“Method” in action: real stories of maniacs from the Russian TV series

The psychological series “Method,” which was an incredible success on Channel One, about a maniacal investigator, was remembered by viewers as one of the most unusual projects. The series, released once a week, attracted the attention of hundreds of thousands of Russians, who were eagerly awaiting the actions of the protagonist, who followed the letter of the law, while personally dealing with criminals and not taking public morality into account.

Watching investigator Meglin, brilliantly performed by K. Khabensky, was incredibly interesting also because the script of the series was based on real stories telling about the atrocities of maniacs.

The brightest film premiere

The series “Method”, which has become a favorite for many viewers, reviews of which are extremely contradictory, was recognized as the brightest film premiere of 2015. Many critics openly admitted that before the release of the multi-part film, all previously made films could be considered average. Numerous TV series that filled the broadcast network and were filmed “at one time” became boring to viewers who were eager to see something that would make them look for a secret meaning.

Venerable reviewers highly praised the original series. And some said that it is not a shame to boast about a masterpiece with an unusual plot and amazing acting at the world level, and now Russia can show its foreign colleagues a worthy product.

A unique project for Russian television

Reviews of the series “Method”, in which the main character Yesenya Steklova gets a job as an intern for an investigator who solves the most mysterious crimes, cannot be unambiguous. There was immediate excitement around the new project, fueled by statements by A. Tsekalo (film producer) that it would be a unique detective experiment for Russian television, unformatted and scary. The created work, revealing the dark sides of the criminal’s soul, reminds everyone of the inevitability of retribution. It is impossible not to note the brilliant script, the excellent work of the director and the phenomenal performance of the actors involved. All this brought the detective series “Method” to a new level.

Reviews, testimonials, actors

Khabensky, playing Meglin with strange behavior and a special flair for maniacs, conveyed the character of his hero so reliably that people believe him from the first frame. The best modern actor of our cinema got used to the role of a man who discovered pathological tendencies in himself, but throughout his life he kept them deep within himself.

TV series "Method" reviews from critics

Having decided to turn to psychologists, he saved himself from a criminal future, becoming a true professional in his field. The well-filmed “Method” (TV series) is about such an unusual hero, who perfectly understands maniacs who have crossed the line. Reviews of the film are replete with comparisons between Meglin and Dexter - a sociopath with a growing thirst for murder, destroying only real criminals who escaped punishment.

Other actors

Who else was remembered by the audience in the series “Method”? Descriptions and reviews of the characters in the film in 99% of cases talk specifically about the main characters - Rodion and Yesenia. Although the supporting actors were very, very good:

  1. Makar Zaporozhsky played Sasha, Yesenia’s classmate, who has long been unrequitedly in love with her. He does not give up trying to get closer to her, he is also trying to get an internship with Meglin, and is conducting his own parallel investigation of one of the cases.
  2. Vitaly Kishchenko played Yesenia's dad. Andrei Steklov is no less complex and interesting character than Meglin. They have common secrets with the main character, he hides the truth about the death of his wife from his daughter, and thanks to his high position in the procurator, he can and does commit a number of actions that should protect his child from Rodion’s influence.
  3. Alexander Petrov as the classic “bad guy” Zhenya, Steklova’s classmate. A bright and charismatic character.
  4. Alexey Serebryakov, in the series Strelok. Meglin's main opponent.
  5. Sergei Sosnovsky, in the film Vadim Bergich, psychiatrist, Rodion’s attending physician.

The audience also remembered Yan Tsapnik and Alexander Tsekalo in the roles of maniacs – Taxi Driver and Volodenka.

The main star of the series

Critics consider the series “Method”, filmed with unusual gloom, to be a bold step in cinema. Reviews of the film confirm that the brilliant Khabensky is the main star of the detective story, without whom the film would not have worked. A mentally unstable investigator, who does not tell anyone about his method of work, looks for reasons in the crime that made a person a serial maniac. Each episode introduces a new criminal, and Meglin tries to answer the eternal question, “Who is to blame?”

