TV series "Charmed" and its characters - Paige Matthews and the Halliwell sisters

The American TV series “Charmed” tells the story of three of the most powerful and kind witch sisters in history who fight terrible demons and evil sorcerers. Agree, such a supernatural plot could not pass by TV viewers, 7.7 million of whom gathered at their TV screens in 1998, when the first episode of this mystical series premiered. Surely at one time you, too, were glued to the battle between good and evil, and you wouldn’t mind finding out what the main actors of “Charmed” look like and what they do today.

Rose McGowan

44 years old Role: half-sister Paige Matthews Seasons: 4−8

Over the past few months, the actress’s name has been associated with the loudest and largest sex scandal in Hollywood. At the beginning of October last year, The New Yorker published an investigation into how the famous producer Harvey Weinstein sexually harassed actresses for several decades. Some women were forced (or raped) by Harvey into sex. After the publication, McGowan became the first actress to admit that Weinstein raped her many years ago.

A backstory for those who are indignant about why the actress remained silent for so many years. Rose tried to make accusations back in 1997. At that time, no one in the industry even considered it possible to sue Weinstein. The producer, in turn, paid Rose $100 thousand as an “apology” - and representatives of both parties “hushed up” the matter.

Now the actresses, supported by society and inspired by each other's example, attacked Weinstein with unprecedented fury - and tore him off the pedestal.

McGowan joined the series Charmed in 2001, replacing Shannen Doherty. For Rose, working on the show was the exception to the rule. A rebel from a dysfunctional family, she often starred in alternative films. Having become famous, McGowan again turned to controversial projects. Rose played a one-legged stripper warrior in Robert Rodriguez's trash horror film Planet Terror and played an ugly witch in Conan the Barbarian.

Rose's hobby is music. In 2020, the actress released the video RM486, in which she again showed how far she is from pop culture.

In 2020, Rose divorced artist Davey Detail after three years of marriage.

Continuation of film career

In 2000, McMahon was offered a role in the popular family magic show Enchanted, directed by Aaron Spelling. Julian's hero is the charming half-human, half-demon Cole Turner. The series was very successful, and it was thanks to McMahon's participation in it that he gained real popularity. Due to the fact that the actor was a bachelor at that time, various rumors began to circulate about his personal life. Thus, due to the fact that Alice Milano and Julian McMahon played passionate lovers in the series “Charmed,” some viewers were convinced that they were in a close relationship even outside the set. However, the actors stubbornly denied this fact. But still, the Australian handsome man was in a relationship for some time with a colleague from “Charmed.” So, Shannon Doherty and Julian McMahon were not together for long. Their relationship ultimately did not lead to any serious consequences, and the actors separated peacefully, remaining good friends.

In parallel with his work in “Charmed,” McMahon starred in such films as “Another Day” and “Insomnia.” After finishing work on the series, Julian took part in the filming of a joint Canadian-American-French film called “The Haunting Dream.” In it, the actor brilliantly played the role of the temperamental George. According to film critics, films starring Julian McMahon have always stood out from the crowd thanks to his charm, charisma and incredible talent.

Alyssa Milano

45 years old Role: sister Phoebe Halliwell Seasons: 1−8

Alyssa supported her colleague and friend McGowan in the fight against violence. Milano called on women who have experienced harassment and coercion to participate in the #MeToo movement. As a result, the participants of this flash mob became “People of the Year” according to Time magazine.

In 2013, Milano appeared in the TV series Mistresses, but left it after two seasons due to pregnancy. In 2014, Alyssa gave birth to her second child, daughter Elizabella, with sports agent David Bugliari. The couple also have an eldest son, Milo.

After “Charmed,” Alyssa had few notable roles, and her main income came from advertising: Veet razors, Sheer Cover cosmetics, and Viva paper towels. The actress also created a clothing collection for the Touch brand.

Shannen Doherty

46 years old Role: older sister Prue Halliwell Seasons: 1−3

Shannen was one of the first to get into the project thanks to producer Aaron Spelling, with whom she worked in Beverly Hills, 90210. She also asked to cast her best friend Holly Marie Combs in Charmed.

Shannen lasted until the fourth season, until her character was killed by a demon. And if the fans were surprised by this turn, then for the film crew everything was obvious. Drunk brawls (from the days of “Beverly Hills”) and quarrels with on-screen sister Alyssa Milano cost Doherty his job.

