andalusia, Spain, between Gemma Arterton and Stefano Catelli, a modest sales manager. However, the couple recently broke up...

Star Trek

Arterton received her first role immediately after graduating from the academy in 2007. She took part in the filming of the television film "Conquest of Mary". In the same year, she made her theatrical debut on the stage of the famous Globe Theater in Shakespeare's play Love's Labour's Lost. Then actress Gemma Arterton appeared in two more or less successful comedies at once: “Classmates” and “Three to Go.” The actress’s true finest hour came in 2008, when the next James Bond film “Quantum of Solace” was released. Having played a character named Strawberry Fields, Arterton received not only the long-awaited popularity, but also the opportunity to become the face of the Bond Girl 007 perfume from Avon. It is known that at the casting Gemma was ahead of 1,500 actresses who applied for this role. Participation in the Bond film played a positive role in the development of the actress’s career, and in 2008, Gemma was invited by Guy Ritchie himself to star in the film “Rock and Roller”. The actress's last most significant roles were the films "Clash of the Titans" and "Prince of Persia", both released in 2010. By the way, Gemma Arterton is 170 cm tall.

Gemma Arterton on style and love in the film “Vita and Virginia”

The Englishwoman Gemma Arterton is no brother: she has a risky romance in the movies, and makes a revolution on the red carpet. “A diplomat’s wife and a successful novelist, or an insatiable lover, famous for her affairs and making her poor husband suffer - which one do you want to remain in history?” - aristocrat Vita Sackville-West is asked in the film “Vita and Virginia,” which is released on June 6. The star of modernist London does not give an answer. “It’s surprising that in the end, here in England, she is known as the landscape designer who created the amazing Sissinghurst garden, and we’ve also heard something about her bad reputation,” says actress Gemma Arterton about her heroine. In fact, the modern generation doesn’t know much about the one for whom Vita is ready to sacrifice her reputation—the writer Virginia Woolf (played by Elizabeth Debicki), except perhaps about her suicide—thanks to the movie “The Hours.”

Gemma Arterton as Vita Sackville-West in Vita and Virginia

“We all wanted this film to have a youthful feel to it, so that it would be understandable and interesting to young people,” says 33-year-old Gemma. “It seems to me that director Chania Button succeeded in this, primarily thanks to modern editing and a soundtrack that is unusual for costume cinema, but ideally suits the heroines, fearlessly going beyond the boundaries defined for them by the era.”

The daughter of working-class people from Kent, Arterton rose to fame immediately after graduating from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, playing James Bond's girlfriend in Quantum of Solace. She fell in with sexy Hollywood starlets, starred in Prince of Persia and Clash of the Titans, rebelled and ran away to a European arthouse. Since then, he has been choosing heroines who stand out from the generally accepted ideas. Flaubert's modern heroine in The Other Bovary. In the melodrama “Their Finest Hour,” the screenwriter, who during World War II was called to write “snot”—female dialogue in patriotic British cinema—and she manages to bring her heroines to the fore. Or a prosperous mother and wife who is so sick of the simple joys of family that she takes a one-way ticket to Paris in the drama “Escape.” This film, like Vita and Virginia, was also produced by Arterton herself. Taking your career into your own hands rather than sitting around waiting for a good script is the “new black” for aspiring actresses.

Speaking of black. Off the set, Gemma is no less determined. In the winter of 2018, Arterton personally called the British cinema, convincing them to abandon the prepared dresses and come to the BAFTA ceremony in black to draw attention to the #MeToo movement. She convinced everyone and shone in a pleated Alberta Ferretti dress. And then she wrote a column for British Vogue about how important it is to go to women’s marches.

“Glamour for the red carpet, English practicality for every day: trench coats, flared jeans, boots - this is the fashion credo of Arterton, who has recently been close friends with Dior. — I like Vita’s approach to clothing: wear men’s jackets and riding breeches or flowy dresses depending on her mood. But the main thing, of course, is to feel good in any dress, even couture. Otherwise it will not decorate you. I like my hair and makeup to be as natural as possible. But earrings for going out can be massive. If I have a chance to wear emeralds, I will do it.”

“Vita and Virginia”, “Colette”, “The Favorite”, “Two Queens” - this year films about women who will give men a head start are coming out one after another, and Gemma triumphs: “Our film is based on a play that was staged in theater more than twenty years ago. The script was also written a long time ago, but only now money became available for filming. In my opinion, it was the same story with The Favorite, and a couple of years ago it would have remained an arthouse for a couple of viewers. It seems to me that the main thing that has changed is the people. Audiences have developed an appetite for ambiguous, complex stories - maybe they're tired of endless superheroes? Or have Netflix and other video services, with their huge selection of topics, plots, and formats, developed the taste of viewers and made them more open to everything new?” In any case, there is a reason to drink champagne.