He knows much more about this world than others, and easily deciphers the secret signs that serial killers leave, since only he can understand their logic. The actor said that the story that was released on the screens is too far from other “combed” films telling about the everyday life of investigators. And finding justification for this cruelty is incredibly difficult. He compared his Meglin to an animal released to hunt.

Negative reviews

After the release of the last episodes of the series “Method”, which frightens viewers, reviews from critics poured in in huge numbers. These were not only laudatory reviews, but also quite harsh statements about the director and actors of the psychological thriller. Some thought that Meglin looked like a real superhero and compared him to characters from famous American comics. Allegedly, he is always dressed the same, does not report even to his superiors in his actions, disappears whenever he wants, and the interiors of his room resemble the scenery of American action films.

A gloomy loner who takes pills and washes them down with cognac has difficulty staying on the line between good and evil. Endowed with enormous powers, he lives without fear and reproach, doing his job, which sets him apart from other colleagues.

Critics note that viewers cannot escape the feeling of some kind of experiment that Channel One is conducting on its viewers, omitting, for the sake of this, important details in the characters’ characters. If the director had structured the narrative outline a little differently, the portraits of Meglin and Yesenia would have looked much more lively and deeper.

Counselor-Ripper

The anti-hero of the fourth series was the leader of the children's travel club, whose members were mainly children from disadvantaged families. Having become a victim of his own uncle in early childhood, the counselor suffered from a mental disorder. This honored teacher and informal hero of the city, respected by the administration, when he was a child, was forced to dress in special clothes and “hang himself.” My uncle filmed all this with a camera. At the last moment he pulled the child out of the noose. The maniac survived to continue his uncle's work.

Attractive evil. Why maniacs and murderers become popular

More details

He also hanged boys whom he lured to a “picnic” with him, filmed them, and then tried to “rescue” them. In some cases this was successful, in others it was not. The counselor buried the murdered children there, next to the tree on which he hung them, planting a tree on the grave of each child. There were survivors, but they did not dare talk about their “picnic.”

This story in the series has become the closest to the truth so far. It almost completely tells the story of a maniac named Anatoly Slivko , who created a tourist club in Nevinnomyssk called “CHERGID” - “Through mountains, rivers and valleys.” Boy members of the club became victims of the maniac. He dressed them in white shirts, patent leather shoes, tied pioneer ties and filmed it all. The difference lies only in the reasons that prompted him to do this, the presence of a family of a wife and two children, and the method of destroying the bodies of the dead children.

In fact, Slivko did not have any pervert uncle. There was a pioneer who was killed by a motorcyclist, and at the age of 23, the sight of whose suffering caused the future maniac to experience extreme excitement. For some reason, he dismembered the bodies of the dead and buried them in different places.

Article on the topic

The right to kill. Are psychopathic maniacs corrupted by the law? They could not catch him for 21 years, from 1964 to 1985; all seven missing children were from his club, and some survivors told stories from the "picnic". But no one believed them - the honored teacher of the RSFSR could not be a cruel sadist. The court sentenced Slivko to capital punishment.

Conflicting reviews of Andreeva's performance

Much has been written about the performer of the role of the intern, Paulina Andreeva, who was made famous by the intellectual series “Method”. Feedback and reviews from ordinary viewers and experienced film critics mostly agree.

The girl plays a law school graduate, overcome by a thirst for revenge and trying to find her mother's killer. She has her own scale for assessing people and a youthful idea of justice. The acting performance of the beautiful Paulina is called false, although in fairness it should be noted that the laudatory reviews that placed the actress on a pedestal.

Her emotionlessness is exactly what the director demanded from his ward, and her smooth performance fully corresponded to the role of an intern falling under the charm of her boss. Andreeva captivated fans with her pretty appearance and charisma, and in addition, she perfectly conveyed the transformation from a glamorous lady into a real predator, which speaks of her talent.