In 2020, Shannen was diagnosed with breast cancer. The actress went through several courses of chemotherapy and underwent a mastectomy. Now the disease has entered the stage of remission, but in the fall Shannen admitted that she was preparing for a new operation.

Throughout her illness, Doherty is supported by her third husband, photographer Kurt Iswarinko. The couple has been married since 2011.

Shannen Marie Doherty was born in Memphis, Tennessee on April 12, 1971. Her parents fell in love at first sight, and now they have been together for 34 years. As a child, Shannen was a very private person. “I liked playing alone more than with other children,” she says. “I assumed I was born for this. But sometimes I was sociable. When I lived in Tennessee, I went to church often. But I never really needed it. I always wanted to be alone."

When she was seven years old, her family moved to Los Angeles, where her father opened a branch of the family transportation business on the East Bank, and Shannen became interested in acting. She told her parents that she wanted to become an actress, but her parents did not want it. Shannen insisted. “Parents resisted for two years. I said - you let me play football. Why don’t you want me to be an actress?” Her first role was in "Snow White", in which she played Sneezy the dwarf. The beginning of Shannen's career happened, as always, unexpectedly and completely by accident - the producer of the series "Father Murphy" scoured the schools of Memphis in search of a daring girl for a small role, and finally found... to his advantage and not only that. During the filming of several episodes of the series, Shannen annoyed the crew so much that in her absence it was decided that there was a catastrophic lack of thrills in life!

“I saw Little House on the Prairie and I desperately wanted to work with Michael Landan,” Shannen says. This is what many little girls wanted, but either Shannen was amazingly persistent, or lucky, or maybe both. However, eventually, at the age of 12, Michael Landon saw her in Father Murphy and cast her as Jenny Walder in the final season of Little House: A New Beginning. This was already a full-fledged role. The series was broadcast 3 times a week and was a huge success with viewers.

At the age of 15, Shannen was invited to the permanent role of Chris Witherspoon in Our House. She played the oldest of the Witherspoon children. This role was very close to her, she said that “like me, Chris has certain goals and strong ambitions.” Since then, Shannen began traveling from series to series and diluting the gray life of her colleagues with good portions of scandals.

This hazel-eyed, dark-haired teenager was so made-for-TV that he appeared with Michael Lendan in an episode of Highway to Heaven. Projects followed: “The Tonight Show”, “He and She”, “Airwolf”, “Outlaw” and “Magnum, Private Detective”. A little earlier, she appeared in such projects as: “Super Children”, “Travelers”, “Children’s World”, “Morning of Los Angeles”. She also starred in the film Another Lover and the miniseries The Times of Robert Kennedy. In parallel with the series Our House, Shannen starred in Girls Just Want to Have Fun in 1986 (along with young Sarah Jessica Parker and Helen Hunt). This was followed by “The Secret of Nimh”, “Taken” and “You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown” - where she played the role of Lucy. Shannen has said that "my goal is to be a successful actress, and I intend to work very hard to achieve that."

In 1989, as an adult, she starred in Heathers (a classic film starring the likes of Christian Slater and Winona Ryder), which was a huge achievement in terms of acting, despite her fame, wealth and beauty. But it was in 1990 that life took a major turn when the series Beverly Hills 90210 hit television screens. The popular teen drama invaded the souls of pimply, angst-ridden teenagers every week, and teenage girls everywhere connected with Brenda Walsh and the character of Shannen. The actress finally calmed down and began to somewhat resemble her “glossy” heroine. Moreover, this was required by the responsibility that fell on Shannen’s fragile shoulders since she became Brenda Walsh. After all, letters from enthusiastic fans of the new teenage idol came in tons, they were sorted by dozens of special studio employees. Brenda had to be a friend, adviser and mentor to millions of girls who went through puberty and were left completely confused.

The new “role” turned out to be a difficult test for the not yet fully formed maximalist girl. And the press did not let her take a step, attributing the most fantastic adventures to Brenda-Shannen (some of them turned out to be true). Although, in general, everything turned out not so bad, Shannen’s violent temper came back to haunt her quite unexpectedly.

