Gerard Butler's childhood

When Gerard was six months old, his family moved to Canada. My father wanted to open his own business. But all attempts were unsuccessful. Edward Butler blamed his wife for all his failures. In the end, she could not stand it and filed for divorce. Margaret Butler moved with her three children to her hometown of Paisley in Scotland. Soon little Gerard had a stepfather, but he did not see his father until he was 16 years old. At the age of 12, Gerard persuaded his mother to take him to audition for the theater. The auditions were successful and Gerard began playing in the Scottish Youth Theater. But his mother did not approve of her son’s hobby, believing that he should receive a decent education. But Butler's passion did not stop him from being the best child in his class. After graduating from school, in order not to upset his mother, he entered college at the University of Glasgow to study law. And there he successfully proved himself and was elected president of the student body. But the dream of a film career did not fade away.

Scotland. It was raining that day. Gerard Butler looked at the house in which he worked until one day, what seemed like an eternity ago, he decided to give up everything and move to London to become an actor.

He recalled how he had once entered the door of that building countless times, where the familiar world of office plankton awaited him. Now looking at Butler and what happened to him, it seems that he is one of those heroes whom he played in his films. He felt that this was what he needed, he dreamed about it. Gerard Butler was always smart enough or even too smart for the life he lived. He had no particular problem becoming president of the University Law Society of Glasgow, and after graduating from university he got a job in a very prestigious firm in his specialty. “ I drank constantly and hated my life ” - this is how the actor recalls his foggy and hopeless past.

One day he saw the theater play “Trainspotting” and realized what he was missing. Thank God he didn’t mean drugs, but acting. When the performance ended, he firmly decided to give up his lawyer past.

After a short period of time, he collected his things and went to London. He was going to become an actor. Having no experience, no connections, or any specific plans behind him, his action resembles a leap into the abyss. And Gerrard himself understood this very well.

The hackneyed expression “He who does not take risks, does not drink champagne” is always said when the result obtained fully pays for all the money and effort expended. But in the case of Butler, this phrase needs to be remade into this: “He who does not drink, does not take risks - and achieves his goal” - he decided to leave the habit of seeking solace in a bottle in his past life next to his lawyer’s briefcase.

After the films 300 Spartans, RocknRolla, Lara Croft, Waverunners - his acting career became the envy of many, but when he decided to start it, it became an excellent reason for jokes for everyone around him. Everyone laughed at him and believed that he had ruined his life.

Why did he decide to take such a risk, literally putting everything on the line? Can a seemingly impossible dream be worth undoing absolutely everything achieved so far? And what is the path to success?

“How does this happen?.. The world is just watching you closely,” Butler says. “And as soon as you make a steely decision, he begins to support and help you.”

In his case it worked. After a year of studying at acting school, he was able to get a role in the very play “Trainspotting” that changed his life.

After graduating from college, Gerard went to Los Angeles. After six months of trying, he only got the role of an extra in the film “Bodyguard.” At the same time, Butler learns that his father has cancer and goes to Canada. His own father died in front of Butler. Of course, the young man had no time for cinema. He returns to Scotland and works for Morton Frazer, one of the largest law firms. There he met Alan Stewart, who became his best friend and played a huge role in his life. Due to the death of his father and dissatisfaction with his job, Butler became depressed and became addicted to drinking. Friends more than once pulled him out from under the wheels of cars and pulled him off roofs. And two weeks before the end of his internship at Morton Frazer, he was fired. In Edinburgh, after seeing the play Trainspotting, Butler was finally convinced that he had chosen the wrong profession. This time he went to London to try his luck. In the big city, Butler worked as best he could, changing a bunch of different professions. One day, while working as a waiter, Butler plucked up the courage to approach actor and director Steven Berkoff, who came in for coffee. He approached him with a request for an audition. Surprised by such courage, Berkoff agreed, and so Butler received his first professional role. After some time, he played the main role in that very play “Trainspotting”. He landed another leading role in the successful film “The Bounty Hunter” in 2010, in which he starred alongside Jennifer Aniston. Together with his longtime friend Alan Stewart, Gerard opened a production house. The first project was the film “Law Abiding Citizen,” in which Butler himself starred. Now Gerard is also a screenwriter, producer and director.

Rumors about Butler's novels continue unabated. According to the press, he constantly meets with models and stars. The only romance that Gerard has officially confirmed is his relationship with his assistant Tonya, whose affair lasted about two years. Butler's film career began in 1997 with a role in the drama Mrs. Brown, which received numerous nominations and three BAFTA and Golden Globe awards. In addition, during filming, Gerard saved a drowning boy, for which he received a “Certificate of Bravery.” Then there were small roles in the Bond film, in the fantasy film by R. Mulcahy “The Mummy: Prince of Egypt”, etc. In 1999 he played in the comedy series “Lucy Sullivan Getting Married”. In 2000, there were supporting roles in the action film “Strelki” and the drama “Flowers of Harrison”. And already 2001 was marked by full-fledged leading roles in the horror films “Dracula 2000” and in the historical series “Attila”. Thanks to the latter, Gerard starred in battle scenes for the first time and got rid of his Scottish accent. These two films in 2001 brought Butler real popularity.

A notable role was in the thriller “Reign of Fire” in 2002, where Gerard starred with Matthew McConaughey and Christian Bale. 2003 brought the actor the leading male role in the popular Lara Croft. Butler then played the lead role in the successful and huge musical The Phantom of the Opera. It is noteworthy that the actor performed the entire vocal part of his character himself. The next significant and successful film was the epic action film “300” (2007). Gerard entered into the image of King Leonidas so completely and deeply that he received the “Best Fighter” award at the MTV Movie Awards.

Another milestone in the actor’s career was the comedy “Rock and Rolla” by Guy Ritchie in 2008. A successful role was in the detective comedy “The Bounty Hunter” (2010), where the female character was played by Jennifer Aniston. In 2014, Butler first voiced the cartoon How to Train Your Dragon 2.

Cinema attracts Gerard Butler not only from the acting side, but he is also interested in producing and creating scripts. So in 2009, he created the production company Evil Twins, which produced the successful drama-thriller Law Abiding Citizen. And the action movie “London Has Fallen” is planned for 2015.