TV series for adults

A striking premiere, in which epigraphs symbolize the motive or essence of the criminal, has no analogues in our cinema. Perhaps this is why mixed reviews about the series “Method” (2015) flooded the Internet. No one disputes that the result was a truly worthy product with excellent work by screenwriters, cameramen and sound engineers.

Even negative reviews focus on the psychological impact on viewers, who want to reflect on what they saw after watching it. It was not for nothing that the difficult series, which did not hide the bloody details, was broadcast at such a late hour. Many spoke disapprovingly of the project, saturated with depression and mysticism, noting a general hopelessness. Convincing scenes of violence caused heated discussions about whether death could be shown so reliably or not.

My review of the series “Method Season 2”

A very cool series (I'm talking about the first season). Good work, concept and shooting, as well as actors. Everything is presented very well, especially the acting.

When I watched the first season, I was completely delighted, and watched the series without taking my eyes off it, I was more interested than ever, the series will not let you get bored, there are many interesting moments, intrigue, love and other things. We combined a lot of things.

It’s not like any other series, I don’t know about you, but this is purely my opinion.

I hope the second season doesn't let us down. I’ll continue my review when the first episode comes out and it’s clear whether you can watch it or not. Although the trailer shown was very promising.

The first season is a must watch!

I recommend.

No film will change society

A sensational series that fully justifies its “18+” restriction cannot be called “black stuff.” This is a hyper-realistic scary fairy tale, where each episode is a mystery, which, together with Meglin and his faithful assistant, is unraveled by viewers who have fallen in love with the popular TV series “Method”.

Reviews from critics also assessed our society. The burning topic was touched upon that people are interested in precisely such films - with bloodshed and ruthless killers. And the sympathy of the average person is often on the side of heroes with a dark past and different values. The responses to this attack were multiple statements that the series, in which ambiguous good fights evil, is unlikely to be able to correct modern society, and none of the creators had such a goal.

Interesting facts about the series

  • Despite the fact that the thriller contains a lot of fiction, it shows real stories of maniacs who killed back in the days of the Soviet Union. And as the authors of the psychological project say, the bloodiest details were omitted so as not to plunge the viewer into the abyss of the atrocities that non-humans committed.
  • Each episode took place in a different part of Russia and was filmed there. By the way, the creators of the sensational film called the new parts of the story about a secretive investigator struggling with his demons “sessions.” This is another feature that distinguishes the multifaceted series “Method” from other thrillers.
  • Reviews from film critics about the supporting actors playing maniacs are completely full of delight. The convincing performance of A. Serebryakov, Y. Tsapnik and others opens up to the audience the dark world of the criminal.

Lipetsk Strangler

The first of the identified maniacs appears in the second episode. The heroes go to Lipetsk, where a serial killer operates, strangling his victims - young girls. He kills without fear, without fear of witnesses. As a result, the guy who lost his mother from a serious illness as a child turns out to be a maniac. He also fell ill from grief. Weak physically, he was constantly attacked by his classmates. The bullying of girls was especially cruel. Having matured, the killer went on the warpath and began to strangle those with whom he sat at the same desk as a child.

In reality, the “Lipetsk strangler” was named Anatoly Sedykh . If in the series about ten victims died at his hands, then in real life he killed 12 girls under 28 years old. All murders occurred between 1998 and 2003. It was not possible to catch the maniac then, although he was detained several times. After the murder, he stole valuables from the girls. Some items were found on him during his arrest, but each time investigators could not prove that he was the killer or that he took these things. The killer was arrested only in 2008. Despite his “retirement,” the maniac continued to store the things stolen from the girls in the barn. One day, an acquaintance of his found someone else’s phone and turned it on. Based on the signal, it was possible to determine his location and detain the criminal.

Sedykh received a life sentence, which was announced by the court on the eve of his birthday. The nickname “Lipetsk Chikatilo” stuck to him. He died at the age of 50 - he hanged himself in a colony in 2013.