February 1996. Another issue of Hollywood gossip girl Variety. Interview with Shannen Doherty and, accordingly, the scandal of the year in the American television community. From this extremely frank exercise, the world was surprised to learn dirty details about how “Beverly Hills” was filmed, by whom and by what criteria the actors were selected. Without particularly worrying about the ethical side of the issue, Shannen told America who Jason Prisley showed his ass to during filming, why she considers Luke Perry a closet homosexual, and Gabrielle Carteris an immature slut. And it wouldn’t be so scary, but by calling Beverly Hills general producer Aaron Spelling a pedophile, Shannen Doherty sentenced herself. The letter addressed to the project management, signed by all of Shannen’s partners in the series and succinctly reporting their reluctance to work with her, was late: by this time the brawler was already unemployed. Although the role of Brenda made the petite brunette a star, she says the last two years have been a disaster for her. “It was incredibly difficult times and a lot of hard work. In the second season, the series took an unexpected turn that I did not expect. The scenarios were completely different. This started to make me angry. I was not satisfied with my job. They didn't let me leave at the end of the second season when I asked." About the fourth season, she says: “I started having personal problems with my marriage and I needed time to solve these problems. I was no longer passionate about what I was doing, I needed to leave to get on with my life. Thanks to A. Spelling, who understood me and we made a joint decision about my leaving the series.”

Luke Perry, who played Dylan McKay for six seasons, also thinks his last two seasons on the show felt like a sham. “The script was very bad. But I didn't argue as an actor, and that really upset me. I asked for an update to the script, but no one listened to me,” says Perry.

Doherty says she realized the true meaning of her act later, when she left the series, which was still on air. She did this because she was still a child. “I left 90210 thinking my marriage would end and tried to save it. For two months I tried to find a project for both of us, but nothing worked out.” Since then, she has not acted anywhere for long periods of time. Her latest film, Sleeping With The Devil, is based on a true story about a woman battling her illness after a tragic accident. And now the actress appears again on American television screens. Everyone understands why, after the Beverly Hills scandal, she was blacklisted by producers. Such things are not forgotten the next day. She had to start almost everything over again and fight for a place in the Hollywood sun. But the audience did not forget the actress, and Aaron Spelling thought and forgave Shannon for her trick. He invited the actress several times to continue working in the series, but then the scythe hit a rock: Shannen did not agree to return to the bosom of Beverly Hills. She firmly decided to get rid of the image of Brenda, with whom she had almost “fused” during her work on the series, which is very dangerous for any actor. Shannen Doherty received her last offer to honor Beverly Hills with her presence in early 1998 and refused. Then Spelling, not wanting to miss out on the talented actress, submitted 2 new projects for her consideration. One of them immediately caught Shannen's attention. This is a new series, released on American screens in September 1998. Spelling did not miscalculate here either. The series "Charmed" has a lot of fans. Alyssa Milano and Holly Marie Combs starred in it alongside Shannen Doherty. The actresses complemented each other perfectly and made up a charming trio. After a fairly long break, Shannen Doherty returned to the screens again. Moreover, with another triumph. Apparently, she was born under a lucky star after all.

As for the actress’s personal life, those left behind are: Dean Fector (1990, owner of a photo studio, separated in 1991); Chris Foufas (1991, real estate developer, separated 1992); Ashley Hamilton (son of actor George Hamilton) - married on September 14, 1993, after 2 weeks of dating, separated after 5 months, divorce date - April 1994. He then married Angie Everhart. Jude Nelson (1994, actor, met on the set of the film “Blindfold”). Shannen was rumored to have had a brief fling with Dean Cain when he appeared on Beverly Hills 90210; Rob Weiss (1994, actor, director, true Hollywood split, then got engaged and split again in April 1996). There was also talk about an affair with Jason Priestley, and a little later with Luke Perry. Julian McMahon was also left behind. Their joint film work is the drama “Another Day” (2001)

Shannen's parents are Tom and Rose. Tom is a banker, and Rose is the owner of a beauty salon. Shannen also has a brother, Sean (born in 1967). She trusts him completely.

When not busy with work, Shannen travels, loves horses, reads and paints, and has 3 dogs. Doherty is one of those people who, before returning home, gets ready to go on the road again. The longest she's stayed in one place is here in the Hollywood Hills. “I don’t have a permanent home. I rent them. I throw away a lot of money on this because I look like a gypsy. I’ve already lived in this house for two years—more than anywhere else before.” She loves to renovate the houses where she stays. “It turns the house into a warm, cozy place where I feel very comfortable.”

