Mikhail Zhigalov: I did not immediately recognize my illegitimate son

Childhood and family of Mikhail Zhigalov

The city in which Mikhail was born was Kuibyshev (Samara).
This is not his hometown, it’s just that his mother was evacuated there. When the war ended, they returned to the capital. The boy's father was a State Security employee who was sent to Czechoslovakia for several years after the war. Returning from this country, Zhigalov went to school. He had to get used to new relationships both at school and in the yard. In those years, the courtyard had a considerable influence on the formation of children.

Misha has a sister. He remembers that he was never close to his father. My sister developed a closer relationship with him.

Mikhail Zhigalov: family, childhood

The actor was born in Kuibyshev, later this city was renamed Samara. This event took place in May 1942. Mikhail Zhigalov was born into the family of a state security officer; there are no cinema stars among his relatives. The artist has a younger sister with whom he has a close relationship.

Mikhail Zhigalov

After the end of the war, the Zhigalov family lived in Czechoslovakia for about three years, then moved to Moscow. The first months in the capital turned out to be a real test for Mikhail; it was difficult for him to get used to Russian realities and find a common language with his peers. Gradually the situation returned to normal, the boy made friends and began to spend a lot of time on the street.

At school, Mikhail Zhigalov studied well, his favorite subjects were mathematics and history. For some time he even thought about entering the history department, but his father opposed this decision. Zhigalov Sr. dreamed of seeing his heir as an engineer or agronomist. During his school years, the boy was also interested in dramatic art, participated in amateur productions and studied in a theater studio, but then did not seriously think about the acting profession.

The first profession of Mikhail Zhigalov

When the time came to choose an institute, at the insistence of his father, Zhigalov chose the Institute of Chemical Engineering, although he entered only on the second attempt. Having successfully completed his studies, the young man began working at a research institute. Mikhail turned out to be a talented chemist, his career was on the rise, and soon he was already heading the department. He was even offered a ten-month business trip to England, which he refused.

Zhigalov carried a love for theater in his soul since childhood, but he began to think seriously about the stage only when he was already working at a research institute. At some point, he decided to start living a different life and doing what he wanted, namely, playing on stage. He left the research institute and began studying at the theater studio located at the children's theater.

School and Institute

After the war, the father of the future actor was sent to Czechoslovakia along with his wife and little son. After the family returned to their homeland, Mikhail entered school, but it was not easy for him to adapt there after living abroad. In the post-war period, children were raised more by the street than by the family.

After receiving secondary education, at the insistence of his father, Mikhail entered the Institute of Chemical Engineering. At the university he met his first wife. After graduation, he worked at a research institute for several years. He had an extraordinary talent for chemistry, and after a while he became the head of the department.

Profession of actor Mikhail Zhigalov

Having received the desired profession, the aspiring actor remained at the Central Children's Theater. He appeared on its stage for eight years. Only in 1978 did Mikhail move to the Sovremennik Theater. In this theater he successfully played many roles in about thirty productions.

His most successful performances are “The Scaffold”, “The Cabal of the Saints”, “Bolsheviks”, “Three Sisters”, “Days of the Turbins”, etc.

Theater

But Mikhail dreamed more of working in the theater. He decided to change his profession, already working at a research institute. Having completely changed his life, the future actor leaves the profession of a chemist and begins to study theatrical art in a children's theater. But, unfortunately, his wife does not share the love of creativity and leaves him.

For eight years, Mikhail Zhigalov has been playing in the children's theater. In 1978, the actor entered Sovremennik. Mikhail had more than thirty successful roles in productions. His most successful roles were in the plays “Three Sisters”, “Bolsheviks”, “Days of the Turbins” and many others.

Filmography of Mikhail Zhigalov

Since 1972, Mikhail has been acting in films. The debut film is “The Very Last Day”. No matter what films Zhigalov starred in, he always believed that the main thing for him was the theater stage, despite the fact that the theater always paid very little, and filming “fed” the actor.

Unfortunately, not taking the choice of roles and scripts too seriously, Zhigalov did not notice that he had turned into an actor of one role. More often he appeared on the screen in the role of a drunkard, a thief in law or another negative character. In the end, it turned out that Mikhail could not play a positive role in any film, literally becoming a hostage to his role. He realized that he had made a mistake when he did not take the choice of roles and scripts seriously.

In the film “The Kidnapping of Savoy,” Mikhail got the role of the terrorist Mangus, in “Petrovka, 38” he created the image of a criminal nicknamed “Sir,” and in the movie “Find and Defuse” the actor played the leader of a gang. The last film also starred Boris Nevzorov, Nina Ruslanova, Andrei Gradov and other actors. There are many such examples. Thanks to this, many directors saw Zhigalov exclusively as a negative hero. They could not imagine that the captain of the Soviet Army would be played by someone whom everyone knows as an inveterate criminal or a drunk.

Film career

In 1972, Mikhail Zhigalov appeared on the set for the first time. The actor’s filmography began with the drama “The Very Last Day.” In this film he played the cameo role of a police lieutenant. “For the rest of my life”, “The Vacation That Never Took Place”, “On Thursday and Never Again”, “I Want to Be a Minister”, “The Stealing of the Savoy”, “A Month of Long Days” are the first films and TV series with his participation.

In the eighties, Mikhail continued to actively act in films, playing mostly episodic and supporting roles. Most often, his characters were people in uniform, criminals, and alcoholics. Zhigalov was not embarrassed by the fact that he had a unique role, since he perceived filming only as a source of additional income, and only took theatrical roles seriously. “Petrovka, 38”, “Deer Hunt”, “Vladivostok, 1918”, “Find and neutralize”, “From the life of the head of the criminal investigation department”, “Proceed with liquidation”, “Defendant”, “Wingspan”, “Dogs” , “Mayhem” are just some of the films with his participation.

New films with Mikhail Zhigalov

The actor seriously thought about how he could change the nature of the images he created and presented. Mikhail was saved by his invitation to the film about Pushkin, which was directed by Marlen Khutsiev. Zhigalov played Vyazemsky. This filming, much to Mikhail’s regret, was stopped. But this did not prevent almost all directors from changing their opinion about the actor Zhigalov and his capabilities in the frame. He started getting interesting roles.
