Biography of Angelika Varum

Singer Anzhelika Varum (real name Maria) was born in Lviv in the family of composer Yuri Varum and theater director Galina Shapovalova. She has a half-brother, Mikhail (1989).

The surname “Varum” (translated from German as “why”) was taken by Angelica’s great-grandfather while escaping from the Nazis; his real surname is Roebuck.

Since childhood, she was fond of music, played the piano and guitar, and in high school she toured neighboring cities with the school theater.

After school, without entering the theater institute, she began working as a backing vocalist in her father’s studio, and briefly played bass guitar in the group “Combination”.

Varum’s singing career began almost by accident: in 1990, her father invited her to record the song “Midnight Cowboy” in the studio, which immediately became a hit. A year later, the first album “Goodbye, my boy” was released, and Anzhelika Varum became famous thanks to the main song, as well as the single “Whistle Man”.

The stage name “Angelica” did not appear by chance: as a child, her grandmother called her an angel. And when it was time to perform on stage, Varum decided to change the name of the Virgin Mary to Angelica. To her family and friends she remained Masha.

In 1995, the second album “La-la-fa” appeared with the hits “Town” and “The Artist Who Paints the Rain.” Angelika Varum toured with concerts all over the country, and a year later she recorded two new albums at once - “Two Minutes from Love” and “Winter Cherry” (she no longer sings this song after the tragedy in Kemerovo).

In 1997, Varum played in the play “Emigrant Pose”, and in 1999 - in the film “The Sky in Diamonds”. At the same time, the album “Only She” was released, and a year later - the album “Office Romance”, joint with her husband Leonid Agutin. Since then, the couple often perform together.

In 2001, her father invited Anzhelika Varum to become a producer in a new record company.

In 2002 she recorded the album “Stop, Curiosity”, in 2007 - “Music”, in 2009 - “He Will Leave”, in 2013 - “Crazy”, in 2020 - “The Woman Walked” (Anzhelika Varum wrote lyrics for songs from it herself), in 2020 - “On a break.”

In 2011 she became an Honored Artist of the Russian Federation.

Angelika Varum is a multiple winner of the “Song of the Year”, “Golden Gramophone”, and the “Ovation” award.

In April 2020, she became ill at a concert in Ulyanovsk.

Career

Angelika Varum took her first independent steps in music in 1990. Then she already became Angelica. The girl decided to take a pseudonym because she believed that with the name Maria it would be more difficult for her to achieve success on stage. The song with which Varum literally burst into the world of show business is “Midnight Cowboy.” Varum was invited to television, she sang at joint concerts at the Olimpiysky. And in the same 1990, she recorded her first album, “Good Bye, my boy.”

A couple of years later, Angelika Varum performed such hits as “La-la-fam,” “The Artist Who Paints the Rain” and “Town.” And in 1995, her video for the song “Autumn Rain” won the Ovation Award. Another significant event in the singer’s career was the release of her sixth album “Winter Cherry” in 1996. The songs from this disc were on the first lines of all charts.

In 1997, the creative duo Anzhelika Varum - Leonid Agutin was born on the stage. After some time, their daughter Elizabeth was born. But Varum did not want to become a “housewife” and very quickly returned to the stage. In total, during her career, Anzhelika Varum has already released 13 albums with songs. And he is not going to stop there.

“Family is also work. It’s just that for some it’s a favorite, but for others it’s hard labor. The main thing is to learn to solve problems, and not just stomp your foot and say: “I’m leaving.”

Personal life of Angelika Varum

The singer’s first husband was photographer Maxim Nikitin, with whom she went to school together. After eight years of marriage they separated.

The second husband was singer Leonid Agutin: in 2007 they decided to sing a duet, and soon got together. On February 9, 1999, daughter Elizaveta was born, and on July 18, 2000, Agutin and Varum got married in Venice.

Angelica Varum admits that she is jealous of her husband, but will send him to the doctor if he stops “prancing,” that is, paying attention to other women.

Personal life

Varum’s first husband is M. Nikitin, a classmate who worked as a lighting technician at her concerts. The marriage lasted 8 years.

In 1997 Angelica began to communicate with L. Agutin, who already had a child from the ballerina M. Vorobyova. For three years, Angelica and Leonid lived in a civil marriage, they had a daughter, Elizabeth. She currently lives in Miami, studies, plays in a band, and writes songs. Elizaveta lives independently and sometimes comes to Moscow.

Angelica has an Instagram account. She runs the page on her own, posting compositions and photographs with her family.

Singer career

The 1990s should be considered the peak of Varum’s career. From 1991 to 1999, she released 8 albums, which sold at tremendous speed. Angelica performed at major concerts and prestigious venues, filmed videos, and toured the country.

Since 1997, her creative union with Leonid Agutin has developed, which then developed into a family relationship. But since 2000, the couple’s albums began to be released less frequently. There were 6 collections, and the intensity of the artists’ touring life gradually began to decline.

This was partly influenced by the change in genre. Both Leonid and Angelica love jazz and blues more than pop music. By starting to work in a different genre, they narrowed the circle of their fans, but at the same time improved the quality of the musical material. They recorded songs with American guitarist Al Di Meola, and organized joint concerts with Cuban flautist Orlando Valle “Maraca”.