At 5'4′, and less than 100 pounds, she is in top shape, although she doesn't really care about it. As for her natural beauty, Shannen ranks well here - after wearing heavy makeup on set every day, she usually goes out in public "au naturel." When she's at home, she likes to wear jeans and T-shirts, but when she goes out, she likes to look feminine, and she has excellent taste for that. Shannen loves things from Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, Chanel, Giorgio Armani and Moschino. Shannen loves sports, especially tennis, skiing and volleyball, as well as traveling and shopping. She's a Billy Idol fan. The madness of youth, scandals and problems are behind us. Peace reigned in her soul, she has friends, wonderful parents whom she simply adores. Professional luck and instinct did not let her down again. She is happy!

Holly Marie Combs

44 years old Role: Sister Piper Halliwell Seasons: 1−8

“Charmed” not only brought Holly Mary fame, but also improved her personal life. In 2004, the actress married the series' lighting designer, David Donohoe. Due to the actress’s pregnancy, the writers had to work on the plot and force her character Piper to also carry a baby.

Combs gave birth to three sons from Donoho, but, alas, this did not save the couple from breaking up in 2011. Now Holly is expecting her fourth child - the actress is pregnant with her boyfriend Mike.

Movies

Thanks to Levi's commercials, McMahon often appeared on television. This allowed him to quickly gain popularity in his homeland.

The handsome young man was noticed and in 1981 he was offered the main role in the soap opera Dynasty. From the star’s biography it is known that he worked on this project for 18 months, and then moved on to the series, which became the debut for the young man - “Home and Away” (1988). By the way, this film became the starting point for the careers of many famous actors of our time: Liam Hemsworth, Dominic Purcell, Jason Clarke.

Actor Julian McMahon

Inspired by the hype around himself, Julian left in 1991 to conquer Hollywood. There, the young man eradicates the Australian accent and begins to appear in episodic roles on TV. The actor himself does not like to remember this time, because minor roles are not something to be proud of.

Then there was a lull in McMahon's film career, but already in 1992 a real storm grew: the promising actor was cast in the role of Ian Raine in the drama series Another World. In 1997 he starred in the film “Magenta”, but the film did not find a response in the hearts of the audience. In 2000, Aaron Spelling invited him to the television series “Charmed”

.

McMahon significantly increased his army of fans by starring in the fantasy series “Charmed.” It is noteworthy that the producers selected famous stars for filming, refusing unknown and novice actors. If Julian had not been popular enough at that time, he would not have been invited to the series.

Julian McMahon in the series "Nip/Tuck"

On October 7, 1998, the first episode of the Charmed project was released. The plot of the film is simple and non-trivial: three beautiful sisters discover a predisposition to magic: one of them can “freeze” time, the second moves objects with the power of thought, and the third sees the future. The sisters vow to each other to use their abilities for good and wage an unequal battle against the forces of evil.

Julian appears in the third season as Cole Turner, a seductive assistant district attorney, immediately falling in love with the entire female audience of the television series. The producers did not reinvent the wheel and used the classic technique when the antagonist turns into the protagonist. Throughout the entire season, Cole rushes between the dark and light sides of his existence, but in the name of love he chooses the light. Turner renounces his demonic nature and becomes a mere mortal.

Julian McMahon in the TV series Charmed

Officially, the actor only had a contract for one season, but due to the fact that with the appearance of the hot brunette the ratings skyrocketed, it was decided to continue cooperation. The charming demon was signed for two more full seasons (fourth and fifth). However, McMahon left the series midway through the fifth season. The reason for the early departure was not disclosed.

It is believed that Julian became internationally popular after “Charmed,” but it is reliably known that in the United States the series “Nip/Tuck” (2003) secured the seductive brunette’s status as a TV star, bringing him a Golden Globe nomination in 2005 in the “Best Actor” category drama series."

In 2005, McMahon participated in a large-scale Hollywood film project for the first time. In the film adaptation of the Fantastic Four comics, the actor played the role of the villain Doctor Doom. The film collected an impressive box office, and Julian established himself well and, to the delight of fans, in 2007 he appeared in the sequel Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.

In the same year, the conqueror of women's hearts starred with Sandra Bullock in the thriller "Premonition". According to Julian, this is his most successful role. In 2010, Julian changed his role in the action comedy film R.E.D. In 2011, films with his participation were also released: “Faces in the Crowd” and “Tsunami 3D”.

And in 2020, the favorite of the weaker half of humanity was involved in two TV series simultaneously: “Hunters” and “Dirk Gently’s Detective Agency.”

Now the filmography of the Australian actor includes more than 30 diverse roles. Fans and admirers hope that this number will continue to grow steadily every year.

Kaley Cuoco

32 years old Role: teen witch Billie Jenkins Season: 8

Today, Kaylie is mostly known for her role as the beautiful Penny in the series “The Big Bang Theory,” but a year before her, the actress managed to star in the last season of “Charmed” as a young student of three witches.

In 2013, the actress married tennis player Ryan Sweeting, whom she divorced two years later. Now the actress is going to marry for the second time - to a jockey and billionaire heir, 26-year-old Karl Cook.

Drew Fuller

37 years old Role: Chris Wyatt - son of Piper and Leo Seasons: 5−7

Drew began his career as a fashion model, but in the early 2000s he retrained as an actor. "Charmed" made him famous and turned him into a sex symbol for teenage girls. Now the actor stars in episodes of films and TV series and only remembers his past glory.

Drew is dating Australian actress Claire van der Boom.

Brian Krause

48 years old Role: Guardian Leo Wyatt Seasons: 1−8

Brian's most famous works are in the erotic film Return to the Blue Lagoon and in the TV series Charmed. After the show closed, Krause starred in many films, which for financial reasons were never released.

The actor’s personal life is also completely calm. After a four-year marriage to Beth Bruce and a shorter romance with Alyssa Milano, Brian is enjoying single life.

The plot of the series

After the death of their grandmother, three sisters, Prue, Piper and Phoebe, get together again in the old mansion where they once grew up. The girls' relationship cannot be called friendly, but they still try to get along with each other. While examining the house, the sisters cannot get into the only room - the attic (the door is tightly boarded up, and only a carpenter can open it).

However, the next night these impregnable doors open by themselves and, once inside, the youngest Phoebe discovers the mysterious Book of Sacraments there. Having read the strange quatrain, Phoebe does not even suspect that she has just cast a spell that returned the sisters their magical Power of Three. Now they are no longer just sisters, but Charmed Ones - witches with magical powers, with the help of which they must protect innocent people from demons and sorcerers.

In the series “Charmed,” the actors and roles are fully approved by the producers of the series. Before starting work, the applicants went through a rigorous casting process.

Julian McMahon

49 years old Role: demon Cole Turner Seasons: 3−5

Julian was considered as a minor character in the third season, but stayed in the project for another two years. McMahon himself decided to leave for new projects. The actor turned the head of Shannen Doherty herself, and fans still cannot forgive the writers for the separation of his character Cole from the witch Phoebe and death.

Julian McMahon was married to singer Dannii Minogue, to model Brooke Burns, and in 2014 he married model Kelly Pañagua.

At the pinnacle of glory

The status of a television star was finally assigned to Julian McMahon after the start of filming in the series “Nip/Tuck” (2003-2010). For his role as a plastic surgeon named Christian Troy, the actor was nominated in 2005 for the prestigious Golden Globe award in the category “Best Actor in a Drama Series.” However, the winner was Ian McShane for his work in the series Deadwood.

In the same year, Julian took part in the filming of a truly large-scale Hollywood film project for the first time. It was a comic book adaptation called Fantastic Four. The actor got the role of the villain Doctor von Doom. Two years later, a sequel to the film was released, which was called “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.” Julian McMahon again appeared on the big screen in his usual villainous role.

Also in 2007, the actor, together with Sandra Bullock, took part in the filming of the thriller “Premonition”. Three years later, McMahon's fans had the opportunity to see their idol in the new action comedy film "R.E.D."

Later, the actor took part in the filming of such films as “Faces in the Crowd” (2011) – the role of detective Sam Kerrest, “Wedge with Wedge” (2012), “Tsunami 3D” (2012) and “Paranoia” (2013).

Jason Lewis

46 years old Role: Dex Season: 8

Former fashion model Jason Lewis is best known as Samantha's young lover from Sex and the City. In the eighth season of Charmed, the actor played one of the suitors of the witch Phoebe (she even married him in one of the episodes).

Jason Lewis dated actresses Rosario Dawson and Jennifer Aniston, and his last love was producer Satsuki Mitchell (Daniel Craig's ex-girlfriend).
